The long awaited news that school camps are able to resume in Term Two after being cancelled earlier this year is welcomed with open arms by many. Graeme Watson owner of Forest Edge Recreation Camp told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that although the announcement was exciting, he believes it came too late. "The timing of the announcement wasn't really thought out. Making the announcement in the second week of the school holidays doesn't allow schools time to plan a camp." The State Government has announced school camps will be able to resume from Term Two, with students required to complete RATs. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Michael Myers is back... and so is Movie Squad... just in time for Halloween. This week, hosts Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo torment horror-hating Breakfast host Graeme Watson with reviews of Halloween Kills and Prisoners of the Ghostland. Halloween Kills is first up, with Tristan looking at David Gordon Green's sequel to his 2018 reboot, which was a sequel to the 1978 original, which ret-conned the other 10 instalments of the series (it's complicated). With Halloween Ends due for release next year, how does this middle entry in Green's trilogy hold up? Find out! Then, Simon reviews the third Nicolas Cage film of 2021: Prisoners of the Ghostland, from notorious Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono. In this flick, Cage plays Hero, a bank robber tasked with rescuing a Governor's daughter, and fitted with an electrified suit that'll explode if he hurts the young lady in the process... or if he gets aroused by her. Halloween Kills is in cinemas while Prisoners of the Ghostland is available to stream/download and on DVD/Blu-ray from November.
Although Nick and Jim are on hiatus, this week's Moorditj Mag featured a music-forward program. Panelled by Graeme Watson, we had an hour of tunes selected by Toby Miller. The World Turned Upside Down is a 4-part audio documentary sharing stories of how the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic has impacted upon the lives and livelihoods of people working in the creative industries in Northern Ireland. In Part 4, we find out how creative entrepreneurs have attempted to maintain mental health and wellbeing during this very unusual time. With the world having been turned upside down, many people have struggled to make sense of the new normal. With so much uncertainty and when what’s at risk is as serious as people potentially dying, it’s no wonder that it has been so difficult to stay mentally well at this time, no matter how hard we try. For people living alone, this time has potentially been one of the most lonely experiences of their entire lives. For the introverts, this has been a chance to share their tips on how to enjoy solitude. The haves and have nots have been those with gardens and those without, those who can work from home and those who work front line, those who have good health and those who have underlying health conditions. In some ways, this time has highlighted the stark differences between people’s lifestyles. But 2020 has also offered a pause for thought. It has forced us to re-evaluate how we live and work. Whether we really need to go to all of those in-person work meetings, or even have as many. Whether we need to buy fast fashion or whether we can do with consuming less. Whether we should finally do that thing we have been putting off, whether that is learning to cook or proposing to a partner. But has 2020 fundamentally changed us as a society? Has it permanently altered the way in which we work in the creative industries? Or is it a glitch in time before we simply move on and Covid-19 eventually becomes just a distant memory? In our season finale you’ll hear from creative entrepreneurs Tessa Ann of the Sound Healing Spa, Matt & Abby Bonner from Forever Social and comedian Paddy Raff. Thanks also to Alex McMillian, Katie Ireland, Chris Thompson, Dara Flanagan, and Meadhbh McIlgorm for their call-in contributions, reflecting on their experiences during 2020. Presented by Karishma Kusurkar and Graeme Watson. Produced in association with Blick Shared Studios, with support from Future Screens NI, Northern Ireland Screen, and Ulster University. The Passion and the Resurrection in the Song of Songs with Revd Graeme Watson by WCCM
In his first speech since retiring, and in light of the Fair Work Commission's ruling to reform Sunday penalty rates in the retail and hospitality sectors, Graeme Watson spoke on his more than 10 years' experience as Vice President of the Commission. Recently described as ‘one of the most brilliant industrial lawyers of his time', his letter of resignation to Employment Minister Michaelia Cash outlined that in his view the operation of the Workplace Relations system was undermining the objects of the Fair Work Act of promoting national economic prosperity and social inclusion. His letter led Peter Costello to liken him to Samson in the Bible — ‘shaking the pillars of the system to bring it down on the heads of the Philistines'. Overt capture of independent courts and tribunals is a feature of undemocratic societies, dictatorships and autocracies. It undermines a key element of democracy, the rule of law. Alarmingly, there is clear evidence of this undermining of some of our pillars of western democracy. But capture is even more damaging when it is covert, hiding behind an air of legitimacy and independence. Society needs to be ever vigilant to this threat. Interference and capture needs to be exposed and eliminated — not avoided for fear of committing the same vice of interference. Scrutiny and holding our institutions to account based on the fundamental principles of democracy are obligations we all share. ____________________ The Centre for Independent Studies (CIS) promotes free choice and individual liberty, and defends cultural freedom and the open exchange of ideas. Transgender rights advocate Kai Schweizer joins Graeme Watson and Leigh Hill to discuss recent LGBTIQ news and issues.
Today you're going to be hearing from one of Northern Ireland's most hotly-tipped stand-up comedians, Micky Bartlett. Listeners will certainly have heard his name before on the Graeme Watson episode and you all know by know that I have a major thing for the current Northern Irish comedy scene so I had to get Micky on as a guest. We had a great laugh together, really did. Micky has to be one of the most relaxed comedians we're ever had on and it felt far more like a conversation over a pint than an interview. Nonetheless we nattered about how and why he got into comedy, ducking out of comedy for two full years after dying on his arse one night and making videos with, and being the victim of, the very talented Colin Geddis. We spoke too about Micky's influences, growing up in Northern Ireland; while some of his friends wanted woolly faces all he wanted to do was play Streets of Rage. We spoke too about STIs and trying to make doctors laugh, his successful stint on the BBC Northern Ireland panel show Monumental and dealing easily with being labelled as Northern Ireland's next big stand-up comedian. It was an absolute pleasure to talk to Micky, he's a real what you see is what you get and although this is for a podcast you get what I mean. His stand-up show is nothing short of utterly hilarious and I sincerely thing he's only a couple of more tours away from greatness.
