It is a privilege to welcome stand-up comedian Ahir Shah to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. On August 12, 2024, Ahir announced that he would be making his Netflix debut. He would bring his 2023 Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning show ENDS to the streaming service. The special will feature material focused on family, history, immigration, marriage, politics, sacrifice, and beans. The stand-up comedian recorded the special earlier this year at London's prestigious Royal Court Theatre. ENDS was the runaway hit of the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with the show starting life at the beginning of the month as a work in progress. Three and a half weeks later, ENDS was crowned the Best Show of the festival before a sold-out five-week run at London's Soho Theatre. The show amassed five-star reviews from United Kingdom publications such as Evening Standard, The Mail on Sunday, The Times, and Tortoise Media. Ahir Shah later took the show to the United States as a part of the Netflix is a Joke Festival in Los Angeles. He plans to tour the show across the UK starting on January 30, 2025. In addition to the stage, Ahir Shah appeared on numerous appearances on radio and television. He appeared on BBC 2's Frankie Boyle's New World Order, Live at the Apollo, The Mash Report, Mock the Week, and QI. He also guest starred on BBC Radio 4's The Now Show and Channel 4's The Last Leg. In 2021, Ahir launched his first special, Dots, on HBO Max. He performed sold-out shows worldwide, including tours in India and the United Kingdom. He had runs at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Adelaide Fringe, and Montreal's Just for Laughs Festivals. In this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Ahir Shah discussed the comedic heroes who inspired him to enter the stand-up world and previewed his upcoming Netflix special, Ends.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.
Smashing comedian and lead writer of The Mash Report, Tom Neenan brings his giant comedy brain to bear on Red Dwarf. Unsurprisingly for such a seasoned comedy writer, he is super insightful on the special ingredients that make Red Dwarf so great - from its vivid nature, to Grant and Naylor's knack for smuggling in psychology. Plus: the lessons kids can learn from the characters. And what's the best episode to show a friend who's never seen Red Dwarf before? We are right into Tom's favourite era of the show. Series 4 episode 3, Justice, is a classic among classics - and we discover why. Among many, many other things, we assess how the narrative structure brings three disparate story elements together. How Ed Bye does a masterful job of directing. How Robert Llewelyn nails Grant and Naylor's brilliant defence speech. And when we take Tom into Overthinking Corner, he really rises to the futile challenge. So, listen now and find out which bits make Tom's inner comedy writer applaud! Follow @tpneenan on Instagram - where you can see his brilliant paintings. If you love Doctor Who, you should check out Tom Neenan's gleefully silly pod, A Wheezing Groaning Sound. Hosted on Acast. Marc chats with comedian Rachel Parris ahead of her tour shows in Scotland at the beginning of May. Star of The Mash Report (and the videos from it which went viral online), Rachel discusses becoming known for something that's not completely reflective of her stand-up, what it was like when she took over as host during the ill-fated weeks where Liz Truss became Prime Minister and the Queen died, and explains why she's not a fan of the phrase "Be Kind". Plus, Rachel reflects on her experience of appearing on panel shows (not to mention judging a competition won by a certain Mr Buchanan), how she deals with the "teacher vibe" perception people have of her, and how she finds being in a relationship with fellow comic Marcus Brigstocke makes navigating the life of a performer more manageable. There's also an extended interview with comedian, presenter, actress and improviser Rachel Parris, who talks about why she's still doing Woke comedy, even though she's not on the BBC any more; why, legally, she had nothing to do with Nish Kumar's departure from the Mash Report; and why she likes to make fun of a female author. A chat which I absolutely ADORE and am deeply pained by at the same time. No, that's not because I'm ill and sound like I'm struggling to stay alive - but because I'm worried that many DO still expect us to be grateful for a seat at the table. Grateful to have our voices heard - but not listened to. Grateful to work for free or the bare minimum, grateful to be exploited. But truly, this chat does mean the world to me. Nish Kumar speaks on a level about protest, appropriation, the relationship between Asian stand-up and stand-up by Black comedians - and something I was forgiven for asking about: what the deal was with The Mash Report getting cancelled. Today, we are in a space where we can reflect on what was and wasn't progress - but are people doing this? Are we learning lessons and fixing things - or is society pretending to care, while glossing over the fact that many still face ongoing exploitation? I hope the future nods to some points raised in this bittersweet conversation between Nish and I. The landlady cat Zambia says the chat is pretty dope, so you know it's gonna be high quality in your ears. I'd love to hear from you. Please do share this episode with your friends and say hi to me: I'm @lilliealmond on Twitter and @almondsweetness on Insta.
Your host Toby Hadoke has been in a Russell T Davies mood recently so rushed this one forward in the schedules. And he hasn't regretted it. Special guest Tom Neenan is a hugely accomplished writer (The Mash Report) and performer (Radio 4's The Haunting) and so it is an utter delight to have him abroad the carriage to accompany us on the journey through Midnight. Sometimes it can be tricky remaining positive throughout a whole episode of Doctor Who. This isn't one of those times. And we have a bonus contribution from Toby's friend Chris Dunford-Kelk too and so this becomes something of a feature length affair, but if it is half as enjoyable to listen to as it was to make then that shouldn't be a problem.
Nikki Bedi and Richard Coles are joined by comedian Geoff Norcott who has appeared on Live at the Apollo, Mash Report, Mock the Week and Question Time, had sell-out Edinburgh runs and two national tours. He is also a rare breed in comedy – a “right wing comedian”. We also have singer and actor Marisha Wallace who is a Broadway and West End sensation. Born and raised in a small town in North Carolina, Marisha has done it all, from tap dancing at the Tonys to nannying for Philip Seymour Hoffman to performing at the Queen at the Royal Variety Show. Hilary Wynter was a child when, in 1972, she was involved in a terrible accident at the Big dipper in Battersea park where five children died, she tells us of her memories. Shay Doyle worked as an undercover police officer, tackling some of the criminals he grew up with in Manchester, he joins us. Columnist and broadcaster Grace Dent chooses her Inheritance Tracks: Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood's Jackson, and Human League, Being Boiled. Producer: Corinna Jones

Steph chats with Comedian, Actor, Presenter AND Author (phew) Ellie Taylor about her career. She's come a long way since playing Nancy in Oliver aged 17 and they discuss the terror/joy of Stand Up Comedy and some of Ellie's recent projects including what it's like to be in the multi-award winning show Ted Lasso (Emmys! SAG Awards! Golden Globes!) as the brilliant Sassy. Ellie says new mums are her catnip and in her book ‘My Child and Other Mistakes' describes how pregnancy and motherhood really felt, with a perfect blend of gentle empathy and honesty, gross-out reality and hilarious anecdotes (she is a comedian after all). She reassures ‘It's okay to like your child but fucking hate the parenting bit sometimes and to find the newborn days awful…you can hold these two thoughts in your head' before reassuring new mums that it gets easier. Steph and Ellie finish by discussing therapy and learning to be gentler with yourself, in a very grown up manner. What is it like to be diagnosed with a Neurodivergent condition later on in life? And how do you process a new label which arguably has a list of potential connotations with it? We're back! A few small changes have been going on at Conscious Being Magazine, behind the scenes - and plus, we were also locked out of our podcast editing software. (Eek!) For today's episode, we have 2 guests on to discuss what it was like to be diagnosed later in life - and a range of themes are also discussed, such as grieving on finding out (not in a tragedy was - more that you're processing), why the superpower narrative can be doing more harm than good, and more. This is a love letter to being neurodivergent by 2 women - our guests are: Sara Gibbs - Sara Gibbs is a writer, and has recently published her debut book, a memoir, called Drama Queen. She largely works in the comedy sector, and her credits include writing for Dead Ringers, The News Quiz, The Now Show, The Mash Report, and many others. Sara is also a diagnosed Autistic individual. Hester Grainger - Hester Grainger is a freelance writer and PR expert. (She has also previously written for Conscious Being Magazine!) Alongside her husband Kelly, Hester co-founded and also runs Perfectly Autistic, a neurodiversity consultancy business. She was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 43. We will be back next week with a roundtable discussion of what it means to be a content creator while also being disabled; 4 guests discuss their respective experiences, such as by using TikTok, building their own platform, and more. *** PLEASE NOTE: The Disabled Debrief With Conscious Being Magazine is a safe and free space for guests. This means that guests are unhindered in what kind of language they use - such as if they prefer to call themselves disabled, use person first language, etc. This does not necessarily always reflect the viewpoint of Conscious Being Magazine or the host of this podcast. This podcast episode also contains reference to some subjects that guests may find distressing or upsetting at times - such as when it comes to the subject of 'curing' Autism, a sense of grief on being diagnosed later in life, etc. Please exercise caution when listening. *** Series 1 of The Disabled Debrief is sponsored by Diverse Educators. Co-founded by Bennie Kara and Hannah Wilson, #DiverseEd began as a grassroots movement that has the mission to celebrate the diversity, as well as to amplify the voices of those in education. On the show this week it's the comedian, actress and author Ellie Taylor. Ellie talks all about her Sunday Times bestseller book 'My Child and Other Mistakes' and she shares some brilliantly funny stories about her toddler. Gaby and Ellie discuss The Mash Report and how a clip of her from that show has been watched by millions and was then reposted by Madonna and Jennifer Aniston! She talks about her love of Victoria Wood and how she was a trailblazer for women. Of course they chat about the multi-award winning Apple TV show 'Ted Lasso' and their mutual admiration for the goddess Hannah Waddingham. They also chat about Ellie's Netflix show 'Cravings' and about working together on Gaby's Talking Pictures on Radio 4. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Sara Gibbs has built a successful career, but also – like so many of us – experienced the challenges of being in the world as an autistic person. After enduring vicious bullying and social exclusion during her school days, and having some pretty horrendous experiences in the workplace, she decided to become a writer. After taking a comedy writing course she has since written for Dead Ringers, The News Quiz, The Daily Mash, The Now Show, The Mash Report and Have I Got News for You. She is also the co-founder of satirical women's magazine Succubus, the founder of The First Laugh Comedy Writing Competition for new writers and the presenter of The Aut-Hour Podcast. Diagnosed autistic at 30, she published her brilliant – and hugely relatable – memoir of life as an undiagnosed autistic woman, Drama Queen, in 2021. I devoured this book as soon as I got my hands on it, and I was so excited to talk to her for Squarepeg. We talked about all sorts of things, including ➡ Her childhood, bullying and her experience at a Steiner school ➡ Her difficult relationship with her dad, who she suspects may have been autistic too ➡ Dealing with a toxic workplace environment ➡ Finding her place in the world as a writer ➡ and The challenge autistic people in particular can face when trying to change careers Squarepeg is a podcast in which neurodivergent women, and trans and nonbinary people, explore navigating a neurotypical world and share their insights, challenges and successes. I hope that these conversations will be inspiring and thought provoking, open you up to new ways of thinking about being neurodivergent, and help you feel more connected to a worldwide community of people with similar experiences. I'm Amy Richards, and after being diagnosed autistic at the age of 37 I'm now on a mission to learn more about different perspectives and issues around being a neurodivergent adult in a world that feels like it doesn't quite fit. Comedian Nish Kumar says: “Bob Dylan is the most enduring and important creative relationship of my life. If you can't think of one Dylan song you like, then a part of your humanity may be missing”. When Bob and his band played the Hendrix arrangement of All Along The Watchtower at his first (and only) Dylan concert, it was “one of the greatest moments of my life”. In other words, he's our sort of chap.Cheerfully agreeing that “there's no bore like a Dylan bore”, Nish gives us his takes on Tangled Up In Blue (“I don't think he's ever finished it”), The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll, Bob Dylan's 115th Dream and I Shall Be Released. We get the inside story on using Bob as a role model when being booed (“bloody-minded obstinance in the face of people being dicks is very inspiring”) and for personal grooming inspiration (“my hair grows the way it grows because of the Blonde On Blonde album cover”).Nish Kumar grew up in Croydon, South London. The comedian Nish Kumar on why his latest stand up tour is his most political yet, and the challenge of keeping his satirical topical news television show, The Mash Report, fresh in these febrile times. The look of a building has always been an essential element in architectural design, but less conspicuous are its acoustic properties. Specialists in acoustic design are frequently engaged to enhance the aural experience of people in a room or a building. Their work ranges from blocking out unwanted noise, such as from passing trains, to providing the optimal sound for the audience and musicians in a concert hall. Stig Abell visits a virtual sound laboratory, and hears from Trevor Cox, professor of acoustic engineering, about the history and importance of sound in building design. The winner of the 2018 Costa Children's Book Award is Hilary McKay. She talks to Stig about her novel, The Skylarks' War. This is set during the First World War and follows three children growing up at a time when girls had to fight for an education and boys, as soon as they were able, went off to fight.Presenter: Stig Abell Producer: Julian May
