"His personal details were never known to him, and he could only assume his origins based on a nameplate he had as a child."On 24 June 1955, a Czechoslovakian State Security Patrol detained an unknown man near the Slovak-Polish border. Carrying no identification, the man communicated almost entirely through hand gestures. During interrogation, authorities would discover that he was deaf and mute, although both claims were met with a fair amount of skepticism. A comprehensive, nationwide investigation failed to turn up any sign of his identity.Over the next twenty-six years, through many twists and turns, the man insisted that he was a Czechoslovakian citizen named Karel Novák. In this episode, Rachel Pronger of the Invisible Women film collective brings us the story of iconoclastic Czech film multi-talent Ester Krumbachová. Ester was a screen writer, costume and stage designer, author, and film director. Her work was quirky, colorful, and political, lashing out at patriarchy and authoritarianism. She had a defining influence on Czech New Wave cinema, collaborating on more than twenty movies from the early 1960s on, including the delightful Daisies  and the perplexing Murdering the Devil. Her involvement in the satire A Report on the Party and Guests meant she was blacklisted from working in film by the Czechoslovakian communist party during much of the 1980s. She worked under pseudonyms, painted and made jewelry, returning to the film industry in the 1990s. Arizona-based writer and playwright Ashley Naftule returns to the podcast for a look at the Czechoslovak New Wave of the 1960s, focusing on the recently rediscovered 1963 film The Cassandra Cat, and its director Vojtěch Jasný,. In the strange fairy tale The Cassandra Cat, a village is disrupted when a travelling circus comes to town featuring a magical cat wearing sunglasses who can reveal the true natures of the townsfolk by changing their colours when he looks at them, turning thieves grey, hypocrites purple and lovers a bright red, scandalizing the adults into a panic and delighting all the children. One of the few directors to win two prizes at Cannes, Jasný is not as well remembered as his Czech contemporaries like Miloš Forman but the artistic movement he was a part of was extremely influential on world cinema, using avant-garde techniques and comedy to express modern Czechoslovakian concerns in the brief period where the Soviet Union permitted more freedom of expression and less censorship. We also discuss another, darker film by Jasný, 1969's All My Good Countrymen, made right when Moscow sent tanks to Czechoslovakia to crush the revolution and reestablish “normalization” of the state. Despite winning the Best Director prize at Cannes for it, Jasný was pressured by the new regime to apologize for making the film, and instead went into exile along with his contemporaries, with their films banned domestically until the final days of the Soviet Union. On the original LP, it opens the second side of the album.  Tommy is the fourth studio album by the English rock band the Who, first released on 19 May 1969.[2] Primarily written by guitarist Pete Townshend, Tommy is a double album and an early rock opera that tells the story of Tommy Walker and his experiences through life. The song tells how on Christmas morning, Tommy's father is worried about Tommy's future, and soul. His future is jeopardized due to being deaf, dumb, and blind.[2] The lyrics contrast religious themes such as Christmas and Jesus Christ with Tommy's ignorance of such matters. The rhetorical question, "How can he be saved from the eternal grave?" is asked about Tommy's condition and adds speculation as to the nature of original sin and eternal salvation. From wiki: “The Cremator (Czech: Spalovač mrtvol) is a 1969 Czechoslovak dark comedy horror film directed by Juraj Herz, based on a novel by Ladislav Fuks. The screenplay was written by Herz and Fuks. On this day in history, July 21, the North Atlantic Treaty, of NATO fame, was ratified in the Senate.In the wake of World War II, the United States emerged as an unrivaled superpower, boasting a robust military, thriving economy, and moral ascendancy. Despite a history of isolationism, encouraged since the time of George Washington, shifts in policy started to emerge. On March 12, 1947, President Harry S. Truman issued his doctrine of containment, signaling a departure from the U.S. tradition of avoiding non-domestic conflicts. Truman promised aid to all "free people" under threat, marking a shift with financial assistance to Greece and Turkey to shield them from communism. In 1948, the U.S. introduced the European Recovery Program, commonly known as the Marshall Plan, designed to rebuild war-devastated Europe and bolster its economies.Simultaneously, the Senate approved the Vandenburg Resolution in June 1948, paving the way for U.S. participation in peacetime collective defense systems. Beginning in 1948, confidential discussions among American, British, and Canadian officials eventually expanded to include other future Allies, laying the foundation for the North Atlantic Treaty. Despite strong isolationist and unilateralist sentiments in the Senate and among the American populace, significant events like the Berlin Blockade and the Czechoslovakian communist coup in 1948 helped alter perspectives on Europe. The Red Scare did a lot of that heavy lifting too. On April 4, 1949, U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson signed the North Atlantic Treaty, aligning the United States more closely with Europe's future. The Senate ratified this treaty on July 21, 1949, with an 83-13 vote. Four days later, President Truman and Secretary Acheson signed the Instrument of Accession, establishing the United States as a founding member of NATO. On July 20, 2023, New York City agreed to pay $13 million to hundreds of individuals arrested during the George Floyd protests in 2020. This marks the largest class action settlement ever paid to protesters in the United States. The protests were in response to the death of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. Each of the more than 1,300 protestors arrested between May 28 and June 4, 2020, will receive $9,950 as part of the settlement. However, those charged with crimes like arson or property destruction will not receive any part of the settlement, which still requires approval by U.S. District Court Judge Colleen McMahon. Allegations of police misconduct during the protests include the use of pepper spray, excessive force with batons, and "kettling", a practice where police corral protestors into a confined area. Earlier in March, New York had agreed to a separate $7 million settlement for over 300 people arrested during a June 4, 2020, demonstration in the Bronx.New York to pay $13 million to protesters arrested during George Floyd protests | ReutersFTX Trading has filed a lawsuit against its founder Sam Bankman-Fried and several former executives, aiming to recover over $1 billion they allegedly misused before the company's bankruptcy. The lawsuit, filed in Delaware bankruptcy court, also includes defendants Caroline Ellison, Zixiao "Gary" Wang, and Nishad Singh. FTX accuses the defendants of misappropriating funds for luxury real estate, political donations, speculative investments, and other personal interests, describing their actions as "one of the largest financial frauds in history." The alleged fraudulent transfers took place between February 2020 and November 2022, when FTX filed for Chapter 11 protection. Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to several criminal charges, while Ellison, Wang, and Singh have pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. The lawsuit alleges that a significant portion of the misappropriated funds included over $725 million of equity awarded without any return value, as well as $546 million used to purchase Robinhood Market shares. Twitter has asked for this consent order to be annulled, alleging FTC bias and overreach in its filings in a federal court in San Francisco. Warren, along with several other Democratic senators, previously urged the FTC to scrutinize Twitter's privacy policies post-layoffs and consider enforcing actions against its executives, if necessary. The subpoena demands all communications involving Twitter or Elon Musk between Warren's office and the FTC, as well as between her office and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Scheiner's research and teaching also focus on important issues surrounding democratic representation. Scheiner's first book, Democracy Without Competition in Japan: Opposition Failure in a One-Party Dominant State (2006 at Cambridge University Press) offers an explanation for opposition party failure in Japan, a democracy dominated by one party since 1955. Scheiner's second book, Electoral Systems and Political Context: How the Effects of Rules Vary across New and Established Democracies (co-authored with Robert Moser, 2012 at Cambridge University Press), examines elections around the world to understand when electoral rules will – and will not – have the effects typically expected of them. In addition, Scheiner was the co-editor, along with Robert Pekkanen, Steven Reed, and Daniel Smith, of the Japan Decides book series editions that offered analyses of the 2012, 2014, and 2017 lower house elections in Japan. He has also published articles on political parties, elections, and electoral systems across a range of political science and Asian studies journals. Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Author Laury A. Egan discusses her novel, Once, Upon an Island. This coming-of-age story is set on St. Croix in 1966 and follows 16-year-old Olivia and her glamorous mother as they escape to the island following the loss of Olivia's younger brother. Olivia befriends a mysterious Czechoslovakian woman named Sofiya, and the two bond over their mutual grief as long-buried secrets come to light. Laury visited St. Croix in 1966 when she was sixteen, and she vowed then to write a book about it. She has done so now, more than half a century later.

What drove one of the most consistent careers in tennis history? Hall of Famer Ivan Lendl credits his success to consistently showing up, believing in himself and putting in the work.
