S4:E6 - Fighting inequities y destruyendo school to prison pipelines We are back with a new interview episode, where our mic is YOURS!  Welcome,  Join us in celebrating Reyna Guerra-Vega, an amazing Latinx, brown, queer teacher in Arizona. Reyna (Rey) teaches special education math to high school students. In special education, there can be many inequities present, and she actively advocates to ensure that her students are receiving the best education that meets their needs. She understands that all students have strengths and funds of knowledge that they bring to the table, and meets students where they are at. She also advocates for her students beyond her classroom, no matter where life may take them. She has recently had encounters with the prison mail system, in which more inequities are present. Despite this, Rey continues to fight for her students. We are excited to bring you Season 4 with amazing conversations, tips and insights on how to handle both old and new topics arising in education. You can find more about Reyna and her work through: IG: @lareynita23 Our hope and vision for our podcast is to elevate the voices and needs of educators and students, especially those voices which are often silenced or overlooked. On today's episode we are talking to George Carmona, an producer here at our studio with a history in Special Education specifically working with kids with emotional disturbance and Ricky Marin a personal trainer, lifestyle coach and fitness competitor who had a rough time in his younger years to talk about what it's like growing up in a system that doesn't always have your best interest at heart. We cover the topic of "students with emotional disturbance", a demographic of students that is much larger than you would think and that in our opinion, is not paid attention to enough. Kids with severe emotional disturbance in George's words are sometimes considered to be put on a "pre school to prison pipeline" and are not given a fair chance because of their circumstances.

Today's episode of the Making Afterschool Cool podcast centers on the School to Prison Nexus. The practice of  assigning students who violate the zero-tolerance policies on their campus being placed into an alternative site, the juvenile system or the criminal justice system, was originally known as the school-to-prison pipeline. However, over the years, it has become evident that the school-to-prison pipeline is more complex than previously stated.  As a result, the phrase school to prison nexus emerged.  To discuss the difference between the two terms are my guests; Circe Stumbo and Angelina Ramirez. During this episode you will learn more regarding the: Purpose of Westwind Education Policy Inc. Definition of the school to prison pipeline Details surrounding how the school to prison nexus disproportionately impacts black and brown students Explanation of how the employment of  police officers as school security affects school climate and disproportionally increases the number of students of color receiving discipline citations Recommendations to help schools create a positive and inclusive environment Guest Circe Stumbo is president of West Wind Education Policy Inc. (West Wind), which she founded in January 2001. Circe has facilitated national and statewide blue-ribbon panels and summits, cross-functional working teams, organizational strategic planning processes, and equity leadership teams. This includes her current facilitation of Iowa's statewide Dyslexia Task Force. Circe has worked with fifty-seven states and territories through her collaborations with national and regional advocacy organizations and federal centers. Angelina Ramirez is a senior at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, majoring in both Political Science and Social and Criminal Justice. She is also a Project Assistant at West Wind Education Policy Inc.  Angelina also serves as Student Coordinator of Civic Engagement at Coe College, a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity,  an Intern for Advocates for Social Justice, and an English Second Language Teacher through the Adult Basic Education and Refugee & Immigrant Services Programs at the Catherine McAuley Center in Cedar Rapids.  Resources West  Wind Education Policy Inc westwinded.com Harris County Department of Education https://hcde-texas.org CASE for Kids https://hcde-texas.org/afterschool-zone

This is a preview of episode 65 where we discuss the School to Prison Nexus. The practice of putting students who violate the zero-tolerance policies on their campus were frequently pushed out of the traditional educational environment and are either placed into an alternative site, the juvenile system or the criminal justice system. This tendency originally became known as the school-to-prison pipeline. However, over the years, it has become evident that the school-to-prison pipeline theory is more complicated and multilayered.  As a result, a new term called the school to prison nexus as emerged.  To discuss the difference between the two terms are my guest, Circe Stumbo, and Angelina Ramirez. Ms. Stumbo is president of West Wind Education Policy Inc. which she founded in January of 2001. Angelina Ramirez is a senior at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, majoring in both Political Science and Social and Criminal Justice. An amazingly insightful podcast and one of our best yet! This week we introduce our friend Christopher Wright to the podcast. A teacher and student simultaneously who teaches Elementary school level children and is going for his Master's Degree. Chris grew up in Los Angeles but was brought up in mostly predominantly white schools in his early childhood, so we discuss how that's molded him and his outlook on life. There's some deep discussion about the concept of "School to Prison Pipelines" and how education in America is systematically divided by race and ethnicity and how it effects the Prison system in turn. The idea that if you're fighting for any human rights, that you should be fighting for all human rights, and the concept of "picking and choosing" is irresponsible and false cries for change. Conversation about the recent Red Table Talk about Asian and African American unity and how that would be beneficial to America. The idea that pinning minorities against each other as being the "bread and butter" that White America has thrived on since it's founding fathers formed this country. Asking the question of why White people tend to defend and get angry when discussing that history and systematic oppression, or even start to cry, rather than have a conversation about American History and what we can do to change the system? Also as to how and why White American's think it's logical to tell people of color to "go back home" when getting in arguments? Indigenous people are the only ones that didn't immigrate.... There's some discussion about Blacksploitation and Kung Fu films and while they were great representation in the media for people of color who had no representation at the time, it also set them up for stereotypes that White Americans cling to and still don't understand. Also about the Colorism (Racism within your own race) that happens and how it's detrimental to equal rights everywhere. Give it a listen as there's a lot of great conversation happening!!

Welcome to the Counter Narrative Podcast, a show designed to change the way we talk, and think, about education. By sharing stories of successes and triumphs, we aim to challenge the dominant narrative that often negatively portrays our disenfranchised populations. I'm your host, Charles Williams. An urban educator for more than 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, an educational consultant, an equity advocate, and the co-host of Inside The Principal's Office. Let's get started. -- This episode is a pause to ponder segment. These biweekly sessions will allow me to share with you my personal thoughts and reflections on a wide spectrum of topics as they relate to education. It is my hope that you will be able to take something from these segments and apply it in a meaningful way as you continue to do amazing work. Remember, while we all have different roles, we all have a single job, educating our students. -- The school-to-prison pipeline has been a conversation that has reverberated through our educational system for some time. This episode captures some of my thoughts and reflections about this shameful reality and how I played an active role in perpetuating the very systems of intolerance and injustice that I have dedicated myself to dismantling. Join me as I share some of the practices that existed in my schools, some of which may exist in yours, that ultimately contributed to some of my students finding themselves involved in the judicial system. -- I want to thank you for listening to The Counter Narrative Podcast. If you like what you are hearing, please be sure to like, subscribe, and of course share it with friends and family. I'd also love to hear your thoughts about the show so please leave a comment or two as well. Elementary Genocide: “From Primary to Penitentiary” exposes the socially engineered mechanism created by our government and utilizing the public school system to label elementary aged African American males as work for hire targets within the US penal system. Many refuse to believe there is a corporate attack on the minds and productivity of Black youth through intercepting their educational, economical and social development, and resulting in statistically funneling them through the revolving doors of the criminal justice system. Elementary Genocide confirms this theory and seeks to educate parents, teachers and families, so that we can reclaim our young men and ensure the future of our community.
