According to the Iowa Department of Justice, the state ranks 16th nationally for the number of residents 50-years-old and over. Approximately 18% of Iowa's more-than-three-million residents are 65 years old and older while 23% are under 18 years old. The average life expectancy in Iowa is 78.12—21st highest in the country. Today I speak with noted researcher and scholar Ben Franta about two new articles he has written that add to his growing archive of seminal work on climate change. Ben tells us now the fossil fuel industry paid economists to join scientists in denying the true nature of the fossil fuel industry's destruction of the environment. Economists argued that even if some science were correct, implementing change would be too costly. This became a powerful tool to stall and kill climate change legislation. Franta also talks about how communities have tried to sue fossil fuel companies for damages incurred by such misinformation and disinformation. In sum, we learn about what the industry has done, and how ordinary people and municipalities can fight back.Benjamin Franta is the founding head of the Climate Litigation Lab and a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford Sustainable Law Programme. The Climate Litigation Lab is a multidisciplinary research initiative to inform, enable, and accelerate climate change litigation globally. Ben is also an Associate at the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School and an Associate Member of Nuffield College, Oxford. Ben holds a JD from Stanford Law School and is a licensed attorney with the California State Bar, a PhD in History of Science from Stanford University, a separate PhD in Applied Physics from Harvard University, an MSc in Archaeological Science from the University of Oxford, and a BA in Physics and Mathematics from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is also a former research fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He is the recipient of numerous academic and research fellowships including the Stanford Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowship, the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, the U.S. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, the USAID Research and Innovation Fellowship, the University of Oxford Clarendon Scholarship, and the Coe College Williston Jones Scholarship. It can be as simple - and meaningful - as picking up a fiction novel, reading it, and discussing it with your book club. Because once you see, hear, and learn, we don't think you'll ever be able to “go back to how it used to be.” You'll change. You'll do things differently. You'll make ripple effects happen. Change is not a one-size-fits-all phenomenon, nor is change-making. More often than not, it starts small, local, and with just one intentional action. Today we bring you just that book that we recommend you read with your book club in 2024. The fabulous co-authors of Rebecca Not Becky, Christine Platt, and Catherine Wigginton Green, drew on both their lived experiences and their work as DEI advocates to bring you all a relatable story that will impact the way you see the world, no matter who you are! What to listen for: Why this book is different - written by DEI practitioners from a Black and white perspective What the authors found most challenging and surprising about writing the book The unexpected feedback the authors are receiving so far How helpful it is to write and post real, positive reviews on works like this About the authors: Both live in Washington, DC. CHRISTINE PLATT writes literature for children and adults that centers on African diasporic experiences—past, present, and future. She holds Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in African and African American studies as well as a Juris doctorate in general law. She currently serves as Executive Director for Baldwin For The Arts. CATHERINE WIGGINTON GREENE is a writer and filmmaker whose storytelling focuses on strengthening human connection and understanding. Her feature documentary “I'm Not Racist . . . The year turns extraordinary when tensions between China and the U.S. escalate: first tit-for-tat tariffs; then a worldwide pandemic; finally lockdowns, closed consulates, and expelled journalists. All the while, accusations are lobbed back and forth like flaming arrows launched over the Pacific. Against this background of aggression, Wendy tries to teach a class in American culture. Instead, her students describe the realities of growing up in an emerging global power. Through their experiences and compelling perspectives, the students debate various issues, such as environmentalism, gender, healthcare and political conflict. The Same Bright Moon is a collaborative memoir highlighting the stories of these students through their assignments, discussions and poetry at the height of Covid-19. Their vibrant voices will challenge, inspire, and bring hope for the future. Thanks for this wonderful conversation, Wendy! This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, August 16. The great weather continues! According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly sunny with a high near 78 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area on Tuesday. On Tuesday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 58 degrees. Coe College on Monday unveiled a new dean of diversity, equity and inclusion following controversy last fall. In addition to serving as the private Cedar Rapids college's lead diversity officer, Donald Jaamal will function as its Title IX coordinator — a dual role making him part of Coe's “senior staff,” a stipulation Coe community members included among their demands issued in November. Jaamal — the fourth diversity officer in Coe history, after it established an Office of Diversity and Inclusion in 2015 — was hired following an extensive national search, according to a Coe news release Monday. He started work Aug. 8. Coe — last fall and in the months since — has fhttps://www.thegazette.com/higher-education/even-if-case-closed-coe-college-remains-focus-of-diversity-questions/ (aced questions and criticism )over its handling of diversity, equity and inclusion issues after former trustee Darryl Banks resigned over a closed-door dispute among board members leading up to their selection of new Coe President David Hayes. Banks, a Coe alum who spent more than 40 years on the board, said he raised diversity-related concerns with the presidential search but that a fellow trustee called him a liar. Banks sought a reprimand, apology and a retraction, but never got them. The historic Guaranty Bank building and Old World Theater property is now listed for sale as efforts to transform the buildings into two hotels and restaurants as a “cornerstone” project in the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids have faltered, the potential developer said Monday. “That one specifically does not appear to be on the horizon,” Mike Whalen, president and chief executive officer of the Heart of America Group, said of his proposal that called for an approximately $50 million investment to restore the buildings on most of the block at Third Street and Third Avenue SE. “ … In the end, there was maybe a difference of opinion with the owner as to the value of the property that could not be resolved.” GLD Commercial lists the selling price at $3.1 million for the property, which was built in 1895. Adam Gibbs, vice president of GLD, said the property has been marketed for about 90 days locally and regionally, and there is a “fair amount of interested parties” so far considering some kind of historic tax credit redevelopment. The Linn County Correctional Center has adjusted its agreement for housing federal inmates in an effort to address deputy complaints and resignations about overtime work at the jail. Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner said that because the jail has been short staffed, deputies have been required to work overtime to meet the minimum number of corrections officers required for each shift. The number of officers needed each day depends on the number of inmates. “They have been complaining about the overtime that they've been required to work. In fact, we've lost some deputies, very good deputies, to other agencies because of the amount of overtime that we're requiring them to work,” Gardner said. One cause for the overtime has been requirements for the federal inmates held there, which usually constitute one-fourth to one-third of the jail's total population. As part of the jail's contract with the U.S. Marshals Service and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, two deputies are required to accompany federal inmates when they leave the jail for things like a doctor's appointment or to go to the hospital. To address the problem, Gardner reached a new agreement with the U.S. Marshals and ICE. Federal agencies will be required to transport their detainees to and from scheduled medical...

And that's what drives me.” “As part of our historical narrative, Coe has always been that kind of place that is accessible, and this is pushing Coe to be more accessible and open to more populations than it has historically been.” OTHER RESOURCES: DOIT program: response.diverseeducation.com/DOIT2020 PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: Visit the Diverse: Issues In Higher Education website: diverseeducation.com Or follow us on social media: Twitter: twitter.com/diverseissues Instagram: instagram.com/diverseissuesinhighereducation Facebook: facebook.com/DiverseJobs?_rdc=1&_rdr Linkedin: linkedin.com/company/diverse-issues-in-higher-education Transcription services are available upon request. In this episode, Meira Kensky, Joseph E. McCabe Associate Professor of Religion at Coe College, discusses her work on ancient and medieval Jewish and Christian apocalyptic texts. She explains, in particular, the appeal of their fictive descriptions of otherworldly journeys—including to hell—and the realness of these other worlds for the communities in which the texts circulated. In addition, Kensky discusses the continuing role that apocalyptic thought plays in contemporary American religious communities, using the example of the Evangelical Christian book series Left Behind. Speaking in the aftermath of the Capitol attack and in the lead up to the presidential inauguration, she also draws connections between ancient apocalypse and modern conspiracy theories, with special focus on QAnon and its distinctly religious qualities.
If you read or watch the news, you would easily believe that Black boys and men's educational trajectories are bleak and that they are impervious to success (Harper, 2012). While Black boys and men are one of the most marginalized groups in the U.S., the perception that they do not care about education is not true. In an effort to dispel these stereotypes and perceptions, we center the lived experience of an early-career Black male scholar and professor. Listen as we unpack what it means to be a Black man on campus, from Black identity formation as an undergrad student at a Historically Black University (HBCU) to completing advanced graduate degrees at a Predominately White Institution (PWIs), and everything else in between. To discuss this journey, we are joined by Dr. Christopher Johnson. His dissertation, Negotiating Black Male Identity While Navigating Predominately White Institutions, explored Black male doctoral students' strategies and behaviors to manage their interracial interaction with their White faculty and peers at a Predominately White Institution (PWI). Dr. Johnson is an assistant professor at Coe College, where he teaches Sport and Black Culture, Interracial Communication, and interracial interactions. You can find him on Instagram @DeepAsEmptyPockets. Resources Harper, S. R., & Davis III, C. H. (2012). Coach Martin is a perfect guest for the Shooters Touch. A basketball junkie who has spent a ton of time in the coaching ranks here in Iowa and the Midwest. He comes to Coe from The University of North Dakota where he helped bring that school from Division II to Division I. It's super interested talking to him about that team and some of the trials and tribulations of no post season or conference affiliation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theshooterstouch/support
