For this episode we do something a little different, going through some of the hottest subjects of discourse of the current moment as a way to review lots of the major themes we've covered in Drunk Church so far. Honoring our Villain Arc, we talk generational divides, the ludicrousness of a "Trans Inclusive" Radfem, overall rise in fascistic sentiment across generations, and, perhaps most importantly, the ways in which understanding queerness as being always built up and against perversion is more relevant than ever.In place of confessions, we share the submissions we received after our "Trauma & Taboo: The Unspeakability of Sexual Violation" episode from when we created an anonymous space for people to share their own unspeakable or unsayable experiences of violation. If you would like to listen to the full episode on a patreon only RSS feed, sign up for Drunk Church on Patreon. Continuing with our Season 2 Villain Arc, we examine the vilification of victims and the gridlock of taboos that surround sexual violation through a discussion of our very own Aurora Laybourn's original work “Cavarero's Repugnance: Naming Sexual Violence”. Building from a critique of Adriana Cavarero's "Horrorism", Aurora argues that the repugnance of sexual violence has a silencing effect that renders it unintelligible and unspeakable by recontextualizing Medusa, the figure Cavarero uses to represent the horror she evoked on others, as a rape victim herself.. The figure of Medusa exposes how when faced with victims and their narratives we overt our eyes and choose not to see, preferring to villainize them instead. Looking straight on has a freezing effect, as to do so would force us to confront the horrifying extent to which we are implicated in perpetuating the negative effects of sexual violence. We apply this critique to a wide range of issues ranging from interpersonal harm, plagiarism, sex work and transness—asking ourselves what it means to engage with the messy intelligibility of violation regardless of the horror, and to see the human face behind the gorgon's mask. Welcome to episode #139! This week, Braden is the host and Matt is in the guest chair as they discuss a painful moment in Matt's life that taught him the importance of naming pain in order to experience healing and growth.Avoiding pain can be destructiveWhen we avoid pain or sweep it under the rug, we are being impacted by that pain in destructive ways. It can affect our behaviour, lead us to addictive activities like porn use, and establish unhealthy patterns in our relationships. What we don't address in our life may control us without us even knowing it, but when we invite God to reveal those moments or memories, change and healing will inevitably happen. We may not initially feel any painSometimes past memories aren't accompanied by feelings of extreme pain or hurt, but that doesn't always mean it hasn't impacted us. In Matt's case he had a memory that didn't cause him emotional pain until he came face-to-face with the trauma of his experience. Once God revealed how he was impacted, Matt learned of the pain he had been unknowingly carrying for 17 years. All of us may feel numb or that we are unaffected by a memory, but inviting God to reveal to us whether or not we have pain from past memories can open the door to the healing we need to undergo to move forward. Invite God into our pain and name it!We can only deal with past hurt or trauma on our own to a point, so we need God to uncover our pain and bring healing to those areas of our lives. When we invite God to work in those areas, we encounter His power that changes our lives! We need to name our pain so that we can heal and grow!Share this with your friendsWho do you know that can benefit from this podcast and other episodes coming in the future? The HBS hosts ask Dr. Linda Alcoff just how close to the edge of the bed is the United States sleeping?A year and a half ago, as an angry, armed mob stormed the U.S. Capitol building in what was, thankfully, an unsuccessful insurrection attempt, many of us watching the event unfold on television asked ourselves: is democracy itself in peril? This is, of course, a question we should have been asking for many years prior to Jan 6, 2021. And it is a question we should still be asking. At the federal level, an activist and regressive Supreme Court is aggressively chipping away at the rights of citizens, and an almost perpetually-stalemated Congress refuses to act on real existential threats (like climate change, COVID, and income inequality). At the state level, more than half of the legislatures have restricted voting rights, gun regulation, and protections for BIPOC, women, LGBTQ people, and the poor. States' legislatures are busy gerrymandering districts, under-funding public education, over-funding police, and extending corporate welfare tax benefits carte blanche, while at the same time refusing to raise the minimum wage for workers, mitigate the affordable housing crisis, repair crumbling infrastructure, or exhibit even the most minimally-decent concern for the good of their citizens. Meanwhile, the average U.S. citizen is sick, indebted, demoralized, underinformed (or misinformed), and disillusioned. Why vote? Why care? What has democracy done for me lately? Today, we're going to be talking about the peril(s) that democracy is facing, how we should think about them, and what, if anything, we can do about them.We are honored to be joined by Linda Martin Alcoff, Professor of Philosophy at Hunter College and CUNY Graduate Center. Prof. Alcoff is the author, most recently of Rape and Resistence: Understanding the Compoexities of Sexual Violation and The Future of Whiteness.Full episode notes at this link:http://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-70-democracy-in-peril-with-linda-alcoff-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe, submit a rating/review, and follow us on Twitter @hotelbarpodcast.You can also help keep this podcast going by supporting us financially at patreon.com/hotelbarsessions.

In her shining new book Sexual Violation in Islamic Law: Substance, Evidence, and Procedure (Cambridge University Press, 2015), Hina Azam, Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas-Austin, explores the diversity and complexity of pre-modern Muslim legal discourses on rape and sexual violation. The reader of this book is treated to a thorough and delightful analysis of the range of attitudes, assumptions, and hermeneutical operations that mark the Muslim legal tradition on the question of sexual violation. Indeed, the most remarkable aspect of this book is the way it showcases the staggering range and diversity of approaches to defining and adjudicating rape that populate the Muslim legal tradition. Focusing primarily on the Maliki and Hanafi schools of law, Azam convincingly demonstrates that Muslim legal discourses on rape were animated and informed by competing ways of imagining broader categories such as sovereignty, agency, property, and rights. In our conversation, we talked about problems of translation involved in using the category of rape in relation to pre-modern discursive archives, proprietary and theocentric approaches to sexual ethics in medieval Islam, the differences between the Maliki and Hanafi school on defining and punishing male-female rape, and the implications and significance of this study to the contemporary legal landscape in Muslim societies. This meticulously researched and lucidly written book will be of much interest to students of Islam, Islamic Law, Gender and Sexuality, and Muslim intellectual history. It will also make a great contribution to upper level undergraduate and graduate seminars on these topics. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
