Earlier this month, Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, celebrated his 50th birthday – with a noose-themed cake, and a message written in icing: ‘Sometimes dreams come true.' As the Guardian's senior Middle East correspondent, Emma Graham-Harrison, explains, for decades Israel had an effective moratorium on capital punishment. Yet in the past two months it has passed two laws around the death penalty – to be applied seemingly only to Palestinians. Annie Kelly asks about this new era of the Israeli justice system, and whether there are any dissenting voices in the country against it

Text: Numbers 11-14; 20-24; 27 Supplemental Text: The Third Thousand Years chapters 18-19 BYU Lecture 22: The law of carnal commandments include many different sacrifices and oblations which are discussed. The Lord hates them because as a schoolmaster, the law was not obeyed by Israel with humility or a contrite spirit. These carnal commandments were fulfilled and taken away at the time of Christ. The laws of reparation are discussed and explained, such as “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” This God-given law is not a law of vengeance or revenge as it is taught generally, but a beautiful law of reparation which benefits the victim, the perpetrator and the entire society. The law of Capital Punishment is also largely misunderstood, which is discussed and explained according to scripture as God delivered it. Properly understood, this sacred law allows for agency and it benefits society. As Moses brings the people of Israel closer to the promised land, their complaints and whining become so unbearable that Moses goes to the Lord for help. The Lord organizes the Sanhedrin, or council of 70, to assist Moses.  He also sends them quail for meat because they complained about the manna. Those who lusted for the quail died from gluttony. As the camp arrives near the Promised Land they send in spies to check the military might of the enemy. To their astonishment, they find the land full of mighty Anaks, or very large people (similar to Goliath). They panick, replace Moses with a new leader and flee. This so angers the Lord that He refuses to let any of the adult Israelites to ever enter the promised land, with the only exception to be Caleb and Joshua. Israel is condemned to wander in the wilderness 38 more years until all these original adult Israelites die off.

SEASON 4 EPISODE 82: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (3:00) SPECIAL COMMENT: Call me a cynic but I am beginning to get a sense that you may have some doubts about this Not-An-Assassination Attempt at The White House Correspondents Dinner. Well - that's what it was. Or in this case, what it wasn't. The acting attorney general says the alleged perp quote “was stopped before he got anywhere near the President.” So, NOT an assassination attempt, per the attorney general. But of course the White House is still trying to sell it as one (its 'protocol director' insists it was "the hand of God" again; its deputy chief of staff tried to start another 'USA!' chant after the incident). Even though proximity is the definition of such a nightmare scenario. Saturday Night? Obama had 15 of those. Still, among my fellow Americans who are NOT in the Trump Mass Hypnosis Cult, I may be in the minority because I DON’T think it was staged. Why are you so cynical? Just because an hour beforehand Karoline Leavitt told Fox quote “There will be some shots fired tonight!” That’s a coincidence. Just because Trump has gone insane about his quote “militarily top secret ballroom” and the next thing you know he’s GOING to a ballroom and after that the Secret Service screws up security AT the ballroom and after THAT he’s holding a press conference saying this is WHY he needs that ballroom and all his sock puppets are tweeting about the ballroom. Coincidence! Just because Trump and his filth have lied to you about every THING, every DAY, for 11 years… that’s no reason for you to think that was STAGED. It’s a coincidence! It’s all a coincidence. ALSO: for God's sake stop saying there's no room for violence in American politics and we don't resolve our differences this way! Certainly we all wish that were true. But in point of fact there's room for almost nothing BUT violence in American politics! Ask JFK, Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Garfield, Lincoln, McKinley, dozens of others! What was the Civil War if not political violence? B-Block (28:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Staten Island cop who has reportedly amassed more than 500 speeding tickets, and last year averaged one every other day. Jeff Bezos' Washington Post will only print a letter to the editor responding to its editorial if the authors take out the references TO Jeff Bezos. And Tom Cotton makes a hilarious mistake: Iran will meet its match not on the battlefield but at the bargaining table because it's never faced the author of "Art Of The Deal." Who's gonna tell him? C-Block (41:00) MONDAYS WITH THURBER: We need a break from media people talking about themselves so let's drop "Things I Promised Not To Tell" and instead read you his wonderful, weird, slightly spooky "The Black Magic Of Barney Haller." Send us Fan MailBlood shows up everywhere in our stories, our movies, and our arguments but Genesis treats it with a gravity most of us have forgotten. We sit with Genesis 9:5–6 and slow down long enough to hear what God is actually saying: blood represents life, and life is sacred because people are made in the image of God. That single claim reshapes how we think about violence, dignity, and what we owe each other when harm is done. From that foundation, we talk about justice in the real world. Genesis 9 doesn't hand us a full legal blueprint, but it does establish human government under God and a clear accountability for murder. That takes us into a careful look at capital punishment and the death penalty, including an honest acknowledgment that our judicial systems can be broken. We explain why flaws in human institutions don't cancel God's moral standard, and why the passage rejects personal revenge while calling society to ordered justice. Then we ask the hard question: is there room for mercy? Scripture's own stories answer yes, and we look at what mercy looks like without pretending sin is small. We close by tracing the Hebrew word for “shed” (Shapak) through the Bible until it lands on Jesus, the one whose blood is poured out for us. If this helped you, subscribe, share the show with a friend, and leave a review. The defense presented 12 motions challenging various aspects of Idaho's capital punishment framework, including the constitutionality of execution methods and the applicability of certain aggravating factors. After thorough consideration, Judge Hippler denied all motions, affirming that the death penalty remains a viable sentencing option in this case. The court's 55-page decision systematically addressed each defense argument, referencing precedents set by the Idaho Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court that uphold the constitutionality of capital punishment. Judge Hippler concluded that the defense's claims did not warrant the removal of the death penalty, allowing the prosecution to continue seeking it as a potential sentence. Dave Rich concludes his examination of how Christians should approach the Old Testament for ethical guidance. Building on previous lessons about the Mosaic law, Rich shifts focus to the creation ordinances—commands given to Adam before the law of Moses even existed. He walks through Genesis to identify seven binding ordinances that remain in force today: procreation, subduing the earth, dominion over creatures, labor, the weekly Sabbath, and marriage. Rich demonstrates how these foundational commands inform modern ethical debates on work, environmentalism, marriage and sexuality, abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment. He shows how each of the Ten Commandments finds expression in New Testament teaching, proving that Christians haven't abandoned Old Testament morality but understand it through the lens of the new covenant established in Christ. The message includes practical teaching on the threefold use of God's law: its pedagogical function in revealing our sin and driving us to the gospel, its civil function in restraining evil and maintaining order, and its normative function in guiding believers toward obedience. Rich emphasizes that while Christians are not legally bound to the Mosaic law, they remain obligated to learn from it and apply its principles as God's revealed wisdom for righteous living. ★ Support this podcast ★

According to Amnesty International, 15 countries used the death penalty in 2024. The United States was one of those countries. Capital punishment is illegal in 23 states and isn’t used in some of the states where it is legal. But the United States still executed 25 people in 2024 and nearly twice as many people in 2025. But amidst all the statistics and lofty arguments for and against, it’s important to remember that capital punishment affects real people. It impacts both the people sentenced to death, and the families who’ve lost loved ones to violence. This hour, we’re listening back to our episode about what the death penalty means to the human beings impacted by it. Staff Writer at The Atlantic and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Elizabeth Bruenig, has seen the impact of the death penalty firsthand. She’s also lost a family member to violence. While many journalists cover capital punishment, fewer are applying to attend the executions of people on death row. In a deeply personal conversation, Khalilah Brown-Dean talks with Bruenig about her coverage of capital punishment. Her recent cover story in The Atlantic is, 'Witness: Inside America's Death Chambers - What Years of witnessing executions taught me about sin, mercy and the possibility of redemption.' Bruenig describes her own family tragedy, the realities of death by lethal injection, and why her feelings about capital punishment have changed over time. Plus, the pair describe the complex emotions victims’ families grapple with in the aftermath of tragedy. In early 1948, Los Angeles couples were terrorized by a series of robberies and car thefts committed by a criminal the press dubbed “The Red Light Bandit,” a reference to the red light he used to flag down his victims. Fortunately, the bandit's crime spree was quickly cut short when police arrested Caryl Chessman, a Los Angeles resident with a criminal history going back to his teen years.Chessman was charged with multiple counts of robbery, rape, grand theft, and because of an unusual interpretation of events, he was also charged with kidnapping. Due to the attachment of kidnapping, several of the charges were defined as a capital offense and Chessman was convicted and sentenced to death. In the years following his conviction, Chessman's death sentence became a source of considerable controversy—an already controversial sentence applied in a non-lethal case due to a bizarre application of the law. For ten years, Chessman fought the sentence all the way to the US Supreme Court, with support from a wide variety of sources, both notable and ordinary.
