Once I saw the trailer to Maliki: Poison of the Past, I knew I had to give it a chance as the cool looking anime-like vibe pulled me in (the characters are clearly based on the late, great Akira Toriyama's style), as well it's unique turn-based RPG battles that keeps things fun and interesting. Based on a French manga series (which explains the anime look), the plot places you into the life of a young lady named Sand.

Nouri al-Maliki was Prime Minister of Iraq between 2006 and 2014, a tenure that makes him easily the country's longest serving post-2003 prime minister. Maliki became Iraq's head of government in the maelstrom of Iraq's sectarian civil war, following the 2003 US-UK invasion of the country. Today's is a story of the collapse of the Iraqi state, and the highly imperfect efforts to rebuild it made necessary by the liquidation of virtually all of Saddam Hussein's institutions by the United States within a matter of weeks. The level of hubris displayed by the US both before and after the invasion is extraordinary, and on perhaps no issue did the US not do its homework to a more embarrassing degree than the difference between Sunni and Shia muslims. Indeed, President Bush is reported to have been surprised on finding out in 2003 that Iraq had two different kinds of Muslim living in it. My guest today is Renad Mansour. Renad is a senior research fellow and project director of the Iraq Initiative at Chatham House. He is also a senior research fellow at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, and a research fellow at the Cambridge Security Initiative based at Cambridge University. Önceki yazımızda Hz. Ukbe b. Nafi'nin (ra), Tanca'yı da fethederek, serin dalgalarıyla atının ayaklarını ıslatan Atlas Okyanusu'na doğru “Rabbim, şayet önümdeki şu deniz olmasaydı ben bu ülkede senin yolunda cihat etmek üzere devam edip gidecektim” şeklindeki nidasını onun cihat konusundaki cehdine örnek olarak vermiştik. Cihat, İslam'ın en muhteşem eylem biçimlerinden biridir. Çünkü hayatın her cephesini kapsar. Asla tarafgirlik yapmazlar. Onlar Allah'ın nurudurlar, Kendi işleriyle uğraşırlar, kalpleri temizdir. Burası Mağrib'in medar-i iftiharı, sultanın merkezi, ana rükunlardan biridir.
Sadece Sana ibadet ediyoruz. Çünkü sen Allâhsın. Sadece Senden yardım taleb ediyoruz. Çünkü Sen Rabb'sın. Bizi dosdoğru yola hidayet et, çünkü Sen Rahmân'sın. Bize istikâmeti rızık olarak ver, çünkü Sen Rahimsin. Bize nimet ve kerem yağmurlarını indir, çünkü Sen din gününün mâlikisin.” Hz. Peygamber (s.a.v.): “İslâm beş esas üzerine bina edilmiştir: Allâh'tan başka ilâh olmadığına ve Muhammed'in Allâh'ın Resûlü olduğuna şehadet etmek; namazı dosdoğru kılmak; zekât vermek; Ramazan orucunu tutmak ve Kâbe'yi haccetmek” buyurmuştur.

*) Netanyahu prolonging Gaza war to stay in power Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al Maliki has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of prolonging the Gaza conflict to maintain power. Al Maliki criticised Israel's use of starvation as a weapon of war, citing nearly 600,000 Palestinians on the brink of famine, and expressed disappointment with the international community's lack of action. Al Maliki emphasised the need for the international community to address the Palestinian cause, urging pressure on Netanyahu for a ceasefire. *) Israel 'lost the war' in Gaza even if it invades Rafah — Hezbollah Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah declared Israel's defeat in Gaza, stating that even an invasion of the southern city of Rafah would not change the outcome. Nasrallah emphasised Israel's failure to achieve any victories or objectives after six months of fighting, asserting that the Israeli army is exhausted on all fronts. According to Nasrallah, Israel's casualties are much higher than officially reported, and the army lacks sufficient troops to sustain the conflict. Official figures show Israel has killed over 31,270 Palestinians and wounded more than 73,020. *) UN to send aid to Haiti via 'airbridge' as 'Barbecue' vows to fight on United Nations aims to establish an "airbridge" between Haiti and the Dominican Republic to bolster aid delivery and facilitate personnel movement amid Haiti's ongoing crisis, according to the UN's Haiti mission. The initiative seeks to ensure seamless assistance and anticipates the arrival of additional crisis management personnel to address the dire situation. Meanwhile, Jimmy Cherizier, a prominent Haitian gang leader known as "Barbecue," has declared his coalition's intent to continue the fight for Haiti's liberation, despite the prime minister's resignation. *) Islamophobia 'an unacceptable form of racism' — Russia Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has said Islamophobia is "an unacceptable form of racism" during a news conference in Moscow. She emphasised Russia's solidarity with the stances of Muslim nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on this matter. Zakharova stressed the importance of combating discrimination and harassment against Muslims based on religious affiliation, advocating for religious freedoms that respect both the individual and collective rights of believers. Moreover, Zakharova announced Russia's support for a draft resolution proposed by Muslim countries at the UN General Assembly titled "Measures to Combat Islamophobia." This resolution is dedicated to the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, observed annually on March 15. The German sportswear giant terminated its contract with the US rapper in late 2022 after he sparked controversy with anti-Semitic social media posts. The end of their partnership disrupted Adidas' revenue flow and left the company burdened with a surplus of unsold Yeezy trainers. The company reported a loss of $82 million in 2023, a sharp decline from the previous year's profit of $670 million.

Al-Inshiqāq (Arabic: الانشقاق, "The Sundering", "Splitting Open") is the eighty-fourth chapter (surah) of the Qur'an, with 25 verses (āyāt). It mentions details of the Day of Judgment when, according to this chapter, everyone will receive reckoning over their deeds in this world.[2] Summary 1-5 Signs of the Judgment Day 6-15 The books of the righteous and the wicked given into their hands, and the consequence thereof 16-20 Oaths attesting the doctrine of the resurrection 21-25 The unbelievers denounced and threatened [3] The name of the chapter, Al-Inshiqaq, is a noun variously translated as "The Sundering", "The Bursting Asunder", "The Splitting Open", among others. This name comes from the first verse of the chapter which reads When the sky is rent asunder. The verse does not contain the word al-inshiqaq verbatim, but rather it contains a word of the same root. It is a reference to the destruction of the world at the end of days, which the chapter portend. Thematically, the chapter follows a day-of-judgement theme that is present in the preceding chapters, including Al-Infitar (the 82nd chapter) and Al-Mutaffifin (83rd).[4][5][6] The chapter begins (verses 1 to 5) by mentioning events that will happen on the Day of Judgment, including the sundering of the sky and the flattening of all that is on earth. Verses 6 to 15 talk about the disparity between those who in that day will be "given [their] book in [their] right hand" and have a joyful reckoning, and those who will not. A series of oaths (verses 16—18) follows, and then another contrast between the fate of the believers and the unbelievers in the day of judgment.[7] Prostration Further information: Sujud § Sajdah of recitation According to the hadith, Muhammed was prostrated when reciting this chapter, particularly after the verse 21 which reads ... and that when the Quran is recited unto them, they do not prostrate? Therefore, most Islamic scholars consider this verse one of the 15 verses in the Quran where one prostrates after reciting it. In most copies of the Qur'an these are indicated by the symbol ۩.[8] Most Maliki jurists consider it obligatory to prostrate after reciting the verse; Malik ibn Anas, the founder of the Maliki school, was a notable exception.[9][10]
In this episode, the Beyond the Byline podcast looks into the EU's new push towards a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.EU foreign ministers held a flurry of separate meetings in Brussels this week - with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki as well as other Arab ministers - to discuss how to achieve peace in the Middle East. The EU's peace plan ambitions hit a big wall in the face of Israel's flat-out rejection.Euractiv's Global Europe and Defence editor, Alexandra Brzozowski, explains the main takeaways from the talks.
For day 7 of "Be Quranic," we explore the layered meanings of the fourth Ayah in Suratul Fatiha, "Maliki yawm ad-deen," examining the nuanced interpretations of 'Malik' as both a 'king' and an 'owner'. This verse powerfully highlights Allah's complete dominion over the Day of Judgement, underscoring His governance over every aspect of that pivotal day. We ponder over 'ad-deen', representing both our faith and a precise reckoning, reminding us of our profound indebtedness to Allah for our existence and his ongoing providence. This session's insight encourages us to find equilibrium between our hope for Allah's mercy and our awe of His justice, as we consider our deeds under the watchful eye of "Maliki Yawmiddin" – the Sovereign and Proprietor of the Day of Judgement. #BeQuranic #Day7 #DeepReflections #SpiritualJourney
Rerun: When George W Bush flew to Baghdad for a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on 14th December, 2008, he had hoped the headlines would reflect his triumphant appraisal of his deployment of American troops. Instead, it became known as the day he got some shoes thrown at him. The man throwing the shoes was Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi, who yelled in Arabic: “This is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, dog!”. The president ducked, and Zaidi let his other shoe fly. “This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq!”. Bush ducked that one too. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly reveal how the episode inspired a brief moment of Zaidi-Mania in the Arab world, including various offers of marriage; reflect on the torture he endured as a result of his protest; and investigate the copycat attacks around the world… Further Reading: • ‘Raw Video: Iraqi Journalist Throws Shoe at Bush' (AP, 2008): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM3Z_Kskl_U • ‘Why I threw the shoe, by Muntazer al-Zaidi' (The Guardian, 2009): https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2009/sep/17/why-i-threw-shoe-bush • ‘The Iraqi Journalist Who Threw His Shoes at George W. On this edition of Parallax Views, Dr. Katherine "Kitty" Harvey, who is adjunct assistant professor in the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University and holds a doctorate from King's College London, joins us to discuss her book A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: The Saudi Struggle for Iraq. Dr. Harvey delves into the complex relationship between Saudi Arabia and Iraq, and how it has affected the region's politics and international relations. She also provides a unique perspective on the topic and discusses how the Saudi struggle for power in the region has been a self-fulfilling prophecy. The episode hopefully offers a thought-provoking analysis of the dynamics between these two countries and should be a must-listen for anyone interested in Middle Eastern politics. Among the topics discussed on during the conversation: - The story of how Kitty became interested in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, and the Iraq War; studying the Arabic language and how that contributed to her journey leading to her examination of Saudi policy on Iraq after the U.S. invasion of said country in 2003 - Saudi Arabia's opposition the George W. Bush administration's invasion of Iraq and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein - Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Saudi fears about Iraqi Shia and Iranian sympathies in Iran - The Constructivist view of International Relations and its application in Kitty's book - The Realist view of International Relations and its application in Kitty's book; The Origins of Alliances author Stephen Walt - Questions of Saudi interference in Iraqi elections after the U.S. invasion - Iraqi Shia identity vs. Iranian Shia identity - Did Saudi Arabia push Iraq closer to Iran after the invasion? - And more!
On March 20, 2003, a "coalition of the willing," made up of the U.S. and its allies, entered Iraq. They knew who their enemy was: Saddam Hussein and his Ba'athist army. The coalition made short work of defeating the Iraqi military, but, as everyone knows, the worst was yet to come. The Iraqi insurgency took many forms and made a common cause with Sunni jihadist groups, connected to al-Qaeda. While the U.S. was distracted, fighting the Sunni insurgency, Iran made its move. A Shiite militia, known as the Badr Corps, established itself through Shiite political leaders like Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, to allow Iran to eventually control Iraq. Today, twenty years later, the Islamic Republic of Iran is the main political force in Baghdad and pro-Tehran militias operate in Iraq with impunity. No one knows more about how America's intelligence failures in Iraq played into the hands of Iran - than Michael Pregent - a former US Army Signals Intelligence Operator, who, as a civilian advisor, was embedded into the extra-constitutional Office of the Commander-in-Chief led by then Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad. Michael not only saw firsthand how an Iranian-backed Shia militia party was set up to control Iraq's security and political process, but he also warned US policymakers about Qods Force General Qassem Soleimani's rise to prominence in Iraq, well before the rest of the world learned about this terrorist mastermind when he was killed by a US drone strike in Baghdad in 2020. For Episode 18 of the Border Wars Podcast, two combat veterans of the Iraq War, sit down to discuss the lessons learned from the last twenty years. Joseph Humire is joined by Michael Pregent who is now a Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute and an expert on intelligence and Middle Eastern affairs. This month, we celebrate our first year of the Social Protection Podcast. Over 16 episodes, we have explored controversial ideas like Universal Basic Income, dived deep on landmark programmes like Bolsa Familia and explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social protection systems worldwide. In this episode, we are talking about another ambitious agenda, Universal Social Protection or USP2030. Under the co-leadership of the World Bank and the International Labour Organisation, USP2030 was created with a mission to achieve social protection for all at any time. To this end, it urges countries and international partners to support the global commitment to implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, by 2030. The third USP 2030 membership assembly will be held this month and we thought this would be a good opportunity to discuss one of the many paths to expanding social protection. We have asked our guests to reflect on approaches that blur the traditional lines between social assistance and social insurance and what it might take to reach that ambitious 2030 goal. Our guests for this episode are: Maliki, Director for Poverty Alleviation and Community Empowerment, Ministry of national Development Planning Shea McClanahan, Senior Social Policy Specialist, Development Pathways Plus, to contribute to our monthly segment of ‘Quick Wins' which highlights news, achievements, and research that have shaped recent developments and sparked our interest, we heard from: Veronika Wodsak, Social Protection Policy Specialist, ILO Resources: Disability - Social Protection - Inclusion: Dialogue for change World Social Protection Report 2020-22: Social protection at the crossroads – in pursuit of a better future The USP 2030 Agenda Global partnership for Universal Social Protection to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals
Katherine Harvey, A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: The Saudi Struggle for Iraq, Oxford University Press 2022 Iraq has in the last year taken a lead in sponsoring talks between Middle Eastern arch-rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran in an effort to prevent tension in the region spinning out of control. The Iraqi role is remarkable given that Saudi Arabia for more than a decade after the 2003-led US invasion of Iraq and the toppling of Saddam Hussein wanted nothing to do with the country's post-Saddam leadership. Saudi perceptions of Iraq as an Iranian pawn persuaded it even to refuse reopening a diplomatic mission in Baghdad until 2019. In Self-fulfilling Prophet: The Saudi Struggle for Iraq (Oxford University Press 2022), Katherine Harvey paints a fascinating picture of what happens when policy is crafted based on perception rather than fact. Harvey tells the story of a post-invasion Iraq that was systematically rebuffed by Saudi Arabia in its efforts to reintegrate into the predominantly Sunni Arab world. Iraq had been ostracized following its 1990 invasion of Kuwait and expulsion from the Gulf state in 1991 by a US-coalition. Saudi King Abdullah, convinced that Iran had successfully infiltrated Iraq and that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was an Iranian stooge, blocked Iraq's reaching out to the kingdom and eventually drove into the hands of Iran. In doing so, Saudi Arabia was standing up for its perceived interests that diverged from those of the United States. The US wanted the Saudis to engage with the Shiite Muslim majority that came to power in Iraq as a result of the US invasion. As a result, Harvey's well-documented book contributes to understanding the limits of US power in the Middle East and the significant perceptual gaps that Middle Eastern states need to bridge to ensure that a regional détente is sustainable.

In her landmark new book Leaving Iberia: Islamic Law and Christian Conquest in North West Africa (Harvard UP, 2020), Jocelyn Hendrickson launches a searingly brilliant legal history centered on the question of how medieval and early modern Muslim jurists in Iberia and North Africa wrestled with various thorny questions of living under or migrating away from non-Muslim political sovereignty. This book combines meticulous social and political history with nimble and accessible readings of a vast range of sources from the Maliki School of law. What emerges from this exercise is a picture of the Maliki legal tradition in particular and Islamic law more broadly that is unavailable for predictable readings, enormously interesting, and deliciously complex. This lucid book should also be a delight to teach in various graduate and upper level under graduate courses. SherAli Tareen is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Franklin and Marshall College. His research focuses on Muslim intellectual traditions and debates in early modern and modern South Asia. His book Defending Muhammad in Modernity (University of Notre Dame Press, 2020) received the American Institute of Pakistan Studies 2020 Book Prize and was selected as a finalist for the 2021 American Academy of Religion Book Award. narrated by Chris Gratien featuring Wendell Marsh, Rabiat Akande, and Ann McDougall | From the 10th century onward, Islamic polities emerged in West Africa. Centered on the southern edge of the desert, these states built empires that benefited from the brisk Saharan trade. With time, they also built centers of Islamic learning as the wider population of West Africa began to embrace Islam. In this episode, we study what Islam meant for West Africa and what West Africa means for the history of Islam. We trace the evolution of Islamic polities in the region, which were built on the mineral wealth of salt and gold. Like other states of the period, they were also built on slavery and the slave trade. In our discussion, we focus on how the local tradition of Maliki jurisprudence engaged with the question of slavery, especially as the trade became increasingly racialized and global around the turn of the 17th century. « Click for More »
