The UK Prime Minister's chief of staff has quit her role, saying she “risked becoming a distraction”. Sue Gray was caught up in a conflict over pay, after the BBC revealed that her salary was higher than Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer's. UK Correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking that this is quite a remarkable decision. He said that in the last six to eight months, Starmer hasn't sacked anyone despite there being calls. Liddle says the howl within his own camp had become so grave that he could do nothing other than accept the resignation. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Conservatives annual conference in Birmingham – essentially one big job interview. By Wednesday afternoon the Conservatives should be a lot closer to knowing who their next leader will be. The selected candidates are Robert Jenrick, James Cleverly, Kemi Badenoch and Tom Tugendhat with Rishi Sunak as the leader. Tens of thousands of council homes sit empty as the waitlist grows. Rod Little told Heather du Plessis-Allan that today it was Tugendhat who seems to be one of the outsiders. Liddle states the general thinking is that this will come down to a final between Badenoch from the right and Jenrick from the centre left. Liddle believes that it's looking more like the conservative MPs will try to get rid of Badenoch before it gets to the final. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

*NEW SERIES* - Leadership: Pivot to Purpose Series, hosted by Peter Collins Welcome to the first episode of the series, "Purpose and Leadership," featuring Catherine Liddle, CEO of SNAICC, and Menzies Foundation Board Director. An Arrernte/Luritja woman from Central Australia, Catherine's mission is of rich tapestry that culminates in traditions of Indigenous storytelling, kinship, and community, all foundational pillars of leadership and resilience for over 60,000 years. “He had blue eyes.” This poignant memory, captures the lasting impression her grandfather had of the government official who took him away from his parents. Despite this painful history, Catherine has found a profound purpose inspired by Aristotle's concept of human flourishing, a dedication and contribution that is deeply seeded in ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children experience well-being and the full breadth of opportunities available in life. ______________________________________________________________________________________ In complexity, the anchor that ensures progress is made is the identification of a shared purpose, underpinned by the values and principles that enact that purpose. Often referred to as the ‘north star', purpose galvanises action, creates the imperative and provides the context to reconcile what matters most. It is the thing that shapes who and what we want to become. It is through this lens, the Leadership: Pivot to Purpose podcast series, hosted by Dr Peter Collins, will feature the perspectives of eight, multi-sector, influential figures, with each episode offering insights into how individuals navigate challenges and lead with courage, wisdom, and resilience. From personal anecdotes to practical insights, this series promise to engage, enlighten, and empower listeners to embrace purpose-driven leadership in their own lives. _______________________________________________________________________________________

The Tories are in for a restructure after their defeat in the UK election. Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has resigned as leader of the Conservative Party, saying in his speech that he has “heard your anger”. UK Correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking that nobodies looking forward to the Conservative Leadership election, as it will “usually be a b**** fest” and remind everyone of the people who used to run them. He said that Kemi Badenoch is currently out in front, with a strong showing from Tom Tugendhat, and Suella Braverman. Liddle told him that if there was a vote tomorrow, the right would win, but historically the person at the front of a Tory Leadership contest never actually wins. It was a punishing election for conservative and national parties across the UK. Overall, Labour gained 211 seats, giving them a firm majority in the House of Commons, leader Keir Starmer becoming the new Prime Minister. UK Correspondent Rod Liddle told Andrew Dickens that although Labour was elected with a massive majority, it's only just under 2% more than they got when Jeremy Corbyn was the leader of the party. He said that it's absolutely clear that nobody within the country wants Labour or the Tories to run the country, and he thinks they know that. Liddle said Labour knows they have a lot of winning over to do before they go into the next election, five years from now. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Polls are still suggesting a Labour victory ahead of this week's UK general election. Labour leader Keir Starmer remains the clear contender against Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party. UK Correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking that most polls are predicting a 240 majority for the Labour party. He thinks that this is underestimating both a shy Tory vote and those who do not wish to give Labour a carte blanche. Liddle suspects the majority will be smaller than predicted. Things are heating up as the UK moves closer to its general election. The election is generally a two-horse race between the two major parties, the Conservatives and Labour, but UK Correspondent Rod Liddle says nobody really seems to want either horse. He said that there's no great enthusiasm for Labour, with a poll saying that only 15% of the public are firmly in their camp, and there's certainly no appetite for the Tories anymore. Current PM Rishi Sunak has announced the reintroduction of mandatory military service should the Conservatives make it back into power. He said that he believes twelve months of service would help foster the “national spirit” that emerged during the pandemic. Liddle said that it seems to be a bizarre, out of the blue policy which a good many members of his own party have cheerfully derided. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The UK is walking a tightrope in their response to Iran's attack on Israel. More than 300 projectiles were launched on Israel by Iran in retaliation for a strike on its consulate in Syria two weeks ago. UK Correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking that the attack on Israel has bolstered them amongst their allies, Britain among them. However, he said, PM Rishi Sunak is hampered by having David Cameron in the Foreign Office, who's beliefs are antithetical to most of what is wanted by Israel. Liddle said that Sunak will continue to say that they support Israel, but will be mediated by his Foreign Secretary who says that Israel should do nothing more to try get rid of Hamas. There were 4,992 substantiated reports of child abuse and 60 deaths resulting from abuse in Pennsylvania during 2022. Child abuse in Pennsylvania is defined as when an individual acts or fails to prevent something that causes harm or a high likelihood of harm to a child under the age of 18. This harm can take many forms, such as bodily injury, serious mental injury, or sexual abuse or exploitation. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance provides education, support, and training programs to make Pennsylvania safe for children. Angela Liddle, the President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance was on The Spark Wednesday and was asked for reasons there are so many cases of child abuse and neglect,"People are struggling with substance use disorder, food insecurity. They're struggling to make ends meet with still an economy that's not quite where we'd like it to be. There's inadequate child care. So we have a lot of folks that aren't providing the supervision of their kids that are needed, and our kids are just needing a whole lot sometimes that they're not getting." Liddle was asked about trends they're seeing,"One of the trends that we're seeing, not fatality related, but near fatality. So we've had our numbers increase around the near fatality cases. And what that basically means is that had there not been intervention, we have a medical physician that has certified, the child would have died. So in all likelihood, it could have been a mandated reporter. It could have been a concerned community member who alerted the system that children, that the child was in danger and then got the necessary intervention. But those numbers are increasing, and about 80% of all of the near fatalities are because of a lack of parental supervision. So we have kids who are ingesting cleaning material or over-the-counter meds or prescription meds, drowning in swimming pools, getting into unsecured firearms, some very, very serious things." Liddle said sometimes parents need help and PFSA offers parental training programs as well. But what if someone suspects a child is being abused or neglected,"Anyone can report suspected child abuse. Community members can do so anonymously. They do not have to give their name or contact information. Mandated reporters, the professionals or volunteers who work with kids, bus drivers, teachers, doctors, dentists, nurses, athletic coaches those folks are required by law, and you don't have to be certain. You have to have a reasonable suspicion. That thing in your gut that says this child is not safe. And so what you do then is you pick up the phone and you dial Childline, which is the central registry. It's the hotline for reporting abuse. And that number is 1-800-932-0313." Digital technology, especially social media, has become an area that can put children in danger. Peer-to-peer online bullying is commonplace, but so are kids going on websites that isn't age appropriate for them. Children can be put in physical danger when adults reach out to kids online and sometimes even make arrangements to meet them, often to exploit them sexually. PFSA has initiated a Family Digital Wellness program. Liddle talked about keeping children safe online,"We have to build into our family culture strong assessments about what each kid needs and based on their age, development around social media and the digital world. Our own kind of family norms and rules. How many times do you go out to a restaurant and if there's a mom and dad and a two kids, you see all four of them sitting there with their smartphones, they're not even talking to each other? And that comes from parents modeling the behavior and allowing it. So your family digital plan might be we have strong parental controls for these kids. We have, time limits by when they can be on their iPad. And maybe it's only on the weekends or very limited through the week. We have a rule that we don't, none of us, take to the table when we're going to share a meal our phones. And then there's discussion about the whys. And you talk about how are we like so much to hear about your day. Tell us one thing you learned today, or what was your favorite part of the day? And you begin to talk to kids too, about at a young age about who they may encounter online. Not if, but who they may and what the response might be. What is a good response? And then you reinforce that and what you reinforce with. And this is some good old Fred Rogers talk here. There isn't anything you can't talk to me about. I'm always gonna love you no matter what. You're wonderful just the way you are. Mom or mom and dad or just dad want to keep you as safe as we possibly can. So it's a different day. We don't have a choice." To report suspected child abuse or neglect, call CHILDLINE at 1-800-932-0313.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pressure is being heaped on Israel after their airstrike killed seven aid workers in Gaza. UK Correspondent Rod Liddle says that the mood and temper in the UK is changing when it comes to Israel. Previously the support for Israel has been fairly steadfast, with the Labour Party leader refusing to be too critical of their refusal to demand ceasefires. However, Liddle told Mike Hosking, the attack has sparked anger even within the conservative government. He said that while they have been offered a profuse apology and Rishi Sunak has demanded an explanation from Netanyahu, they were told there won't be one due to an ongoing investigation. Rumours a coup is brewing in the UK Conservative Party likely hold little truth. In the last few days MP Penny Mordaunt has been at the centre of speculation that she's trying to oust the prime minister, after which she'll step into his place. UK Correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking that while there is disquiet within the Conservative Party's backbenches regarding Rishi Sunak's performance, a coup is unlikely. He said the Tories aren't used to the fact that its them the country hates, not just Sunak, his trust, or those who came before. People are sick of the conservatives, Liddle said.
