Ritch Shydner Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson - Part Deux Ritch Shydner could come back every week and we'd never run out of things to discuss, it would always be entertaining, and he'd always be funny. Co-host! There are no accidents. Losing his signal last week on the road in Georgia was a blessing. We got a Shydner double dip. This conversation with the standup comedian who holds the distinction of making a dozen appearances on Carson's Tonight Show, as well as numerous appearances on Letterman and Leno, had fabulous stories about the former and the latter, Sam Kinison, their 80s NY road trip before Sam's superstardom, and how their debauchery almost cost Ritch big time, Roseanne, who handed Ritch his segue from front of the camera to writer, Jeff Foxworthy, a natural after only a few weeks of standup, who created a new joke form, Bill Maher, and True Story, Mike Binder, and Miind of The Married Man, and Robert Klein who shared a most unlikely kinship… there were gems aplenty. But, it was Ritch's poignant, heartfelt recounting of his parents' 72-year marriage, his father's drinking, his mother's rolling pin, the silent years after graduating law school and choosing comedy, Ritch's redemption, and then getting sober, making amends, his father following suit on both, and the shift in their relationship for the 36 years that followed until just last month when his dad was transitioning this earthly world. Moving, beyond words… and, funny! I so enjoyed every word, every moment, with this self-aware, humble, wildly intelligent - emotionally as well as intellectually, ever-evolving, hysterically funny man. Do I need a reason to have a Part 3? Ritch Shydner Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson - Part Deux! Take a deep dive into the world of stand up comedy with a guy who's done the Tonight Show, with Johnny Carson, 14 times! He's a legend in the comedy world and a cool, humble dude. He's played every club in the country and is now traveling the circuit with his 1-man show about the history of stand up comedy. ABOUT RITCH Learn all there is to know about Ritch at RitchShydner.com Ritch's new book, Kicking Through The Ashes: My Life as a Stand-up in the 1980's Comedy Explosion, is OUT NOW!  Read a story from the book here.. (http://www.ritchshydner.com/ritch-shydner-news/7-kicking-through-the-ashes) In the 1980’s, Ritch made numerous appearances on TV, including Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. He did an HBO half-hour special, “One Night Stand.” He played Al Bundy’s co-worker on “Married with Children”, and made guest appearances on many other TV shows, such as “Designing Women” and “Roseanne.” Ritch was able to translate his modest success on TV into an obscure film career, appearing in Steve Martin’s, "Roxanne," and Eddie Murphy's, "Beverly Hills Cop II," before moving on to minor roles on smaller pictures. Ritch wrote for sitcoms such as "Roseanne", "The Jeff Foxworthy Show," and HBO’s “The Mind of the Married Man.” Ritch wrote material for Jeff Foxworthy’s Grammy nominated comedy albums, “Totally Committed,” and “Big Fun.” He also wrote for Ron White and Jay Leno. In 2006 Ritch was co-author of a book on stand-up, “I Killed.” Order "I Killed" here! Currently Ritch is writing a movie adaptation for HBO of Bill Maher's book, "True Story". Jay Leno: “And remember, Shydner, don’t tell anyone you wrote those jokes for me.” Jerry Seinfeld: “Ritch Shydner is a terrific comedy writer and definitely one of the good guys.” Jeff Foxworthy: "Ritch helped me write two albums, both of which were nominated for Grammys. I've always thought that he was one of the best stand-ups ever." Bill Maher: Back in the day, in the dingy ratskellers in which we learned our craft, Ritch Shydner was always the comic the other comics came into the room to watch, because he was the funniest. That hasn’t changed, and I’m afraid neither have the ratskellers. On today's show, a conversation with author and comedian Ritch Shydner. Ritch Shydner rode in on the wave of the 1980s stand up boom, playing stages coast-to-coast, working with the best comedians of the era along the way appearing on HBO, David Letterman, both Jay Leno and Johnny Carson's TONIGHT SHOW as well as working and writing on shows incl. ROSEANNE, MARRIED ...WITH CHILDREN, and THE JEFF FOXWORTHY SHOW. Shydner took time off from doing stand-up in the late 90s but has returned in recent years, I had the good fortune to see Ritch play the Borgota in Atlantic City a few weeks back where he took control of a crowded house and again delivered his lean compact set like the seasoned professional that he is. It's all in Shydner's recent memoir, “Kicking Through the Ashes: My Life As a Stand-Up in the 1980s Comedy Boom” on the Mr. Media imprint, a highly-readable book, where Shydner is witness to the birth of modern comedy while working with people of the stature of Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Martin, Robin Williams and Sam Kinison, as well as taking the stage on some of television's most-watched programs. But deeper down in the details there's a beautiful quiet desperation where struggles with economics, status, and chemical abuse, all led to a personal and professional collapse. Plus, there's jokes. I wanted to talk to Shydner about the book but I also wanted to talk about our shared past. We both grew up in the same small Southern New Jersey town, Pennsville, a town of about 14,000, historically tied to the county's DuPont chemical plant and later, The Salem Nuclear Power Plant. It's the kind of small town kids dream of escaping when growing up and Shydner's success was a sort of inspiration and source of local pride. Although I had never met Ritch before, I did attend kindergarten with his younger sister, Rhonda and I believe Ritch was friendly with my cousin Cheryl since high school. As I'd hoped, that Pennsville camaraderie kicked in right away, and we talked about Ritch's opening for the Ramones, working for Roseann Barr, taking bad advice from Sam Kinison making a lethal faux pas with Johnny Carson, his friendship with cult comic Bill Hicks, being competitive with his stand-up ex-wife, knowing who to make fun of, swimming in chemical waste and more.

Howdy, howdy, howdy! It’s your ol' friend and audio neighbor Marc Hershon, host and rootin', tootin’ cowpoke for Epi147 of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Roundup. Yee haw! This installment has nothing to do with cowboys, it's actually an episode of Succotash Chats, where we focus on interviews with soundcasters, comedians, soundcaster/comedians, and just plain ol’ showbiz folk. Although, come to think of it, once I get into this episode's conversation with our guest, it is like looking back on a kind of wild West. I recently wrote a review on Huffington Post of Kicking Through The Ashes, a memoir of sorts by comedian Ritch Shydner. And then a couple of weeks after that review hit, Ritch was playing nearby at Mill Valley’s Throckmorton Theatre on a Tuesday night. After the show was over, we tried to get a bite to eat but the sidewalks roll up pretty early this side of the Golden Gate Bridge so we went to his hotel and chatted it up there for a bit and that's what you're going to hear. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE We have a double dose of our Burst O' Durst segment with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst, a short visit to the Tweetsack to read your tweets and emails, and we're sponsored this episode by Henderson's Parka Pants. STUFF IRL I'm in the process of putting together April's Fools, a sort of comedy variety show on Saturday, April 1st, and the Throckmorton Theater in Mill Valley, CA. It will feature our own Will Durst, past guest Larry "Bubbles" Brown, Debi Durst, Dan Spencer, Al Clethen, and a few other surprises. We’ll have a bunch of comedian and funny people doing standup, improv, readings, music, and more. So if your around the area, be sure to check that out if you want some good laughs to kick off your April entertainment calendar. Kicking Through the Ashes: My Life As A Stand-up in the 1980s Comedy Boom" by Ritch Shydner. Order your copy today by clicking on the book cover above! Comedian Ritch Shydner made a career onstage painting pictures with words, so it should be no surprise that he transitioned easily to doing the same in book form. What might be surprising is that more comics haven’t told their stories in this way. RITCH SHYDNER podcast excerpt: "Rodney Dangerfield once said, 'Listen to what the audience is laughing at.' I tape myself not just to help structure the material and the jokes , but to find out what they find funny." Shydner’s tale, Kicking Through the Ashes: My Life as a Stand-up in the 1980s Comedy Boom – includes years of drug and alcohol abuse, women, and repeated attempts to earn his father’s respect – gives comedy fans an unprecedented look at his id and ego. We also get a front row seat at life on the road and the friends he made, including Jay Leno, David Letterman, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, Sam Kinson, Gilbert Gottfried, Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Hicks and many more. Speaking of behind the scenes, I must disclose I have an extra interest in Shydner’s book: it was published by Mr. Media Books, which is an extension of this podcast. Ritch and I have gotten to know each other this past year and I asked to read his manuscript. Being a comedy fan, I loved Kicking Through the Ashes and offered to publish it myself. If you love comedy, you gotta have this book in your life. RITCH SHYDNER podcast excerpt: "(My first wife, comedian Carol Leifer) and I were both very competitive. We met when I moved to New York in 1979, started dating in '80, and get married in '81. We were both insecure about our status and our careers, both trying to make a mark. The relationship was always, I think, secondary to our careers." Key interview moments: • 3:30 Comedian Ritch Shydner explains how the 1980s were a transformational moment for stand-up comedy; • 16:30 Rodney Dangerfield's advice to young comics; • 33:00 Among the more personal anecdotes in the book, Shydner talks about his competitive relationship with his first wife, comedian and ("Seinfeld" writer) Carol Leifer. Today's Guest: Ritch Shydner, comedian   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Ritch Shydner by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of career opening act comedians whose concept of “killing” is the only way they’re ever gonna middle… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Today’s interview with comedian Ritch Shydner is unusual for at least three reasons. First of all, Shydner is the first guest of my 10th year of producing the Mr. Media podcast. Second, he may be the first guest I’ve ever connected with as a Facebook friend first and then invited to be a guest on the show. RITCH SHYDNER podcast excerpt: "It's 1977. Friends of mine have bar bands . When they t breaks, I jumped on stage and did comedy. It was all kamikaze stuff. One night, a bar owner came over and said, 'You want to open for a band next week? I'll give $50.' I was excited; I gotta do this. Next week came, I realized I didn't even know who the band was. Outside, on the marquee, it said, 'From New York City, THE RAMONES.' I walked in, the place was packed with punks. I didn't know what punk was yet. But there were mohawks, shaved heads, flannel and leather. I went back to the bar and the owner was laughing, 'They're gonna kill you, man! You're not gonna make 15 minutes!' But to me, it was like a rodeo event: I'm gonna stay on no matter what the bull did! The owner said, 'I'll go double or nothin'--you won't make five minutes!' I said, 'I'll take it,' and he introduced me. I don't know what he said, but all the audience heard was, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, NOT The Ramones!' I had to walk through the crowd to get to the stage and it was biblical. They were spitting', throwing' stuff, booing me. The whole crowd hated me before I got on stage! I'd only been doing comedy a couple of months--I didn't know what to do. It's not like I could do my special punk material that I wrote the night before. I said 'I'm from New Jersey,' and they were booing! One of the guys sitting ringside had had it and he shot this mug of beer at me. I shook it off, but they they all started throwing beers! My friend said later that every time they hit me with a beer, they'd cheer. And every time I started talking again, they'd boo! Offstage, the bar owner is waving the $100, saying, 'Come get your money!' I went back to the kitchen, which was behind the bar. The Ramones were standing there--long hair, leather, guitars--waiting to go on. I am soaked, head-to-tie, with beer. And one of The Ramones goes, 'Cool act, man.'" You can LISTEN to this interview with comedian RITCH SHYDNER by clicking the audio player above! And third, he may be the least self-promotional comic I’ve ever encountered. How’s that, you wonder? Well, when I asked him if he had anything special coming up that he wanted to promote, he mentioned performing at the Borgata in Atlantic City from January 24 to 30. Anything else, I asked? “I’ll be at Cleveland Hilarities Feb. 3-6,” he replied. RITCH SHYDNER podcast excerpt: "A podcast is, when you're not really in show business, it's good make-believe that you're in show business. I've seen guys post, 'I'm gonna go tape a show today.' I go, 'What show?' 'It's a podcast.' 'That's not a show!' Podcasting is like a comedic circle jerk. 'You come on my show; I'll go on your show, we'll make believe we're in show business.'" Which left me thinking, Is this the only comedian in America not hosting his own podcast? As it turns out, the modest Mr. Shydner has two big projects on the verge of release. First is a memoir, Kicking Through The Ashes: My Life as a Stand-up in the 1980's Comedy Explosion, due out soon. And he also wrote a short film, The Last Lift of the Leg, which he screened with a live audience for the first time at the Tribeca Theater in New York City on January 31.

Comedian Ritch Shydner isn't exactly just a comedian. Yes, he's appeared on The Tonight Show, Letterman and Leno a bunch of times. Sure, he's had HBO specials. Yep, he played Al Bundy's coworker on Married With Children. And of course he's been a working comic for decades. But there's a bunch of other stuff: writing gigs on Roseanne, Titus and The Jeff Foxworthy Show. A book on comedy. And the you-need-to-go-watch-right now documentary I Am Comic where he's the star and folks like Sarah Silverman, Nick Kroll, Jeff Foxworthy, Roseanne and Margaret Cho have cameos. And now for the substance abuse stuff: Shydner boozed it up for years, dabbling in drugs too, and only stopped when he saw that all the drinking and drugging was sabotaging his comedy career. He got that career back but then, years into sobriety, decided to give up the stage so he wouldn't have to always be on the road away from his family. I Am Comic focuses on his decision to get back on the comedy circuit—a decision that allowed him to get off the meds he'd been on for a decade-and-a-half. In this episode, he and AfterParty's Anna David discuss how cops used to drive you to concerts instead of arresting you for drunk driving, the best way to perform for a Rasta audience (hint: smoke out and then just laugh on stage) and getting heckled by Sean Penn, among other topics.
