*Special Episode* Shavuot 5785 This week's episode of the One Pasuk Podcast is generously sponsored by Erica & Robert Klein, my mother and father in law in commemoration of the yahrzeit of their precious granddaughter, Chana Tova, daughter of Rabbi Chaim and Shoshana Poupko. She was a bright shining burst of light, who taught us all that the quality of our time on this earth is not dependent upon its length. Her spirit, smile, and courage will always be remembered by us. We pray that Hashem continue to watch over her Neshama. It's a simple plan this week: We're just looking at what was on television in late May of 1981. Including: A bizarre Happy Days musical, a horrifying Waltons episode, Mork in a bubble, skydiving Hulk, something called "Women Who Rate a 10," Bo Duke with amnesia, Daisy Duke on Enos, Batman on Fantasy Island, a Muppet on a medical drama, a dead parrot at Mel's Diner, and way too many variety shows (from Bob Hope, Steve Allen, Robert Klein, the Gatlin Brothers, and the Mandrell Sisters). It all sounds wonderful, doesn't it? You should probably cancel Netflix and invest in a time machine. The Mayor of Chickentown on The Doctor's Beard podcast! And our regular links... TVC 676.5: Jeffrey Sitcov, founder and president of Doors of Change, and Lucie Arnaz, one of the celebrity spokespeople for Doors of Change, talk to Ed about the annual Concert of Hope that will benefit Doors of Change, and which is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 6 in San Diego. Also in this segment: Lucie shares a few memories of working with Neil Simon, Marlin Hamlisch, Carole Bayer Sager, and Robert Klein in the original Broadway production of They're Playing Our Song. Welcome to #FANuary, where we talk about the movies you, the listener, asked us to discuss. Our first entry in #FANuary is 1987's TAX ATTACK 87, a Learning Corporation of America production staring comedian Robert Klein (SNL). Learning Corporation of America was owned by New World Pictures and focused on educational videos like In the FOR SAFETY'S SAKE: IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD starring Gary Coleman. By the way, if you haven't listened to our episode on that video, do yourself a favor and check it out. TAX ATTACK 87 is meant to be an instructional video for how to complete your annual taxes using the new laws that were introduced in 1986. It's equal parts educational video and live action children's board game. Given that children don't file taxes and adults don't typically need board games to learn, it's anyone's guess who the target audience is for this little slice of New World Pictures americana. We leave no stone unturned looking for deductions and credits in TAX ATTACK 87. Why is Robert Klein arguing with a off-screen IRS agent? Ryan has a solid theory. Erica gets immediately bored when Marc explains how to play craps. Ryan shares a story about going to comedy traffic school with his mom. Erica sings a banger of an opening song. Both Ryan and Marc share familial memories of watching the America's Cup when it was held in San Diego. This, of course, bores Erica even more. We even make a sneaky Twin Peaks reference even though we couldn't have anticipated the passing of David Lynch (RIP) only a couple days after the recording. Seriously though, Dune is one of Marc's favorite movies and he thinks its way better than the Denis Villenueve version.

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick takes a look back at the legendary Olympia Diner sketches from the early days of *Saturday Night Live*. These classics are known for their memorable characters, the bustling diner atmosphere, the functioning flattop grill (LIVE on stage!), and of course, the catchphrases like “Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger…no Coke, Pepsi…no fries, chips!” This popular recurring sketch was performed a record six times in less than 15 months, between January 1978 and May 1979. Every member of The Not Ready For Prime-Time Players, along with hosts like Robert Klein, Buck Henry, Jill Clayburgh, and even The Rolling Stones, appeared in these iconic scenes. In this episode, you'll hear three of the Olympia Diner bits (including the very first one) and learn about the somewhat conflicted history behind them. Was the inspiration Chicago's Billy Goat Tavern, John Belushi's family diner, or a mix of both? Nick also explores how these sketches inspired future SNL classics like "You lika the juice??" Get ready to laugh a lot and, by the end, probably crave a cheeseburger! [Ep92]
A Wide-Open Conversation with Robert Klein and Joe AltermanAward-winning comedian Robert Klein grew up in a Jewish family living in the Bronx surrounded by music. While studying at Yale's School of Drama, he auditioned for Chicago's famed improvisational troupe Second City. In 1975, Klein was the first comedian to appear in a live concert on HBO where his set included a bit about antisemitism. Join Klein for a wide-open conversation about his childhood; his thoughts on the history of the Jewish people, antisemitism, the Holocaust, and Israel; his decades-long career as a performer; as well as the connection between music and comedy, including some of Klein's “harmonica shtick.” In conversation with Joe Alterman, executive director of Neranenah. This program is part of The Pulse: Moments That Matter, a series of frank conversations on culturally relevant topics with musicians, comedians and other entertainment industry professionals to illuminate how being Jewish has shaped their experiences, both personally and professionally. Ritch Shydner Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson - Part Deux Ritch Shydner could come back every week and we'd never run out of things to discuss, it would always be entertaining, and he'd always be funny. Co-host! There are no accidents. Losing his signal last week on the road in Georgia was a blessing. We got a Shydner double dip. This conversation with the standup comedian who holds the distinction of making a dozen appearances on Carson's Tonight Show, as well as numerous appearances on Letterman and Leno, had fabulous stories about the former and the latter, Sam Kinison, their 80s NY road trip before Sam's superstardom, and how their debauchery almost cost Ritch big time, Roseanne, who handed Ritch his segue from front of the camera to writer, Jeff Foxworthy, a natural after only a few weeks of standup, who created a new joke form, Bill Maher, and True Story, Mike Binder, and Miind of The Married Man, and Robert Klein who shared a most unlikely kinship… there were gems aplenty. But, it was Ritch's poignant, heartfelt recounting of his parents' 72-year marriage, his father's drinking, his mother's rolling pin, the silent years after graduating law school and choosing comedy, Ritch's redemption, and then getting sober, making amends, his father following suit on both, and the shift in their relationship for the 36 years that followed until just last month when his dad was transitioning this earthly world. Moving, beyond words… and, funny! I so enjoyed every word, every moment, with this self-aware, humble, wildly intelligent - emotionally as well as intellectually, ever-evolving, hysterically funny man. Do I need a reason to have a Part 3? Ritch Shydner Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson - Part Deux! This week- a pair of films starring the late French icon Alain Delon. Tom Ripley has been sent to Italy to retrieve Phillippe Greenleaf, son of a wealth San Francisco family. Phillippe has no intention of returning home, especially if it means leaving behind his fiancée, Marge. He soon grows cruel and abusive to the always fawning Tom. But Tom Ripley has ideas and plans of his own. The first film adaption of the original book Patricia Highsmith's classic novel series, Purple Noon (original title: Plein soleil). A Gentile art dealer in Vichy France is mistaken from a Jewish man with the same name. Robert Klein's wealthy and secure life is thrown into a paranoid mystery as he tries desperately to both satisfy the authorities on his identity and find who put him in this position to begin with. A Kafkaesque film about obsession and identity, Monsieur Klein. All that and Kevin is summoned with digital necromancy, Dave sees the bright lights big city, and Tyler sharpens his tongue for next week. Join us, won't you? Episode 375- Ice-Cold Angel
And we're back with yet another installment of our award winning segment ...And We're Back! where we take a deep dive into an SNL recurring character and watch all their appearances. This week we watched one of the earliest SNL recurring characters, that's right, Ben gets introduced to King Ploobis, Scred, Puuta, Vosh and the rest of The Land Of Gorch an early segment on the show featuring Jim Henson's Muppets. Back in 1975, a counter culture variety show decided to include a live puppet segment and the result was something nobody wanted. The writers hated it, the audience was befuddled, and you can quickly see the resentment held by all involved. We watched almost every appearance, as we've previously established we can tap out whenever we want but this time we skipped some from the middle so we could watch their sad, dour, but in some ways beautiful ending. SERIES 2 EPISODE 121: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) Apparently having not done enough of the bidding of the creature who appointed him, Trump stooge and corrupt Special Counsel Robert Hur is negotiating with two House Committees to testify and/or provide transcripts of his interview with the president before the end of the month. If Merrick Garland will not invoke DOJ rules to prevent this, Biden must fire Garland and replace him with an Attorney General with an actual spine. And NBC and ABC need to fire everybody involved in the scandals at Meet The Press and This Week, in which the conclusion so obvious even Hur had to report it - that there was no evidence Biden willfully retained or shared classified documents - was reversed and both Kristen Welker and Jon Karl reported that Hur HAD found such evidence. It was the same as taking the verdict "NOT GUILTY" and reporting it as "...GUILTY" Welker and Karl and the producers and executives above them must be fired. And having had the editorializing door cracked open for them by Hur's willingness to assess Biden's memory even though he's not only not a neurologist, he's barely a lawyer, the media is running with the idea that, as Politico put it, Hur may have forced the Democrats' hand to switch to a "Plan B" instead of Biden. "Plan B" assumes a lot of things: like Trump won't seize upon it, like Biden would agree to it, like there IS a perfect alternative, like everybody else who isn't the chosen perfect alternative is going to NOT try to take the nomination anyway, like there has been any evidence of Biden failing at any actual task or presidential function - and most importantly like there's any other candidate who would actually BE a better candidate than Joe Biden - no matter his real, imagined, or As-Seen-On-ABC-and-NBC flaws. I'll War-Game the possible outcomes. They're ALL worse than leaving things as is. B-Block (32:45) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Trump beats the SCOTUS deadline and is still beating the "Presidential Immunity" dead horse. It is increasingly clear the DOJ will have to move to take the Florida documents case away from Judge Cannon. And the plan is out of the bag: Trump will again service Putin - his plan is to cut off Ukraine funding on January 20 of next year. C-Block (38:10) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Part of the Plan B disaster creeped into my consciousness when a friend of four decades' duration went on the Bill Maher SleazeWeasel Show and declared that if Biden won't stand aside he must be pushed. This is all too much for me. Twice I had my chance to push Maher and I blew it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Following the dreams of her best friend who moved to New York City to play guitar for John Lennon, Sandra Furton Gabriel, she discovered that she loved having that All Access pass that got you backstage, but she didn't want to be an entertainer. Starting out doing odd jobs, she soon found herself interning at Rogers & Cowan, the internationally recognized public relations firm. Although that job didn't pan out, she wound up transcribing tapes for Sam Merrill, who was doing interviews for Playboy Magazine. That in turn led to a gig with D.I.R. Broadcasting, where she was hired to book talent for comedian Robert Klein's radio show, and the rest is history. Sandra soon found herself becoming the producer for a newly developed TV show with a young comedian by the name of David Letterman. Now it was only a matter of booking guests for the show. It sounds easier than it was, but needless to say that the role was full of challenges including guests who didn't know who David was (actor Peter O'Toole had no idea who Letterman was), those that didn't show up at all (drummer Levon Helm of “The Band” fame), and actor Bill Murray (the very first guest on “Late Night With David Letterman”) who wandered off the set before taping, who finally arrived in the studio just as he was being announced. After leaving Letterman, she went on to produce “The Joan Rivers Show” up until Joan started her home shopping show. Sandra went on to create a daytime talk show pilot tentatively titled “Girlfriends”, featuring women of different views, cultures, and ethnicities, and pitched it to ABC Television. Unfortunately the show didn't get picked up, but in Sandra's words, “The View” came out of her proposal, although she was left out of the production. She went on to file a lawsuit against ABC and Barbara Walters, but lost in the end. Picking herself up, and dusting herself off, she went on to work with actress, producer, and syndicated daytime talk show Rolanda Watts. Sandra Furton Gabriel has worked with such legends as Robin Williams, Stevie Winwood, Ringo Starr, William Shatner, Kenny Loggins, Rodney Dangerfield, Michael J. Fox, along with Stevie Nicks and Art Garfunkel. © 2023 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy.
