Ritch Shydner Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Well, that was a first! On the road with Ronna and Ritch Shydner as they traveled from Florida back home to North Carolina. Literally, in the car, in the fading light, in rural Georgia, with intermittent signal. It was as much a surprise to me as to you! Kinda like doing an interview in a disco with strobe lights. Trooper Ritch didn't want to cancel even though he was in the midst of family tragedy, having very recently lost his dad, and was out of state with his mom to help. I knew all that, the driving adventure, not so much. Please forgive the challenges and appreciate the funny that Ritch is even in the midst of this! We talked the swing states as they drove through one, the DNC, new hope, sugar addiction, intermittent dieting, the no-matter-what club for drinking and drugging that just doesn't work with salt and sweets. Ritch's very early standup days, whilst in law school, getting the degree but opting out, what joy for his parents! Trying LA, choosing NY, the crowd he came up with, the clubs he came up in, in the stand-up 80s heyday, meeting Carol, doing his first Carson, still high, hitting bottom, a Mark who saved him, and then we lost him, again literally, just when we were about to hear a GREAT story… so… there will be a Part 2, for sure! Safe travels, you two. Heartfelt condolences. Thanks for being willing. Next time Ritch will be sitting still in a well-lit room where we can see his whole handsome face. Sendng love. Apologies to all who hung in and those who din't… we'll make it up to you! Most remarkable… even with all of this- Ritch was still HYSTERICAL! Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm your host, James Navé. Last Sunday, I had the pleasure of brunching with the talented Ritch Shydner at the Loott House Café in Swannanoa, NC. I only learned later that I was sitting across from a comedy legend who's graced the stages of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Late Night with David Letterman, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, not just once but multiple times. Influenced by giants like Art Carney, Lenny Bruce, Red Skelton, and George Carlin, Ritch's style and delivery are testaments to the greats who paved the way in comedy. In our show today, he'll share his journey, the highs and lows, and what it truly takes to make a career in stand-up comedy. So, if you're curious about comedians' lives, the intricacies of stand-up, and what makes Ritch Shydner an important figure in the comedic world, tune in. This episode of Stand Up Comedy Is Serious Business is not just a lesson in laughter but a deep dive into the heart and soul of comedy itself.

Ritch Shydner is the absolute best of the best. Incredibly funny, giving, and a wealth of wisdom and stories from a lifetime on the road and in show business as an actor and writer. His documentary “I Am Comic” is one of the best documentaries on comedy I've ever seen and his book “I Killed” will actually put you in the time and place of the worlds best comics as they talk about their stories from the road. We cover a lot in an hour but we'll def have him back for more. Enjoy!
Conversation #186, recorded on October 18, 2021. Ritch Shydner has a long history in the stand-up comedy game, appearing on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show and the early days of David Letterman. He's gone on to be a prolific comedy writer, working with Jeff Foxworthy, Jay Leno, Bill Maher, Roseanne and even Norm MacDonald. His return to stand-up was charted in the 2010 documentary I AM COMIC, and he helped compile great stories of the road in the essential comedy text I KILLED. Now he's putting his mind for comedy history to good use with his new one-man show A HISTORY OF STAND-UP COMEDY FROM THE CIVIL WAR TO TODAY: 160 Years of Standup in 90 Minutes. This one-of-a-kind crash course in comedy is a link to the past of the an art form that has never been popular and somehow not often understood. He's got shows at Yard Theatre on Melrose in LA on Oct 21 and 22, and will be booking more events across the country in late 2021. Hail Satire! is hosted and produced by Vic Shuttee. Further credits at hailsatire.com - Big thanks to Robert Price for our original theme music, Pin Lim for photography and Brendon Duran for the Hail Satire! logo design.

Regardless of the innumerable technical challenges, this was one of my favorite shows in 4 yrs. Comedian, @RitchShydner is affable, warm, hysterically funny, evolved, intelligent & downright entertaining as fuck. #GameChangersWithVickiAbelson Replay: https://bit.ly/3tIukSi Grateful! Regardless of the innumerable technical challenges with the new Zoom interface, presenting to Only Me on the Facebook, thrice, despite being posted Public, the absence of notifications, the ridiculous beginning when we did finally just go for it anyway, this was one of my favorite shows in 4 yrs. Comedian, Ritch Shydner is affable, warm, hysterically funny, evolved, intelligent, and downright entertaining as (I'll take Seinfeld's advice and not go blue) all get out (ugh). Ritch exceeded all expectations, and, knowing him, mine were high. BAM! He took the stresses of the day and washed them the fuck away. Ooops. We talked love and marriage, third time's the charm, addiction alcoholism, sugar blues, using the funny to cope, sitting down to law school, standing up, for the life he loves. Art Carney, Red Skelton. Robert Klein, George Carlin,.Richard Pryor, Carson, Leno, beforementioned Seinfeld, came up a deserving lot, Larry David Larry Miller. Bill Maher, Carol Liefer, Kathleen Wilhoite, Paul Reiser, Jeff Foxworthy, Roseanne, Don Rickles, Rodney Dangerfield, Sam Kinison, Bob Nelson, The Ramones, Married With Children, The Idolmaker, I Killed, Kicking the Ashes (or Holes if you’re a lame host), and Artemus Ward, the first standup comic, and his wife, the first American sex symbol. Fun, all! I can think of no better cure for the pandemic blues… hours later I’m still high, and I’m sober. Ritch is happy sauce, no sugar, no guilt, no booze. All of my thumbs WAY up. If you’re a comic, you most likely own a copy of “I Killed: True Stories of the Road from America’s Top Comics,” a book of short stories compiled by comedy legend Ritch Shydner. Over a 30-year career, Ritch has seen it all and done it all. We met after I read (and loved) his second book, “Kicking Through the Ashes.” We discuss his books, doing comedy at a time when it wasn’t even called “stand-up” yet, the comedy boom of the 80s, open-mics to being on Carson, and hanging with Dangerfield.Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos, and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura, and Dan Cummins. Lauren LoGiudice creates comedy through deeply flawed and painfully idiosyncratic characters. She has embodied some of the world’s most mysterious cultural icons and her work has been featured by The New York Times, the BBC and many others. In this episode we chat about how to make it as a comedian, how to market yourself online and how she wrote her new book: Inside Melania: What I Learned About Melania Trump by Impersonating Her. Probably my favorite review is by Ritch Shydner: “...Lauren masterfully used Satire, parody and irony to process the Slovenian Ice Queen” Listeners of this podcast can get the first 3 chapters of her audiobook free by visiting www.laurenlogi.com/empire

His television credits include EVENING AT THE IMPROV, SHOWTIME, MTV, COMEDY CENTRAL, FOX, and TNN. In the mid-nineties he created and produced the television show TNN'S COMEDY ROUND UP. He has written for some of the top comics in the country, including Jay Leno, Bill Hicks, Ritch Shydner, and Craig Shoemaker For many years Tony owned his own comedy club and talent booking agency. An expert in the field of one person shows, he directed Ritch Shyder's THE ADVENTURES OF CANYON MAN and was the creative consultant on Comedian of the Year Craig Shoemaker's sold out one man show WHOSE YOUR DADDY. Tony's workshops have taken people all the way from a Free Intro Class to national television. Former students and alumni have appeared on Last Comic Standing, The Jimmy Kimmel Show, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, episodic television, and commercials. Our alumni also excel in the field of dramatic acting. Most notably we are proud of Josh McDermitt. For several years he has portrayed Eugene on AMC's The Walking Dead. When asked what makes him different from most stand up comedy teachers, Tony said, “I guess the fact that I learned how to teach what I know how to do. A lot of people know how to do something, but don't know how to teach it. Like when my Dad taught me how to drive. He knew how to do it, but I don't think he knew how to teach it! That probably explains all of my accidents and speeding tickets! I just hope I can help people avoid the car wrecks that come with learning our craft. Bill Maher: Back in the day, in the dingy ratskellers in which we learned our craft, Ritch Shydner was always the comic the other comics came into the room to watch, because he was the funniest. Legendary comedian Ritch Shydner is known to my fans as the true heart and soul of "I Am Comic" (Available on iTunes). To three generations of stand-up comics, he remains a powerhouse of pure monology. Ritch and I met in the 1980's during the comedy boom when I opened for him. Neither of us remember the details or the city. We talk stand-up comedy, the road, doing a documentary together, today's podcast circuit, working with comedians, and his book. "Kicking Through The Ashes" is a great read, especially for the comedy aficionado with ADHD. I love it and you need to buy it here. Please share. There are a few key comedians Kira credits with inspiring and reinforcing her desire to pursue stand up comedy. 1) The first time she saw Mork from Ork sit on his couch using his head 2) The first time she snuck into a movie theater to see Eddie Murphy's Raw. 3) The first time she lied about her age and illegally a headliner at a real comedy club. Afterwards he came over and talked to her and the other 15 year olds she dragged down to Cobb's Comedy Club that night. That comedian was Ritch Shydner. Now, over two decades later Kira gets to gush all over him again. They discuss drugs, diapers and he even tries to talk her out of having another kid. He's appeared on The Tonight Show with both Johnny and Jay. He recurred on Married With Children and Roseanne. And more importantly, he's a father to three very lucky kids.
