In this episode of "Unlocking Your World of Creativity," host Mark Stinson discusses the power of music, learning, and creativity with guest Dan Spencer, author of "The 14 Unshakable Laws of Learning Music: How to Master Any Instrument and Singing in Five Minutes a Day." Dan Spencer on the main factors for improvement:Dan emphasizes the importance of consistent practice and dedication in any creative endeavor, comparing it to improving at video games, running, or playing a musical instrument. He introduces the idea of the "14 Unshakable Laws" as guidelines to overcome common challenges and pitfalls faced during the learning process."If you follow the 14 laws of learning music, and these are unshakable laws that apply to everyone, it does not matter if you are literally the least talented person in the world. If you have negative talent, if you're walking around with negative talent, if you follow the 14 unshakable laws, you'll be able to get better at music."* Dan Spencer discusses the impact of age on learning:Dan shares insights on the impact of age on learning, emphasizing that it's never too late to start learning music. He discusses a study showing that cognitive abilities can be restored to the level of 30-year-olds with focused learning, even in later stages of life."It really is never too late. For most people who want to get better at playing instruments and singing, the goal sounds something like, 'I want to sing my favorite songs and play guitar. I want to write my own songs.' Goals like this don't require decades of study."* Dan Spencer on the process of writing his book:Dan explains how he began organizing the "14 Unshakable Laws" by surveying 300 self-taught musicians and analyzing the common issues they faced. He shares that his motivation to write the book came from wanting to address the challenges people encounter when trying to teach themselves music."I wanted to create something that was going to directly address every single problem that you might face when you're trying to teach yourself, and how we can solve every single one of those problems."* Dan's perspective on the universal nature of creativity:Mark and Dan discuss the motivations behind creative pursuits, and Dan reflects on how creativity is deeply ingrained in human nature. He emphasizes that everyone is a creative being and that the act of creating and sharing is an integral part of our lives."Everyone creates everything. Communication is you being creative with someone. So everyone's creating all the time."* Dan's hope for readers of his book:Dan expresses his desire for readers to take away the message that anyone can create and learn music. He encourages everyone to discover the joy and fulfillment in expressing their creativity and developing their musical skills. Born and raised in Smyrna, TN, the states largest town as of 2020's census, Spencer grew up with a younger brother and two very supportive parents. A teen in mid 2000's Nashville, Spencer was influenced by the explosive hardcore scene that was sweeping across America at the time. With bands that occupied the local community and headlining festivals such as Van's Warped Tour, it was here that he realized something special was happening all around him. His influences stretched across an ever-changing horizon that consisted of punk, folk, rock n' roll, hip-hop and many others. I first met Dan around 2014, immediatlely hitting it off, he would soon meet all the locals in our area shortly after forming the great Pumpkinseed, an incredible collective consisting of Nashville/Cookeville based muscians/artists. With alot of changes in life and tides beginto change, Spencer has once again found himself in a very unique place as he's recently joined the Post Malone camp. Something he's still trying to fathom, but feeling blessed and thankful for. Raul and I were connected by my former co-worker, Dan Spencer, owner of Filthy Pirate Coffee. As soon as I met Raul, I knew two things: 1) I definitely want him on the show, 2) I bring him my business and recommend him for anyone needing screen printing. He started Del Designs (Find him on Instagram) several years before retiring from US CBP and he does great work, but more importantly his story of being a first generation US citizen, joining the Marine Corps and then Border Patrol is a story I believe many of you can relate to, and he also has some great tales from his experiences over the years.Give him a warm welcome to the squad and be safe out there!

Wow!  In this episode we catch up with Dan Spencer.  After serving 4 years in the marine corps, Dan served 20 years on an Arizona police department.  He served on SWAT, under cover auto theft, patrol supervisor and more.  His stories are incredible! He tells a "flash bang gone wrong" story.  Then there's the story of breaching a door to find 268 eyeballs staring back at him.  And of course we have dumb criminal stories including one involving illegal aliens and a murder suspect that talked too much. Dan now spends his time making great coffee at his new venture Filthy Pirate Coffee.  Check them out here.  https://filthypirate.coffee/ He also has his own podcast.  Check it out at https://open.spotify.com/show/7Dbqe5zRKqux4zfeRpfGEw?si=0932a486193d493b   Be sure to support this show's sponsor: Eric Buchanan & Associates - https://www.buchanandisability.com/   If you'd like to be a sponsor, email us at 91what.podcast@gmail.com

He says the lobbying effort they put in should be a blue print for other communities faced with the phase out of old power stations. His submissions to the Senate and the alarm bells he rings for state health departments is exhilarating to hear about.   Dan Spencer  DAN SPENCER was on the AYCC march from Port Augusta to Adelaide.  He tells us about the logistics of community organising and the pleasure that can be had from nudging the  transition to clean energy forward.  The climate is mutating but the Australian Youth Coalition is fighting back with education and mobilisation.   Daniel Thompson DANIEL THOMPSON represents SOLAR RESERVE.  They are building a new 24 hour solar plant using heliostats and a tower filled with molten salt. Vivien asks him to describe this project, which surely will become a tourist mecca. It will not replace all the power previously produced  but listeners will be happy to hear that there are  more plants in the offing.   Sam Johnson SAM JOHNSON is the Mayor of Port Augusta.  There is a colourful portrait of the late Mayor Joy Baluch in his office and he says ministers trembled to meet her,  so fierce was her opposition to the power station. He talks about joining forces with  the mayors of other sparcely populated  towns.  They intend to be the Renewable Energy Hub for Australia.  With 11 projects in the pipeline and the Green Steel proposed at Whyalla, they are leading the way.  Thanks  to Michael Lord BZE and Martin Zavan  Greenpeace who briefed Vivien.Thank you to all the speakers who made her so welcome. "Biomimicry is thinking about design that's inspired by nature. Since the industrial revolution, humans have been relying on fossil fuel technologies requiring heat, beat, and treat methods. Meaning, in order to support new technologies and get our new devices and materials, we subject products to very high temperatures, pressure, and often times, toxic chemicals, all of which consume unsustainable amounts of energy . The genius of life is that nature is able to design all the things it needs to survive and thrive within the constraints of the ambient atmosphere and environment. Using biomimicry to rethink our energy needs and develop technology is a way to address the climate crisis." Dan Spencer is Professor of Environmental Studies and has taught at The University of Montana since 2002. Some of his areas of teaching and research interest include ecological ethics, ethical issues in ecological restoration, and globalization, justice, and environmental issues in Latin America and Southeast Asia. Yes, friend, it’s me, Marc Hershon, your host and freestanding lamppost for Epi149 of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Just one more installment before we hit episode 150, which is likely to coincide with our 6th year of quality soundcasting. This is an episode of Succotash Clips, coming at you the way this show started way back when, by featuring a gaggle of comedy soundcast clips. This episode we're featuring clips from Changes In Latitude, Knight & Day, That's Deep Bro, Dumb People Town, The Anti Social Show, The Nerd Blitz, The Story Worthy Podcast, Good One, and the Just In TIme podcast…sort of. Also coming up this show we have a double dose of our Burst O' Durst, featuring political comedian and social commentator Will Durst. And the whole kit n' kaboodle is brought to you this episode by Henderson's Pressure Cooker Pants. REVIEW REVUE Normally I’m begging you to help us to spread the word with a 5-star rating and a short blurb about wonderful the show is and how it made you a better person. But we just got a couple of fresh ones in so I thought I’d give you a break and, instead, thank these folks and let you hear what they had to say, sort of as an example of how easy this process is. The first one is from our old friend Sabrina Miller, host of the Changes In Latitude soundcast. Back when Succotash started in 2011, she was Charley Miller with a show called The Random Variety Show, and he told me that listening to this show was one of the things that got him into becoming a soundcaster himself. Here’s what she had to say after plunking down 5 stars: “Marc, Joe, Kenny and Bill are unsung heroes in the podcast world. If you're not listing to this podcast, then just go home. One of the things I love about this show is that every episode has something familiar (Marc, Bill and Henderson’s Pants) and then has something different (all the comedy clips) I still love this show even after it reached 100 episodes! Keep up the great work Succotash!" We also received this short and sweet tribute from a fun comedy narrative story of a soundcast I’ve mentioned on Splitsider.com before but we’ve not yet featured here on the show called Knight & Day. The producer, Bill Franmeister, gave us 5 stars and wrote “Great podcast from top podders. Keep up the good work!" A UPCOMING LIVE APPEARANCE I’m producing and appearing in a live show on Saturday night, April 1st. It’s the April’s Fools Show at the 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, California. It’s going to be stand-up, sketch, and improv comedy, along with some spoken word performance and even some fool-based music! We have a great lineup, with Geoff Bolt, Larry “Bubbles” Brown, Al Clethen, Debi Durst, Michael Meehan, Judy Nihei, Michael O’Brien, and Dan Spencer, along with Musical Director Dave Coldren. It all starts at 8 PM and tickets are $15-25 dollars, depending on whether you want reserved seats or not. For more info and details, click on over to http://ThrockmortonTheatre.org THE CLIPS Changes In LatitudesThis is a few minutes from last October, Epi108, which marked Sabrina Miller’s second year with the show. This clip is where Sabrina was talking about having gone back to start listening to her own show from the beginning… Knight & DayI’m not sure if this show by Bill Franmeister even has it’s own homesite. You can find it on iTunes and it links to SoundCloud. And I know its on the Laughable app. The first season is only six episodes, which just wrapped in February. I’m not sure if, or when, Knight & Day will be back. (But thanks for the review, guys!) That’s Deep BroChristina Pazsitsky. If her name is familiar, she’s a comedian and she’s also the wife of another comedian, Tom Segura, and together they host another soundcast called Your Mom’s House. This clip is from That’s Deep Bro Epi106, entitled “Why Do I Keep Doing Things I Hate?” To catch more of That’s Deep Bro, you can find Christina all over the place – the Laughable app, itunes, SoundCloud, GooglePlay and wherever fine soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded. Dumb People TownThis is one of my favorite new soundcasts. I’ve already reviewed this thing a couple of times for both Splitsider and Huffington Post. It features Jason and Randy Sklar, comedians probably best known in Soundcastland for their Sklarbro Country show. And Daniel Van Kirk, who hosts his own show Hindsight and frequently appears on Doug Loves Movies as Mark Wahlberg. In Dumb People Town, they take one of the oldest tricks in the soundcasting book – reading news articles about assorted weirdos and the situtations they get into – and just riff mercilessly about and around them. Joining them in their 7th episode was Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, who was definitely up for this kind of monkey business. The Anti Social Show Now into their late teen episode, it's just high time we featured a clip from The Anti Social Show, co-hosted by our esteemed Associate Producer Tyson Saner and our Esteemed Listener Hunter Block. You can find The Anti Social Show episodes on SoundCloud. The Nerd BlitzHarvested by Tyson, we have a clip from The Nerd Blitz with Doom and Fitz. If you’re a REALLY regular listener of Succotash, you might remember Fitz as being one-half of the Jump To The End soundcast, which we featured back in Epi71 in 2013. You might remember it…I didn’t. But Tyson DID, which is one of the many reason we keep him around. Their tagline is “Real Nerds Talkin’ Real Nerdy Shit” and the real nerdy shit in this clip is from their Epi20, entitled: Turkey Baster 3-Way, where they discuss The Hobbit and the other Tolkien films while playing Battleship. The Story Worthy PodcastOne of my rules on Succotash is that we feature clips, we don’t play promos. Because any show can play another show’s promos. But we sample and listen and evaluate before we harvest our clips. (Unless you directly upload something to us at http://hightail.com/u/Succotash. Then we’ll pretty much play whatever — clip, promo, randoms note — you give us. And that holds true in this case for an old friend of the show, Christine Blackburn, co-host of the Story Worthy podcast, along with Hannis Phinney. Good One We’ve got a chunk from a new soundcast that’s only been out a few weeks called Good One, in which the host, Jesse David Fox, plays a joke or bit from a comedian, then has the comedian on to deconstruct the bit — where it came from, what it’s about, how it was developed, and why. A recent episode of Good One features Jesse’s visit with Weird Al Yankovic to talk about his song "Word Crimes", a parody of Robin Thicke’s 2013 “Blurred Lines”. In this clip they get into the weeds a bit about the intricacies of doing parody right. Beyond Yacht RockLet me ask you this: If you had an internet show called Yacht Rock and then wanted to expand on that premise, what might you call it. If you answer Beyond Yacht Rock, you’d be right. Subtitled Uncharted Journeys into Arbitrary Genres, it’s hosted by JD Ryznar, David B. Lyons, Hollywood Steve Huey, and Hunter Stair. This clip’s from Epi6 entitled “Divorcecore” from a little over a year ago. Just In TImeTyson discovered that a recent episode of the Just In Time soundcast thanked us for clipping them a few episodes ago. So I thought I’d play it here because I love playing clips from shows wehre they mention Succotash. A LITTLE HELP? If you’d like to help support our humble soundcast, it’s so easy. Get over to our homesite, at http://SuccotashShow.com and, from there, you can click on the Donate button, or use our Amazon banner to do your shopping, or even purch some merch from our Succotashery. I leave it all up to you. Every little bit of money we manage to scrounge up goes to help offset the production costs and maintenance of this show. Speaking of which, that's all she wrote when it comes to Succotash Clips, Epi149. It’s been a pleasure serving you. We hope to see you again and remember, always, to please pass the Succotash. Goodbye. — Marc Hershon

Howdy, howdy, howdy! It’s your ol' friend and audio neighbor Marc Hershon, host and rootin', tootin’ cowpoke for Epi147 of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Roundup. Yee haw! This installment has nothing to do with cowboys, it's actually an episode of Succotash Chats, where we focus on interviews with soundcasters, comedians, soundcaster/comedians, and just plain ol’ showbiz folk. Although, come to think of it, once I get into this episode's conversation with our guest, it is like looking back on a kind of wild West. I recently wrote a review on Huffington Post of Kicking Through The Ashes, a memoir of sorts by comedian Ritch Shydner. And then a couple of weeks after that review hit, Ritch was playing nearby at Mill Valley’s Throckmorton Theatre on a Tuesday night. After the show was over, we tried to get a bite to eat but the sidewalks roll up pretty early this side of the Golden Gate Bridge so we went to his hotel and chatted it up there for a bit and that's what you're going to hear. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE We have a double dose of our Burst O' Durst segment with political comedian and social commentator Will Durst, a short visit to the Tweetsack to read your tweets and emails, and we're sponsored this episode by Henderson's Parka Pants. STUFF IRL I'm in the process of putting together April's Fools, a sort of comedy variety show on Saturday, April 1st, and the Throckmorton Theater in Mill Valley, CA. It will feature our own Will Durst, past guest Larry "Bubbles" Brown, Debi Durst, Dan Spencer, Al Clethen, and a few other surprises. We’ll have a bunch of comedian and funny people doing standup, improv, readings, music, and more. So if your around the area, be sure to check that out if you want some good laughs to kick off your April entertainment calendar. You can find out more information online at http://142ThrockmortonTheatre.org PICK UP RITCH'S BOOK! Don't forget to grab a copy of Kicking Through The Ashes. Easiest way to do that is to hit the Amazon banner at the top of our http://SuccotashShow.com homesite, type in the title and get it in your hot little hands quick. PLACES TO LISTEN / WAYS YOU CAN HELP In addition to our homesite, iTunes, Stitcher, SoundCloud, and the Laughable app, you can hear each episode of Succotash on our Facebook page, catch us on iHeart Radio and even listen to us on YouTube - it's audio only, though but maybe you'd like looking at a still shot of Ritch Shydner for 56 minutes. As far as what you can do to help Succotash, the easiest and cheapest is to hit iTunes and give us 5 stars and a glowing review. You can also go to our homepage, click on the Donate button and slip us some green. Then there's the Amazon banner at the top of the page and the link to our Succotashery on the right hand side. Until next time our paths cross please remember to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
