RaeAnn Tucker joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to discuss food safety, monthly CPR classes, free gun locks, the monthly outreach event at the Henry County Fair, ticks, safe sharps disposal, and insurance navigators. June is National Safety Month, and the Henry and Stark County Health Departments, along with First Choice Healthcare, are offering free gun locks at clinics in Kewanee, Colona, and Toulon to help reduce gun-related injuries and deaths. Residents are encouraged to pick up locks weekdays between 8 AM and 4 PM. Firearm suicide claims 64 American lives daily, and keeping both guns and ammunition locked can sharply reduce these risks. Free gun locks are also available via the Veterans Crisis Line—call 988 and press 1, chat at VeteransCrisisLine.net, or text 838255. For more safety news, the departments are hosting free blood pressure checks, sharps disposal, and insurance help at the Henry County Fair on June 17th and 18th. The departments also offer Lyme disease screening and tick testing and are expanding access to safe disposal kiosks for used medical sharps at six locations. Monthly CPR classes and food safety guidance for local vendors round out the health focus. More details at henrystarkhealth.com.

In this episode: It's safe to say there's no single event that brings Putnam County together like our County Fair. This year, the Putnam County Fair will celebrate its 100th anniversary. As a Fair Board Member, what does this centennial celebration mean to you? In 2019, Putnam County authorized 196 acres on Tennessee Avenue to build our next fairgrounds. In addition to the fairgrounds, we've completed and opened the Putnam County Convention Center, with the new Expo Center under construction. How do you see the new location impacting our fair's success for the next 100 years? For most of us we walk through the gate and have no idea what it takes to make that happen. A camera system helps to identify issues like finding stray kids, or calming down guests who may have had too much fun. The LEOs are working hard for your safety and entertainment. One of the biggest recurring issues at the Clay Co. Fair has been access in and out of the Fiargrounds area on the 2-lane road, but recent traffic adjustments have improved traffic flow.

David McCuan, a professor of political science at Sonoma State University, discusses the findings of a recent Los Angeles Times exposé that showed how California's beloved county fairs, which generate $400 million annually, have become hotbeds of corruption where bookkeepers steal, officials rig bids, and governor-appointed boards feast on lobster and cabernet. With governance structures frozen since the 1880s and no state audits for years, one-third of these fairs are now plagued by fraud — even as they've become critical staging grounds for disaster response worth tens of millions in real estate.
The fall bird migration in California typically peaks from September through November. And this past year, scientists discovered a new wave of avian influenza - or bird flu. Two farms in Sonoma County fought new outbreaks. State officials have been taking steps to mitigate the spread of infection, since major outbreaks were seen in dairy herds in August of 2024. That includes at county fairs. Reporter: April Dembosky, KQED A new children's book from a Los Angeles author is inspired by her own childhood translating for her parents. In 2025 many Wisconsin county fairs were focused on more than just carnival rides and cotton candy. Jayme Buttke, executive secretary of the Wisconsin Association of Fairs says they were also focused on measuring their real worth to their communities, and strategizing how to engage the next group of volunteers. Buttke says there's been an emphasis all year on a state economic impact study initiative that has fairs taking a deeper look at what they bring to their community. Buttke says we've always known about the educational element that's obvious at fairs, but there's also other cultural benefits as well as financial rewards. Buttke says the results of the year long initiative will be a focal point for the 2026 WI Association of Fairs annual convention in January.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When I was a young man in my late teens, I played drums at a big church in West Tennessee where Sam Austin was pastoring. He now pastors somewhere in Arkansas now and is an evangelist. He would sometimes say, “You can clean up a pig and win first prize at the county fair but as soon as you get that clean pig home, it's running straight for the mud! Because that is what pigs do!” Paul tells Timothy, “Teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others...” Some people just aren't trustworthy, they take what they have been taught and do nothing with it, they just soak it all in and never share it, like pigs, they devour all the food and go play in the mud.

County Fairs are a rich part of the nations history. The term "fair" seems to have originated from the Latin word "feria" meaning a holy day. This reflects the historical link between religious festival and large gatherings for worship that combined vendors of wears. In the US the first county fairs were built around agriculture and ranching. Over the years they became places to showcase new technology and new products, creative cuisine and amusement rides built around new understandings of science and technology. Our country fairs are the root of community, bringing people together to celebrate and put the world aside for a period of time. They are a root we just fight to preserve. #BardsFM_TheAmericanBrand #BuildingCommunity #LovingThyNeighbor Bards Nation Health Store: https://www.bardsnationhealth.com MYPillow promo code: BARDS Go to https://www.mypillow.com/bards and use the promo code BARDS or... This week's episode is pure summer joy—and a celebration of one of Iowa's most beloved traditions. In a world where ambitious women are often told to “do it all,” we're flipping the script with July's podcast theme: just have fun. And who better to join us for that conversation than someone whose work quite literally brings fun to tens of thousands of people every single year? Meet Abby Jaeger, office manager of the Great Jones County Fair in Monticello, Iowa, a role that puts her at the heart of one of the most iconic summer events in the state of Iowa. For 173 years, this fair has been drawing farm families, concertgoers, foodies, and fun-seekers from across the state and behind it all is a team of dedicated folks like Abby who make the Five Best Days of Summer happen. In this episode, you'll hear: How Abby balances high-stakes logistics with heartfelt connection Why the fair is more than concerts and corn dogs—it's community What it takes to run a massive annual event while raising a young family The importance of trusting yourself, evolving with the times, and leading with heart Why sometimes, you just need a five-minute cry under your desk before getting back to work (relatable!) Favorite Quotes from Abby: "I love to work hard, and I love to work hard for things that I love. And this is that—a thousand percent." "I'm gonna take five. I'm gonna crawl under my desk, have a good fiver, and then get to work." "They're up before the pigs and cows get here, and they're awake when the beer tent closes.
