Vicki Barbolak is one of America's funniest and most authentic comedians. She was a fan favorite and top 10 finalist on Season 13 of America's Got Talent in 2018 on NBC. Howie Mandel told Vicki and America, “I think you just came up with your own sitcom, you're wonderful I love you.” And Simon said, “I think you're the best comedian we've had on this show.” Vicki was also featured on the 2019 AGT Champions show and Britain's Got Talent Champions. When Vicki was 38 years young, she saw an ad for a stand-up comedy class. That class changed her life. Vicki quickly realized that making people laugh gave her more happiness than she ever dreamed possible. After a few years of open mic nights, Vicki was taken under the wing of Mitzi Shore, owner of The Comedy Store where Vicki developed as a Comedian. E! Entertainment, in its True Hollywood Story of the Comedy Store and its owner, Mitzi Shore, predicted Vicki would be the next “breakout star” to come out of that famed institution. Drawing on her roller-coaster life of working in a family carpet business owned by her dad, a former Pittsburgh Steeler, dueling with ex-husbands who think alimony is an Italian ice-cream flavor and raising two great kids all while living in the ultra posh Vista Manor Trailer Park near San Diego. Vicki has created a comic persona that has earned her well-deserved praise. She is considered unique both in the character she has created as well as the fresh material she consistently delivers. In 2007 Vicki won Nickelodeon's “America's Funniest Mom” show hosted by Roseanne Barr. Roseanne was so impressed that she hired Vicki as one of her writers and requested that Vicki open for her at the New York New York Casino in Las Vegas. In addition to being crowned as America's Funniest Mom, Mark Ross and Bob Reid, Talent Coordinators for the Jay Leno Show selected Vicki for the 2010 Jay Leno Laugh Squad. Family Circle Magazine's September 2011 Issue profiles Vicki as an Expert in Joke Telling for their feature article, “How to Do Anything Better”. Vicki's true story about performing Stand up at a funeral was included in Mark Schiff and Rich Snyder's Best Selling Book, “I Killed, Road Stories from America's Top Comics”. Vicki was one of six comediennes winning a nationwide search for “Jenny's Comedy Diva's” on the Jenny Jones Show. Vicki also was the first winner of “California's Funniest Female” Contest. Vicki is also the proud winner of the “Russian River Gay Comedy Festival.” JONES.SHOW is a weekly podcast featuring host Randall Kenneth Jones (author, speaker & creative communications consultant) and Susan C. Welcome to the first episode of Season Seven of the Bagley Wright Lecture Series on Poetry podcast. Season Seven is comprised of lectures written and delivered by Douglas Kearney during his tenure as a Bagley Wright Lecturer. We begin with Kearney's talk, "I Killed, I Died: Banter, Self-Destruction, and the Poetry Reading." This talk was originally given September 25, 2020, at Cave Canem, via Zoom. While reading from early drafts of Patter, a collection about miscarriage, infertility, and making a Black family in the U.S., Douglas Kearney's relationship to audiences at poetry gigs changed. Informed by stand-up, improvisational music, and artists from Nina Simone to the Black Took Collective, Kearney began engaging the time between poems—the banter—to activate the imaginative space of association, mess, and discomfort he pursues in his written work: live. This lecture will get into the tension between pain and its performance, comedians' ideas of “killing” and dying,“ along with tips on how to sprint into a stone wall without getting hurt much. There are two brief moments where the audio cuts out in this recording. At around nine minutes, Kearney says, "'Miscarriages' were the sum of the takeaway that I couldn't, then shouldn't, make anyone feel what I had felt. And why? I would love to say that it would be to avoid cruelty…”. At around fourteen minutes, after "Just pay me for writing the damn poem!" Kearney continues, "Banter is of unknown etymological origins...". Visit us at our website, www.bagleywrightlectures.org, for more information about Bagley Wright lecturers, as well as links to supplementary materials on each lecturer's archive page, including selected writings. Douglas Kearney's book based on his BWLS lectures, Optic Subwoof (Wave Books, 2022) is forthcoming in November, and is available for preorder here. Conversation #186, recorded on October 18, 2021. Ritch Shydner has a long history in the stand-up comedy game, appearing on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show and the early days of David Letterman. He's gone on to be a prolific comedy writer, working with Jeff Foxworthy, Jay Leno, Bill Maher, Roseanne and even Norm MacDonald. His return to stand-up was charted in the 2010 documentary I AM COMIC, and he helped compile great stories of the road in the essential comedy text I KILLED. Now he's putting his mind for comedy history to good use with his new one-man show A HISTORY OF STAND-UP COMEDY FROM THE CIVIL WAR TO TODAY: 160 Years of Standup in 90 Minutes. This one-of-a-kind crash course in comedy is a link to the past of the an art form that has never been popular and somehow not often understood. He's got shows at Yard Theatre on Melrose in LA on Oct 21 and 22, and will be booking more events across the country in late 2021.  Hail Satire! is hosted and produced by Vic Shuttee. Meet DebS, author of the upcoming Memoir "The Day I didn't Kill Myself."After finishing writing her book she wondered - what next?   A member of the Writing the Book Inside You  Facebook Group, Debs met with Caryl to get some input on her next best steps. Listen to how she got clarity on her book title, sub-title and the opening paragraphs which Caryl advised should "hook the reader" from the get-go.Debs says how she originally titled her book "How Words Can Change your Life" or "How words Can Heal your Life".  The book she says is "essentially my memoir about how I became depressed following a divorce, and then having suicidal thoughts. And obviously, I didn't follow up on that otherwise, I wouldn't be here today."It was initially all about the words, the words that jumped into her head, then it was about words that people had said to her. "I thought the title seemed to make sense, celebrating that there is such a thing as life after divorce, there is such a thing as life after depression, there is such a thing as life after having suicidal thoughts," she says. One day she heard the poem "The Morning after I Killed myself".  It was written from the point of view of somebody wishing that they hadn't, but it was too late.In this interview, she shares the story of how this led to her final title "The Day I didn't kill myself." "But I didn't have a very good subtitle," she says.  That's where Caryl Westmore gave her key ideas which made her subtitle enticing for readers. You will also hear how the opening of the book got a new hook.Realizing she was near-suicidal 20 years ago sent Debs on a healing journey which she shares in this interview.  It is also woven into the book (with many of the therapies that helped her including Emotional Freedom Techniques). She hopes that she can help others who are on the brink of despair and depression to realize there IS life after divorce and deep depression.Debs also shares how much of her adult depression and feelings of being unloved originated in her early childhood when her Mum, suffering from post-natal depression and mental health issues left home with her brother - leaving her feeling unlovable and abandoned.A key part of her healing journey was to rescue and re-parent her Younger Self and to talk over the past with her mother.Writing is a cathartic journey says Debs who recommends it to anyone who is thinking of writing a transformational memoir. This episode is sponsored by the book "You Can Break-Free Fast EFT Tapping" by Caryl Westmore and the companion book "Power Boost the Law of Attraction with Mat✅ Recommended - get my FREE CHECKLIST:5 Book Hooks you must have to Captivate non-fiction Readers: Checklist (Free): https://www.writethebookinsideyou.com/freegift ✅ Connect with Caryl Westmore on social media! https://www.facebook.com/carylwestmoreauthorhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/bookinsideyouhttps://twitter.com/carylwestmoreukShow Sponsors: Books for Writers by Caryl Westmore: Bust Writer's Block Forever www.bustwritersblock.com and The Inner Path of Writing, Make Love not War to the Writer Within . https://bit.ly/3tIukSi Grateful! Regardless of the innumerable technical challenges with the new Zoom interface, presenting to Only Me on the Facebook, thrice, despite being posted Public, the absence of notifications, the ridiculous beginning when we did finally just go for it anyway, this was one of my favorite shows in 4 yrs. Comedian, Ritch Shydner is affable, warm, hysterically funny, evolved, intelligent, and downright entertaining as (I'll take Seinfeld's advice and not go blue) all get out (ugh). Ritch exceeded all expectations, and, knowing him, mine were high. BAM! He took the stresses of the day and washed them the fuck away. Ooops. We talked love and marriage, third time's the charm, addiction alcoholism, sugar blues, using the funny to cope, sitting down to law school, standing up, for the life he loves. Art Carney, Red Skelton. Robert Klein, George Carlin,.Richard Pryor, Carson, Leno, beforementioned Seinfeld, came up a deserving lot, Larry David Larry Miller. Bill Maher, Carol Liefer, Kathleen Wilhoite, Paul Reiser, Jeff Foxworthy, Roseanne, Don Rickles, Rodney Dangerfield, Sam Kinison, Bob Nelson, The Ramones, Married With Children, The Idolmaker, I Killed, Kicking the Ashes (or Holes if you’re a lame host), and Artemus Ward, the first standup comic, and his wife, the first American sex symbol. Fun, all! I can think of no better cure for the pandemic blues… hours later I’m still high, and I’m sober. Ritch is happy sauce, no sugar, no guilt, no booze. All of my thumbs WAY up. If you’re a comic, you most likely own a copy of “I Killed: True Stories of the Road from America’s Top Comics,” a book of short stories compiled by comedy legend Ritch Shydner. Over a 30-year career, Ritch has seen it all and done it all. We met after I read (and loved) his second book, “Kicking Through the Ashes.” We discuss his books, doing comedy at a time when it wasn’t even called “stand-up” yet, the comedy boom of the 80s, open-mics to being on Carson, and hanging with Dangerfield.Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos, and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura, and Dan Cummins. He recorded his first album Biggest Thing in 2013, and his latest album Heard Enough Yesterday, hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. Both can be heard on iTunes, Amazon and Pandora.Ritch's new book, Kicking Through The Ashes: My Life as a Stand-up in the 1980's Comedy Explosion, is OUT NOW! Read a story from the book here..In the 1980s, Ritch made numerous appearances on TV, including Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. Who is Ritch Shydner: In the 1980’s, Ritch made numerous appearances on TV, including Late Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show with both Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. He did an HBO half-hour special, “One Night Stand.” He played Al Bundy’s co-worker on “Married with Children”, and made guest appearances on many other TV shows, such as “Designing Women” and “Roseanne.” Ritch was able to translate his modest success on TV into an obscure film career, appearing in Steve Martin’s, "Roxanne," and Eddie Murphy's, "Beverly Hills Cop II," before moving on to minor roles on smaller pictures. Ritch wrote for sitcoms such as "Roseanne", "The Jeff Foxworthy Show," and HBO’s “The Mind of the Married Man.” Ritch wrote material for Jeff Foxworthy’s Grammy-nominated comedy albums, “Totally Committed,” and “Big Fun.” He also wrote for Ron White and Jay Leno. In 2006 Ritch was a co-author of a book on stand-up, “I Killed”. Currently, Ritch is writing a movie adaptation for HBO of Bill Maher's book, "True Story". Ritch's new book, Kicking Through The Ashes: My Life as a Stand-up in the 1980's Comedy Explosion, is OUT NOW! Read a story from the book here.. Favorite Career Highlight: In 2010 Ritch produced and performed in an award-winning documentary on the world of stand-up comedy, “I Am Comic”. Who is Abraham Lincoln: Abraham Lincoln, a self-taught lawyer, legislator and vocal opponent of slavery, was elected 16th president of the United States in November 1860, shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. Lincoln proved to be a shrewd military strategist and a savvy leader: His Emancipation Proclamation paved the way for slavery’s abolition, while his Gettysburg Address stands as one of the most famous pieces of oratory in American history. In April 1865, with the Union on the brink of victory, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth; his untimely death made him a martyr to the cause of liberty, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest presidents in U.S. history. The Summer of Rad returns! This week the rad gang hits the great outdoors (i.e. Kyle's lovely backyard) with Matt Lantrip and Brandie Posey, two Warped Tour veterans, to discuss this venerable summer music institution. It's the day after Kyle and Nat's big Fourth of July party, and Kyle and Laura spend a lot of the episode downing leftover Jello shots. The gang weighs in on the good, the bad, and the ugly side of the festival and talks about the influence of things like Hot Topic and Myspace on the way that a generation of kids found music. (The late '90s and early '00s pop punk ecosystem was a delicate place full of a lot of dyed hair with swoopy side bangs, and this group has some opinions about it.) About halfway through, Kyle's brother Kasey joins the fray. Together, they chat about the best acts they've ever seen along with a few of the worst. They also have a spirited debate about the most "Warped Tour" band of all time and give some tips for how to make it through a hot day at the festival without dying. Plus, The Living End might be the world's most underrated live band, Less Than Jake are still great after all these years, and there is some debate about the merits of pop punk. The group also explores some of the festival's recent and past controversies. Prepare to hear a bunch of people fire off about a million band names and enjoy Natalie shaking her head at every last one of them. Many more live in silence, believing that what they're experiencing is normal, or convincing themselves that medication for the mind is something to be ashamed of. This is the story of Sean's quest for normalcy. Sean Michael Hayes is the author of a trilogy of books about his experience, the first of which, Five Weeks in the Amazon is available here. We just barely graze it in our episode, but the book spans the full breadth of Sean's time in Peru. Look for his second memoir, I Killed a Black Dog, coming soon. Tom Rhodes Radio Smart Camp

This episode was recorded in Burbank, California. Ritch Shydner is a comedian I always looked up to an admired while I was growing up, having watched him on Johnny Carson, David Lettermen and his HBO special. I had known him for years before I ever knew that he was there at El Brookman's in Washington D.C. the night my father took me there to see comedy when I was 12 years old. That night changed my life forever and Ritch remembers some of the details more clearly than I do. The fact that he remembers the night there was a kid (me) in the audience that night makes my love and respect for him hit hyperspace.  He wrote a book called "I Killed" which was a compilation of the greatest comedian road stories of all time. That book remains text book learning for young comedians looking to gain insight on the business of comedy. He writes for Bill Maher and in recent years has been helping turn Bill Maher's book "True Stories" into a screen play. Everytime I run into this man at the clubs he always puts a smile on my face. He is a warrior who grew into a wise man. He is a wise Buddha of comedy wisdom and knowledge. It is my pleasure to present to you the one and only Ritch Shydner.
