Debatovaná díla: The Way of the Wind (režie: Terrence Malick), Vlny (režie: Jiří Mádl), Christopher Owens: I Think About Heaven, Dimitri Verhulst: Mít a být, Past (režie: M. Night Shyamalan), Animotion: Obsession Celý podcast sledujte na http://www.Echoprime.cz X: http://twitter.com/echo24cz Facebook: http://twitter.com/echo24cz
Dr. Salva recommends co-creating text with newcomer students. It is no-prep and high return on investment. Key for accelerating language acquisition is to reuse that text! This episode is full of ideas for what teachers can do to support language acquisition through the re-purposing of co-created text.
Emily Francis (@EmilyFranESL), author of If You Only Knew: Letters from an Immigrant Student joins Dr. Carol Salva (@DrCarolSalva) to discuss Free Voluntary Reading with Newcomers and her own journey.
Dr. Salva reflects on holding our nSewcomers in high regard and teach them what to day when they don't know what to say. Language is not a cognitive issue. We need this important strategy so that everyone can be included and participate. But some things can go wrong when they don't speak the target language yet.
Are you ready?? In some parts of the world, we are already in Back-to-School PD! So, as we do every year, we are sharing top tips for the New Arrival classroom & how they may look in the current reality. Carol Salva talks about the 2021-2022 school year with Stephen Hurley on a LIVE Boosting Achievement episode and that show is a big chunk of this podcast episode.
Carol Salva (@MsSalvaC) & Stephen Hurley (@Stephen_Hurley) are joined by special guest Dr. Margaret Aisichovich (@MAisicovich). Dr. Aisicovich is a PhD, author, former ESL educator, former principal and more. Her research is important to our thinking about how prepared we feel to support SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education). This show offers an opportunity to reflect on the capability of SLIFE and the impact we can have as teachers, administrators, and educational organizations.
What supports can a designated immigrant/refugee program provide for students and families that go beyond what a typical school or district may be providing? After the past year of interrupted learning, what can we learn from educators who have worked with SIFE students and newcomers - particularly when it comes to social-emotional needs? How are refugees actively benefiting or improving the communities they are in, and in turn how can community partnerships play a vital role in supporting refugee students and families? We discuss these questions and much more with Rebecca Masters. Rebecca Masters is a Senior Youth Coordinator for New American Pathways, an Atlanta based nonprofit with the mission of Helping Refugees and Georgia Thrive. Their vision is for new Americans in metro Atlanta to become successful, contributing, and welcomed members of Georgia's communities. They fulfill these goals by offering the most comprehensive, fully integrated continuum of services targeted to meet the specific needs of refugees and other immigrants in Georgia. Our conversation with Rebecca focuses on educational services that supplement the amazing work schools are doing to support their newcomers. Special thanks to Julie Allen of International Community School in Clarkston, GA for introducing us to Rebecca. You can find additional resources and episode takeaways on our ELL Community page at ellevationeducation.com/ellcommunity. If you haven't done so already, we invite you to join our ELL Community while you're there so you get weekly resources, strategies and tips from that you can use right away. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/highest-aspirations/message
From pre-K to high school to college, the COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on nearly all aspects of American education. One field of research, however, may offer some insight into its potential impacts on students. In a new article, University of Virginia researcher Chris Chang-Bacon draws on years of research into Students with Interrupted Formal Education, or SIFE, and offers lessons for educators working to support students following a year of disruption and disconnection. Chang-Bacon joins CPRE Knowledge Hub managing editor Keith Heumiller to discuss his work and some evidence-backed recommendations for policymakers, school leaders, researchers and other stakeholders attempting to navigate a post-COVID world. He also discusses how supports used during the pandemic can be preserved for future generations of SIFE students.

What does rigor mean for students with interrupted formal education (SIFE)? How do we recognize and leverage the experiences newcomers bring to improve the education of all students? Why is it important that educators embrace a mindset that constantly challenges beliefs about students and what they are capable of? We discuss these topics and much more in our conversation with Carol Salva. Carol is a former elementary educator and has most recently taught newcomer English Language Development in both high school and middle school. She is also a consultant with Seidlitz Education, where she specializes in using researched-based sheltered strategies to teach grade-level content to unschooled/under-schooled language learners. With proven success including these students in content area classes, Carol is able to support teachers to make these efforts practical and to the betterment of the general population. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/highest-aspirations/message
