I've never considered myself a person who cares about fashion or "style" so when I first stumbled across Julie Allen on Instagram, I didn't expect to stick around. But something about the way she talked about clothes felt different. It was kind, approachable, and freeing. Julie teaches women how to embrace style tools instead of style rules, and as I listened to her, I realized how much that philosophy overlaps with how I think about motherhood. There's no one right way to be a mom—or to get dressed. It's about finding what fits you and building a life you love from there. Julie is a mom of six and a style educator who's passionate about helping women reconnect with themselves through the way they show up each day. In this episode, she shares three style principles that double as beautiful life lessons for moms—and they might just shift the way you think about both your wardrobe and your parenting. We'll talk about: ✨ How to use style (and motherhood) tools instead of rigid rules ✨ Why you're allowed to express different parts of yourself—on any given day ✨ The importance of building your motherhood on a foundation of your core values Whether or not you've ever cared much about fashion, this episode will help you feel more confident in showing up as you. By the 1980's, that number went down to 0.6 percent due to office-centered medicine and mega-health systems. So I ask? What would you prefer to have when it comes to having access to your doctor.Say hello to Dr. Julie. With 10 years of Urgent Care Experience and equipped with her grandfather's medical bag, Julie is bringing back 'house calls' and today I want to put a BIG SPOTLIGHT on what I believe is a brilliant idea. How does this look? That is what we uncover in our conversation.HOST STEVE BUZZARD on Julie Allen: "Julie has a brilliant idea that I feel that is going to take off and be the new wave of families and individuals who need a doctor. I love the idea so much that I have become one of Julie's patients. She was in and out of treatment during her entire teenage years and into her early 20s. Her breaking point was a rape at 18 that took her eating disorder to a whole new level of self-hatred and lack of regard for her own life with an attempted suicide. She has been in recovery for a decade now and is passionate about dismantling diet culture and stigmas around mental illness. She has found her fertile ground as CEO of a body-positive, self-love promoting, women-empowering clothing boutique, Mary Rose NW Boutique. She has been hailed as an "innovative producer" (Wine Enthusiast) who is "revolutionizing the world of wine" (Kourtney Kardashian's POOSH). Aaliyah updates ancient women's garden winemaking traditions for 21st century tastes. As Phil Long, winemaker/founder of Longevity Wines and president of the Association of African American Vintners, recently told NBC TV News, Aaliyah is "defying odds at every turn. She is not only a young Black woman getting into the wine world, which is not as diverse as it should be, but she's also making a new category that doesn't exist in this industry.'" Free Range Flower Winery's rare flower wines tend to sell out long before the next vintage is in the bottle. The winery's mission is based on an organic, sustainable, local business model as well as creating a welcoming, inclusive space for everyone to enjoy its wine. Aaliyah deeply believes in innovation in winemaking and the power of magnifying diverse voices in the industry. When she's not making wine, Aaliyah is a health and nutrition educator for an advocacy and education nonprofit called Healthy Black Families. Free Range Flower Winery is committed to using organic ingredients, sustainable business practices, and local vendors. They are dedicated to uplifting the community and donate a percentage of sales to nonprofits that share their values.Next week on the Finding Fertile Ground podcast, I interview Julie Allen, who I interviewed for Companies That Care earlier this year. At the end Julie also talks about her approach to food and eating as she parents very young children.  This conversation will be helpful to those who struggle with disordered eating or those who have a more extreme pattern of eating issues which are best helped by inpatient care.  Julie now owns a women's clothing boutique which caters to all sizes of bodies, and donates a portion of all sales to help those who need eating disorder treatment but can't afford it. When Julie Allen, an eating disorder awareness activist, CEO of the Mary Rose Boutique, and founder of the Mary Rose Foundation, was in inpatient treatment in her teens and early 20's, her parents needed to take out a second mortgage on their home (to pay for cost). Her treatment saved her life from anorexia and bulimia. Now, she's on a mission to offer financial support so people can receive the treatment they need when they're recovering from eating disorders.  When she went shopping 4 years ago, while her newborn son was only 6-weeks old, she kept hearing subtle messages that something was wrong with her postpartum body.  That's when she opened Mary Rose Boutique in Oregon. Julie wants to offer women an inclusive shopping experience where they know that their body is beautiful and they can wear clothes that make them feel comfortable and good about themselves.  On the podcast, Julie also shares how being okay with her fears and practicing self-compassion were the most pivotal for her in her eating disorder recovery.  Check out the Mary Rose Boutique here.  Follow Julie @maryrosenwboutique @maryrosefoundation

What supports can a designated immigrant/refugee program provide for students and families that go beyond what a typical school or district may be providing? After the past year of interrupted learning, what can we learn from educators who have worked with SIFE students and newcomers - particularly when it comes to social-emotional needs? How are refugees actively benefiting or improving the communities they are in, and in turn how can community partnerships play a vital role in supporting refugee students and families? We discuss these questions and much more with Rebecca Masters. Read more and view photos on my website. The Companies that Care podcast highlights business leaders who are making a difference in the world. I have a passion for companies that care and give back to their communities, like  Mary Rose Boutique NW. Julie Allen founded Mary Rose Boutique NW and the sister Mary Rose Foundation, a 501C3 nonprofit. Julie has a mission of helping ALL people feel beautiful and confident. With every purchase, Mary Rose donates a portion of the sales to the Mary Rose Foundation to  fund eating disorder treatment. As someone who struggled with eating disorders herself, and who also has not always felt beautiful in a dressing room, Julie is disrupting the fashion industry. “I am on this mission to fight diet culture…I had anorexia and bulimia for so long that it  has opened my eyes to the way things are spun and the way things are portrayed in the media.”Julie has a mirror in her shop called an affirmation mirror. Customers  write affirming messages with dry erase markers on the mirror, like “I am worthy of love,” “I deserve to love myself,” and “I am beautiful.” When people come out of the fitting room, those messages are the first things they see.  I asked Julie what advice she has for others who want to create companies that care. “Find something you care about, something you are very passionate about and that can get you through hard days…when you have a bigger mission to what you are doing, that is what will get you through those hard days and give you motivation to keep going…find whatever you are passionate about, whatever fills your cup and can fill others' cups…find whatever that is for you and stick to that and filter everything that you do through that lens. Ask, ‘Is this serving my greater purpose of why I am in business?'”I interviewed Julie again after reading that she's been rebooting her inventory to be more sustainable. She realized how damaging the fashion industry is for the environment. “The fashion industry is terrible for our planet. It's the third leading contributor to  waste and pollution...we had a massive, 5000-square-foot warehouse…It was just overwhelmingly shocking to me how much stuff was there.”This epiphany caused Julie to shift the way she was doing business. “Fast fashion” helped her business survive COVID, but she had to put a stop to it. She realized her efforts to promote size inclusion and dismantle diet culture were  contributing to  environmental and ethical damages. “There's no such thing as cheap fashion…somebody, somewhere is paying for it…whether it's you or I on the consumer end, or whether it's the worker that is not paid an ethical wage…”Julie cut out 90 percent of her vendors. It's been a positive change. She's had a challenge finding sustainable clothing in inclusive sizes. Now she is working to develop her own line of sustainable, size-inclusive clothing. Julie recently hired an executive director for the foundation. She is particularly interested in helping middle school youth. The foundation is working to develop education and outreach programs to help increase youth self-esteem, promote body acceptance, body love, and self-love; and create positive coping skills to prevent eating disorders. Julie was a fun, dynamic guest and I look forward to meeting her in person! On both of my podcasts I strive to highlight voices from underrepresented populations, especially people of color, women, people who are LGBTQIA, non- Christian, and immigrants, people who don't always get a platform. Read the full blog post and view photos. This week on the Finding Fertile Ground podcast, I interview Ruth L. Schwartz, a writer, teacher, and consciousness-shifter. Ruth has published eight books and taught at six universities, and now she runs the Conscious Girlfriend Academy, the leading global program supporting lesbians and queer women to date wisely and love well.Ruth was born to parents who were only 18 and 20 when she was born. Her mother had never even held a baby before and they didn’t know they had to burp a baby. They all had to learn together how to be parents. When her dad was off at a college class, she and her mom would be sat home, crying together. Her father was brilliant, but his life was a cautionary tale for Ruth. He changed from a magical figure in her early childhood to mentally unstable, volatile, and addicted to speed when she was 10. As an emergency room physician, he was a thrill seeker until he lost his job and ended up on the streets addicted to heroin. He died earlier this year at the age of 79.Ruth places a big emphasis on trying to make use of things that have happened to her in life.“You often hear that the wounds become the gifts, but also the gifts become the wounds.”Ruth came out as a lesbian at the age of 20 when she was in college. “I love the complexity of being with women.”Perhaps because she’s drawn to complexity, some of her relationships have been complex as well. When Ruth was 28, she fell in love with a Puerto Rican woman named Gladys whose kidneys failed a few years later.  “I donated my kidney to her because I loved her. It just seemed like the thing to do. I had two. She needed one.”Then several years ago a long-time partner transitioned from female to male. They started Conscious Girlfriend together in 2013 to teach other queer women how to be conscious girlfriends. In the past 7-1/2 years, women from 22 countries have taken Ruth’s classes. Her students who come out later in life are often floored at the degree of intensity that often exists in relationships with other women. Ruth teaches queer women how to navigate the complexities of relationships with women and how to date more wisely. The Conscious Girlfriend Academy is a worldwide community of women who thought they were the only ones who had experienced these things. What Ruth enjoys the most is helping women find other likeminded, growth-oriented women. Before Ruth founded Conscious Girlfriend, she wrote poetry, taught creative writing, worked as a health educator, and earned a PhD in transpersonal psychology. Ruth is inspired by the women she works with every day through the Conscious Girlfriend Academy. She told of a recent conversation with a woman who suppressed her own sexual identity because she lives in a conservative area in the south. Now she is meeting other women with similar stories, and she's getting to talk about her relationships in ways she has never had the chance to before. She describes it as grit and resilience all the time.“I feel very fortunate that all the ways I've woven all accidents into my purpose have led me to this place.”Next week I interview Julie Allen with Mary Rose Boutique NW and Mary Rose Foundation on Companies That Care. Julie’s created a clothing boutique where every woman can leave feeling beautiful, and her sister foundation raises money to pay for eating disorder treatment for girls who cannot afford it. The following week I’ll be back to Finding Fertile Ground with Melissa Pierce, who was widowed with two young children at a very young age.

East Bay Yesterday
A town within The Town: Oakland Army Base workers on its rise and fall

East Bay Yesterday

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2020 68:04

From World War II until Desert Storm, the Oakland Army Base was the U.S. military’s largest seaport West of the Mississippi. This site had been a sandy marsh the previous century, and for millennia before that, but at its peak during the Vietnam War, it grew into “the largest military port complex in the world.” Situated at an industrial confluence of roads, rails, and shipping lanes, it served as a supply hub for the entire Pacific. Although hundreds of thousands of service members passed through en route to overseas assignments, most of the day-to-day workers at this “town within The Town” were civilians. For decades, burly ILWU members hoisted a nonstop stream of cargo, college girls working as part-time secretaries filed mountains of paperwork, determined clerks climbed the ranks of civil service, and countless others staffed the Base’s grocery store, morgue, bowling alley, night club, and other facilities. After the Base was decommissioned in 1999, during a wave of closures that wiped out the Bay Area’s formerly substantial military presence, UC Berkeley’s Oral History Center spoke with dozens of people (military and civilian) about their connections to this site. The interviews, compiled in “The Oakland Army Base: An Oral History,” span topics ranging from an astonishing tale about President Roosevelt’s visit to resentments still lingering over the Base’s unexpected termination and controversial redevelopment process. In these stories, whiskey flows, fists fly, foundations are driven deep into mud, careers flash by, trust is earned, orders are disobeyed, victories are celebrated with songs and parades, roads crumble, and cold, wooden coffins are draped with American flags. Instead of contextualizing these memories with narration, per this podcast’s usual format, I’ve decided to present these voices as an audio collage, assembled in roughly chronological order. Hearing these interview tapes felt like time-traveling and my goal was to create an episode that captures the feeling of taking a four-dimensional guided personal tour through the kaleidoscopic history of this sprawling complex. If you want the full, immersive experience of tasting the salty wind while you listen, head down to Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (which is adjacent to the former Base site) or the path that parallels Burma Rd. Social distancing shouldn’t be a problem – truck drivers far outnumber pedestrians in this flat, grey stretch of far West Oakland. I wouldn’t recommend walking along Maritime St, the main drag that cuts through the heart of the Base site, due to the constant flow of noisy semis and gritty construction dust, which tends to get in your eyes during the often gusty days. To see images related to this episode, visit: https://eastbayyesterday.com/ Special thanks to Oral History Center’s project team: Martin Meeker (director), David Dunham, Vic Geraci, Lisa Rubens, Ann Lage, Robin Li, Jess Rigelhaupt, and Julie Allen. In today’s culture, having compassion for ourselves isn’t always the number one priority. Instead, we are constantly hearing the message that we should be hard and critical on ourselves.  In this episode, I’m talking with Julie Allen. Julie is a mom based out of Portland, Oregan to a busy toddler aged son and a young step daughter. She started Mary Rose North West Boutique because she recognized the need for a clothing boutique that focused on body positivity, self-love/acceptance, and helping women feel confident in their clothes. Her goal is to carry pieces that help women feel just as beautiful as they truly are.  Julie struggled with anorexia and bulimia for 15 years and has made it her mission to empower women to love themselves and embrace themselves whole-heartedly. In addition to her body positive boutique, Julie also created the Mary Rose Foundation, a non-profit 501c3 organization designed to help women who are struggling with the financial burdens of an eating disorder.  Julie's message is simply one of strength, courage, self-compassion and most of all, hope. We are talking about how having compassion for yourself can help you approach your life in a way that is empowering.    Today we are sharing: Julie’s top three lessons that she has learned as a mom entrepreneur Practical ways to show yourself compassion Tips for building your bravery muscle Links mentioned in the episode:   “Brave Not Perfect” by Reshma Saujani : https://amzn.com/1524762334 Episode 1: Welcome to the Podcast - https://cassierighter.com/2019/06/30/episode-01-welcome-to-the-podcast/ Connect with Julie www.maryrosenwboutique.com Join the VIB group on Facebook: facebook.com/groups/maryrosenwboutique/ Instagram: instagram.com/maryrosenwboutique/   Connect with Cassie  Find out more at: www.cassierighter.com Join me in my FREE Facebook Group!  https://www.facebook.com/groups/moms.making.an.impact/ Connect with me on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/moms.making.an.impact/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/cassierighter/
