Blair Milo, founding director of the Center for Talent and Opportunity, took on a huge career opportunity, drove innovation, and then confronted a problem she couldn't outwork. One minute into this episode and you'll know how hard Blair works. She went from distinguished naval officer to city mayor before the age of 30. Like you, she's an ambitious, go-get 'em tiger, high achiever who does. not. shy. away. from hard work. But hard work doesn't solve all your problems. Gggggaaaaaasssssspppp. Did I just say that? Yep. You can't outwork all of your problems.  Asking for the right kind of help can be the difference between an okay leader and a phenomenal one. Mayor Milo was driving a once-in-a-lifetime transition for her small town. They were all in and there was no going back. Think: this manufacturing plant that's been closed for decades needs a new life in a new century. She had 4 leadership team members' transition out in 6 months' time and she thought they were her ride-or-die gurus all in for the wild ride. They weren't and they were gone. It didn't matter if Blair worked 6 hours or 26 hours a day. There's no way she could have fixed this on her own. Listen in for Blair's "oh boy" moments and her lessons learned from propelling LaPorte, Ind. into the 21st century with her team. The old one and the new one. Here are some my notes and I'd love to see yours in the comments. The downside of innovation The importance of putting the mission first at every level What to do when you're overwhelmed with people problems and why it's not personal Why you'll never really be ready for the big challenges Always err on trying to see the best in somebody When an organization makes a commitment, its people make the commitment too How to answer, "What have I gotten myself into to?" Hard work won't solve all your problems. How to prioritize people, team, and mission This problem is not the emergency you think it is Prioritize your team's life outside of work Your leader can't control as much as you think It's not right to put your expectations on your leader. About Blair Milo Blair Milo is the founding Director of the Center for Talent and Opportunity, a community resource at the Sagamore Institute focused on closing the wealth gap of the new majority by accelerating entrepreneurship and impact investing.  She previously served as the first Secretary of Career Connections and Talent, a newly created cabinet position by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb. In this role she launched the 21st Century Talent Regions initiative resulting in 80 Indiana counties forming regions to plan and implement strategies for attracting, developing, and connecting talent. She also helped create the Indiana Talent Network, a “network of networks” which connects stakeholders statewide in sharing best practices for equitable talent policies and strategies. Blair also served 13 years as a Surface Warfare Officer with the U.S. Navy serving aboard the USS Mason; Destroyer Squadron 50; the Surface Warfare Directorate at the Pentagon; and multiple Navy Reserve commands. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Purdue University and a Master of Professional Studies in Legislative Affairs from George Washington University. She serves on the Board of Governors for the Richard G Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series, the Board of Directors for the Mitch Daniels Leadership Foundation, and on the Dean's Advisory Councils for the Purdue University College of Liberal Arts and the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University.  Blair is a Fellow of the inaugural class of the Civil Society Fellowship, a partnership of ADL and The Aspen Institute, and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. Take the Hot Mess Hotline Quiz: As a leader, you've felt paralyzed by where to start first with your team's and organization's problems. Do you need team building or a frank conversation? Welcome to another episode of The Spotlight, a special segment inside the Grit NW Podcast where we acknowledge those programs that promote the visibility of blue-collar jobs in the commercial construction industry as a first-choice career alternative to the oversold notion that the only way to financial and professional success and security is with a college degree. On today’s show we will talk about Career Connections, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters program designed to fill the void left by the removal of shop class in many high school’s and middle schools’ curriculum. To help us understand this valuable and increasingly important connection to the craft skills needed to build and maintain our nation’s infrastructure and wealth, we have Meg Kilmer from the Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute, and Riley McCauley from the Northwest Carpenters Union. We’ll start our conversation by learning what the Career Connections program is and how the UBC designed it to meet the ever-increasing demand for the skilled workforce of tomorrow.Next, we will look into how easily the curriculum can be adopted by schools without an established vocational education program, to inspire their students to develop the life skills needed to be successful, regardless of what career path they choose. We will then discuss the merit’s of working with your hands and how the challenges of construction not only test you physically but cognitively as well as when doing complex layout, measurements, and design/build projects.Later we will look at how a Career Connections certification can fast track your entry into a pre-apprentice program and what it means to have tangible results upon completion of the course. And we will wrap up our discussion where you can find out more about Career Connections and how you or someone you know can find a satisfying, and financially rewarding career as a professional carpenter. As 2020 comes to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the numerous books that government officials from across the nation have recommended over the past several years. In the Arena’s podcast interviews have included many good book recommendations, often more than one, from government officials all over the country. The officials have suggested books for all kinds of reasons; some have enchanted them as a child, others have inspired them to pursue their current career of public service. Sometimes all the officials can manage is to list the three most recent books they have enjoyed because, as Blair Milo, Indiana’s secretary for Career Connections and Talent, explained, “I could no sooner pick a favorite star in the heavens,” than pick a single best book to read. Books often become favorites if they provide some sense of nostalgia or wonder. They can be an escape into an alternate reality or a world that satiates the present moment’s wanderlust. During the coronavirus pandemic, this can also act as a form of stress relief, an escape from the confines of the shelter-in-place orders. Los Angeles, Calif., Mayor Eric Garcetti turns to Jorge Luis Borges’ Ficciones, a book of short stories “and many of them are these beautiful fantastical metaphors for the universe.” But he also turns to books for hope, which can act as an escape from the fear and uncertainty of this global pandemic. He discusses how Marge Pearcy’s book of poetry, Stone, Paper, Knife, which gets its title from a poem that is “all about how, in the midst of struggle, do we still stay idealistic and hang on to hope, and hope rests in each one of us.” For others, a favorite book can be a connection to a cherished moment in time. For Kristen Cox, executive director of the Utah Governor’s Office of Management and Budget, it also happens to be a moment of triumph. “Because I had some vision growing up, they didn’t teach me braille. But then as I went more and more blind, I had no way to read,” Cox explains. After having her first son, she taught herself to read braille, learning a letter a day, so that she could read to her son. Eventually, she was proficient enough to read her first book in braille: The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. “I love The Hobbit anyway, but to read that in braille was a huge accomplishment for me.” Other times, a favorite book can create a cherished moment and connection between two people despite physical separation. For In the Arena host, Cathilea Robinett, and senior advisor to the California Office of Emergency Services, Karen Baker, this unity was fostered over a mutual favorite children’s book: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. “I just don’t know what secret garden is around the corner for me,” Baker explains. “The good is about to happen.” Books can offer us many things during these unprecedented times, whether that is escaping to a different land or building connection between two people and the public officials who have spoken with us “In the Arena” have read it all. We recently caught up with Courtney Ross and Tirza Austin of the American Society of Civil Engineers to talk about the variety of career resources ASCE offers through its online career center, called Career Connections. Started in 2003, Career Connections has grown strategically and organically into a multi-faceted resource that includes a job board, education hub, salary surveys, and information about career paths in engineering. But their career center is more than an information hub. Through initiatives like their Mentor Match mentoring program and a comprehensive directory to local ASCE branches and sections, the pair is working hard to encourage members to network offline and get involved in association-sponsored activities that can truly change their career paths. Tirza and Courtney share how they're overcoming the perception that Mentor Match is an engineering version of Match.com, and how they're letting each bit of feedback about ASCE's career resources guide their decisions about what to do next. If you're involved in your association's professional development or career resource programming, this episode is full of information and mini case-studies you'll definitely want to hear. Want to share your message with the Association Adviser community? Advertise on this podcast! Association professionals will hear about your business and your solutions as they listen for in-depth features about what's happening now - and next – in the association community. Your business belongs in this community, too. Go to Bit.ly/AdviserMediaKit for more info. Thanks to our podcast sponsor, Naylor Association Solutions. Royce Peters, senior technical coordinator for the Carpenters International Training Center (ITC) in Las Vegas, Nevada, was a guest on The POWER Podcast. The ITC is the largest and most-comprehensive training facility of its kind in the world. Following the completion of phase six of construction in 2018, the center now has more than 1.2 million square feet under-roof. Peters listed some of the unique training tools available at the facility, including a Frame 7 gas turbine, a 64-MW steam turbine, eight overhead bridge cranes, and a 16,000-gallon underwater-welding dive tank, among other things. The facility is one of the largest publishers of technical training materials in the world, with more than 120 books created and more under development. The Carpenters International Training Fund and its affiliated funds invest more than $200 million a year to develop and deliver training, enhance knowledge and skill sets, and create new opportunities for United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) members. Outreach programs include Career Connections, which targets high schoolers and inner-city residents, among others, with training leading to a career in the industry, and Helmets to Hardhats, which gives military members the opportunity to transition more easily to the civilian workforce. But people interested in joining the UBC don't have to go through one of the outreach programs, anyone can apply by contacting their nearest regional council office. There's a lot of see at the ITC and the ELECTRIC POWER Conference and Exhibition is making it possible by offering a tour of the facility as an option for attendees. To learn more and to register for the event, which will be held April 23–26, 2019, at The Mirage Events Center in Las Vegas, visit: https://2019.electricpowerexpo.com/.
