Abstract: Mammalian social behavior is highly context-sensitive. Yet, nothing is known about the mechanisms that modulate social behavior according to its context. Recent studies have revealed a network of mostly limbic brain regions, here termed the "social brain", which regulates social behavior. We hypothesized that coherent theta and gamma rhythms couple regions of the social brain into functional networks in a context-dependent manner. To test this concept, we simultaneously recorded extracellular activity from multiple social brain regions in mice performing three social discrimination tasks. Local field potential rhythmicity during a task was mainly sensitive to an internal arousal state. However, during stimulus investigation we observed a distinct state, which was sensitive to stimulus characteristics. Yet, the coherence between the various regions was most sensitive to the social context. Moreover, we found the ventral dentate gyrus to play a pivotal role in coordinating the context-specific rhythmic activity in the network. Copy rights belong to original authors. Do you ever run entire sessions without a combat encounter? This week we analyze how varying level of combat work in your TTRPG games. We discuss engaging the players in a way that simulates the thrill of combat but in social and exploration encounters. We also talk about the message of "might makes right" and how realism can affect players' enthusiasm or aversion to in-game violence.Mad Jack Churchill: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_ChurchillOur Website: https://icastspells.comOur Twitter: @passive_podcastOur Email: passiveaggropod@protonmail.comShow Breakdown:0:00: Intro0:44: TTRPG News13:41: Main Topic14:32: How much combat should I be including in my TTRPG sessions?25:49: Making non-combat encounters feel like combat.28:05: Giving individual players a chance to shine.31:53: Putting just as much prep energy into exploration and social encounters as you would stat blocks.34:00: Giving the players the tools to define the terms of their own fun.39:43: The message of "might makes right" in games.46:13: Outro

Welcome back to the British Society for Phenomenology Podcast. Season five features presentations from our 2020 annual conference: ‘Engaged Phenomenology’ Online. We begin, however, with an interview given by Professor Luna Dolezal, the host of the event. Dolezal is associate professor in Philosophy and Medical Humanities in the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health at the University of Exeter. The interview was recorded in August of this year, and first released to conference attendees. The interviewers are Jessie Stanier and Hannah Berry from the event team. In the interview Dolezal talks about what the theme of ‘Engaged Phenomenology’ means to her, as well as how she got into phenomenology and her research interests, her love of yoga, and how phenomenology can inform activism. Performance artist Marina Abramović also gets a look in. BIOS: Professor Luna Dolezal is associate professor in philosophy and medical humanities, the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health, University of Exeter. Her research is primarily in the areas of applied phenomenology, philosophy of embodiment, philosophy of medicine and medical humanities; and is driven by an interest in understanding lived experience and embodiment, and how these intersect with, are co-determined by, the socio-political and technological frameworks in which we are enmeshed. Her publications include the books New Feminist Perspectives on Embodiment (with C. Fischer); Body / Self / Other: the Phenomenology of Social Encounters (with D. Petherbridge); and The Body and Shame Phenomenology, Feminism, and the Socially Shaped Body. Jessie Stanier is a PhD student at the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health at the University of Exeter. She takes an engaged approach to her transdisciplinary research on phenomenology, ageing, and older age, collaborating with publics affected by the lived realities of ageing and caring. In her PhD thesis, she aims to shed new light on normative determinants of ageing and how they affect lived experiences and possibilities for older people. She is co-supervised by Dr Robin Durie, Dr Felicity Thomas, and Prof Luna Dolezal. She completed her MA in Philosophy at KU Leuven, Belgium, in 2018. Hannah Berry has recently completed her Ph.D. on a linguistic and phenomenological analysis of empathy. She has had a lectureship at Liverpool Hope University in Sociolinguistics and has taught at various institutions such as the University of Liverpool and Manchester Metropolitan University. She is now working in the adult education sector. This recording is taken from the BSP Annual Conference 2020 Online: 'Engaged Phenomenology'. Organised with the University of Exeter and sponsored by Egenis and the Wellcome Centre for Cultures and Environments of Health. BSP2020AC was held online this year due to global concerns about the Coronavirus pandemic. For the conference our speakers recorded videos, our keynotes presented live over Zoom, and we also recorded some interviews online as well. Podcast episodes from BSP2020AC are soundtracks of those videos where we and the presenters feel the audio works as a standalone: https://www.britishphenomenology.org.uk/bsp-annual-conference-2020/ You can check out our forthcoming events here: https://www.britishphenomenology.org.uk/events/ The British Society for Phenomenology is a not-for-profit organisation set up with the intention of promoting research and awareness in the field of Phenomenology and other cognate arms of philosophical thought. Currently, the society accomplishes these aims through its journal, events, and podcast. In this episode, I am hosting Selin Altunkaynak Vodina. We will talk about the gendered and racialized discourses that are reproduced during the social encounter between Syrian and Turkish women living in the South East of Turkey. Selin will start with one of the most reproduced discourses; the sexist and racist claim that Syrian women go after and “steal” Turkish husbands. The discourse, unfortunately, has been reproduced in the media in various forms. However, Selin will take a novel approach and trace such discourses as they are reproduced within the daily social encounters between Syrian and Turkish women.Selin is a PhD candidate in Humanistic Studies at Rovira i Virgili University in Spain. She is currently conducting research about the social relations between Syrian and Turkish women living in the South East Region of Turkey. While advancing on her PhD, she has been also assuming different positions within humanitarian organizations in Turkey since 2015. Her work in the humanitarian sector helped her gain diverse experiences in the areas of refugee protection and social cohesion of refugees.Selin will utilize Deniz Kandiyoti’s famous concept ‘patriarchal bargain’ in analyzing the racially charged discourses directed at Syrian women. She will argue that different images of Syrian women have caused a perceived disturbance in patriarchal order within Turkish society. Such sexualized and racialized images include Syrian women being “well-groomed”, wearing make-up and so on. Selin will reveal that in an effort to bargain with the patriarchy and sustain their own limited power within a patriarchal system, Turkish women depict themselves as dedicated mothers and wives who are better than Syrian women in taking care of their houses, children and husbands. Thus, the patriarchal bargain effectively reproduces two discourses at once; the sexualized and racialized discourse directed at Syrian women and the discourse of wifehood and motherhood as the proper signifiers of womanhood. Finally, Selin will share her candid accounts of the patriarchal bargains she had to do in order to conduct her research. As a woman researcher in Turkey, Selin had to bargain with the patriarchy on many levels for example as a daughter of a middle-class family and as an unmarried young woman conducting research on her own. She will mention how she navigated patriarchal expectations in the field and in her personal relations.

Today I delve into the short, but dense, Social Encounters chapter. Don't let the 7-page size fool you: it's packed with great information for how to socialize in Genesys. From the simple to the complex. From the quick-and-dirty encounters to the set-piece encounters. It's all here. I do have to apologize for my voice, I was getting over a head cold or something when it was recorded, so I do sound off and stutter more than usual.
