With so much going on in the world, it can be easy to forget that the men and women who serve in our military, as well as their families, continue to bear the weight of our freedom. From WWII veterans, to active duty veterans, we as Americans owe a debt to those who honorably serve. Organizations like Solider's Angels, started by the great grand-niece of General Patton, have stepped forward to offer that support, and fill in the gaps left by our government. In this episode, Soldiers Angels CEO Amy Palmer shares the history of this organization and teaches about the evolution of veterans support, the landscape of the nonprofit world, and important points anyone interested in the nonprofit world needs to know. Subscribe To The NewsletterFollow Us On All PlatformsJoin The Great American Syndicate

Once upon a time, best-selling author Loree Lough literally sang for her supper, performing before packed audiences throughout the Midwest. Now and then, she blows the dust from her 6-string to croon a tune or two for her grandkids or to sing at weddings or funerals, but she mostly just writes. Over the years, her stories have earned hundreds of industry and Readers’ Choice awards and 4- and 5-star reviews. Loree has nearly five million copies of her books in circulation, and in March 2014, she added her hundredth published book to the shelves. She has written fiction and nonfiction for kids and adults (2,500-plus articles and 68 short stories), and four of her novels have been optioned for movies. . Loree loves sharing learned-the-hard-way lessons about the craft and the industry, and her comedic approach to teaching makes her a favorite (and frequent) guest of writers’ organizations, book clubs, private and government institutions, and college and high school writing programs in the U.S. and abroad.. A writer who believes in “giving back,” Loree dedicates a portion of her income to Soldiers’ Angels, Special Operations Warrior Foundation, and several other worthwhile organizations. She splits her time between a tiny home in the Baltimore suburbs and an even tinier cabin in the Allegheny Mountains, where she continues to perfect her Critter Tracks Identification skills. She shares her life with her real-life hero, Larry, who rarely complains, even when she adds yet another item to her vast collection of “wolf stuff.”  Midwatch interviews Christian authors, artists, movie producers, indie film makers, ministers and just about anyone with a story of faith. The show is built around discussing faith and building encouragement to our listeners. Broadcasting primarily online through our servers to the world and across the USA on RevMedia Network. Her name of Mary Ann Phillips and she is a force of nature. Her mission, "to support patients medevaced to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center from Iraq and Afghanistan." Her work is so extraordinary she was one of 13 Americas, out of 6,000 nominated, to be awarded by President Obama the Presidential Citizen's Award, the 2nd highest civilian award our country has to offer. This is recognition that is truly deserved. Mary Ann is a special, special human being. An American citizen living in Germany, Phillips volunteers with Soldiers Angels at Landstuhl Air Force Base. It is always a pleasure to get the opportunity to talk with Patti Patton Bader about her amazing group of Soldiers Angels. Soldiers Angels has become a global organization of volunteers who give backs in all kinds of ways, large and small, to the men and women in uniform. A great example of their impact came through the story of Kevin Dupont from Chicopee, MA. Kevin is a 52-year old Army National Guard soldier who volunteered to go to Afghanistan. Kevin was severely injured in an IED explosion while riding in a humvee. He has suffered expensive burns and he is fighting for life at US Army Burn Center at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Kevin's friend, a Mass. State Police Sgt., emailed us about his situation. We invited him into the studio to tell us about Kevin. During one of the commericals, he Trooper tells me about all the Soldiers Angels at Brooke Army Hospital in TX and how they have reached out to the Dupont family. I was not surprised at all. There is a charitable foundation set up to support Kevin's long road to recovery. Here is the contact information. Blue Skin Foundation 256 Doyle Road Holden, MA 01520 As for Soldiers Angels, Patti told us she has more than 700 soldiers waiting to be "adopted". What does that mean? " When you adopt you are committing to sending a card or letter each week, and a minimum of 1 or 2 care packages a month. This is one of the most important things that can be done to help bring home a healthy hero; it is so very important for each of them to know they are loved and supported, and your letters and care packages prove just that. Care packages do not have to be expensive: you can put together your own (we have a detailed list of the most-requested items for you--snacks, hygiene products, and games or magazines). We have also have some exciting themed care packages in the Angel Store (they are sold at cost and shipped directly to your soldier, complete with a personal note from you)." Joining Patti was Sergeant First Class Toby Nunn who was featured in the PBS documentary Bad Voodoos War. Toby is now working as part of Soldiers Angels and focusing on soldiers who return home with PTSD issues. I can think of no better cause to support this holiday season than the great people who make up Soldiers Angels. What is Pundit Review Radio? Pundit Review Radio is where the old media meets the new. Patti Patton Bader, the founder of Soldiers Angels, joined Bruce McQuain from QandO along with Gregg and I to discuss the ongoing fundraising drive for Valour IT, an amazing project that provides voice activated laptops for our most severely injured soldiers and Marines. "As he began to recover, CPT Ziegenfuss wanted to return to writing his blog, but serious hand injuries hampered his typing. When a loyal and generous reader gave him a copy of the Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred software, other readers began to realize how important such software could be to CPT Ziegenfuss’ fellow wounded soldiers and started cast about for a way to get it to them. A fellow blogger (blog author) who writes under the pseudonym FbL contacted Captain Ziegenfuss and the two realized they shared a vision of providing laptops with voice-controlled software to wounded soldiers whose injuries prevented them from operating a standard computer. FbL contacted Soldiers Angels, who offered to help develop the project, and Project Valour-IT was born." It was so great to finally meet Patti Patton Bader, founder of Solider Angels. She is such a tireless advocate for our soldiers. When 'Armed Liberal' Marc Danzinger of Winds of Change returned from the Milblog Conference he wrote a follow-up post about that said, But an amazing crew, and a few takeaways... Soldiers Angels, Soldiers Angels, Soldiers Angels. Sign up, give money, do something. If you support the war or hate it, this incredible group of people is doing amazing work in supporting the troops in the most direct way possible. He is 100% correct. They are such an amazing group. To be around them is to become a better human being. They are angles. Please consider supporting them if you can. Reach them at SoldiersAngles.org What is Pundit Review Radio? Meeting Josh Bleillx from Greenfield Indiana was simply amazing. This young man joined the military at age 27, six years after graduating from Purdue University and starting his career. He wanted to do something more and he joined the military in 2004 knowing full well that he would be heading off to combat. Josh lost both legs at the knee in an IED explosion in Iraq about six months ago and was working hard in the physical therapy area when I met up with him. He had an infectious smile and was so upbeat about his future. The best word to describe him is inspirational. He is an incredibly impressive man. During the interview, Josh brought up Soldiers Angels and how much they do for the soldiers at Walter Reed. What is Pundit Review Radio? Pundit Review Radio is where the old media meets the new.
