Do you know why a cowboy takes his hat off before dinner? Forrie J. Smith from "Yellowstone" says it's all part of the “cowboy culture.” In this episode of "The Glenn Beck Podcast," Forrie recounts his career — from cowboy to stuntman to beloved actor — and that one time he had to track down “illegals” wreaking havoc on his ranch at the U.S.-Mexico border. He and Glenn discuss the decline in American beef, how social media has created political silos, and the transgender agenda being pushed on America's youth in public schools. “When you start messing with my children ... with my animals, you crossed a line,” Forrie says, which is why he isn't afraid to ask the questions that make most actors' knees buckle. Will the 2024 election be secure? What will be done with all the fentanyl flowing across our open border? Forrie isn't worried about what the rich and powerful think. As he says, they'll come looking for him when disaster strikes because he can “survive with a knife.” With all his success, he's most proud that everywhere he's lived he's been called a “good neighbor,” even by that one neighbor with “different politics,” who wants to relocate the rattlesnakes in the front yard when Forrie would rather just shoot them.  Forrie is an ambassador for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation: https://specialops.org/    Sponsors  Relief Factor  Relief Factor can help you live pain-free! Pike Logan is the main character in a series of sixteen bestselling thrillers by Army Veteran Brad Taylor. The 17th novel in the series, “The Devil's Ransom” was just released. The series features asymmetric warfare missions practiced by Pike Logan and the extra-legal “Task Force”. Brad served 21 years in the US Army, 8 years as a member of Delta Force. He serves as a security consultant on asymmetric threats for various agencies when he is not writing. He never had an interest in the military but when his father warned him he would have to join the military if he flunked out of school, Brad began exploring the Army and liked what he saw. When Brad was courting his future wife he told her he was going to become a Special Forces operator and write a book. His last posting was as an instructor at The Citadel, which gave him time to pursue the second goal. He shares some of the challenges he experienced trying to get published and advice for other aspiring authors. The Pike Logan series is extremely well researched. Brad and his wife travel to the locations that will be the settings for his novels.  Brad says that “being on the ground” often inspires him to add elements to the story that he originally hadn't considered. “I can't describe the culture if I don't immerse myself in it.” In one case, a hotel charged him $75 for a hamburger and a coke. THAT hotel got blown up in Brad's next book. Despite serving at the tip of the spear for so many years, Taylor emphasizes that we must not overlook the contributions of the “average grunt'. Brad and his wife are ambassadors for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. TAKEAWAY: Brad says one of the greatest challenges in writing a series is character progression. “The human condition is always evolving, my characters must do the same.”

“Leadership and selfless service in my opinion is a journey and not a destination.” - Clay Hutmacher 6ers, this episode is all about leadership, service, and humility – especially as you transition out of the military and take on new roles. Tony Nash is joined by Clay Hutmacher, a retired Army Major General and president and CEO of Special Operations Warrior Foundation, a non-profit that provides fully funded education to the children of fallen Special Operations personnel and Medal of Honor recipients. You are going to learn why leadership is a journey and not a destination and how you can be of service to others even after leaving the military. Leadership is a continuous learning process, rife with failures along the way. You will find out how a retired two-star general had to accept the fact that he would have to start as a novice again and learn from others after over 40 years of military service. In the end, this episode will make you want to do more for yourself, your family, and others. ----- 00:40 – Introduction 01:25 – Clay dropped out of high school, joined a foster home, and enlisted in the Marine Corps at 17 – which began his over four-decade career in the military. 01:37 – On how he became the CEO of SOWF after retirement 03:08 – One thing from the military that he continues to implement: recommitting himself to his mission every day. These include his family, himself, his physical health “I think renewing that commitment everyday has served me and my family well.” 03:50– He reads a lot of leadership books to educate himself. But he learned most from serving with very talented leaders like General Stan McChrystal, Admiral Bill Craven, and General Tony Thomas: “Each one of them showed me what right looked like in a different way.” 04:45 – “To really be successful as a leader I needed to take care of myself and my family.” 05:29 – His wife is his ego control officer at home. Citing her, Clay says: “Everybody at work tells you how great you are, it's my job to keep it real.” 06:21 – As he embarked on a new leadership journey outside the military, Clay says he is a novice: "I didn't understand a lot of those things, it's expanded my horizons and made me better overall by getting humbled in a new era after having retired as a two-star general.” 07:41 - On failure: “It happens daily. You're gonna fail all the time… Humbling but beneficial as well.” He says it is easy to say to be selfless but it is really hard to do it. 08:19 – “I think the old adage adversity builds character certainly is true.” 09:26 – He talks about the mission of SOWF. He says while veterans and active duty signed up for the military and its consequences, their children and spouses do not. Getting to help them is a blessing, he says. As of late, SOWF is helping 821 children – with the youngest as young as a few months old and the oldest group is college seniors. 11:51 – He clarifies that while SOWF is providing college scholarship, they are more intent on helping for the long-term: “Cradle to career approach,” where they help as early as preschool, they provide tutoring, they fund college education no matter what school the kids would like to go to, they teach time management, they shoulder study abroad programs and internships. 15:36 – In 2020, they have 41 children who graduated high school, with 38 going straight to college, two entering the military, and one who took a year off. Their college graduation rate is also at 93%. In both instances, the rates are well above the national average. 16:26 – He says he has no single big mistake that has led to success. But his series of failures have served him well in becoming a more proficient, compassionate, and humble leader. 17:03 – “I failed multiple times but I tried to be honest with myself on my failure and learn from that failure and get just incrementally better and that continues today.” 18:18 – How is he better than yesterday? Are leaders born or made? Major General Clay Hutmacher believes that leadership is a learned skill. He spent 41 years in the United States military and commanded the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment; one of the most lethal projections of combat power the world has ever seen. Precision execution is required every second of every day to assume - and succeed - at the extreme level of risk at which this unit operates. Major General Hutmacher is now the President and CEO of The Special Operations Warrior Foundation where he has dedicated his post-military career to providing education to the children of our fallen Special Operations warriors and Medal of Honor recipients. MG Hutmacher joins host Fran Racioppi, and special guest host TWG Founder and Navy SEAL Mike Sarraille, to discuss raising the standards of leadership, the importance of organizations creating expertise across functional, technical and strategic thought domains, realistic training, and the balance between mission and people when the mission calls for relentless dedication.Read the full episode transcription here and learn more on The Jedburgh Podcast Website.Highlights: -How a motto like “Night Stalkers Don't Quit” unifies an organization around a common purpose and mission.-Standards are required in any organization, but it is the adherence to the standards that separates the elite from everyone else. -Lessons on managing elite performers who have a very high operational tempo, a no fail mission and the effects of prolonged operation. -MG Hutmacher shows us how leaders evaluate risk, and how longevity and experience of an organization's personnel will allow a leader to assume more risk in their operations. -Special Operations Warrior Foundation empowers the families and children of our fallen and severely wounded Special Operators and Medal of Honor recipients. Learn how you can support their mission at specialops.org.-MG Hutmacher provides an invaluable history lesson of combat aviation in special operations throughout the world including Somalia, South America, and The Middle East. Donors, partners, and communities will unite to ensure the future success of  surviving children and families of fallen Special Operators for the next 40 years and beyond. In doing so, we uphold our solemn commitment to all Special Operations Forces as they defend our freedom and security. How we raise funds:  SOWF relies entirely on private donations to fulfill our mission and fund our programs. The Beyond Well team had extraordinary insight into the causes and potential remedies of military suicides in our conversation with New York Times bestselling author and former Special Tactics Officer, Dan Schilling.   Schilling spent more than 30 years in the military, primarily as a Combat Controller and Special Tactics Officer, though he proudly started his career as an infantry grunt. His numerous combat and clandestine deployments have taken him around the world and include Operation Gothic Serpent, popularly known as Black Hawk Down from the movie and book bearing the same name, where he is credited with saving the lives of a Ranger and SEAL Team Six SEAL while under fire. He later founded and then served as the first commander of two special operations squadrons, one of which’s name and purpose remains classified.  A purveyor of adrenaline-fueled endeavors, he holds the Guinness World Record for most BASE jumps in 24 hours (201), a feat he conducted to benefit children who’ve lost a parent in special operations through the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. He is also a pro-rated demonstration skydiver, speedwing flyer and expert skier and volunteer instructor with Wasatch Adaptive Sports, helping those with disabilities to experience the thrill of downhill skiing.   Beyond Well talks with Dan about the mental health crisis in America’s military.

Tom Quinn on the service provided by the Special Operations Warrior Foundation ~ "So whenever today, if you’re a Navy Seal, or Army Special Forces, or Ranger, or Air Force Combat Air Control, or a Marine Special Ops, you know that you have our enduring promise that we will educate your children if you don’t come home. And it gives them a great deal of confidence going in to the hotspots that they go into." Tom Quinn - Former Director, Federal Air Marshals Service and Ret. Secret Service with host Andy Ockershausen in-studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen, this is Our Town, and I have a great pleasure to talk to the great Tom Quinn today. For those of you who don't know, he is a man, the first one started with the Air Marshals. Tom Quinn led that effort to put air marshals on airplanes. Is that right, Tom? Tom Quinn Re-enters Government to Head Up New Federal Air Marshal Service Tom Quinn: That's right, Andy. I came back into government to stand up the Federal Air Marshal Service as a federal law enforcement organization, based on the National Transportation Security Act that was passed after 9/11. Andy Ockershausen: And so you had to start from scratch to hire people, to provide protection on American aircraft. Did you do any foreign aircraft too, or just US? Mandate to Grow Service from 33 to Several Thousand Security Officers Tom Quinn: Just US-flagged air carriers and there was a small federal air marshal contingent that was ... they were security officers in the FAA, very small number. On 9/11, there were 33 and that's all. Andy Ockershausen: In the whole flying industry, 33 marshals. Tom Quinn: 33. And the mandate was to create a Federal Air Marshal Service of several thousand to provide a deterrent on US-flagged air carriers, both domestically and internationally. It still is a robust organization today. Andy Ockershausen: How many marshals would there be today? Tom Quinn: The number's classified, but suffice it to say, there are several thousand operating from field offices that we created, all over the country. And their mission is essentially to promote confidence in federal aviation through the deployment of federal air marshals to detect, deter, and defeat hostile acts on aircraft, airspace, and airports. Andy Ockershausen: It must be one of the more successful ventures ever attempted by the federal government because, and maybe I'm wrong, but I don't recall any hijacking since these marshals have been in place. Monumental Task - Six Months to Get the Job Done Tom Quinn: Well, there certainly hasn't been any hijackings. They are a significant deterrent along, with the rest of what TSA does in terms of the screening. None of us like it, but it is a fact of life if you're going to fly. And the Federal Air Marshals really is the law enforcement component of that. But if you can imagine standing up an organization with a time certain. The commitment to that was made to the president, President Bush, 43 at the time, was that they would be stood up by the end of July of 2002. So from the time TSA was created, the Federal Air Marshal Service was essentially being stood up. You had roughly six months to select, hire, train, and deploy several thousand into offices that didn't exist around the country, with no leadership to speak of in terms of the numbers of- Andy Ockershausen: Nobody's ever done it before, correct? You didn'tt have any model to follow. Tom Quinn: And, you know, how do you go about ... Most federal law enforcement agencies, the Secret Service, for example, the FBI, if they had a thousand agents to hire in a year, it would be a monumental task for an established organization. We were a new organization with little or no management,

“You have to go to war with yourself before you can find peace”David GogginsI can think of no better guest to usher in 2019 than the mighty one himself.Incontrovertibly the most inspirational person I have ever met, today David Goggins returns for his second turn on the podcast — a conversation that will catapult you into the new year with the tools and hard truth you need to chase huge dreams, shatter personal limits and transform your life wholesale.Often referred to as the hardest man alive, David is the only member of the US Armed Forces to complete SEAL training (including three Hell Weeks), the U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Enlisted Honor Man) and Air Force Tactical Air Controller Training. But David is perhaps best known for his superhuman feats of strength and ultra-endurance.After several of his friends died in a 2005 helicopter crash while deployed in Afghanistan, David honored their memory by tackling the most difficult endurance challenges on Earth to raise funds and awareness for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides college scholarships and grants to the children of fallen special ops soldiers.Hence began a most unexpected yet remarkably storied athletic career as one of the world's most accomplished endurance athletes. Highlights include:* 2005: ran 100 miles in under 24 hours on no training;* 2013: world record for most pullups in a 24 hour period (4,030);* 2007: 3rd place — Badwater 135 – a 135 mile ultramarathon across Death Valley widely considered to be the world’s most difficult foot race;* 2006: 2nd place — Ultraman World Championships, a double-ironman distance race widely considered to be the world's most difficult triathlon;* 2007: 1st place — 48-Hour National Championship endurance foot race, where he ran 203.5 miles, beating the previous record by 20 miles; and* 2007 – 2016 — additional top finishes at dozens of the world's most grueling endurance races, including The HURT 100, Leadville 100, Western States & more. But David’s greatest accomplishment isn't athletic. It's self-mastery.From day one, David has faced a concatenation of seemingly insurmountable obstacles – poverty, psychological and physical abuse, obesity, learning disabilities, asthma, sickle cell anemia, and even a congenital heart defect that often left him competing — and winning — on a mere fraction of his actual physical capabilities. It's a scenario that would have buried the best of us. And yet, against all odds, David conquered them all, and ultimately found a way out. It's the story of a man who transformed pain into obsession and, phoenix-like, rose from a state of utter desperation to take complete ownership of his life and total command of his mind to manifest a most extraordinary life.David's implausible journey is laid bare in his recently released memoir, Can't Hurt Me* — one of the most honest, powerful and impactful stories of hardship, redemption and personal perseverance I have ever read. Certain books instruct. Others inspire. But it's the rare read that holds the potential to reframe your sense of personal capability and completely change your life. This book does just that — a statement I don't make lightly. I highly suggest See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I don’t think all types of quitting are bad but the question is do you quit when it gets tough — even when you know it’s the right thing for you. I used to quit and whine a lot, but I’ve learned that to get things done you have to push through the difficult times. Remember, there is always a solution to your problem. 3. How well trained are you for the type of life that you want? This point stuck out to me. You heard how in the Navy SEALs they train through hellish circumstances. Although we will never see combat, we will face situations that will test us. And here’s the question, how well trained are you for that?   What an incredible story!
