Send Bite Me a Text!A devastating ice storm transforms into a profound lesson about resilience, community, and finding comfort in the chaos when nature unleashes its fury. What began as routine storm preparations quickly evolved into a harrowing ordeal filled with falling trees, powerless nights, and unexpected moments of connection.Living with my 93-year-old father during this crisis revealed both vulnerability and strength. Unable to use his usual entertainment sources and restlessly wanting to help despite physical limitations, he showed me how isolation affects our elders – especially when he admitted having no nearby friends to turn to. Yet together we found unexpected joy in adversity: heating pizza on the propane fireplace, wearing toques indoors, and sharing stories by flashlight while rationing my precious cannabis supply. The storm illuminated humanity's dual nature. While some frustrated citizens berated exhausted hydro workers, others exemplified extraordinary kindness. Team Rubicon – veterans volunteering for disaster response – cleared massive debris from my father's property without charge. Neighbors we'd never met checked on each other, friends opened their homes for showers and phone charging, and workers from multiple provinces labored tirelessly to restore power. This experience reinforced why I created the Bite Me Cannabis Club – because community matters profoundly, especially during life's storms. Like cannabis itself, human connection provides essential comfort in challenging times. Join our community at JoinBiteMe.com and share your own stories of finding light in unexpected places.Support the show Visit the website for full show notes, free dosing calculator, recipes and more.

//The Wire//2300Z January 16, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: CALIFORNIA RECOVERY EFFORTS CONTINUE. INCIDENT IN GEORGIA CAPITOL BUILDING RESULTS IN ARREST OF SENATOR.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -HomeFront-California: The Los Angeles wildfires continue as firefighting efforts make gains overnight. Recovery efforts have also continued to expand. Team Rubicon, a veteran-led humanitarian organization has expanded volunteer efforts into San Pedro and Riverside County, in addition to the initial efforts in Pacific Palisades. Regional food banks have continued increased requests for donations to meet the increased demand for services. The World Central Kitchen has also established approximately 20 sites offering hot meals throughout the Los Angeles area.Georgia: This morning scandal erupted following an incident on the House floor. Senator Colton Moore was arrested following him carrying out his duties as an elected official during the joint session.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In Georgia, Senator Moore had been previously banned from entering the House floor by House Speaker Jon Burns, who banned him from entering because Senator Moore did not support naming a building after former Speaker Ralston. Sen. Moore, while speaking his disapproval for this naming of a structure a few weeks ago, allegedly made offensive comments about the late former Speaker Ralston, who was previously embroiled in scandal for allegedly abusing his power as Speaker to protect predators and conceal illicit behavior. Because of his remarks on this matter, Senator Moore was banned from the House floor. However, following the incident it appears as though Senator Moore was indeed allowed to be present during a joint session being held on the House floor, which is what led to him attempting to gain entry as his duties mandate. As such, the activities pertaining to Senator Moore of Georgia are largely being considered by many to be beyond the pale of civilized society at large, much less that of an allegedly democratic political system. One elected official banning a peer from their place of work for comments they made last year is generally not in keeping with any sort of normalcy. However, the law enforcement officials loyal to Speaker Burns were more than willing to not just enforce Burns' orders, but also allowed Senator Moore to be physically assaulted by bystanders in the process.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//
//The Wire//2300Z January 13, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES PARTIALLY CONTAINED, HIGH RISKS REMAIN DUE TO WEATHER FORECAST INDICATING HIGH WINDS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -HomeFront-California: Red Flag fire warnings remain in effect as the potential for high winds remains a risk for the next few days. As of this morning, the Kenneth, Lidia, Woodley, Archer, Olivia, and Sunset fires have all been contained. The Palisades Fire continues to spread, and remains 13% contained. The Eaton Fire was reported as being 33% contained as of this morning. Evacuation zones remain in effect for both the Palisades and Eaton fires, which has led to conflict among locals looking to return to their homes. However, as the fire danger remains high, many evacuation zones will probably remain in effect for several more days.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Throughout Los Angeles, looting and arson incidents remain frequent and largely random. Despite most roads and ingress routes into the evacuation zones being closed to through traffic, malign actors have largely not been discouraged from mass theft. The theft problems have compounded evacuation efforts in many areas, as many people do not want to evacuate their homes if they know looters will move in immediately after they leave. Of note, the LA County Sheriffs Office has confirmed that so far at least 30x people have been arrested for looting, including an unknown number of looters that disguised themselves as firefighters in order to gain entry to evacuation zones.Regarding recovery operations, some aid groups are beginning to organize disaster relief efforts. As Los Angeles is a regional hub for many social welfare programs, most of these programs continue in the unaffected areas. However, real-world, disaster-specific aid is also beginning to form, largely by private companies. For instance, Elon Musk has pledged to deploy a small fleet of Cybertrucks with free wifi access throughout the city. The LA Regional Food Bank is also seeking volunteers and donations as their resources likely will be depleted by the increased demand for services. As the fires are still burning, and likely to flare up if the weather forecast is accurate in the assessment of high winds this week, actual boots-on-ground professional disaster relief operations are largely only being carried out by Team Rubicon at the moment, who are already deployed to Malibu and seeking volunteers to help with food and supply distribution (details on how to help in the links below).Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

November is Native American Heritage Month - a time to celebrate the beauty of indigenous cultures. Not only do we recognize the tremendous positive significance of Native people in this country, but we also remember the mistreatment of Native communities that continue to fight for recognition, equality, and peace. We recognize that parts of the Hillsboro School District are located on the traditional lands of the Atfalati Kalapuya, the indigenous people of this area. According to Kalapuya tradition, the people were created here, and they have lived here since time immemorial. Indigenous people still live here today, having persevered through war, displacement, genocide, and oppression. We humbly honor the ancestors of the indigenous peoples for being the original stewards and protectors of this land. We want to take this opportunity to recognize and highlight the rich and diverse cultures of Native American, Alaska Native, and Indigenous communities this month and beyond. Visibility Saves Lives (Visibilidad Salva Vidas) can be seen as the first step to establish and maintain relationships with our Native students and staff. Our educators have access to lessons and resources to help them integrate and elevate Native American, Alaska Native, and Indigenous cultures year-round. Visit our website for information about related events taking place throughout November. Our featured staff member is Glencoe High School special education assistant and Unified Sports coach, William Johnson. All of our HSD staff members are great, but some truly go above and beyond to the point where they could justifiably be called heroes. Such is the case for William, who is also known as “Maverick.” He has been volunteering with a disaster relief organization called Team Rubicon for the past seven years. Over the course of his service, he has been deployed more than 30 times to support communities all over the country in their recovery efforts after hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and other emergencies. Read more about Maverick's volunteer journey in his own words, and join us in saying: way to go, Maverick - you make us Proud to be HSD! First quarter ends on Thursday, October 31, and there will be no school for all students on Friday, November 1, as teachers have a work day and prepare grades. School resumes on Monday, November 4. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. Please also bookmark our district website: hsd.k12.or.us to stay informed about what's happening in our district and schools.

Team Rubicon has been in operation for 13 years, during which time they have worked in 1,100 different disasters or crises across the country and around the world. The premise of the organization is that military veterans have great experience that can be applied in a disaster relief context and that the military culture and ethos – a bias for action - is attractive to a much broader base than the veteran community. In this classic episode of Logistics with Purpose, Kristi Porter and Maureen Woolshlager are joined by David Burke, Chief Programs Officer at Team Rubicon and a Marine Corps veteran. In his current role, he spearheads Team Rubicon's efforts to scale up the delivery of disaster services and life-saving humanitarian aid through safe, effective, and meaningful staff and volunteer implementation. Former President Trump narrowly avoided an assassin's bullet. America is on edge. And it feels like we're all dodging news bullets every day. These are incomparably trying times in America, many are divided, and everyone is concerned. Biden's campaign continues to disintegrate—and so does international confidence in US leadership and American morale. The most important, most violent and most divisive election of our lifetime rolls on. And we're all starved for leadership and inspiration. Paul Rieckhoff breaks down this moment, and the most important and latest news, including the evolution of American support for Ukraine, what real American toughness looks like, and what's coming next. And, he tears into all of it with a powerful and inspiring conversation with the smart, impressive and dynamic Jake Wood (@JakeWoodTR). Jake's a social entrepreneur, Marine Corps combat veteran, author and CEO of Groundswell, an innovative new company that democratizes corporate philanthropy and empowers employees to take action. He's also the co-founder of the disaster relief powerhouse non-profit Team Rubicon. And, he's a former sniper and he breaks down the assassination attempt and the catastrophic chain of events that allowed it to happen. He's giving you a sniper's eye view into the Trump shooting, the latest from the campaign trail, the national competition between profit and values, and what's to come this summer and fall environmentally that will require more disaster relief than any time before. How a ragtag band of volunteers launched a global disaster relief organization after Haiti's devastating earthquake in 2010(0:04) Kelly Anne Ruda, a retired travel agent and teacher, unexpectedly becomes a valuable member of Team Rubicon, a veteran-led nonprofit assisting disaster-affected communities. Despite lacking typical disaster-relief skills, Kelly embraces the challenging work of hauling debris and using a chainsaw during her deployments, finding fulfillment in contributing to Team Rubicon's mission.(4:37) Initially started by military veterans in response to the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti, Team Rubicon grew from a small group led by Bro. Jim Boynton, SJ, to a global organization that includes diverse volunteers and provides disaster relief around the world. (9:33) Bro. Jim describes leading volunteers and medical professionals treating victims during the first hours and days after the earthquake, bandaging wounds and responding to overwhelming needs. (13:43) Seeing and treating so much pain, Bro. Jim talks about the need for volunteers to decompress and find fraternity among themselves. He describes his appreciation for the military veterans who lent their skills to the effort.(17:25) After the earthquake, word about the group's efforts spread. Bro. Jim talks about where the name “Team Rubicon” came from, and how in the years after the earthquake, the effort to respond to natural disasters around the world quickly expanded.(24:33) Gary Gamble, a 62-year-old Marine Corps veteran, talks about his experiences since joining Team Rubicon after the flooding in the city of Detroit in 2021. (29:09) Kelly talks about the unity felt among members of Team Rubicon, whose grey shirts serve as a visible sign of their fraternity and common mission. Although the work is exhausting, she says, it's an unmistakably rewarding experience to help those who've suffered regain their lives. She talks about what makes it all worth it.Reporting by Daniel Meloy; narration by Gabriella Patti; script by Casey McCorry; production by Ron PangbornThe love of family is forever. Nonprofits are often stuck in the status quo of fundraising, inching along towards their revenue goals and slashing programs and budgets along the way. What if we changed the question to: “What if we had no choice but to double our revenue over the next three years with half the resources, half the human effort, half the budget? How would we do it? Go.”This is the question that my guest aims to answer. Matt Scott is CEO of CauseMic and the author of The High Growth Nonprofit: Proven Steps to Quickly Double Your Revenue and Drive Impact. During Matt's seven years at Team Rubicon, he took the organization from $275,000 in annual revenue to $51 million. In this episode, Matt and I discuss: Why reframing your organization's growth mindset is the first step in doubling your nonprofit's revenue in three years or less. How nonprofits can make a better case to donorsThe power of a one-page strategic planWays to convince your board to embrace and implement bold ideas and thinkingAbout Matt ScottBesides being an early riser, Matt Scott is the CEO and Co-founder of CauseMic, a Portland-based consultancy helping nonprofits leverage the best-in-class for-profit methods to grow their organization. From the heart-wrenching tale of Sue Johnson, a retired Army veteran and an adoptee from Vietnam, to the candid accounts of veterans grappling with PTSD, this episode is a tapestry of stories that explores the power of forgiveness, the journey of self-discovery, and the resilience of the human spirit. Sue's riveting story offers an insightful glimpse into the essence of identity and the significance of giving back. The episode further unravels narratives of veterans, their battles with their past, and how supporting each other provides a unique therapeutic comfort. The episode later takes you along the Camino de Santiago, a path of reflection and healing that mirrors the veterans' journey towards inner peace. Through the lens of this 713-kilometer trek, we explore the importance of solitude, self-analysis, and the courage it takes to lay down one's burdens. There's a deep dive into the world of a chef-volunteer at Team Rubicon, a disaster relief organization, and the sense of fulfillment derived from serving others. The episode's third act focuses on mental health of veterans. Here, we tackle the unique struggles female veterans face in a predominantly male environment, as Sue returns to shine a light on these challenges. We contemplate the hidden indicators of a veteran's cry for help, the essential role of therapy in untying past traumas and the significance of addressing childhood experiences in therapy. Concluding the episode on a hopeful note, we highlight the power of awareness, the importance of taking small steps towards positive change, and the impact of creating a ripple effect of change in the world. “We're recording this in mid-2023,” host Shane Tenny says. “Already, there have been more mass shootings in our country than there have been days in the year. We're pacing about 330 mass shootings as it's often defined, which is atrocious.”Hearing these numbers is jarring and figuring out how to solve this problem is downright daunting. Where does the solution begin? On this episode of the Prosperous Doc®, our host Shane Tenny, CFP® welcomes Dr. David Callaway to discuss the complex issue of gun violence in America. Dr. Callaway brings a distinctive perspective to the conflict, approaching it from the standpoint of a physician, a veteran, a gun owner, a law enforcement officer, a father, and a leader in his community. Dr. Callaway is an emergency medicine physician at Atrium Health in Charlotte, North Carolina, the region's only Level I trauma center. He's been practicing medicine for about 20 years and served as a physician with the United States Navy and the Marine Corps, as well as in Iraq with a mobile surgical unit. After leaving active duty in 2005, Dr. Callaway spent the bulk of his career working on security and violence-related issues with law enforcement and now serves as a sworn Task Force officer with US Marshals. Needless to say, he has extensive experience with guns, violence, and the law. Together, Shane and Dr. Callaway needle through tough gun violence topics. Dr. Callaway shares his beliefs in coalitions and the importance of getting everyone to agree on a single issue.Tune in to hear about Dr. Callaway's belief in gun safety and gun ownership accountability as two of the first steps to be prioritized in combating gun violence.
Volunteering improves psychological well-being. Team Rubicon has researched this positive effect, not just on the communities it serves, but also on the well-being of its 170,000 volunteers. The organization applies military expertise and speed to provide fast response and social support to those who have suffered a disaster. We learn from David Burke and Patti Norberg about the many benefits they have found with volunteering. David Burke is the Chief Program Officer at Team Rubicon, an organization that was founded by US armed forces veterans in 2010 with the purpose of voluntarily joining together to work on missions in the aid of regular citizens who are suffering because of natural disasters. Patti Norberg PhD is a Professor of Marketing at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, and also a good friend of Tim Houlihan. Team Rubicon is a veteran led humanitarian organization that serves people before, during and after disasters and crises. It's a movement of thousands of people that work domestically and internationally from mitigating the effects of fires, floods and natural disasters. They are instrumental in missions to rebuild people's homes, surge medical capacity and provide clean water. From the offset, the purpose of Team Rubicon was not just to help disaster survivors, but also to support veterans' well-being after leaving the military. And Team Rubicon goes one step further by actually researching the effects on well-being and mental health. Kurt and Tim discuss the findings from this research and how it is shaping the ongoing work of Team Rubicon. Topics (4:37) Welcome and speed round questions. (6:56) What is Team Rubicon?
