We got a real one on the show this week. A Chi town legend, author, journalist and the man with one of the coldest nicknames in the game, Robert “Scoop” Jackson. Unfiltered is the best way to describe this episode as Scoop sits down with Will and Arthur on Hoop Dreams The Podcast to dive deep into his origin story, from growing up in South Shore, where he still lives today, to hooping all over the city of Chicago. His mother's focus on education for her children led to him going to four different grammar schools by the time he was in grade 8, which means he basically went to school with everybody! He talks about the power basketball can provide for youth and how his love for the game, combined with the confidence his mother instilled in him, helped him to fit in and make friends when he was the new kid at a new school. Scoop reflects on his mothers integrity and compassion for kids in the neighborhood and the influence that had on him growing up. He shares stories about his days at Xavier University and receiving a Masters in Arts degree from Howard. His passion for writing, basketball and hip hop eventually led to a career as a journalist covering sports for publications such as SLAM, ESPN, The Source, Vibe, USA Today and many others. Nike even commissioned him to write Sole Provider: 30 Years of Nike Basketball chronicling the inside story of Nike and its influence on the sport. Sit back and strap in for Part 2 of what will go down as a classic Hoop Dreams episode.

"Today I am a single mother of an 8 year old young man lol. I will be the first to admit with being a single mother comes challenges. I, Chawnika Sanders, am the sole provider for my son. His reality right now is he is being raised in a single parent household. Some days I want to take a break and just stop the routine that has become apart of our everyday lives. Not to do anything but lounge around and throw up a middle finger to the constant fast forward of our on the go everyday living. Because mama has to work. Of course I don't because I have to save time for those days when, out of no where, our world is interrupted by the things that are out of our control." - Baby Mamas we got this. When our world is interrupted take a moment to yourself. You deserve that much. Let your child know when you are overwhelmed. They will appreciate it and understand. Kids don't come with instructions. You won't get everything right. Today, with you I stand in the chaos that has become our lives!!" - Chawnika Sanders: Strong as a Mother --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

If you know anything about animals, you know that you shouldn't ever get between a mother and her children. Whether it be a bird, a moose, or a bear, they will protect their young with a ferocity that would scare anyone. They're ferocious because they know there can be real threats out in the world. The trouble is, some threats aren't just out for the animals, they can be for us too. Luckily, we also have our protectors. It can be our parents, siblings, our friends, and maybe even others. Whoever it is, they help us face the world with confidence so we can succeed. Here on The Apple Seed we are bringing you stories about people who protect others or protect themselves through many means. We have stories from Sheila Startks, Antonio Sacre, and a Song by Ryan Shupe. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“Gerald the Giant” by Sondra Singer from Stories of Rhythm and Fantasy (15:12)Our first story comes from Sondra Singer, a member of the Rocky Mountain Storytellers, and The National Storytelling Network. It's about a giant named Gerald. He's a kind giant who lives with a community of dwarves as their protector. As much as Gerald loves his dwarf neighbors, he gets kind of lonely without the company of someone else like him. When another giant comes through their neck of the woods, however, Gerald has to decide whether the giant is a threat or if she really just needs a friend. “Sole Provider” by Ryan Shupe from the Saga of Sanpitch (3:56)Who better to protect us than our parents? Not only do they protect us from danger, they also protect us from hunger, cold, sadness, and many other types of pain. They support us when we are in need, and help us reach our full potential. Unfortunately, not everyone's parents are this way, but we hope that everyone with children strives to be. Coming up is a song about parenthood, called “Sole Provider”. Now, this talks mostly about a father, but we know that both mothers and fathers can be providers. “Dog Outsmarts the Leopard” by Sheila Starks Phillips from Family, Friends, and Other Fun Folks (3:19)Sometimes, when there is no one else, you have to protect yourself. We've all seen Disney's Tarzan fight a jaguar and win, but what if you didn't have to fight What if there was another way out? Well, maybe there is. In this story, our friend dog has the answers on how to defeat a leopard using nothing but wit and quick thinking. “Uncle Tom and the Rollercoaster of Death” by Antonio Sacre from Uncle Tom and the Rollercoaster of Death (20:54)Antonio Sacre is a storyteller who grew up in a Cuban, Irish, American family. With that blend of culture came a lot of good stories. But Antonio wasn't always good at stories. When he was young, he had to practice a lot to get the hang of it and still does. In this story, he tells how he began storytelling and some of his favorite stories about his uncle, Tom.
Have you ever heard the phrase "you do not have because you do not ask"? God is our Sole Provider and He WANTS to give us our daily "bread" (the main essentials needed to live this life). All we have to do is ASK Him. That's what prayer does for us. Today, Pastor Jeff continues his line-by-line teaching of The Lord's Prayer, with this week's focus on its 3rd line and the importance of asking God to provide our daily bread. David Whelan, the Director of Legal Information & the Great Library Society of Ontario, discusses his recent article "The No Legal Research Provider Landscape," and how lawyers, law librarians, and the legal industry looks at legal information services. Do you need to have multiple resources like Westlaw, LexisNexis, Bloomberg or others, or can you get by with just going with one (AKA "Sole Provider.") Do you even really need to go with one of the big services, or can you survive off of the resources provided by the local bar association? Or are there even fewer options for solo small firm environments? David covers this, plus when things are "good enough" for some lawyers to feel comfortable in their practice. And, how that usually runs counter to law librarians and other practitioners who would never be satisfied with "good enough." De-Stressing the Law Students During Finals We skip Information Inspirations this week to have a little fun. Anyone who has gone to law school knows that finals time can be stressful. We reached out to a number of law schools to ask them what they do to help students reduce their stress levels during this time. We get some great answers from: The University of Georgia University of San Diego University of Illinois Tulsa University University of Arkansas Little Rock Villanova Richmond Yale Thanks to all of these schools for sharing. There's some great programs going on at all of these schools. We have a few more who left us messages today, and we'll make sure to get those on the next show. If your school is doing something to reduce the stress levels of law students, call us on the Geek in Review hotline at 713-487-7270 and leave us a brief (30 seconds or so) voice memo, and we'll get it on next week's show. One of the things we learned from Yale's Law Library Director, Teresa Miguel-Sterns, is that New Haven apparently does have excellent pizza. Marlene, with her New Jersey skepticism says that she's going to have to try that out first hand. So look out Connecticut... In American society and around the world traditionally men have been expected to be the BREADWINNER, if not the SOLE PROVIDER, for their families. As the WOMEN'S RIGHTS movement grew legs in the 1950's more American women entered the workforce and the traditional role of the man as the provider has been challenged ever since. Some suggest this issue of being the sole provider has have never applied within the BLACK COMMUNITY since the Black woman has been working alongside the Black man since enslavement. Others argue the cycle of SINGLE PARENTS homes has produce a generation of AFRICAN-AMERICAN men who no longer look to be PROVIDERS within the family unit. Special guests COACH DEMECOS & YIEH SASAEKPO drop by to give their very different perspectives on the role of a man as a provider. What if the woman makes more? Can the man's ego handle it? Will she truly respect him? MENTAL DIALOGUE asking the questions America's afraid to ask.
