How does an integrative approach to living “the good life” - one that blends mental, physical, and spiritual development — help to unlock new levels of human potential? That's a big question. To help us answer it, I am honored to welcome one of my own mentors to the podcast for this week's conversation – Dr. Cristina Versari. Cristina is a pioneer in the world of sports psychology and the president of the San Diego University for Integrative Studies. She is renowned for her work mentoring athletes, executives, and high performers using an innovative approach to performance and personal growth. In this conversation, we discuss how Cristina's near-death experience shaped her perspective on growth and resilience, how she teaches her students using a “business-minded” approach, and so much more. We are all navigating challenges – whether it's anxiety, grief, financial challenges or simply the pressure to perform. Cristina offers a refreshing perspective that's grounded in integrative psychology. I'm really excited for you to learn from her insights…. And to learn a bit more about me along the way. When your career starts to itch, you gotta scratch it, according to Randi Roberts. After spending 30 years in the corporate world in big pharma, Randi had a variety of roles from sales representative to Executive roles. She is a hippie at heart, Ivy League education, an MBA earned from San Diego University, and is now an Executive and Career-Life coach. During her time with Big Pharma, she loved it and yet knew there was something more for her to do.  Randi shared some tips with us to help us start to identify when that itch begins, sometimes its subtle and other times it can be out right smack in the face, but we should pay attention when we start to feel or begin to:Hit the snooze button more regularly on workdays.Pay attention to how you are reacting to situations.Listen to your body talk, what is it trying to show or tell you? How and where are you out of alignment?More irritated by projects, team members, etc.Energy is low. These are just a few to pay attention to and recognize that often it can be situational, or maybe your focus and goals have changed. The key here is to pay attention. We also discuss some of the current trends happening in the workforce. It used to be known as the 7-year itch and now it's more like every 3 years people change their jobs but remember, “no matter where you go, there you are” so figure out what is making you itchy at this time before you make a big move. And know that it's not forever. This too shall pass but being intentional and mapping out where you want to get to, is an important exercise to go through and that is often where a coach can help you to figure that out.  Think about how important growth is to you and what that might look like as you navigate your map. What's next and what is your risk tolerance in all aspects of your life? If you want to better understand your own leadership, visit our website at www.wilempowered.com and take our free leadership quiz. This gives insight as to where you might want to focus some of your intentions on your own development.  #confidence #wilempowered #careermap #wiltalk #selfawareness

Bodies are Telling is a two part exploration of the often complex relationship between the body and the self, told by Jimanekia Eborn through an intimate, personal reflection of her own journey to self-discovery. What are the psychological effects of growing up in a body that is constantly objectified? How do outside influences and expectations impact the way we perceive ourselves? What does it mean to reconnect to our body and heal after experiencing sexual assault? This started out as a podcast discussing bodies that have been impacted by shame and guilt. But it turned into a candid sharing of deep truths; an examination of personal trauma and what it's like to come out on the other side. While also calling in others' journeys and ideals around their own bodies, this is a story that, sadly, many will listen to and be able to connect with, but, hopefully, it is also a story that many can discover a place of understanding, realisation, and, ultimatley, hope. TW: This series mentions sexual assault and eating disorders. More about Jimanekia: Jimanekia Eborn is a Queer, Sexual Assault & Trauma Expert, Trauma Media Consultant, and Comprehensive Sex Educator. Purpose and Petri Dishes (ft. Garry Ridge)On humility in leadership and growing a cultureOPENING QUOTE:“Ask yourself this question. Why do I believe what I believe? Are you really scared of something, or is it because you are making up the story in your own mind?”- Garry RidgeGUEST BIO:Garry Ridge is CEO of WD-40, having joined in Australia in 1987. He became head of the company's Asia and Australia efforts in 1994 and CEO in 1997. Since joining the company, he's expanded the company globally and broadened the product range— all while building an organization that is still true to its founding values. Additionally, he's written several books on leadership and is Adjunct Professor of Leadership at San Diego University and an executive coach.Show Links:WebsiteLinkedInTwitterCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[2:38] - The Three Most Powerful WordsOn the role of humility in leadershipGarry often says that the three most powerful words a CEO can say are “I don't know.” Why? “We just have to be authentic in our heart, be tough minded but tenderhearted. Heart of gold, backbone of steel.” Being a leader doesn't mean having all the answers. It means acknowledging when you don't, and empowering the people around you to help find them.[14:33] - What to Look for in an OrganizationYou escaped a bad job. Now what?Garry has advice for anyone who has joined the Great Resignation (or, as he calls it, the Great Escape) and is seeking their next organization. “Number one, does the leadership openly admit that people matter? Can you feel that? Number two, is there a clearly defined purpose in the organization that actually attracts you? Number three, is there a set of values that are clearly defined? Number four, is there an atmosphere of not failure, but learning? Finally…is there a command and control atmosphere, or a coaching atmosphere?”[20:07] - The Person I Want to BeWhat's on your list?Garry keeps a note taped to his computer that reads, “Am I being the person I want to be right now?” The question is, who is that person? Make a list of the traits you want to possess and live out in your day to day life. Grateful? Caring? Whatever they are, make sure you know them consciously. Then spend each day living those traits.[31:26] - Creating Culture…in Science ClassCulture is as much about what's not there as what's thereAs a child, Garry grew bacteria cultures in a petri dish. When toxins appeared, they had to be removed quickly or they would make the cultures go bad and fail to grow. In company culture, the goal is the same. You have to enhance what's in there that you want to remain, and take out what shouldn't be there as quickly and effectively as possible.RESOURCES:[0:56] History of WD-40[1:23] The One Minute Manager[1:28] Helping People Win at Work[8:27] “The Soul-Sucking CEO”[19:55] The Earned LifeFollow Garry:WebsiteLinkedInTwitterFollow Paul:Keynote Speaking WebsitePlaymakers PodcastThe Power of Playing OffenseLinkedInFacebookTwitterInstagramYoutubeSHOW PARTNER:The WHY InstituteAre you ready to find your ‘why'? We are happy to be speaking to another inspiring leader in our industry today! Vince LaRuffa is the Senior Vice-President of Resort Marketing at the Universal Orlando Resort. He is joining us today to share his experience and offer some great advice.  In this episode, Vince talks about what he did during the pandemic, how he leads his team, work-life balance, and how he used to be an amazing drummer!  We hope you enjoy listening to our conversation!  Vince LaRuffa's bio: Vince LaRuffa, Senior Vice President of Resort Sales and Marketing, has been with Universal Orlando Resort since 2003. He is responsible for the achievement of on-site hotel revenues and integrating the eight on-site hotels into all appropriate Universal Orlando messaging and programming.   Vince holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and a Masters in Tourism and Hospitality from the Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at San Diego State University. With a combined 35 years of Hospitality Sales and Marketing experience, he has worked with a variety of brands including, Renaissance Hotels, Marriott Hotels, and Crestline Hotels and Resorts. Before Universal, he served as Vice President, Convention Sales, and Services for Visit Orlando. Vince currently holds professional affiliations with MPI (Meeting Professionals International) and HSMAI (Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International) and served for five years on the MPI Foundation Global Board of Trustees, including a term as Chairman. He has also served on the International Board of Directors with MPI.  He is a past board member of Canine Companions for Independence, Past Chairman of the Universal Orlando Volunteer Board, and served as Chairman of the Universal Orlando Foundation Charity Classic since 2007. Vince was recognized in HSMAI's Top 25 Most Extraordinary Minds in Sales & Marketing, in Biz Bash's Most Influential People in Events, and as a Smart Meetings Supplier of the Year. Vince has been married for 29 years to Jennifer Kuehl LaRuffa and has three daughters, ages 27, 23, and 19.   An unusual way  Vince found his way into the hospitality industry in an unusual way. One day, while selling office equipment in downtown Philadelphia, he had a 300-pound copier on a pushcart, and it started sliding off. Vince ended up in the gutter with the copier on his lap when an old friend walked by. She told him that she was working as a catering manager at a new hotel in Philadelphia and mentioned that they had an opening for a small group salesperson. Vince applied for the position, and after three or four interviews, he landed the job.  A true passion For the first time in his professional life, Vince realized that he had a true passion for hotels and hospitality! He worked hard and was able to move quickly through the ranks. He ended up taking a transfer to Orlando as a salesperson at what is now the Renaissance, across from SeaWorld.  A great team A new General Manager came in and took over. He and Vince bonded and formed a strong relationship. He took Vince with him as he progressed through the organization, all the way up to Senior Vice-President of Operations. As he moved and advanced, so did Vince. They formed a great team, and Vince worked his way up to Regional Sales and Marketing. Moving on Marriott bought the company, and Vince stayed on with them for about a year. After leaving Marriott, he took a position in Atlanta with the Stormont Trice Corporation as their VP of Sales and Marketing (it later became Crestline Hotels and Resorts.) Later, Vince took a position as VP of Sales and Services with Visit Orlando, and eighteen months later, he became the VP of Resort Sales at Universal and remained there for the next eighteen years. Three years ago, he was promoted to Senior Vice-President of Resort Sales and Marketing.  A unique and evolving environment Vince has found the environment at Universal unique. In eighteen years, Universal has evolved from a regional theme park business to a destination resort. Intellectually challenging Vince finds his work at Universal intellectually challenging, and he enjoys leading his team, which is a tightly-knit group. Together, they have marshaled the growth of the organization and helped transform it into a full-blown vacation destination. Vince LaRuffa is a lifelong learner Vince LaRuffa received his Master's degree when he was in his fifties. He had a full-time job and a family to take care of at the same time. He was motivated to do it because he enjoyed it so much! A new vocabulary Vince was hiring kids out of school with Master's degrees, at the entry-level to management. He realized that there was a vocabulary that he had not been exposed to, so he wanted to continue learning and growing intellectually.  The San Diego University Program Last year, Vince was asked to teach the Marketing Communications class for the San Diego University program. He and one of his colleagues in Orlando created the curriculum for the class. He will also be teaching the Marketing class for the Hospitality and Tourism Master's Program going forward. Dealing with the pandemic The pandemic was dealt with differently in Florida and California, even though both destinations share the same leadership. Vince felt that Universal managed the situation sensitively and well, even though some difficult decisions had to be made around eliminating some of the staff members.  A proactive approach The company took a proactive approach, and the safety and wellbeing of their team members and guests were at the forefront of every decision made.  Record levels In the last two months, they have had record booking levels and a record number of calls coming into their guest contact center.  A proud leader Vince is proud of how the leadership team at Universal handled the pandemic and treated all their team members. He is proud to be part of the leadership team.  Thoughtful and strategic leadership As business leaders, you cannot control all the variables. However, you can be thoughtful and strategic about how you approach the opportunities that come your way. Navigating the change The leadership group at Universal decided to come back after the pandemic with a hybrid model. That means that Vince and many other team members will be going into work, but not every day. They will try that model out for some time to see if it works over the long term.  Face-to-face Vince has learned the value of being face-to-face with his coworkers and misses it.  Working remotely Many people don't need much team interaction and prefer to work from home. For Universal to be competitive as an employer and attract the best talent, they will need to employ some people who live far away and allow them to work remotely. That is the trend, and the team at Universal has already proven that working remotely can be done effectively.  What Vince LaRuffa says about work-life balance Although Americans are very productive, Vince feels that there is a lot we can learn from Europeans about work-life balance. The value of volunteering The value of a network is not to be underestimated. As a young person, volunteering is an excellent way to expand your network. It is also a great way to prove your effectiveness as a leader.  Effecting change The only way to effect change is to be part of the solution, and the only way to be part of the solution is to get involved. Get involved with the chapters  If you are interested and want to make a difference, you have to do it from a platform. Vince encourages young people to get involved with the chapters because they are where all the magic happens. The chapters are the essence of organizations like MPI.  A drummer Vince loves music! Although he is retired now, he used to have lots of fun as a member of a rock band. One year, he brought in The Guess Who to perform at an event in the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel and became friends with one of the band members, a singer and guitarist. Later, Vince and some of his musician friends had the opportunity to back him up. The real joy for Vince LaRuffa For Vince, the joy in his business is accomplishing things with other people and then sharing the success.  Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website Connect with Vince LaRuffa On LinkedIn

Starting your own business with little to no knowledge can only get you so far. To see your vision through, you need business development strategies in place.  In this episode, Jon Margalit shares the things he learned in his entrepreneurship journey. He discusses the importance of building the best team by hiring people with strong values. Jon also talks about what it takes to be an entrepreneur. He emphasizes the need for innovation and creativity. Along the way, entrepreneurs should also know how to identify and pitch to investors. It comes down to knowing your product, your customer, and your investor.  If you are interested to learn some successful business development tips, this episode is for you. Tune in and apply some of these to your business today! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Find out how Jon effectively merchandises his goods to big retailers. Explore essential strategies in building your team. Learn more about raising capital and attracting investors for business development. Resources Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future by Peter Thiel The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses by Eric Ries Interview with Brad Martineau Some resources where you can find angel investors:   Pasadena Angels Tech Coast Angels Orange County Angel Network Archangels Investors Crunchbase AngelList Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Episode Highlights Jon's Background At an early age, Jon recognized that he didn't want to work for anyone. Jon's first attempt in business was when he spent $5,000 for a sandwich shop. After two weeks, he found himself cleaning the bathrooms and making sandwiches. Running this business has taught him to be cautious in choosing opportunities in his life. If you want to buy a brick-and-mortar business, observe the traffic that's going into the business. Listen to the full episode to know how Jon was able to turn the business around and sell it.  The Key to Business Development Business development won't happen if you don't have the people driving it. To accomplish this, pay yourself less or equal to the amount you pay to those you hired.  You will eventually earn more in the future; sacrificing early on is the key.  In the early period of your business, take the profit and invest it back into the business.  By doing so, you invest in your team members. They, in turn, will buy into your vision.  The Definition of an Entrepreneur Jon explains that somebody who tries to start a business without turning a profit yet is just canoeing. Jon emphasized that entrepreneurs should initiate things.  Jon differentiates this from business owners who buy a franchise. They didn't have to do marketing, branding, and product development. A true entrepreneur is somebody who creates. They identify a problem and innovate a solution. Building the Best Team Jon believes that references and resumes are irrelevant. What he does is conduct extensive interviews with applicants. Salespeople usually like the colour green. Jon observes that candidates who identified one of their parents as their role models had better values. They were successful and stayed with him for a long time.  When Jon built a finance business, he looked for people who had strong values, understood people's needs, and were good listeners.  Justifications on Sharing Profits For Jon, the only thing that matters in a business is sales. As you undergo business development, see which areas you can use to generate profit. You need to add more revenue streams and profit centers to the business. Next, crack the code in marketing by conditioning your buyers to spend money on as many places as they can. Listen to the full episode to learn how integrating a dry cleaning spindle increased the sales in Jon's sandwich shop.  Acquiring Capital for Business Development Jon shares that investors want to see you stretch money to get traction. They want to know if the entrepreneur has a way to address and minimize the risks. If an investor sees that you have a well-oiled machine that has yielded profits, they'll be more confident that you can grow.  You need to be methodical when dealing with money. Test out what works and what doesn't in small chunks.  Remember to report your financials to your investors.  How to Pitch to Investors Jon shares that he raises money for his business by cold emailing angel investors on LinkedIn. “You don't want to miss out on this.” Jon uses this phrase to attract investors. Attend as many networking events as you can.  Look for angel networks in your community.  Join pitch competitions. You know your business if your pitch is 3 minutes or less.  More Tips from Jon For Jon, keeping rejected emails as notes is a huge motivation. There was an instance where an investor outlined his reasons for not supporting Jon. He kept this in a folder with other rejections.  Jon looks forward to when he can email those who said no and say that they missed out.  Getting into Retail In major and big-box retailers, it is important to understand your audience. The key is to create a concise pitch deck or product deck.  You write an email to your buyers about your next big product. Instead of marketing your product to the big retailers, focus on how you can sell the product to their customers. You need to know how to merchandise correctly. Learn the specific details in the full episode. Making Slides to Get into Retail You attach the slides to the emails you send to the big box retailers. The slides contain your product, the problem, the solution to the problem, and merchandising.  In this instance, you're showing that your product can solve a problem that a target group has.  5 Powerful Quotes “You can have a great business model; you can have a great business plan; you can have a great idea. But if you don't have great people executing, it means nothing; it's worth zero.”  “When you take that money, and you put it right back into your people, it will pay back 100 fold. I promise.” “I feel that the true entrepreneur is somebody that innovates, somebody that creates, somebody that disrupts what's going on, not somebody that jumps in the stream that's already going one way and just start swimming with it.” “You want to spend the least amount of money possible and get the most traction. And just because you get funding, that's not a green light to go spend money. It is in a way as long as you're methodical about it and you do your testing in small chunks that are controlled.” “And I have a folder in my email that says, you know, ‘Nos,' and putting those nos in there. And I do it for a reason. It's because it's so much motivation.” About Our Guest Jon Margalit is the founder and CEO of Togally.com. After working with the Seattle Seahawks, the Director of Player Engagement for the Seahawks had this to say about Lainie Hodges and Improv Alchemy, "Imrpov Alchemy rapidly removes the walls that may exist between players, allowing the group to make connections and build relationships more quickly." This perfectly represents why Bobby wanted to grab a cup of coffee with Lainie. Lainie Hodges is the founder of Improv Alchemy and the second guest focused on the power of improv. A Denver native, Lainie earned her bachelor’s degree in Health and Exercise Science from Syracuse University, she earned a master’s degree from the University of Denver and she studied Sport Counseling at San Diego University for Integrative Studies. Lainie studied improvisation at the Magnet Theater (NYC) and Grafenberg Productions (Denver). Her experience includes developmental work within public school systems, private business, criminal justice, and professional athletics. This episode is quintessential 50 Cups of Coffee. Bobby spends much more time on this episode on Lainie's journey than planned. Her journey is fascinating! And deeply informative. Lainie has served as a Performance Training Consultant for athletic teams at every level of sports, she served as the Player Engagement Coordinator for the NFL working at their corporate offices in NYC (you will love learning how she got that job) and then set out to start her own performance coaching company working with NFL teams such as the Seahawks and the Ravens as well as countless other organizations. To check out her work head on over to lainiehodges.com. Season 2 is dedicated to the late Coach Ashley Riggs, a UNC tar heel, National Champion, captain under our opening guest for Season 2, Anson Dorrance and friend of the Audley family. Just 3 months ago, Ashley passed away after a long battle with cancer. In honor of Ashley, an annual award is being set up through the UNC Women's Soccer program. This award will be presented annually to a player that demonstrates hard work, perseverance and fight. Monies will also go to sponsoring high school teams and players who otherwise may not be able to afford to attend UNC soccer camp. Donations can be sent to: Educational Foundation (Women's Soccer) PO Box 2446 Chapel Hill, NC 27515 Checks can be made out to Educational Foundation (Women's Soccer) and be sure to put Ashley's name in the memo line. Criminal Behaviorology The Exploitation of Crime: Crimesploitation and the Media Misuse of Reality Crime Stories Paul Kaplan, PhD and Daniel La Chance, PhD, two experts on cultural criminology, have written on Crimesploitation, where reality programs create a kind of folk wisdom about crime, addictions and correctional work. The dangers of this kind of portrayal, the popularity of these shows and the possible hidden agenda in the development of such entertainment form the basis of this episode. I interview Paul Kaplan to discuss his work on crimesploitation, and cover the different forms of this intriguing phenomenon being broadcast on television programs and internet podcasts. Show Highlights: - What is crimesploitation and how can we distinguish it from other kinds of educational programs on crime, corrections and addiction? Is the nightly news an example? What about this podcast!? - The two likely target audiences of crimesploitation. - The irony of Neoliberalism and Law and Order Punitivism. - The “Addiction Industrial Complex.” - Does crimesploitation subtly justify police misconduct, aggressive law enforcement tactics and even vigilante justice? - How the program To Catch a Predator, a popular show nationwide, came to its own abrupt end in a case of “punitive burnout.” - How such voyeuristic broadcasts may promote an escape from social responsibilities in our modern world. - When discussing cases of the wrongly convicted, how the emphasis should be on more than just finding out who is innocent, but instead on the preservation of the rights of criminal defendants. - Death as a taboo topic and why it is a factor in our interest in the macabre. David Whelan, the Director of Legal Information & the Great Library Society of Ontario, discusses his recent article "The No Legal Research Provider Landscape," and how lawyers, law librarians, and the legal industry looks at legal information services. Do you need to have multiple resources like Westlaw, LexisNexis, Bloomberg or others, or can you get by with just going with one (AKA "Sole Provider.") Do you even really need to go with one of the big services, or can you survive off of the resources provided by the local bar association? Or are there even fewer options for solo small firm environments? David covers this, plus when things are "good enough" for some lawyers to feel comfortable in their practice. And, how that usually runs counter to law librarians and other practitioners who would never be satisfied with "good enough." De-Stressing the Law Students During Finals We skip Information Inspirations this week to have a little fun. Anyone who has gone to law school knows that finals time can be stressful. We reached out to a number of law schools to ask them what they do to help students reduce their stress levels during this time. We get some great answers from: The University of Georgia University of San Diego University of Illinois Tulsa University University of Arkansas Little Rock Villanova Richmond Yale Thanks to all of these schools for sharing. There's some great programs going on at all of these schools. We have a few more who left us messages today, and we'll make sure to get those on the next show. If your school is doing something to reduce the stress levels of law students, call us on the Geek in Review hotline at 713-487-7270 and leave us a brief (30 seconds or so) voice memo, and we'll get it on next week's show. One of the things we learned from Yale's Law Library Director, Teresa Miguel-Sterns, is that New Haven apparently does have excellent pizza. Marlene, with her New Jersey skepticism says that she's going to have to try that out first hand. So look out Connecticut... Government Action on Legal Information Emily Feltren, Director of Government Relations at the American Association of Law Libraries, gives us a monthly update on what the government is doing in regards to advancing access to legal information. As immigration from Mexico to the United States grew through the 1970s and 1980s, the Border Patrol, police, and other state agents exerted increasing violence against ethnic Mexicans in San Diego's volatile border region. In response, many San Diego activists rallied around the leadership of the small-scale print shop owner Herman Baca in the Chicano movement to empower Mexican Americans through Chicano self-determination. The combination of increasing repression and Chicano activism gradually produced a new conception of ethnic and racial community that included both established Mexican Americans and new Mexican immigrants. In Raza Si, Migra No: Chicano Movement Struggles for Immigrant Rights in San Diego (University of North Carolina Press, 2017), Jimmy Patino narrates the rise of this Chicano/Mexicano consciousness and the dawning awareness that Mexican Americans and Mexicans would have to work together to fight border enforcement policies that subjected Latinos of all statuses to legal violence. By placing the Chicano and Latino civil rights struggle on explicitly transnational terrain, Patino fundamentally reorients the understanding of the Chicano movement. Ultimately, Patio tells the story of how Chicano/Mexicano politics articulated an abolitionist position on immigration–going beyond the agreed upon assumptions shared by liberals and conservatives alike that deportations are inherent to any solutions to the still burgeoning immigration debate. Jimmy Patino is Assistant Professor of Chicano and Latino studies at the University of Minnesota. His broader research and teaching interests include Comparative Ethnic Studies, Chicano/a-Latino/a History, diaspora/transnationalism/borderlands, social movements and political mobilizations, and Cultural Studies.
