We got a real one on the show this week. A Chi town legend, author, journalist and the man with one of the coldest nicknames in the game, Robert “Scoop” Jackson. Unfiltered is the best way to describe this episode as Scoop sits down with Will and Arthur on Hoop Dreams The Podcast to dive deep into his origin story, from growing up in South Shore, where he still lives today, to hooping all over the city of Chicago. His mother's focus on education for her children led to him going to four different grammar schools by the time he was in grade 8, which means he basically went to school with everybody! He talks about the power basketball can provide for youth and how his love for the game, combined with the confidence his mother instilled in him, helped him to fit in and make friends when he was the new kid at a new school. Scoop reflects on his mothers integrity and compassion for kids in the neighborhood and the influence that had on him growing up. He shares stories about his days at Xavier University and receiving a Masters in Arts degree from Howard. His passion for writing, basketball and hip hop eventually led to a career as a journalist covering sports for publications such as SLAM, ESPN, The Source, Vibe, USA Today and many others. Nike even commissioned him to write Sole Provider: 30 Years of Nike Basketball chronicling the inside story of Nike and its influence on the sport. Sit back and strap in for Part 2 of what will go down as a classic Hoop Dreams episode.

Greg is also responsible for meeting with team owners, managers, coaches, and other individuals to develop rapport and partnerships promoting the organization and the clients GNA represents. Much of his day is spent in contract negotiating, working with athlete sponsors, networking, speaking with other professionals and keeping abreast of current trends and information that may affect decisions the organization and agent recommend to the clients. He cemented the bond between Nike and key players, teams, and coaches through attention to service detail, personal relationship building, basketball knowledge, and intuition. Nared negotiated contracts managed marketing and advertising campaigns. He was promoted in 1995 to work as the Product Line Manager for Nike Basketball, consisting of men's, women's, and Jordan apparel. Two years later, he was promoted to work as the Business Affairs Manager for Tiger Woods. Cohen arrived on The Farm prior to the 2016-17 season, after serving as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt for two seasons. He helped guide the Commodores to 40 combined victories and postseason berths in his two years in Nashville. Vanderbilt won 19 games and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2015-16. Prior to Vanderbilt, Cohen was an assistant coach at Harvard. During the 2013-14 campaign with the Crimson, he helped guide the program to its fourth straight Ivy League title, an NCAA Tournament appearance, and program records for overall victories (27) and conference wins (13). He helped develop several All-Ivy selections, including Player of the Year Wesley Saunders. Cohen broke into coaching during the 2012-13 season, serving as an assistant coach at Rice. He oversaw the Owl's recruiting efforts, where he recruited all-conference and all-academic selection Marcus Jackson. Stanley Lumax is the founder of African Chop House, which celebrates African culture through good food, music and people. As a professional marketer and a photographer - Stanley’s also worked with Nike Basketball, the NBA, Converse, Beats By Dre’. Growing up in a Ghanaian household, Stanley combines all of his experiences to ignite the African Diaspora together. His latest endeavor is the restaurant Teranga, a Harlem-based Pan-African restaurant led by celebrated Senegalese Chef Pierre Thiam. In a candid conversation about giving back to our heritage (and homeland), Stanley challenges us to think about how we live in a society that is not always welcoming. But ultimately, he believes that all people of color are stronger together - as fighting separately keeps us from reaching our goal of eradicating inequality faster, together. That was a really powerful statement because here we are all around this diaspora becoming successful in doing amazing things - and I think it's important that we don't forget the need to look towards the continent. And for some of us that might be a lot easier than others and. For others, it may be more idealistic. Who is Estaban Weaver? If you remember the name then this one will give you chills. For those of you who don’t then this is a story that you definitely need to take the time to learn about. We always hear about the High School phenoms such as Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady and LeBron James. Estaban Weaver got more hype than any of these Hall of Fame names at a younger age. He was known as the "King of Ohio", invited to the Nike All American camp as an eighth grader, held a press conference as an eighth grader to announce his High School choice, and he was the number one ranked High School player nationwide as a freshman.Weaver was an absolute magician with the basketball. With the lift on his left-handed jumper, the no-look passes, hypnotizing spin moves, defensive intensity, and electric bounce; there was nothing on the basketball floor that Estaban couldn’t do. We are beyond honored to have him on the show today to hear more about his story and his amazing documentary titled “WHO IS ESTABAN.” We had such a great time learning more from the legend himself. He is such a high character guy, and the peace and love he still has for the game of basketball is something that we truly admire. He has the respect and love from both former and current NBA players as well as the whole city of Columbus OH, and that's something that money can never buy. His legacy is still very well respected by his peers and honestly, we believe his legacy is just getting started. Thank you Estaban Weaver!

Long-lasting and mutually beneficial Brand Partnerships are built based on the deep understanding of the different parties. In this 2-part episode, we talk shop with Glenn Chin, a respected brand executive in the sports and gaming industries, who has held leadership positions at EA Sports and Nike, amongst several others, where he helped launch and marketed some of the most iconic sports videogames in our era, such as Madden and NBA Live, or launched sports & tech products like Nike+. He also led the Global Brand operations of Nike Basketball, around the time of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the “Redeem Team”, as well as luring into the Nike stable NBA superstar Kevin Durant. Nowadays Glenn runs his own brand strategy consultancy firm, Most Prolific, where he continues to develop great creative ideas in the apparel, eSports, tech and sports industries. The story of Glenn, who is a friend and a mentor, is perhaps also the story of all of us here at The Connect too. All of us got introduced to the sports industry by playing the sports we love, whether that is basketball, baseball or soccer. Each of us had hopes of having a pro career, but when we realized that this was not an option, we simply could not stay away from the sports industry. What you'll learn about in this episode: How a traumatic situation early in Kevin's childhood taught him how to compartmentalize and to move on from something no matter how bad that particular situation is to us in our own individual lives. Where Kevin's calling to coach came from and why it is so important to him. What Kevin means by the brilliance is in the preparation” and how Ray Allen exemplified that statement? Why is it so significant to understand the difference between My Best vs. The Best? What does it mean to “be there before you get there” as a leader? How did the word Ubuntu drive the Celtics and where did Doc Rivers come up with that word? What was Doc Rivers ‘statement that made a statement' at the start of the 2007-2008 and what was three things was Doc able to get from his team when he made that statement? What are the three dimensions of success? What did all the great ones whom Kevin has coached…from Kevin Garnett to Ray Allen, to Paul Pierce, to Lebron James to Kobe Bryant to Kevin Durant….. have in common and how is that the foundation of his book, Why the Best Are the Best, 25 Powerful Words That Impact, Inspire, and Define Champions?
