¡Hablamos de ‘Up From The Bottom’!

Bonnie Ora Sherk began her career as a landscape painter, but then realized she wanted to be in the landscape herself. From the nucleus of that idea, her 1970 installation “Portable Park,” a popup farm complete with sod, trees, and farm animals situated under a San Francisco freeway overpass, was born. As she observed, “Freeways are beautiful, but they need to be softened. Why use them just for cars?” Sherk, who died in 2021, spent her career transforming “dead spaces” into lived experiences like gardens, farms, and trails, all meant to engage audiences by showing them the wonders of the overlooked world around them. Today she is considered the godmother of urban reinvention, gardens, and the parklet. We'll talk about a new retrospective of her work with curators and artists who have been inspired by her. Guests: Tere Almaguer, environmental justice organizer, Poder - Almaguer works with Hummingbird Farms, a seven-acre urban farm in San Francisco Frank Smigiel, director of arts programming and partnerships, Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture; former curator, SF MOMA - Smigiel helped bring the Bonnie Ora Sherk retrospective to Fort Mason Tanya Zimbardo, curator, "Bonnie Ora Sherk: Life Frames Since 1970" John Bela, urbanist; artist - Bela has created a garden space in conjunction with the Bonnie Ora Sherk retrospective at Fort Mason. Bela is also a partner at Urban Field Studio, a Bay Area urban design collective Rae Alexandra, staff writer, KQED Arts & Culture; creator and author, "Rebel Girls from Bay Area History" series

The integration of AI technologies with Adobe software has set the creative world on its head. To get a read on this hot-button, rapidly evolving field, we tapped two generations of tech wizardry—Scott Kelby, the original Photoshop Guy, and retouching powerhouse Kristina Sherk. We sat down with both of these experts at B&H's 2023 Depth of Field Conference in February 2023. Our first guest is Scott Kelby, the original Photoshop guy, who discusses the good and the bad of AI technology, from how it helps create workflow efficiencies to the potential for costing some photographers a job. Kelby envisions a future comprising high-end pros and serious iPhoneographers. With this in mind, we delve into the growing advantages of capturing images on a mobile device, while also identifying subjects that still require more robust gear. After a break, Kristina Sherk shares details about the powerful AI selection tools integrated into the Classic and Mobile versions of Adobe Lightroom, which are disruptive in a good way. Stay to the end for her story about saving the day for a wedding photographer whose sharp focus was disrupted by a rogue officiant, who stepped in front of the lens just before a couple's first kiss. In today's episode, we have a familiar face back in the office, Steve Sherk from Sherk's Guide Service. Steve spends more time in the woods in one year than most hunters do in 10 years. Steve runs over 250 trail cameras in the Pennsylvania big woods every season has has learned a few things about summertime buck movement and how it coorelates to hunting season movement. We discuss: Late summer excursions by bucks provide insights into their fall range and food sources. Cutting tracks in conjunction with camera footage can help identify specific deer locations. Move around and shift camera positions to keep up with changing browse patterns. Stay updated on changes in habitat and browse sources, especially in public land areas that are constantly evolving. Lack of moisture can result in lower quality browse and affect the production of fall food sources. Be aware of the feeding patterns and the one-time opportunity to eat certain plants. Monitor antler growth and look for clues in weather patterns, such as increased moisture, which can spur growth. Factors like precipitation and weather conditions can influence antler growth in deer. Video mode on trail cameras offers more information than photo mode. Maintaining trail cameras during the summer is crucial to ensure they are not obscured by vegetation and remain functional. Monitoring food sources, like acorns and apple crops, can help predict deer movement during hunting season. Spend time glassing young clear cuts, as they can provide excellent food sources and attract deer. And So Much More! Hey everyone, welcome to episode 140 of the Antler Up Podcast! On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Steve Sherk from Sherks Guide Service. Steve resides in Western PA where he hunts the big woods of PA. The last time Steve was on the podcast we had a ton of topics regarding buck hunting tactics. Well round two is finally here after a year. Steve wrapped up a two year trail cam data study which he shared on the Exodus Podcast with our friends Chad and Cam. We get Steve to share hunting strategies for specific weeks, finding bucks after the shift and so much more! We wrap up the conversation with Steve answering a few listener questions. Thanks to Steve for coming on again and sharing a ton of great content!! To start things off in the podcast Steve shares what to focus on coming into the early season and how bedding plays a major role in this. Follow this up by chatting about shifting cameras, and when he doesn't shift cameras because he doesn't want to disturb specific buck areas. A question came up about not only how Steve tracks buck shifting areas, but does as well and his philosophy on shooting a doe early or not. Then Steve shares his strategy regarding the three C's (Cover, Cold Fronts & Cameras). It was awesome to hear some techniques and stories regarding the three C's. Then the meat and potatoes of the podcast Steve breaks down how he would hunt each time frame of the big woods and ties in his trail cam data study for this period. So much great info in this episode and Part 2 of Buck School with Steve as a freaking blast! Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up! Learn more about your ad choices.
