Steve starts off by talking about his massive trail camera studies he has done over the past 5-6 years which now has 120+ cameras collecting data in the big woods of northern Pennsylvania. Steve has found that across multiple different types of locations such as bedding areas, scrapes, feeding areas, and transitions one thing has been consistent- big bucks move in daylight when weather conditions are right. Steve aims to choose his hunting days when the weather is right and tries to do the same with his clients. We talk about trail cam strategies and things we have seen and learned about deer movement from them which transitions us into some stories about attempting to use trail cam data to attack specific bucks and how most of the time, unsuccessful plans are the greatest teachers. Steve shares two unsuccessful attacks last season and we talk about how huge of a role acorns can play not only in deer movement, but rut activity and shed antlers dropping also. Steve Sherk of Pennsylvania joins me on this weeks podcast. In today's episode, we have a familiar face back in the office, Steve Sherk from Sherk's Guide Service. Steve spends more time in the woods in one year than most hunters do in 10 years. Steve runs over 250 trail cameras in the Pennsylvania big woods every season has has learned a few things about summertime buck movement and how it coorelates to hunting season movement. We discuss: Late summer excursions by bucks provide insights into their fall range and food sources. Cutting tracks in conjunction with camera footage can help identify specific deer locations. Move around and shift camera positions to keep up with changing browse patterns. Stay updated on changes in habitat and browse sources, especially in public land areas that are constantly evolving. Lack of moisture can result in lower quality browse and affect the production of fall food sources. Be aware of the feeding patterns and the one-time opportunity to eat certain plants. Monitor antler growth and look for clues in weather patterns, such as increased moisture, which can spur growth. Factors like precipitation and weather conditions can influence antler growth in deer. Video mode on trail cameras offers more information than photo mode. Maintaining trail cameras during the summer is crucial to ensure they are not obscured by vegetation and remain functional. Monitoring food sources, like acorns and apple crops, can help predict deer movement during hunting season. Spend time glassing young clear cuts, as they can provide excellent food sources and attract deer. And So Much More! Hey everyone, welcome to episode 177 of the Antler Up Podcast! On this week's episode I was joined by PA native Tyler Wilbur. Tyler and I had a fun conversation about a variety of whitetail topics. These topics included his success this past year, how that will help him for this upcoming season, learning from Steve Sherk and how his scouting is evolving. We cover some more topics that I believe will fire you up for this whitetail season! The main topic of this episode is don't leave anything to chance. Get out there and scout, prepare by shooting your bow, go over past intel and be ready for when that moment comes! Kicking this episode off, Tyler introduces himself and what is currently in the works for him. It was great to get a chance to hear Tyler's story from learning from his father and now getting a chance to learn from Steve Sherk to hunt the big mountain bucks here in PA. We get into what specifically Tyler is looking for when scouting and hunting. We get into the importance of looking into the smaller details to set yourself up for success. This past season was also a rollercoaster type season for Tyler in that he was after a real good mature buck and had his chance but ultimately missed his opportunity. We chatted about how he didn't let this back luck shot tear him down and instead come back from that and kill another great buck. We get into a heck of a lot more in this episode and hope you enjoy this one! I appreciate Tyler for coming on and having this conversation with me. Check it out and let us know what you think! Hey everyone, welcome to episode 140 of the Antler Up Podcast! On this week's episode Dimitri and I were joined by Steve Sherk from Sherks Guide Service. Steve resides in Western PA where he hunts the big woods of PA. The last time Steve was on the podcast we had a ton of topics regarding buck hunting tactics. Well round two is finally here after a year. Steve wrapped up a two year trail cam data study which he shared on the Exodus Podcast with our friends Chad and Cam. We get Steve to share hunting strategies for specific weeks, finding bucks after the shift and so much more! We wrap up the conversation with Steve answering a few listener questions. Thanks to Steve for coming on again and sharing a ton of great content!! To start things off in the podcast Steve shares what to focus on coming into the early season and how bedding plays a major role in this. Follow this up by chatting about shifting cameras, and when he doesn't shift cameras because he doesn't want to disturb specific buck areas. A question came up about not only how Steve tracks buck shifting areas, but does as well and his philosophy on shooting a doe early or not. Then Steve shares his strategy regarding the three C's (Cover, Cold Fronts & Cameras). It was awesome to hear some techniques and stories regarding the three C's. Then the meat and potatoes of the podcast Steve breaks down how he would hunt each time frame of the big woods and ties in his trail cam data study for this period. So much great info in this episode and Part 2 of Buck School with Steve as a freaking blast! Hope you enjoy this episode and look forward to next week! Antler Up! Learn more about your ad choices. Not many hunts are harder than pursuing big-woods whitetails on public ground. In this episode, Steve Sherk of Sherk's Guide Service in Pennsylvania discusses his lifelong passion for pursuing mature bucks on the public, offers tips for locating bucks in areas of vast timber and explains how he used his know-how to build a business that offers a unique opportunity for hardcore bowhunters willing to embrace the ultimate whitetail challenge!
In today's episode, we have a familiar face back in the office, Steve Sherk from Sherk's Guide Service. Steve spends more time in the woods in one year than most hunters do in 10 years. Steve just completed a multi-year trail camera study, looking at pictures from over 150 trail cameras to see if he could find a pattern to when and why big bucks daylight. We discuss: - What he learned about deer movement from looking at multiple years of trail camera photos - His trail camera strategy for 100,000 acres of Pennsylvania big woods public land - His most successful trail camera locations for daylight photos of big bucks - Short-term vs. long-term trail camera sets - The one day that he had the most daylight pictures of mature bucks - What factor did he notice in his study that had the most influence on daylight buck activity - Should you look at the weather, moon phase, or barometric pressure when targeting mature bucks - How much Pennsylvania's bear season affects deer movement during gun season - What he looks for in October that spikes daylight buck activity - How droughts can affect where in hill country deer move to - When do mature bucks typically show back up after the lockdown And so much more. This is one you won't want to miss! Whether it's preparing for a new hunting season or taking the time to understand your target buck, there are many things to take into consideration. This time of year we're setting up cams, planting food plots, and really studying how deer move around their habitat. On this week's episode we have returning guest Steve Sherk, hunting guide for his very own Sherk's Guide Service. Steve has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to whitetail deer, and shares some of his very own tactics and strategies on how to locate and understand those big mature bucks. On today's episode of the DIY Sportsman Podcast, we're talking summer scouting and strategies once again. This time, I'm talking to Rendell Erik who hunts primarily public land located in Iowa. This is a good contrast to the episodes I posted with Steve Sherk since the terrain is different. However, you'll still see similar tendencies in many cases for what deer are doing throughout the summer months and how to capitalize and maximize your intel. We talk about boots-on-the-ground scouting versus minimizing intrusion, running trail cameras, where to place them, how often to check them, whether it's better to cluster them or spread them way out, mock scrapes, glassing, and even how to start to transition some of the intel into early season plans. On today's episode we have Round 2 of taking to Steve Sherk from Pennsylvania as a guest. In the last episode with Steve, the discussion focused more on summer scouting and trail camera strategies. In today's episode, we're taking that information and transitioning into fall. Steve starts out with the story of his buck last year, how he used information from scouting to capitalize, and even how he shifted his strategy according to what he was seeing amongst multiple bucks he was following. Then we also talk about other fall hunting strategies, scrapes, clear cuts, ground set ups, and mature buck tendencies surrounding weather and time of year that Steve sees consistently repeat themselves. On today's episode of the DIY Sportsman podcast, Steve Sherk is on as the guest. Steve guides deer hunters in the vast national forest land of Pennsylvania and gathers annual observational data from a huge multitude of trail cameras in addition to visual sightings from boots on the ground scouting year round and hunts in the fall. Steve and Garrett finally met in person for the first time recently at a Spartan Forge retreat. With summer right around the corner, Garrett asks Steve about scouting and trail camera tactics specific to the summer months. Steve doesn't have agriculture around in the areas he hunts, but the deer do have other summer food sources which are heavy draws in the summer months leading up into the early fall. They discuss those food sources, where and how to place cameras for inventory, how far a buck might shift from summer to fall, whether or not to dive into the bedding areas and fall hunt locations, how Steve sets up his cameras and whether he does any protection for ants or bears, how often to check cameras, observational sits, and what to do if you get a single picture of a new big buck and want to take the next steps to honing in your search and learning more about his patterns going into the fall. In this episode, Jon Teater of Whitetail Landscapes discusses with Steve Sherk of Sherk's Guide Service the process of finding big buck sheds. Jon discusses his recent shed find folly. Steve and Jon discuss how to hunt sheds, versus just find sheds, especially in the big woods. Shed hunting can be just as rewarding for some hunters and targeting a specific buck and their sheds can lead to excellent data for the following year. Steve discusses mistakes that shed hunters make and Jon identifies specific habitat features that support winter preferences to help attract deer to the areas we can hunt. Jon explains how a client has gone from no sheds to over a dozen based on the strategies that he employs on his property. Steve discusses timing of antler casting and how the winter can dictate a good or bad shed season. Jon explains why deer drop their antlers. Unexpectedly, Steve explains that tough winters lead to better shed hunting. Listen in to all the shed tips and tricks Steve and Jon use to be successful. Steve and Jon end with a future saga and give insight into upcoming podcasts where Steve will be breaking down his target deer for next year. This week the guys discuss Steve Sherk's latest article, 'The Target Shed,' where he talks about targeting a specific buck's sheds and how to use the information to hunt him the next season.
In this episode, Jon Teater discusses with Steve Sherk of Sherk's Guide Service how to break down a mature buck from start to finish. Steve has developed hunting tactics that work year in and out for him and his clients. Historical trail camera data and sticking with a deer through the years, and understanding his preferences ensures success down the road. Other topics such as how deer acclimate to changes, socially or otherwise, in their environments is critical to knowing where they will reside throughout the year and getting ahead of them during hunting season.Developing a plan to harvest a mature deer is only as good as your ability to locate them, collect data and thoroughly evaluate their movements. Jon and Steve talk about summer and fall ranges, and how there are misnomers, especially when a hunting property is designed correctly. Of course, deer may change their movements and their general patterns at any time, so it's vital to evaluate a deer's physical needs throughout the year.Steve's process and concept of clustering cameras and knowing a big buck's behavior as they shift movement from early fall to breeding periods allows him to build a database of information that supports his hunting approach and ability to target mature deer. Steve is focused on big woods movement, but the strategies as discussed will apply to most locations. Steve explains that it is important to not get discouraged and hunters' agenda to hunt should be linked to when deer are consistently using areas. Further, understanding the whys behind deer movement is crucial. Steve ends with some great suggestions on how to break down a mature buck's area and how he killed a giant Pennsylvania buck during the rut.Social LinksSherk's Guide Service – Guided Deer Hunts (sherksguideservice.com)Sherk's Guide Service - Home | FacebookSteve Sherk Jr. (@sherksguideservice) • Instagram photos and videoshttps://whitetaillandscapes.com/https://www.facebook.com/whitetaillandscapes/https://www.instagram.com/whitetail_landscapes/?hl=en

On this week's episode we interview the Sherk that more people are familiar with; Steve Sherk that is! As we progress into winter and put boots to the ground this post season, it is never too late to be considering trail camera strategies for 2022. More often than not, I've personally found myself overwhelmed by vast big-woods landscapes and trying to place myself within archery range of a mature deer. Steve discusses the method behind his madness when scouting for trail camera locations, as well as how he positions multiple cameras for in-season monitoring versus data collection for future seasons. The northern half of Pennsylvania is not typically known for high deer densities. But if you have followed Steve on social media for any length of time, you know that there are plenty of mature deer with racks respectable anywhere in the lower 48 states. Clustering cameras in and around known bedding and transition areas may allow you to capture more images in these big woods settings, especially when funnels and attractions are less pronounced. Pay close attention, as this could be your step closer to connecting with a shooter on a large public land tract! Pennsylvania Woodsman is Powered by Simplecast

This week the guys are joined by our first ever guest Steve Sherk to discuss public land hunting. Steve is the owner and operator of Sherk's Guide Service in the mountains of Pennsylvania. He is also an outdoor writer, whose work can be found in publications such as North American Whitetail. He is a wealth of knowledge on the subject matter. Enjoy.
In this episode, find out how Steve Sherk of Sherk's Guide Service gets his mature buck data right after hunting season. Steve is notorious for killing mature deer and helping his clients find success. Steve is a big woods hunter that pursues deer on public land in Pennsylvania and New York, his tactical and purposeful approach to evaluating and understanding deer movement and establishing a process to harvest deer will translate to your hunting. Steve and Jon discuss deer habitat and what preferences exist this time of year and where to scout. Sometimes conditions allow for double the data and will put you closer to understanding what deer will be doing next season. Also, we dive into Steve's scouting process, how he picks apart his hunting areas. Figuring out what deer have survived the hunting season is the first step. Evaluating the areas deer use and defining home ranges first, then forecasting core ranges to help narrow down and dial in where these deer want to be during hunting season. The use of trail cameras is essential to Steve's process, his technique of clustering and analyzing trail camera data fuels his success. Steve's ability to get intel all year long and his focus on scouting over 300 days a year, and his focus on learning about specific deer movement and usage of areas seasonal supports his continued success in the big woods.
