This week in Episode #693, Wayne talks with Stephan Franck, an acclaimed cartoonist and award-nominated animator, writer, and director! He has a Kickstarter underway for both Romance in the Age of the Space God and Palomino! Stephan is quite the accomplished creator, and his Kickstarter is for his stand-alone graphic novella called Romance in the Age of the Space God and his Ringo-Award nominated crime mystery Palomino. Here's how both are described: “Part Sci-fi thriller,  part slice-of-life, and part political satire, Romance in the Age of the Space God drops us into a world not unlike ours, where things once thought impossible have happened. Also, a captivating neo-noir crime mystery, Palomino begins in 1981 Los Angeles, where we meet Eddie Lang, an old-school, hardboiled former Burbank PD detective juggling his six-nights-a-week gig in the Palomino house band, his P.I. business, and his teenage daughter--who might even be more hardboiled than he is!” We explore both creations, who the various characters are, how these stories came to be, and also talk about an important project I'm particularly fond of that Stephan helped bring to the big screen. Be sure to back this excellent comics project before it concludes on Monday, June 6, at 2:59 a.m. EDT. Guest Host Heath Fodor interviews Stephan Franck! This spring, the acclaimed cartoonist and award-nominated animator, writer, and director Stephan Franck (of Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, The Iron Giant, and Marvel Studios' What If...?) is returning to his passion project Palomino, a neo-noir graphic novel series set in the lost culture of Los Angeles' country music clubs. Franck and his company, Dark Planet Comics, are returning to Kickstarter to crowdfund volumes 2 and 3 of the planned 4-volume graphic novel series. The prelaunch page for Palomino Volumes 2 and 3 is now live on Kickstarter. Set in Los Angeles in the year 1981, Palomino is perfect for fans of mysteries, hard boiled dialogue, music, lived-in slice-of-life, and Los Angeles' weird and forgotten history. The American Century is running on fumes, but the end isn't anywhere in sight. The cowboy is still America's most central symbol—and from movies, to music, to the President himself, it all hails from Southern California. Across LA, six nights a week, working musicians, TV actors, stuntmen, cops, hustlers, and broken souls all play their part in the cultural myth making. Most of them are just trying to survive—on the B-side of the City of Angels. This is Palomino — where Farrah Fawcett hair reigns supreme, where Ronald Reagan is beginning his first term as President, and where LA's hottest music spot is North Hollywood's historic Palomino Club. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

He's always willing to make time for his fans and his interviews are always fun and informative. So I appreciate him taking the time to talk with me, especially at a busy con like WonderCon. On this episode, we discuss his love for the noir genre, which is a huge influence on his comic book, Silver. (which currently has a Kickstarter going on for volume 4 that ends on June 28, 2018) We also touch on The Iron Giant Panel that he did at WonderCon...especially the technical challenges of melding CG and traditional animation in the 90's. The audio of this panel has been included at the end of the interview (video version is on our website, HallH.com) I hope you enjoy my conversation with Stephan Franck! If you are ever at a con make sure to check out his panels and go meet him in person at his Dark Planet Comics booth!

This week I’ve got a do-over interview with Jacob Semahn and Jorge Corona, the writer and artist of No. 1 with a Bullet from Image Comics.  You may recall that I spoke with them previously but the audio files were corrupted so the interview got scrapped. They were kind enough to speak with me again now that the series has wrapped up.  No. 1 with a Bullet is a very timely and chilling look at our use of technology and social media. It could not be more relevant. As a bonus, colorist Jen Hickman also joins in the chat for a bit too, reflecting on her choices for the color scheme of No. 1 with a Bullet.   The series’ covers were nominated for an Eisner and once you see them you will understand why.  They’re pretty awesome. All six issues of No. 1 with a Bullet along with the six page prologue story will be collected in a trade paperback available at your local comic book shop on Wednesday, June 6th.   Jacob can be found on Twitter at @SaxonJacob and Jorge can be found on Twitter @jecorona. In other news, past guest Stephan Franck has returned to Kickstarter to fund the release of the fourth and final volume of his vampire heist comic, Silver.  I was quick to back this campaign because it has been an awesome ride so far. As a special reward, backers at certain levels can receive a slipcase to store all four volumes which will look pretty cool on the book shelf.   CONTACT: Email | Twitter SUBSCRIBE: RSS | iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher Music by Eric Matyas (www.soundimage.org)

Hello fellow nerds and geeks, Aaron Nabus here and one of my favorite comic books at the moment is Silver, by Stephan Franck. How lucky it was for me to get a chance to interview him at the Dark Planet Comics booth at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 for the Hall H Show podcast! Besides talking about his noir comic book about treasure hunters looking for vampire silver, in the 1930's, we discussed his childhood growing up in France and his love for comic books…especially when comic books from the United States were finally allowed into the country in the late 70's, how the movie Heavy Metal was a huge influence at age 13, his love for Will Eisner and his comic book The Spirit, and how he parlayed his cinematic experience as an animator on films such as The Iron Giant and Space Jam into his new endeavor, the very striking comic book, Silver. Speaking of Silver, the Kickstarter campaign for Volume 3 ends on Thursday, August 10 2017 10:00 AM. PDT. What do conmen and vampires have in common?
