Originally recorded 08/18/24 After a forced hiatus, the boys are back and ready to roll up on you with their particular geek magic. Blood and sugar sold separately. Stephe opened things up with an in depth account of his trip to SDCC in July. This included Preview Night, Funko Fundays and drinking in San Diego. During this part of the conversation, Bruce took a moment to expound on his Corey Feldman as a performance artist theory. Hey, Bruce got new glasses...the Robert Downey, Jr. kind. There was another edition of Old Men and Their Maladies We discussed Gen X being forced to square dance in gym class and the chaos it created for dyslexics. Stephe had encounters with homeless folks in San Diego. They did not go how you might expect. Finally, Bruce explained the reason for the long hiatus. His mom passed away and the guys reminisced a bit about Mama Jane. She was a fan, even when she had no idea what we were talking about. She knew we were having fun and that's all that mattered to her. Bruce steered the ship out of maudlin with a mention of author, Eli Cranor, and his Arkansas crime noir. Finally, Bruce pointed Stephe toward the poster art of the dearly departed Armadillo World Headquarters. The legendary Austin hippie music venue produced some fantastic posters during their run.
Hopefully, you've had some time with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 by Jason Aaron and Joëlle Jones. The record-breaking comic seemingly found its way into everyone's pullbox last week. Despite San Diego Comic-Con taking over much of the discourse, the IDW Publishing relaunch snatched tremendous attention and fueled equal excitement. As promised, it's a comic for the loyal continuity consumer, curious first-timer, or once-upon-a-time Mirage Studios loyalist. Months back, shortly after he was announced to be on the book, we spoke with writer Jason Aaron about his plans for the brothers. He couldn't reveal much, but we nourished ourselves on a few clues. Now that the first issue is out there, and folks have properly devoured it three or four times, we're stoked to have Aaron back on the podcast, and this time, we can go full-spoilers regarding his first twenty-two pages of TMNT. Our conversation occurred two days into San Diego Comic-Con, enclosed within a spacious conference room at the Hilton Bayfront. Only days before, Aaron and Joëlle Jones signed their first copies of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1. The reaction was immediately positive, and the glow still hung around the author. Together, we discuss why the new series had to begin with Raphael and why he had to be trapped behind bars. We explore the "Return to New York" and the city as both a literal and metaphorical place. Again, our chat goes full spoilers. Please read the issue before pressing play. Of course, we must also discuss San Diego Comic-Con itself—the behemoth—and how we had to adjust our coverage of it in ways we've never had to deal with before. Did CBCC hosts Brad and Lisa have a come-to-Jesus feud in the middle of Preview Night? Yes. Yes, they did. Lessons were learned. Keep your eyes glued to the IDW Publishing page as more and more Ninja Turtles 40th Anniversary celebrations are revealed, and make sure to follow Jason Aaron on Twitter, Instagram, and his website. Conviction: So What?• Where does 2 Corinthians fit? - 2 Corinthians is Paul's fifth communication with this troubled congregation after he planted the church and ministered in Corinth for a year and a half (Acts 18). - The book is full of personal detail and pastoral concern as Paul is defending his ministry from attacks after he has been stern with the church in a letter (7:8-9). - The book continues to repair their relationship which is now moving in the right direction. What should we believe? - Ministry is not about privilege but about service. - Living with generosity and integrity is critical to successful ministry. - Embrace The Paradox of the Cross—Suffering Leads to Glory (4-7) seen in the Example of Jesus (4:1-5:10) and Paul (5:11-7:16).How should we behave? - Serve well. Sunday - 2 Corinthians 13:5-10Home Church Our Home Churches meet weekly to facilitate quicker relational depth, study the same passage taught Sunday to help apply Scripture in the context of community, and pray with one another. Home Church helps our body seek God's best for one another. Home Church Questions 1. What did you learn from Ken's presentation of 2 Corinthians that convicts you or challenges you?2. Paul refers to troubles (afflictions) nine times in his letter. All believers experience troubles, yet God is “the God of all comfort” (1:3, you might read 1:3-11). Can you name a time when you needed comfort, and through what means God provided comfort? Conversely, is there someone you are aware that needs your comfort?3. Paul spends much of the letter defending his integrity and sincerity, both in his decision-making and his apostolic ministry. He describes his life as being led in “triumphal procession,” spreading the “aroma of Christ” to the world (2:15-17). How does this description instruct us about our walk with Christ?4. Paul knew hardship more than we will ever experience (ref. 11:23-28, 32). Amazingly, he never lost heart because of his anticipation of the future (4:16-18). What circumstances in life might cause one to lose heart? How does one embrace and maintain an eternal perspective in those circumstances?5. How would you describe what changed in your life as a “new creation in Christ” (5:17)? How is being a new creation related to being an “ambassador for Christ” (5:18-20).6. Read 9:6-15. What stands out to you personally from these verses about your financial life? How does it relate to the concept of "storing up treasures in heaven" as mentioned in Matthew 6:20?7. What is your personal take-away from the book of 2 Corinthians? Synopsis Night of the Living Dead is a zombie movie about a group of strangers who are funneled into a farmhouse and forced to work together for survival. Ben, our protagonist played by Duane Jones is a strong and courageous man who takes it upon himself to lead the group as they struggle to escape the zombie hoard entrapping them in the home. Through twists and turns they learn that friendship was what they really needed all along. Review of Night of the Living Dead Night of the Living Dead is a foundational horror movie that deserves to be a classic. It has a classic zombie movie feel and did a lot to inspire zombie movies in the future. Despite my enjoyment of the film, there are still points in the movie that feel slow, and the dialogue seems to repeat itself a lot when trying to explain the situation. The makeup isn't always very convincing, at least not compared to modern zombie movies, but it's almost refreshing to see zombies that aren't completely covered in blood and gore. Duane Jones gives a fantastic performance as Ben, and it's easy to root for his strong character. Judith O'Dea's acting is a little over the top for me at times, and her character becomes pretty annoying, but hey maybe if I was in a zombie apocalypse I'd be just as scared and useless as her. Score 8/10

Content: How and What?• How is Luke organized? • Prologue and Purpose of the Gospel (1:1-4) • Infancy Narratives Demonstrating God's Work from the Start (1:5-2:52) • Preparation for Ministry: Jesus Anointed as Messianic Son (3:1-4:13) • Galilean Ministry: The Revelation and Teaching of Jesus (4:14-9:50) • The Journey to Jerusalem: Jewish Rejection & Training for a New Way (9:51-19:44) • Jerusalem Ministry: The Innocent Slain & Raised (19:45-24:53)• What is the message of Luke? Conviction: So What?• Where does this fit? - The Gospel is the first volume of Luke's two-volume work, Luke-Acts, which function together to justify and support the missionary work of his companion, the Apostle Paul. - Luke ties the work of Paul's Gentile Mission back to Jesus' inclusive offer of Salvation to all people and connects that to Old Testament promises. - Luke also looks forward to the ministry of Jesus' disciples in taking the message of Jesus saving work to everyone everywhere. Jesus trained his followers for this mission.• What should we believe? - Jesus is the Messiah/Christ—the long-awaited Savior promised in the Old Testament. - Jesus opens the door for all people, especially those who are outcasts in the world and looked down upon by influential and religious hypocrites. - Jesus' followers have been trained and charged with taking the message of Salvation by grace accomplished by the finished work of Jesus to a world that needs this message. How should we behave? - Accept the provision of Salvation through Jesus. - Love those around you, especially the outcast and irreligious. - Share the message of the gospel of grace despite opposition.Next Steps • Repent of your sinful self-centered, self-sufficiency and humbly turn to Christ.• Learn to imitate the lifestyle of Jesus and embrace the call of discipleship and disciple making. This Week's Growth GuideGod's Word is both central and critical to your spiritual growth. Home Church Questions • What about Ken's presentation of Luke was most helpful and challenging?• Among the gospels, Luke alone records the song of Mary (1:46-56). What part of Mary's beautiful song of praise and appreciation captures where you are in your walk right now? Why? • In verse 53 of Mary's song, the “hungry” are contrasted with the “rich,” referring to spiritual hunger. Would you characterize your spiritual hunger right now as “on the increase,” “flat,” or “waning a bit?” In either case, what is happening in your life that is causing your response? • Read 10:38-42, where Luke tells us of Jesus's visit to the home of Mary and Martha. When have you been “anxious and troubled about many things,” and what would be the “good portion” that would stand in contrast? • Read the parables in 11:5-8 and 18:1-8 in which Jesus taught persistence in prayer. How is this instructive to you in your prayer life? What are you praying for that you are tempted to give up?• Luke emphasizes that the gospel is for all, with an emphasis on Gentiles and societal outcasts, i.e., the “outsiders” of Judaism. Who are the outsiders in our society and across the world, and how can you be a part of reaching them for Christ? • What is your personal takeaway from the book of Luke? What steps can you take in response? It's been a wild weekend in the basketball as well as the wrestling world. Starting with the Heat advancing to the NBA Finals to match up with the Nuggets after an insane end to game 6 and an anti-climatic game 7 where the Heat dominated the Celtics to win the series. In other news, the dominoes for the vacant coaching positions are falling into place as Nick Nurse goes to Philly, and Adrian Griffin taking the Buck's job. Meanwhile, Jordi Fernandez has emerged as a possible favorite to become the Raptor's head coaching job. On the West Coast, Bob Myers is stepping down as the General Manager of the Golden State Warriors, sending shockwaves through that organization and the NBA world. And to close out the episode, Owen and Fong recap the crazy weekend of wrestling by talking about WWE's Night of Champions show in Saudi Arabia and AEW's Double or Nothing show in Las Vegas.
