What was the starting point for the virus concept, and how did you land on the idea that the “cure” is tied to killing another infected person? There's an early suggestion in the book that civilization didn't collapse because people failed to work together, but because they turned on each other. How much of this story is meant to reflect real-world anxieties about how fragile social order really is? You've described the idea that “civilized society is a failed experiment.” How does that philosophy shape Ryder's journey, especially as someone who begins the story outside that cycle of violence? Ryder starts off relatively sheltered, living behind a wall and seemingly untouched by the infection. What interested you about telling a story through a character who hasn't yet been forced to compromise his morality? The relationship that pulls Ryder out into the world feels central to the emotional core of the book. How did you approach balancing that love story with the brutality of the setting? Without spoiling too much, how does the virus actually work on a thematic level? Is it purely biological, or is it also meant to represent something more psychological or societal? As Ryder encounters other survivors and “monster-killers,” how do you approach defining who the real monsters are in this world? Shifting to The Smart Division, the idea of an AI being involved in a “perfect murder” is chillingly plausible. What kind of real-world advancements in AI or predictive tech inspired this story? The pairing of a Gen-Z savant and a veteran FBI agent feels like a classic odd-couple dynamic. What makes that contrast especially interesting in a story about artificial intelligence and crime? Fun one: if you had to survive in the world of Only the Savage Are Left, what's your strategy in the first 24 hours… and are you making it out alive?

This week, comic shop employees from all over gather in Glendale, California. Zack Kaplan sums up his inspiration for civil rights law in one word: Leandro. It's long-running litigation that seeks to enforce the constitutional right to a sound basic education in North Carolina. As a fifth-grade teacher, Zack read frequently about the case. “I didn't even know that there was a constitutional right to a free public education under our North Carolina constitution. And the more I dug into it, the more it really – that mission and that purpose – really resonated with me,” he tells host Amber Nimocks. Zack eventually left teaching to become a lawyer, today focusing on state and constitutional claims, prison and police misconduct, and appellate litigation at Ballew Puryear. He is also the program chair of "Overcoming Immunity: Pro Tips for Success in Civil Rights Litigation," a CLE scheduled for January 29 at NCAJ headquarters in Raleigh. He invites all lawyers to attend because he believes that everyone in NCAJ advocates for marginalized people going up against an institutional power. “We're hoping that, in a small way, this will be useful in those types of claims.” Register here.

Jace welcomes writer Zack Kaplan back to the show to talk about his new series from Mad Cave, Dark Empty Void, The guys dive deep into the synergy of the story that focuses on a psychologist brouight into the solve the mystery of a woman who emerges from an experimental black hole. There are a lot of parallels to be explored and Zack discusses that as well as the structure of the story and characterization that allows for the greatest relatability. Also, Zack's recently concluded story Beyond Real, is now out in a collected edition and Zack talks about how it is his homage to creators and the act of creating. Exploring the classic science fiction concept of life as a simulation, but not a computerized "matrix" version, but a version inspired by the act of creating which led him to draft 7 distinct and different artists for the project. Ambitious visually as well as naratively, the story is extremely thought-provoking as it follows a visual artist through her journey to find the source of the simulation all the while fighting against the doubts and self-sabotage she has fought all her life.
