The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom
Send us a textIn this episode, we begin a new series called Tea Leaves where we will design each and every episode of the Harry Potter TV before they are announced. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 3:06 We open in Hogwarts. But not in Harry's time, but Lily and James'. We will get to see the Marauders, Snape, and Lily and James in their youth and watch them go through their drama and different relationship. Lily and James find each other and get married, and we get a glimpse of what life was like before Harry and the fight against evil.· 10:47 The years before Hogwarts and their death. Lily and James had friends over a bunch, and Snape and Sirius were big parts of their lives. We can watch as the dynamic shifts in their group as Voldemort rises to power and Peter Pettigrew betrays them.· 15:43 The buildup to their death. We can't forget that this is in the middle of the first wizarding war with Voldemort. Perhaps it starts with whispers of Voldemort's power, and how people are going missing and turning up dead. Lily and James are in the Order, and they are fighting to keep the world safe for Harry. Dumbledore is ordering them around to find and kill Death Eaters. I want to feel afraid when we watch Voldemort creep into their house in Godric's Hallow and kill them.· 23:24 After they are killed, there is panic. The rest of the Death Eaters try to pass as normal people and rejoin society. The Order has to round everyone up. Then we move to the end of the episode, where Dumbledore orders Hagrid to Godric's Hallow to get Harry from the rubble of the house. Hagrid sees Sirius and how distraught he is, which he mistakes for guilt. Hagrid delivers Harry to Dumbledore on Privet Drive, and Dumbledore places Harry on the Dursley's doorstep with the words: “Good luck, Harry Potter.”Having anything you want to hear or say? Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss why we need more flashbacks from the Harry Potter TV show. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 1:33 The Marauders. We didn't get any flashbacks from the Marauders in the story, even though we know a lot about the characters individually. Each of the characters are vital for Harry's life, and their relationships define more of the story than we think. Their dynamics and choices lead to many of the major events we have in the story.· 12:57 Snape. He is one of the densest characters we have in the story, and his past is complex. We have seen some of his flashbacks, but that was only a taste. If anything, the few moments we have seen of his past have shown us what we are missing.· 18:40 Dumbledore. The Fantastic Beasts films were three big flash backs, but they only focused on a specific time frame. What I would really love to see is Dumbledore's childhood in Godric's Hallow, and then his search for horcruxes in greater depth.· 24:11 Voldemort. We have seen something of his childhood, but nothing too in depth. However, what I would love to see is his transformation into Voldemort. The closest thing we have is when his eyes flashed red while holding Hufflpuff's cup for the first time, but I want more than that. Having anything you want to hear or say? From all of the many civilizations in Age of Empires II, Huns are probably the ones having the greates impact on the game. They have been played for many years in the Hun Wars and coined the term "Huns are Huns". In this podcast, we'll do a deep dive into what actually makes huns the huns we know and, spoiler, have always known. There is a lot of nostalgia involved for some players and others may find the huns a little lackluster for good reason. Also: why don't they have stepplancers? There's a lot to uncover when talking about the Huns and I hope you'll enjoy this episode! We've missed our lil' Marauders way too much, so it's high time we return to the Wizarding World of the 1970s and the monolith fanfiction that is ‘All the Young Dudes'. Believe us when we say, these three chapters were a DOOZY of a read. While we would love to justify the length of this episode by saying these chapters simply lead to that much discussion, there are in fact many tangents (so out of character for us). Basic Snitches-A Harry Potter Podcast You Didn't Know You Needed
On this Timed Turner episode, we discuss all the Harry Potter spin-offs that we would watch...we start off pretty standard suggesting the need for a series about McGonagall and the Marauders and the founders of Hogwarts... Then, as you would expect, it gets weird (though not as weird as it could be, considering who we are...)
Thirteen years hiding in plain sight. A friendship shattered beyond repair. A betrayal so bold it rewrote the entire course of the wizarding war. The question isn't whether Peter Pettigrew had audacity—it's where he found the ratdacity. In this episode of Critical Magic Theory, we're scurrying deep into the shadows of the Marauders' messiest member. Was Peter just a coward—or was he a master strategist in rodent's clothing? We're talking betrayal, survival, fear-fueled loyalty, and what happens when your desire to matter eclipses your sense of morality. Plus: we unpack your survey responses, consider what makes a “good” Death Eater (yes, that's a thing), and reflect on how the Pettigrews among us are closer than we think. And a huge thank you to our newest Deep Divers on Patreon: Sophie, Ariel, and Tammy!Your support means the world—and helps keep this community curious, thoughtful, and full of just the right amount of chaos. As always, my friends— Be critical. Stay magical.

Send us a textIn this episode, we discuss characters we should have known better. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 1:34 Luna. We hear something of her backstory, but we don't have the chance to truly understand who she is and where she came from. We did get to meet her father, but only for a moment.· 6:31 Lupin. He has only a few moments of venerability, but those give us such a sophisticated perspective of who he is. More of those would go a long way.· 11:47 Dumbledore. It's pretty obvious why we need more of Dumbledore. He has such a big impact on the story, and it is too big to overlook his past.· 14:35 Snape. We do get a good look into Snape's inner workings, but we don't understand why he hates James so much. Absolutely, his relationship with Lily is explored, but not his interactions with James. · 18:07 James. Our view of James is through other eyes, whether that be memories or some other form. All we need is a few moments of him being himself. That would give us a more neutral view of his character.· 21:45 Sirius. We know a lot about him, but always it is always helpful to have more context around the Marauders.· 23:21 McGonagall. She is one big question mark. We don't know a thing about her past, what she did before Hogwarts, or where she found her rock-solid morals. It might give us an interesting perspective on her interactions to know where they came from.· 26:10 Voldemort. The line between Tom Riddle and Voldemort is a little too solid for my liking, so a few scenes that could show us more plainly his transformation would go a long way.Having anything you want to hear or say? Episode #310: Mike shares an in-depth look at the Burma Front during World War II, emphasizing the forgotten contributions of Merrill's Marauders, a U.S. long-range penetration unit tasked with seizing the Myitkyina airfield. The airfield was crucial in maintaining Allied supply lines, but the mission was grueling, with only 130 out of 2,750 soldiers remaining combat-fit by the end.In 1995, Mike accompanied veterans on an emotional return to Burma to revisit wartime locations, including Myitkyina. But the trip was marred by strict military oversight from the Burmese junta, who attempted to co-opt the visit for their own propaganda purposes. Nevertheless, the veterans succeeded in reconnecting with key sites and honoring their fallen comrades, and recovering the remains of U.S. servicemen missing in action, which was complicated by sensitive political barriers, but resolved through the involvement of Senator John McCain. The discussion also delves into Mike's spiritual journey with Burmese mysticism, particularly the weikza tradition, which blends meditation and supernatural beliefs. Mike describes how this practice influenced his perspective on Burma, helping him understand its complexities through both historical and spiritual lenses. He came to believe that he had been a member of the Ta'ang ethnic group in a past life, deepening his connection to Burma's cultural heritage."The thing is, see things as they really are, and then act with skillful action," Mike says, urging listeners to strip away biases and conditioned perspectives to truly understand Burma's complex realities. "Stop it! You have colored glasses on through a conditioned mind, and you're making wrong decisions about Burma and everything else, and what is Myanmar, and so we have to do is clear that conditioned mind and see things as we are and deal with things right there."

On this episode, we examine the relationship between humor and resistance to authoritarianism. Harry Potter scholar and stand-up comedian Mark-Anthony Lewis joins Katy and Emily to talk about what makes something funny. Benign violation theory says that humor is found in something safe - for example, you can laugh at someone falling if they aren't seriously hurt, and you can tickle someone you know, but not a stranger. It's all about context. It can be especially funny when an authority figure looks ridiculous. Comedians are often viewed as truth-tellers, and a jester - seen as non-threatening - may be the only person who can speak the truth in the presence of the king. Humor in Harry Potter is often subversive, with Peeves and the Weasley twins as the primary examples, particularly against Umbridge. But humor is not inherently virtuous. Sometimes, pranks can go too far and veer into bullying or unintentionally inspire villains. This applies to the Marauders as well. The power dynamics in a particular situation can determine whether or not a joke is funny. When employed appropriately, jokes can help fight fear, like when facing a boggart. And what's more frightening than totalitarianism?

When the Entrepreneur stops at a deuterium mining colony, the very stressed out miners don't seem willing to sell. But when Trip offers to help with facility repairs, Archer insists on teaching a man how to murder his bullies. Which cartoon character definitely has bodies? What could these Klingons use more of? Why is T'Pol keeping her badass-ness under a basket? The Shadow is a collection of serialized dramas originating in 1930s pulp novels and later expanding to various media. The titular character has been featured in radio dramas, pulp magazines, comic books, television, serials, video games, and films. Initially created as a radio show narrator, The Shadow was developed into a literary character by Walter B. Gibson in 1931. The radio drama, featuring Orson Welles, premiered in 1937. The Shadow character was depicted as having the power to manipulate men's minds, making them unable to see him. The radio program's iconic introduction, voiced by Frank Readick, and accompanied by a musical theme, has become a part of American idiom. Each episode concluded with a reminder that crime does not pay and The Shadow knows. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support
"Whatever happened, you're still part of the team! You're still one of the X-Men!" Much like the comics from which X-Men: The Animated Series drew so much of its inspiration, season 2 would immediately see the show begin to double down on its history and build out an ever-expanding mythology. No longer obligated to present stories at an entry level, the show took full advantage of its serialized format to springboard plots off the backs of its own previous plots. To that end, season 2 opens with a bombshell: the return of Morph, long thought dead since the events of the series' opening two-parter. This came as a shocking and satisfying twist, rewarding loyal viewers for their continued interest. And if it came at the cost of invalidating the show's edgiest, most ground-breaking moment? So what! This was comics, after all, or at least comics-on-Saturday-morning. Further to that, Morph had proven to be an unexpected fan favorite based on initial impressions, so a reversal of fortune was arguably worth it not merely for a big reveal, but to offer a path back to semi-regular appearances for the character. The revolving door of death would be one of the many ways the show was brought more into alignment with the tropes of the comics. More direct echoes could be traced in the form of Scott and Jean's wedding, which would occur in the comics a mere four months later. Likewise, new anti-mutant antagonist Graydon Creed and his homegrown militia, the Friends of Humanity, had made their print debuts a little over six months prior to the airing of "Till Death," part 1. Henchmen the Nasty Boys are utilized prominently beginning in part 2 and throughout the season, despite having appeared in exactly one comics storyline from 1992 (and in lieu of an older and more infamous group that preceded them in the Marauders). All this, with little in the way of reintroductions to our principal cast. From a critical standpoint, this approach for a season premiere might politely be described as "inaccessible" to say the least. Owing to many of these changes was no doubt the arrival of X-Men line editor Bob Harras in an official capacity as Story Consultant. To Harras, inaccessibility was a feature far more than a bug. During his tenure overseeing the X-office at the height of the speculator era, the more tangled, sprawling, and convoluted the storytelling, the better. For the industry's many eager young collectors, the complex nature of the X-Men's history, combined with the present-day storylines whose conclusions typically offered more questions than answers, there was a desperate need to Make It All Make Sense. Helping Jenny and Tim to Make It All Make Sense on this installment of X-Position is Keithie, not unlike Beast, joining the episode in progress. All told, this two-parter delivers a satisfying, intricately-plotted opening salvo that will be representative of the season as a whole. Thematically, the story makes excellent use of deception as a recurring motif. From Wolverine's brawl with a robotic duplicate of Cyclops, to the mutant-impersonating crisis actor disrupting President Kelly's inauguration, Graydon Creed's subsequent manipulation of the media, and right down to Morph's duplicitous divide-and-conquer scheme to use the X-Men to undo the X-Men, truly nothing is as it seems. And that's to say nothing of Morph's return from a seemingly certain death. It's fitting, then, that standing atop all of this subterfuge is the riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma known as Mr. Sinister. His presence will loom large throughout the series following this maleficent animated debut. To its credit, the script makes effective and logical use of Sinister as Morph's corrupting benefactor, and even manages to flesh out his ultimate motives more decisively over the course of 22 minutes than 6-plus years worth of comics appearances had managed. Though taking its cues ever more from the comics, this stands as an example of the finite nature of the animated series imposing a storytelling discipline that occasionally outshined its source material.
