You know how they say "Be careful what you wish for"? Well, installment 74 of our Merry Marvel Movie March is a review of the movie "Venom: Let There Be Carnage", which doubles down on the buddy comedy vibes from the first film. And now we wish it were a full on rom-com! Are we being fickle, or has the franchise just not found its footing? We're holding out hope for "Venom 3", but box office numbers suggest the smart money is in staying the course.

PUBLIC VERSION. Actor Akie Kotabe (EVERLY, THE BATMAN, THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER, VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey. From majoring in computer science at UT Austin before randomly noticing a casting call and on a whim actually auditioning… to bombing that very first audition but catching the acting bug… to fearing the odds of ever becoming an actor and deciding to move to Japan to teach English instead… to his mother's passing causing him to go for broke and chase his real passion… to making the move to Southern California only to discover that Los Angeles wasn't exactly as depicted in LAST ACTION HERO… to his days of working odd jobs doing everything from waitering to selling spoons as a telemarketer… to acting in student films and then booking his first TV commercial… to becoming a working actor in TV and film… to Akie's deeply personal process in developing “Dead Man's” motivation in EVERLY… to the importance of bringing a grounded point of view and realism to even the most supporting role in a film… Akie has remained as down to earth a guy as you'll ever meet despite traversing through everything from TV commercials to performing in the biggest budget Hollywood blockbusters being made today. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a writer who feels like they may never write again due to their long haul COVID-19 symptoms and the guys share some of their most awkward celebrity encounters in this fantastic conversation that should be required listening for anyone who has ever wanted to pursue their passion instead of stick with the safer status quo.

The name Skylar Grey might not be instantly recognisable, but you'll definitely know the songs she's co-written: "Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem, "Clarity" by Zedd, "I Need A Doctor" by Dr. Dre and "Last One Standing" from the Venom: Let There Be Carnage soundtrack are just some of her hits. Skylar sung the chorus hook on "Glorious" by Macklemore and "Coming Home" by Diddy; she's a long-time collaborator with Eminem, as a performer, songwriter and producer; and she is also a solo artist in her own right. In fact from the moment she started performing as a kid, being the main artist was Skylar's goal. But as you're about to find out there have been many detours along the way, with both incredible highs and soul crushing lows. It was during one of those lows that Skylar wrote, performed and produced her new self-titled solo album.  We talk about it all in this interview.

He was 71. Hurt's death was confirmed to Variety by his friend, Gerry Byrne.   His son Will said in a statement, “It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes.”   Hurt was nominated for four Oscars over the course of his long career, scoring two best actor nominations for “Broadcast News” and “Children of a Lesser God” and a supporting actor nod for less than 10 minutes of screen time in “A History of Violence.” He was one of the most heralded performers of the 1980s, becoming something of a cerebral sex symbol and a reluctant, albeit bankable, movie star. Hurt later transitioned into character roles in the 1990s and successfully alternated between big screen projects and television, scoring Emmy nominations for his work as a whistleblower in “Damages” and his portrayal of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson in “Too Big to Fail.”   More recently, Hurt became well known to a younger generation of movie lovers with his portrayal of the no-nonsense General Thaddeus Ross in 2008's “The Incredible Hulk.” He later reprised the role in “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame” and “Black Widow.”       MCU – This week on the Box Office Report, we continue to see Matt Reeves and The Batman bringing in the money. Globally, The Batman is already nearing $500 million in ticket sales, far surpassing its $200 million budget. This is significant as only four films have been able to reach the half-billion dollar mark in the pandemic era, including Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.86 billion and counting), No Time to Die ($774 million), F9: The Fast Saga ($726 million), and Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($502 million). Warning: Do not listen to this episode unless you have seen the 2021 Sony/Marvel film "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" or do not mind hearing key plot points. This is the 2nd installment of the Venom film series, and this episode reviews the film. In it, Woody Harrelson plays Cletus Kassidy/Carnage and Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock/Venom. Acclaimed content creator Brian Tong returns to the podcast (his first review was Episode 250 Shang-Chi) to talk about this film. While there is praise for the performances, the plot and writing come under scrutiny. The issues in the film also are compared to the original comic book storyline and the absence of Spider-Man as Venom/Carnage's main protagonist. Still, there is a discussion of that post-credit scene and its impact on future Spider-films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
