PUBLIC VERSION. Actor Akie Kotabe (EVERLY, THE BATMAN, THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER, VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey. From majoring in computer science at UT Austin before randomly noticing a casting call and on a whim actually auditioning… to bombing that very first audition but catching the acting bug… to fearing the odds of ever becoming an actor and deciding to move to Japan to teach English instead… to his mother's passing causing him to go for broke and chase his real passion… to making the move to Southern California only to discover that Los Angeles wasn't exactly as depicted in LAST ACTION HERO… to his days of working odd jobs doing everything from waitering to selling spoons as a telemarketer… to acting in student films and then booking his first TV commercial… to becoming a working actor in TV and film… to Akie's deeply personal process in developing “Dead Man's” motivation in EVERLY… to the importance of bringing a grounded point of view and realism to even the most supporting role in a film… Akie has remained as down to earth a guy as you'll ever meet despite traversing through everything from TV commercials to performing in the biggest budget Hollywood blockbusters being made today. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a writer who feels like they may never write again due to their long haul COVID-19 symptoms and the guys share some of their most awkward celebrity encounters in this fantastic conversation that should be required listening for anyone who has ever wanted to pursue their passion instead of stick with the safer status quo.

The Carnage that was teased at the end of Venom has arrived, albeit with much straighter, non-Ronald McDonald looking hair on Woody Harrelson's head. Cowards. But that's the ONLY part of Venom: Let There Be Carnage that's less goofy than the first one. Hear us dissect this movie like a symbiote eating a human head. Also, while Max Fun Drive is officially over, there's a weekend amnesty where you can get all the listener thank-yous and such. The name Skylar Grey might not be instantly recognisable, but you'll definitely know the songs she's co-written: "Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem, "Clarity" by Zedd, "I Need A Doctor" by Dr. Dre and "Last One Standing" from the Venom: Let There Be Carnage soundtrack are just some of her hits. Skylar sung the chorus hook on "Glorious" by Macklemore and "Coming Home" by Diddy; she's a long-time collaborator with Eminem, as a performer, songwriter and producer; and she is also a solo artist in her own right. In fact from the moment she started performing as a kid, being the main artist was Skylar's goal. But as you're about to find out there have been many detours along the way, with both incredible highs and soul crushing lows. It was during one of those lows that Skylar wrote, performed and produced her new self-titled solo album.  We talk about it all in this interview.

Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 7 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Catalyst starts off the episode this week with Cole Neville who sat down to talk with the Executive Vice President in charge of Global Customer Activations and Experiences at Sony Pictures Entertainment Ann-Elizabeth Crotty. Cole and Ann-Elizabeth delve into the details of what she does in her position, including but not limited to: in field and online research; data collection; marketing and promotion plans; as well as event planning and logistics for campaigns such as Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and the upcoming Spiderman: No Way Home, to name just a few. With a degree and background in Sociology, Ann-Elizabeth expounds on how her background provided the tools for looking at, analyzing, and researching human and group behavior, culture, and cultural movements. She explains how those skills marry perfectly with the field of marketing. Cole wraps up the interview with a look at social justice movements within a big company like Sony, and Ann-Elizabeth's take on the Creative and Cultural Industries. Segment two highlights Aidan Finlayson and his interview with social media content creator Daniel Foldes. With his work on TikTok gaining views and followers, his work was propelled on to other platforms such as Instagram and Twitter which provided him with the influence needed to gain sponsorships. Listen along as Aidan dissect Daniel's rise to fame and hear about his plans for his future in the Creative and Cultural Industries.

He was 71. Hurt's death was confirmed to Variety by his friend, Gerry Byrne.   His son Will said in a statement, “It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes.”   Hurt was nominated for four Oscars over the course of his long career, scoring two best actor nominations for “Broadcast News” and “Children of a Lesser God” and a supporting actor nod for less than 10 minutes of screen time in “A History of Violence.” He was one of the most heralded performers of the 1980s, becoming something of a cerebral sex symbol and a reluctant, albeit bankable, movie star. Hurt later transitioned into character roles in the 1990s and successfully alternated between big screen projects and television, scoring Emmy nominations for his work as a whistleblower in “Damages” and his portrayal of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson in “Too Big to Fail.”   More recently, Hurt became well known to a younger generation of movie lovers with his portrayal of the no-nonsense General Thaddeus Ross in 2008's “The Incredible Hulk.” He later reprised the role in “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame” and “Black Widow.”       MCU – Eternals (2021)Chloe Zhao directs this ambitious and visually stunning film from the Marvel Universe. The immortals have been living here on earth since 5000 BC shaping our destiny and fighting the Deviants who have returned even bigger and better than before. Benedetta (2021)Paul Verhoeven Directs this fascinating study of Benedetta Carlini, an early 17th century nun who had a scandalous relationship with another nun, seemed to have visions, channeled a male saint and was favoured by the Virgin Mary. This is a true story, very graphic but really worth it.Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)The charismatic and humorous Eddie Brock is back again trying to share a body with the hilarious symbiote Venom. This time he becomes entwined with the serial killer Cletus Kasady played by Woody Harrelson. Soooo… Let the carnage begin! The Last Duel (2021)A historical drama directed by Ridley Scott that really didn't get its due. Starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer, this film is set in medieval France and based on the last jousting duel officiated by the crown. Truth, is the question here after Jean Carrouges' (Matt Damon) wife Marguerite (Jodie Comer) accuses Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) of rape. Really a good film!!!

Bienvenido a La Wikly. This is a public episode. Another Monday, another weekly A podcast episode! Today, we kick things off with the weekly comic book pull list. I'm delighted to be doing spotlights on comics of excellent representation again this week, including Maria Llovet's Porcelain, Victoria Douglas' Cinnamon, Taboo and B. Earl's Spirit Rider, the second Horizon Zero Dawn series, and more! This week has the final issue of Maurene Goo and Takeshi Miyazawa's Silk series, the second-to-last of Sensational Wonder Woman, and a good deal of other #1's! Then it's on to Friday's episode of the Bad Batch--ep. 14. While it ended with a serious problem for the Batch, it was an intriguing episode as we close in to the end of this 16-episode series! After that is my discussion of the new trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage! It looks pretty fun, but Woody Harrelson is no doubt going to totally steal the show.  Finally, I end the episode with a discussion spurred by a recent online article/interview with Matt Damon, and the problematic ideas it presented. TL;DR: the end of theaters is not the end of entertainment media, and the writer should have done some--any-- comic book research.  I'll be back this Friday, August 6th with episode 28B, focusing on comic book Picks from this week's NCBD! Don't forget Friday is also the premier of James Gunn's the Suicide Squad, in theaters and on HBO Max! I'll be watching it then and reviewing it on my episode next Monday, 29A, on Aug. 9th! Till then, stay hydrated, don't cast judgement, and get sweaty over your hobbies.
