“When I interviewed Peter Christman, I didn't know it would be one of his last comprehensive interviews. The privilege of Peter's friendship is matched only by the opportunity to share his story. I first met Peter at EPI while pursuing my CEPA in 2018, and we instantly connected. During our conversation, Peter was his typical irrepressible and dynamic self, despite his health challenges. When I decided to launch a Founders Series for my podcast, Peter was the obvious choice for the inaugural interview. I'm grateful that Peter had the opportunity to reflect on his remarkable career, and I'm honored to share this conversation with everyone. His insights and the story of his journey in shaping the exit planning industry serve as a fitting tribute to his legacy.”~John F. Dini, CExP, CEPA, CBEC Preserving a Legacy: Peter Christman's Thoughts on the Industry He Shaped On June 3rd, Peter G. Christman, CEPA, CPBA, a pioneer in exit planning, shared his journey from corporate roles at Ford and Xerox to founding the Exit Planning Institute (EPI) in this Exit Planning Coach podcast interview with John F. Dini. Christman developed the concept of exit planning in the late 1990s, focusing on a three-pronged approach: maximizing business value, personal financial planning, and preparing for life after selling a business. He is the co-author of The $10 Trillion Opportunity and author of The Master Plan. After selling EPI to Chris and Scott Snider in 2012, the organization has grown significantly, with the concept of exit planning becoming widely recognized in the business world. Christman expressed pride in seeing his ideas come to fruition and the continued influence of his "three legs of the stool" approach.

Welcome, new subscribers, and welcome back, loyal readers! I'm happy you're here.Today's issue is dedicated to an interview with Amanda E. Machado, the author of “The Abstract Rage To Protect,” June's article of the month.First published in The Adroit Journal, “The Abstract Rage To Protect” is about masculinity, the need for men to protect women, the violence that follows, and what we can do about it.I highly encourage you to read the piece (if you haven't already), then listen to the interview, then sign up for our discussion on Sunday, June 30, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT. I'd be very happy to connect with you in conversation.⭐️ About the article“There is a difference between a man's sense of protection and a man's sense of violence,” a male friend once reassured me. But I never could tell the difference. When Amanda E. Machado tells men that she was once sexually assaulted at a festival, with her ex-boyfriend nearby but lost in the crowd, they instantly become ashamed of him. “How could he let this happen?” they ask. “He was supposed to protect you.”In this enlightening essay, Amanda explores notions of masculinity, weaving personal experiences with the work of Phil Christman, a lecturer at the University of Michigan. Christman writes, “When I try to nail down what masculinity is — what imperative gives rise to all this pain seeking and stoicism, this showboating asceticism and loud silence — I come back to this: Masculinity is an abstract rage to protect.”The biggest problem with this “abstract rage to protect,” Amanda argues, is that there is a fine line between a desire to protect and a desire to inflict violence. “The aggression men learn to protect the women they love, becomes exactly how they hurt the women they love.”⭐️ About the authorAmanda E. Machado (she/they) is a writer, public speaker and facilitator with ancestry from Mexico and Ecuador. Their work has been published in The Atlantic, Guernica, The Washington Post, Adroit Journal, Slate, The Guardian, Sierra Magazine, among many other outlets. In addition to their essay writing, Amanda is also a public speaker and workshop facilitator on issues of justice and anti-oppression for organizations around the world. They are also the founder of Reclaiming Nature Writing, a multi-week online workshop that centers the experiences of people of color in how we tell stories about the outdoors.Amanda currently lives on unceded Ohlone land in Oakland, California.⭐️ About the interviewAlongside fellow Article Clubber Sarai Bordeaux, I got a chance to interview Amanda a few weeks ago. It was an honor. We discussed a number of topics, including:* that we all have a desire to be protected* that we're socialized that protection must be physical and therefore may involve violence* that we have a collective responsibility to find ways to redefine protectionMost of all, I appreciated Amanda's generosity. It was clear that their thinking is expansive and non-judgmental. Listening to Amanda got me to want to be more imaginative in how I support others and how I show up for other people when they seek emotional protection. And it made me excited to discuss their piece with you.

From the Jesuits of Canada and the United States, this is AMDG. I'm Mike Jordan Laskey. Sometimes, people wonder how we pick guests for the show. We tell them the Jesuit network is so huge that we'll never run out of interesting conversation partners. Sometimes, though, we come across someone outside of a Jesuit context whose work we love and who we wish we could ask on the show. If only they had a Jesuit connection! But then in some rare occasions, when we look into this great person who's not connected to the Jesuits, we discover they do indeed have a connection! That was the case with today's guest, the author and University of Michigan professor Phil Christman. Phil is the author of two great books of essays, which are titled “How to Be Normal” and “Midwestern Futures.” He also writes a Substack newsletter called “The Tourist” and contributes frequently to “Commonweal.” And, we just found out that he got his master's degree at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There's the Jesuit connection we needed! Phil's essays are funny, sharp, clear, complex and always original. He weaves together elements of memoir, theology, pop culture and literary criticism and more. Host Mike Jordan Laskey's most common reaction when reading Phil Christman, beyond marveling at his curiosity and his mastery of the essay form, is to sit back and think, “Well, I've never thought about that topic in that way before.” One of Mike's favorite essays of Phil's is from his book “How to Be Normal,” and it's titled “How to Be Religious.” An observant Christian in a largely secular milieu, Phil writes about faith in an incredibly compelling way. Phil and Mike talked about the essay and the nature of religious faith. They also discussed teaching English composition in the age of ChatGPT, and why Phil left Twitter after years of being an active user. Happy Thanksgiving! We've reassembled to celebrate the holiday together and enjoy a sponsor paid feast of, mostly potatoes. We're recounting the concerts that we're most thankful for, and we'd love to hear about yours (Comment on our episode page):Nick decided to spin this topic and broke his three into categories. First are the concerts with friends, like the King Gizzard & Black Midi shows he saw with Jay last year. Next we have concerts with family, like Queens of the Stone Age with his brother Alex, Local Natives with his sister Jillian, and the Brian Regan show earlier in the year with Mom, siblings & their spouses. Finally, it's concerts performed by friends and attended with friends and family…which was just a way to bring up the Red Not Chili Peppers.Songs:King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - “Presumptuous” Queens of the Stone Age - “My God is the Sun (Live at The Anthem)”Local Natives - “Wide Eyes (Live at 9:30 Club)”Red Not Chili Peppers - “Can't Stop”Greg runs through the shows that he's most thankful for seeing, particularly because the artists he saw have since passed. In 2001, Greg and a college buddy had the chance to catch Pantera at Towson Center Arena. That same year, Greg's interest in jazz is piqued when he attends a Michael Brecker Masterclass at the University of Maryland. Finally, his freshman year of high school, he stood front and center for the Stone Temple Pilots show at the Patriot Center. Songs:Pantera - “Walk'Michael Brecker (w/ Herbie Hancock and Roy Hargrove) - “The Sorcerer (Live at Massey Hall)”Stone Temple Pilots - “Crackerman”Jay received the best kind of Christman present from his Aunt Patti, concert tickets! In 1997 he saw American Bluegrass musician Russ Barenberg at a small venue in Tennessee. Next up, it's springtime, junior year in high school, and a weekend away with his girlfriend in Philadelphia to see the Dave Matthews Band. Finally, if you know Jay, you've likely heard this one. Bruce Springsteen at M&T Stadium, Jay is in the front row because of the Boss' general admission lottery system. Born in Panama on a military base, and raised in New Jersey, his interests in different cultures, types of people and their lifestyles, he explored by engulfing himself in photography and travel. Reading anything he could get his hands on also played a big part in shaping his unique view of the world. He soon found out that science fiction would prove to be his favorite place to explore by reading the stories of Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Andre Norton, Roger Zelazny and others. More recently, urban fantasy taking more of his reading attention, Jim Butcher, Orlando Sanchez, Steve McHugh soon became favorites. They all influenced him to finally write his own stories down and as a result we have the Mixed Magic Saga. Using an unique twist of magic and science to entertain the reader. Leah, who considers herself an effective altruist, leads Phil, Susannah, and Pete on a tour of Effective Altruism and its affiliated movements, including extreme long-termism and the mysterious world of the “postrats.”

Dan Christman applied to West Point because of the quality of the leaders it had produced and the respect he had for veterans he knew in his local community. Dan arrived to West Point in the Summer of 1961 and experienced the sophomoric behavior of some of the upper classmen and West Point's development through attrition model, but also had access to some of the most influential leaders of his era. MacArthur, John F. Kennedy, and Eisenhower. Dan graduated from West Point in the Summer of 1965 and would go on to serve in South Korea, Vietnam, Europe, and the Middle East and gained a deep appreciation for the impact that overseas experiences play in developing leaders. Dan also served in key positions from Company Command in Vietnam, to Instructing at West Point, to serving in the US Army Corps of Engineers, serving as the Commanding General for Fort Leonardwood and the Engineer School Commandant, and multiple positions in support of the National Security Council and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dan talks through his experience in becoming the 55th Superintendent for West Point (1996 - 2001) and his vision for adding to the legacy of the Academy and its role in developing leaders of character. Dan closes with comments about his thoughts on 9/11 and experiences with the Class of 2001. This is his story. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joe-harrison0/support

Unraveling the Bible's Message on Climate

In this episode of Citizens' Climate Change, we explore the intersection between the Bible and climate change. More specifically, we discuss the Christian faith and how it inspires its followers to advocate for the planet.  Pastor Kyle Meyaard Schaap, husband, father, and self-described disciple of Jesus, is Vice President of the Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN). EEN is a ministry that educates, inspires, and mobilizes Christians in their effort to care for God's creation. Pastor Schaap is also of the book, Following Jesus in a Warming World: A Christian Call to Climate Action. It was published by Intervarsity Press, and is a memoir and theological field guide written for millennials and Gen Z believers. His message is that there is a space for Christians in the environmentalist movement.  In fact, Pastor Schaap reminds us that the Bible starts off with Genesis where God gives man authority over creation. Schaap reveals to us how his faith as a Chrisitan inspires his climate work. Jesus asked his followers to love their neighbor as themselves, and Schaap asks Christians to extend this invitation to love all things including the natural world. Even further, Pastor Schaap suggests as Christians strive to be like Jesus, they must be impatient for the Kingdom of God. He urges fellow Christians to commit to creation care. “Our hope, and God's good plans for the world, has always been more stubborn than our fear of our ability to derail them.” - Kyle Meyaard Schaap A Climate Life Verse Ruth Abraham, a member of the Citizens Climate Radio team, shares with us the Bible verse that speaks to her about creation care and our need to clean up the pollution in the world. She is inspired by the Christman hymn, Joy to the World, which was written by Isaac Watts, and a verse in Luke's Gospel.  Luke Chapter 2 verse 7  “And Mary gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Joy to the world,/ the Lord is come Let Earth receive her King / Let every heart / prepare Him room And Heaven and nature sing And Heaven and nature sing  /(say it with me now)/ And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing But the resonating line for Ruth is / “prepare Him room.”  In light of the humble reception Jesus received when he first arrived on earth, she recommends we consider how to prepare for his second coming. For Ruth, that means cleaning the air and water that God has gifted to us. Take a Meaningful Next Step Each month we will suggest meaningful, achievable, and measurable next steps for you to consider. We recognize that action is an antidote to despair. If you are struggling with what you can do, consider one of the following next steps.  If you are a trained clergy or a lay minister, the Red Cross is actively looking for volunteers to provide spiritual support to people who experienced a disaster. Besides big regional disasters like hurricanes, tornados, and wildfires, the Red Cross also responds to local disasters like housefires. Learn about the many volunteer opportunities at RedCross.org. World Vision focuses on helping the most vulnerable children overcome poverty so they can experience the fullness of life. Inspired by their Christian faith, they help children of all backgrounds, even in the most dangerous places. Part of this work includes disaster management. As storms and floods have increased, so has the efforts of groups like World vision. They also assist during disasters caused by extreme weather and political crisis. Learn how you can get involved in their Emergency support efforts. Dig Deeper  I'm a Climate Scientist Who Believes in God. God Uses Changing Climates to Change Societies (Christianity Today)  Citizens Climate Radio episode 56 Rev. Tony Campolo's Call to Save Creation  Resilience Corner  “Resilience is about recognizing a challenge and moving through it, so that we're a little bit stronger on the other side of it.”  Tamara Stanton, returns this episode with a new series: Resilient Climate-teering through Unexpected Climate Connections. The goal is to have you, the listener, worry less and act more.  After revealing the motivation behind the name “Climate-Teering.” Staton begins to equip us with the tools necessary to combat the inevitable challenges that come alongside climate change. She reminds us that resilient minds respond to conflict with an, “I got this,” attitude. Good News  CCR's very own intern, Lila Powell, delivers a story about various faith groups who are collaborating to advance a climate preservation mission. In 2022, Egypt hosted COP27. In attendance were several religious institutions and a wonderful demonstration of interfaith conversations in support of climate policy. In addition to committees, some faith groups have gone as far as publically divesting from fossil fuels. It is a great step forward.  For more links and full transcript, visit our full show notes

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by Chapo Trap House's Matt Christman, to discuss his new podcast project Hell On Earth. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Senator John Fetterman's mental health, Rick Scott being forced to retreat his plan for sunsetting Medicare and Social Security, DeWine finally asking for FEMA's help, the reveal of a brand new GOP fraudster, and medical policy changes in North Dakota (good ones) and Idaho (bad ones), before jumping into the release of new information in Dominion's lawsuit against Fox, and Ohio's GOP representatives finally come around to speaking up for their constituents in East Palestine. Ryan Grim then joins as he walks through the coverage of the freight rail chemical spill in East Palestine and the important role of independent media in keeping the story afloat as Norfolk Southern attempted to sweep it under the rug, before tackling the utter failure of Pete Buttigieg's Department of Transportation in handling this issue and every other one they've faced. Next, Ryan, Sam, and Emma parse through the impact of Biden's State of the Union in getting the GOP to abandon their cuts to Social Security and Medicare, discuss public opinions on the war in Ukraine, both at home and abroad, and dive into the complete defamation debacle that Fox is facing after intra-office messages were leaked flaunting their lies about election fraud. Next, Matt Christman dissects his most recent endeavor “Hell On Earth,” which walks through the evolution from feudalism to capitalism in Europe, first looking at the collision of the 30 Years' War and a small environmental emergency and how it spurred a complete economic emergency on the continent, while protestant reformation and political realignments saw various alternatives emerge. Christman then looks to the English revolution and the purification of the church with a new understanding of government led by parliament with growing tides of radical democracy, exploring how this realignment in England, despite the empire's minimal resources, opened the country up to take advantage of early capitalism and settler-colonialism, launching it to the peak of European power and pushing the West to fully embrace capitalism as the economic model. They wrap up the interview by tackling some extra fun tidbits on Fox's lawsuit with Dominion. And in the fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through Jimmy Dore's appearance on Tim Pool's show to explain why Pfizer is the only real problem in the world to be skeptical about, and shows exactly why his anti-establishment shtick is meaningless. They also tackle Matt Walsh embarrassing himself on the Tennessee House floor, plus, your IMs!
