During the pandemic, as a profession, teachers have been concerned about our students’ learning. We've been putting intervention strategies in place to prevent learning loss, whilst remediating knowledge gaps caused by periods of remote teaching and learning. Today I’m joined by Sydney teacher primary Vivian Roszkowski. As a teenager, Vivian was one of many students around the world who, even before the Covid19 pandemic, encountered enormous challenges to learning, and disruption to their education. Vivian, at age 14, became a refugee. The obstacles Vivian faced, and overcame, when trying to complete her own education, give her daily inspiration, empathy and connection to the children she’s taught though the pandemic. You’ll hear about how Vivian’s family fled war-torn Iraq in 2003, made it to Syria, also in conflict, and undocumented refugees like Vivian and her family were not allowed to work or attend school. She’ll take us through her family’s desperate attempts in applying to many countries seeking asylum, and her journey to Australia, where she had no English, was eighteen years old and had to catch up on her schooling in order to make it into her teaching course at uni. Squid Game is a series streaming on Netflix that is not only breaking the ‘most-streamed series ever’ record, but it’s also filtering down to some of our youngest children in our primary schools. We were recently made aware of school children as young as 6 being exposed to this Netflix show. If you haven’t yet watched Squid Game, it’s certainly not been designed for young people’s eyes, that’s for sure! However, they are seeing it or being exposed to aspects of it through Netflix, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and even Roblox. We recently asked Trent from the Cyber Safety Project to provide us with some hints and tips on how teachers can deal with this emerging situation in our primary schools. In this episode, listen as Bron and Jill chat about the show and the main tips that Trent shared with us. Check out the blog here! Have you subscribed to Teach Starter? Don’t forget! The 26th UN Climate Change Conference starts later today in Glasgow, where world leaders are meeting to discuss climate change and the future. What we can definitely expect though is large demonstrations around the world, particularly in Glasgow, and a lot of pressure on world leaders to do things like stepping up ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change education is also something that is discussed by this body, so we could see something about that on the side, but building back better after the pandemic, and taking up those opportunities to invest in clean energy and low emissions industries, is going to be on the agenda. So while we’re hearing about this a lot in the media, and maybe talking about it in our staff rooms and with families, we wanted to take a bit of time to hear from some teachers about how and where climate change comes into their classrooms. Listen as Michael talks to five teachers about how they're implementing climate change education in their classrooms internationally. Email us at podcast@teachstarter.com or contact us via facebook or instagram to get involved with the podcast! Some time ago, now, in July 2019, Jill and I recorded this episode about sustainability in the workplace, staffroom and classroom. It’s still one of our most downloaded episodes, so we know that teachers are interested in making positive, practical changes in order to help the environment and model sustainable practices for our students. A lot has changed since mid-2019… You’ll hear Jill talk about our Million Trees project. We’re thrilled to say that we’ve now planted more than 67 000 trees with the help of every Teach Starter subscriber. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to visit WA to see they amazing plantation, as travel has been so severely impacted due to Covid 19. Although a lot has changed, some things remain equally if not more critical than two years ago. Climate Change is an urgent issue requiring our collective efforts immediately. With the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021, the spotlight is on Climate Change Action, and as teachers, we know, it’s our responsibility to equip our students, the citizens of the future. How do we do that? We open conversations and start with small, actionable changes which offer kids ownership and understandings of the world which they will inherit. Over the coming weeks, the Teach Starter podcast will be bringing you up to date information Climate Change education, and where to start. When we talk about digital literacies, often the first thing that comes to mind is educating kids about privacy, security, and cyberbullying. Today's children may be large-scale consumers of online media, but they are also creators, publishers, distributors, and critics. The digital landscape is an environment rich with possibilities. Still, it also creates an immediate, practical need: Students have to know how to interact with creative work in ethical and legal ways. Copyright is becoming an essential element of digital literacy – because everyone is a publisher now. David Sohn is an attorney who has developed Copyright and Creativity - a free, open-source curriculum to help teachers navigate education on this topic. Being a beginning teacher is challenging, and transitioning from a largely theory-based, academic understanding of education into a real-life, operational classroom with students with diverse needs, can be tricky. Throw in a pandemic, some remote learning, and physical isolation from your teaching friends and colleagues, and the challenge grows. But it’s not bad news. Beginning teachers right now are developing resilience and flexibility which will hold them in good stead throughout their careers.
