Welcome to a Best of the Day wrap from Unmade.Today: We share the highlights from Compass Auckland, Ooh Media finally discovers some momentum, and big moves on the Unmade Index. If you've been thinking about upgrading to an Unmade membership, this is the perfect time. He added: “I felt like things happened to us, not because of us.”According to Martel, the closure of Newshub should be taken as a signal for action. “It was a strong and important part of New Zealand media. It's now gone.“We need to act. Because if we don't act, we can see the train that's coming down the tracks at us.“The problem is not the quality of what we do, it's the monetisation of what we do. If we don't change what we do now, if we don't embrace AI, if we don't embrace different ways of doing what we've always done, then there will be an extinction-level event for everyone in this room in ten years, if not sooner.”And Pritchard urged a rethink for where the industry spends its marketing budgets: “We spent a lot of time letting international technology players come to every market and sell, sell, sell at really low costs. And that disrupted the media. It challenged the content and the quality of that content. And then when they disrupted it, they decided to put the prices up.“And it's a pretty simple economic environment that we're all facing. The thing we can do to counter it is we can own our own content. We can own our own customer.“We decided that it was just better to throw money at something that continually worked, right? Those metrics of return on ad spend and cost of customer acquisition -they were really attractive for a long time.“Now they're less attractive, but everyone's hooked on it. So maybe we need to go cold turkey for a little bit.”The event was organised by Unmade with the support of NZME, Lumo and Scentre Group's BrandSpace.Ooh Media's turnaround beginsOoh Media will likely soon make it official with its acting chief revenue officer Mark Fairhurst after his first two months in the chair sparked a turnaround in the company's sales trajectory. The emergency appointment of Fairhurst, previously executive general manager of QMS, came in December following the exit of chief revenue officer Paul Sigaloff after just 19 months. In its full-year results released this morning, Ooh Media's revenue and profits were virtually flat for the year, up by 0.3% to $635.6m and 3% to $287m respectivelyOoh Media's 2023 and 2024 results were almost identical. However the company's momentum entering the first quarter has radically improvedOoh Media is on track to bring in 14% more revenue in the current quarter compared to the same time last year.CEO Cathy O'Connor again acknowledged that Ooh Media's sales operation has been slow and hard to deal with. She told today's analysts' call: “We heard from the market that we were slow to respond.”Ooh Media's said its new offering Reo - which assists mid-tier retailers enter the retail media space by outsourcing sales operations and assisting with the digital side - is also picking up momentum. Newly announced clients include Officeworks, Petbarn, and Australia Post, with others in the pipeline.Unmade Index buoyed by Ooh Media and IVE Group resultsOoh Media's improved performance saw it lock in a hefty 15.6% jump in market capitalisation during an action-packed day on the Unmade Index.IVE Group, which also reported solid results today, rose by 6.4% while Seven West Media gained 2.9%.Meanwhile, Nine lost 5.8% as the market continued to digest news of CoStar's bid to buy its majority-owned real estate platform Domain. As a result of the decline of Nine - the biggest weighted stock - the Unmade Index sank by 0.3% to 560.6 points.Best of the Day: News winners; Clems loser; Slater & Gordon's strugglesABC back at the topABC News moved back past News Corp's news.com.au as the site with the biggest audience. According to Ipsos Iris, the ABC's monthly audience grew to 12.5m in January, ahead of news.com.au which lost 3.4% to land on 11.8m.Another Omnicom ad restructureDani Bassil became the latest Clemenger Group CEO to be ousted after failing to recapture the creative brand's glories of previous decades. In this weeks episode of Helping Organisations Thrive, we explore changing your "inner soundtrack" — the constant stream of thoughts, feelings, and internal dialogue that influence how you navigate both personal and professional challenges. Our guest, Angela Watson, shares powerful insights on how increasing awareness of this internal dialogue can lead to greater self-awareness and personal growth. She emphasises that while we can't always control the soundtrack playing in our minds, we do have the power to choose which channels we tune into. By becoming more conscious of the channels we're listening to, we can effectively manage the negative thoughts that may be holding us back from reaching our full potential. Angela provides practical strategies to identify and reframe negative self-talk, develop healthier mental habits, and curate an inner dialogue that aligns with your goals and well-being. The first time I really understood what flow meant I was barefoot in salty sand, building a beach sculpture in Mexico alone in the sunshine. Two hours seemed to disappear in moments as I gathered water-smoothed scraps of painted tile and bright shells and arranged them into swirls and towers underneath the cliffs. Take a second here and ask yourself - when do you feel that amazing feeling, where you are completely immersed in the thing you are doing so the rest of the world falls away? When do you think your students do? We've all noticed the challenges our students are facing right now in focusing their attention. They've got addictive technology, constant social FOMO, and a streaming feed of big world problems competing for their attention every moment of the day. So how are they supposed to find their flow, or even their focus? Today's guest, Angela Watson, has turned her attention carefully to this matter in recent years. She's here today to talk with us about how we can help our students find their way back to focus, and we all know how important that is right now. So let's dive in! Go Further with Angela Watson Angela Watson is a National Board Certified Teacher with a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Teachers spend so much time giving feedback to students, but often kids don't internalize it. They tune out the carefully-crafted written comments on their work, briefly register the grade they earned, and move on. So how can we help students care about improving their skills and take time to reflect deeply on their learning? In this episode, you'll hear how two different teachers have reimagined their instruction to make that possible. It's a sneak peek at two sessions from the upcoming 40 Hour Teacher Workweek Online Summit, a FREE event that is focused entirely on saving teachers time, and helping you do your job more effectively and efficiently. First up, you'll hear from Andrea Clark. She's presenting for the elementary Summit in a session called, “Feedback first: Shifting from traditional grading to reflection sessions.” As you'll hear from Andrea's description of her fifth graders' reflection sessions, this is one of the most worthwhile ways she spends her time as a teacher because her students learn so much from it. Then, you'll hear from Tanya Jo Woodward. She's presenting for the secondary Summit in a session called, “7 time savers for IB and AP teachers.” She talks first about how she grades and gives feedback in her high school English classroom while students are working independently on a task or assessment. She also offers tips for helping students self-correct by providing editing stations or peer editing guided sheets. Like so much of the Summit content, I think you'll find value in hearing both of these teachers' experiences, regardless of which grades or content areas you might teach. Listen in now to hear Andrea and Tanya Jo share the exact processes they've used to transform the way their students think about feedback vs. grades. Then, save your spot for the 40 Hour Teacher Workweek Online Summit. All sessions are just 15-20 minutes long with no filler, fluff, icebreakers, or pitches. And, all the sessions are presented by current K-12 teachers, with bonus keynotes from me (Angela Watson). Sign up for the free live Elementary Summit April 5th-6th Sign up for the free live Secondary Summit April 12th-13th If you can't attend live or the event has already passed by the time you see this, you can purchase forever-access to all the sessions (both elementary and secondary), plus get time-stamped transcripts, note-taking guides, and all the presentation links and templates in one document so that you can reference them easily. Forever-access is just $19, and helps cover the cost of running this event and compensating the teachers who share their ideas. Thank you for your support, and for spreading the word about this event!

The saying goes, "there's no tired like teacher tired." Teachers have exhausting schedules, and if you've ever time stamped a teacher day, you'll know that a teacher day is simply impossible to get through in a day. That feeling is not confined to the classroom. For those of us who have deeply held beliefs about what a student-centered school environment looks like, feels like and ignites learning like, education can be tough, whatever the role. I am humbled at how incremental the change is in the grand scheme of things. That humility makes me want to cry into a glass of milk. That humble place is also a place of remembering: “Define Your Why“, as author and educator Barbara Bray says. Either I believe that I can be an agent of change one small bite at a time, or I don't. The system needs to change, that's why I do what I do. And so, I'll dry my tears and start over. Because futility and hopelessness are just not an option. Care for a few ideas to help get you through? Read on. Encouragement from @DorisASantoro – Rise up with strategies and information on burnout vs. teacher demoralization in this Edweek article that helps you understand what you're dealing with and how to deal with it. Encouragement from @PlanBookCom – Rise up, if you've decided that burnout is where you're heading, with these strategies from PlanBook and don't be afraid to reach out for help. Encouragement from @Angela_Watson – Rise up and Say goodbye to Teacher Tired with this article and resources from Angela Watson. I learned about her 40 hour work week resources from Cult of Pedagogy. Some resources are paid, but even the free ones will revolutionize the way you spend your time. Encouragement from @weareteachers – Rise up and giggle. Sometimes, laughter is the best medicine, and we teachers are a funny lot! Start here then follow them on Twitter and Instagram. Cause, when you run out of tears, sometimes all you can do is laugh. Encouragement from M.L. Brown – If laughter and strategies no longer work, rise up with this Medium article from an educator who decided that enough was enough. For those who have made that decision, let's be supportive, knowing that sometimes, enough really is enough. In today's special Back to School Summit episode, I'm pleased to welcome Angela Watson back to the Organize 365® podcast! Angela has been on the podcast multiple times now. Angela spent 11 years as a classroom teacher and then created a truly life-changing course for Teachers called the 40-Hour Teacher Workweek. She's also the host of her own podcast, Truth for Teachers. We hope all the teachers out there will listen to this episode as it is a hug from Angela and I to you! We understand better than most that teachers LOVE to teach. It's a calling as much as it is a profession. Even if you're not a teacher, this episode is for you! Angela and I dive into planning and have lots of inspiration and tips to share about how to make the most of your days. We discuss how a really good plan actually frees you up to be more creative. Planning doesn't box you in. It helps you maximize your time, but you have to find a planning system that works for you. Planning isn't one-size fits all. Angela and I encourage you through this podcast to listen and learn from many people when it comes to creating a planning system for yourself. Take what works for you and adapt it to your own planning system. Then maintain your planning. Angela has a great analogy for how planning is like gardening. You don't just plant your seeds then you're done. You have to keep checking them, watering them, figure out what's not working and make adjustments. I guess it's true that life's a garden! Listen in and learn how you can plan in the most worthwhile way for you. Learn to plan this summer so you will be ready to run when the most productive 10 weeks of the year come around this fall (from Labor Day until the second week of November). What can you do this summer that will help you run farther faster this fall? On the Wednesday podcast, I get to talk with members of the Organize 365® community as they share the challenges, progress, missteps and triumphs along their organizing journey. You can see and hear transformation in action. I look forward to helping YOU learn the skill of organization, too! Today I'm interviewing Lindsey S. She's a high school special education teacher that found me through my podcast with Angela Watson. What's so interesting about this interview is that Lindsey S. was already living an organized life when she found Organize 365®. But her life was speeding up and she had the wherewithal to know she had to implement some new organizational systems and skills if she was going to keep up. She lives with her husband, twin 5 year old daughters, and 9 year old daughter. Lindsey holds nothing back in the hopes that her story will help others. One of her daughters has a learning disability and one has autism. Her openness in sharing her journey advocating for her children is admirable. Even as a special education teacher of 12 years (knowing the ins and outs of the systems in place), she still needed a system for organizing and presenting her documentation for each of her daughters. She uses the Warrior MAMA Binder! We talk about parent intuition and observation which is something I've always known (anecdotally) is a thing. But I'm learning more and more about it in my PhD program. Lindsey has thoughts on this also! Switching topics to how Lindsey organizes herself and her household - you have to hear how Lindsey is “chunking” out her Sunday Basket® time! If you are in a busy season of life and can't seem to find the time to do your Sunday Basket®, this podcast is for you! I am floored to find out Lindsey also has Sunday Baskets® for each of her girls! She walks me through how these are set up and it is absolutely genius! She gave me some ideas to implement in my own life with my daughter. Then, she walks us through her Friday Workbox® which has been amazing for her since she has so much administrative work that she's been able to make visible (and pretty) with a Friday Workbox®. The Friday Workbox® helps her easily glide through her day. It's given her more capacity and time. How is Lindsey using the time she's unlocked through implementing Organize 365® systems and courses? Listen in to find out! On the Wednesday podcast, I get to talk with members of the Organize 365® community as they share the challenges, progress, missteps and triumphs along their organizing journey. You can see and hear transformation in action. I look forward to helping YOU learn the skill of organization, too! This week, I am sharing my interview with Christine M. She lives with her husband and well loved cat in Ontario, Canada! When Christine M. experienced three moves in a short period of time, she learned the skill of organization through Organize 365®. Christine is a former teacher turned grad student so we had a lot to talk about. Christine found her way to Organize 365® through my friend and fellow podcaster, Angela Watson. She was going through teacher burn-out, something we have been hearing all about. I cannot tell you enough how much I appreciate teachers. If you are a teacher, this podcast is a hug from me to you - thank you for all that you do! Christine's interest in Organize 365® started through her Teacher Friday Workbox® which is now the Education Friday Workbox®. She wanted to implement systems into her teacher role to help her be more productive and purposeful with her time. Her organizational journey went into overdrive when she found that she and her husband would be moving across Canada to Ontario. She utilized Organize 365® Ten Steps to an Organized Move (which is available inside The Productive Home Solution™) to pull off the most organized move imaginable. Getting organized BEFORE you move is key. In the years that followed her move, she transformed into an even more organized person. We discuss the key principles and learning that she did to fully transform herself into a positive, productive and proactive person. She loves the idea that items in her home are auditioning for their place. Listen in to hear all about her journey and how she is now using her Education Friday Workbox® to organize her grad school journey! I love to hear how the Organize 365® products and courses evolve with your life. Kevin forgot the podcast email password years ago. He texts Gerardo stuff to tweet. He has a vague notion that Instagram and Tik Tok might not be the same thing. He doesn't answer 67% of texts. And yet, he is using #ChatGPT for lesson planning. Our good friend Angela Watson of 40 Hour Teacher Work Week fame has developed content around the same topic, although way better and detailed than we did, and our friend Donnie Piercey vanished into a #ChatGPT rabbit hole, periodically surfacing to make fun of Gerardo. But, peoples, this isn't the act of a lazy teacher. Kevin and Gerardo discuss ways in which #ChatGPT may streamline the lesson planning process for teachers who are overwhelmed and stretched too thinly (this of course means ALL teachers). Kevin discusses how his framework for teaching is more personalized having used the AI. He is able to see exactly what it is that he does, reflect, and tweak. Gerardo muses about the way that #ChatGPT may support neurodivergent educators. He recalls being paralyzed by the instructional choices he had to make as a teacher, and how it caused him to spend too much time looking for materials, and wandering off track. What do you think about #ChatGPT for lesson planning? Let us know! It boils down to this: Students can't love reading without knowing HOW to read. The good news is, teaching students how to read and creating a class community full of students who love to read can definitely happen simultaneously. And in upper grades, it absolutely needs to. Reading conferences are a great strategy for reading instruction in upper elementary, really helping you meet your students where they are and nudge their reading abilities forward. Listen in for what reading conferences ca look like, why they're such an impactful strategy for reading lessons, and how to actually fit them in with your boxed curriculum. As I thought about the pomp and circumstance surrounding the death of the Queen, the national remembrance of 9/11 and how we, as a country, grieve, it occurred to me that our losses are ranked. And those rankings reinforce our caste system, our gatekeeping. Why, for example, are flags lowered for government officials and foreign dignitaries? Are those losses more profound than the losses suffered by "regular" citizens? If we accept grief rankings, where else might we be reinforcing structures that do not honor and value people equitably? How do those systems and structures subtly influence the way we approach building classroom and campus culture? What kinds of inherent structures of honor are in place on your campus? Who do "norms" honor and center? Are there "norms" that can be rethought? Let these questions guide your reflections this week. And to support you in being a reflective practitioner, listen to Angela Watson of the 40 Hour Teacher Workweek Club in her powerful interview with Jennifer Gonzales. Being rested, balanced and regulated is THE best thing you can do to propagate a positive, supportive campus culture. Setting strong work-life boundaries is key. Finally, if you feel grief over the loss of the Queen, at the thought of 9/11 or at any other world impacting event; be true to your feelings. We feel what we feel, and that's ok. If others feel those losses less acutely, that's ok too. Reflection and acceptance are perfectly balanced, leaving no room for judgment. In this episode, I share my reflections on the first part of Angela Watson's book, Fewer Things Better. It caused me to consider what myths I have accepted as facts and what changes are imperative for the sake of my mental health and physical and well being. Are there things in your life that you wish could change but you are convinced that they are inevitable? What if we could change these things and make our lives better? Her statement, “You CAN'T do it all (and you don't have to try)” resonates strongly with me. Let's explore some of the key takeaways that I gleaned from the book. Angela Watson is here again! If you're a teacher and you don't know Angela, you need to meet her! She was a classroom teacher for 11 years and has spent over a decade as an instructional coach. She has a podcast called Truth for Teachers and created the 40 hour Teacher Workweek program to help teachers take back control of their time. In this episode, Angela and I dive into what's going on in education and the classroom post-pandemic. A survey from the NEA says that 55% of teachers are looking to retire sooner than they had the previous fall. That's a scary number when the typical attrition rate for teachers is 8%. Education Week says that teachers work an average of 54 hours a week and half of that time is spent on non-teaching time work. Angela's surveys have found that the average in her audience is 62 hours per week. Teachers know when they go into this profession that work doesn't end at 3pm, but at the same time, teachers are being taken advantage of because of their deep care for their work. What's the solution? How can teachers work fewer hours and be more productive? Angela and I have both spent a lot of time working on different angles of this issue so we chat about ways to fix this problem! It comes back to boundaries and organization. Angela's contribution to the solution is the 40 hour Teacher Workweek program. One of the things she does in this program is help teachers understand the difference between hobby work and required work. We have a long discussion about what hobby work is and how to cut back your work hours by reducing this type of work. Using Angela's program, most members have been able to cut 5 hours off of their work week in the first month in the same way that Sunday Basket® users are able to save 5 hours a week after using the system for 6 weeks! My contribution to the solution is the Education Friday Workbox®. This system compliments Angela's solution by helping you organize the administrative and paperwork side of teaching. Instead of missing deadlines and spending time looking for important papers, you have more time to focus on the lesson planning and the teaching that you love. I love talking with Angela! I hope you teachers out there find help and hope in these solutions!
