Bonus Episode: Trauma Informed Practice - FAQs

Recently we facilitated this webinar on trauma-informed practice. We had a huge response and during the Q&A we received more than 70 questions - far too many to cover in our 1- hour session! It was clear that the topic you were most interested in hearing about was behaviour management strategies. We heard you! As promised, we took those questions to our experts and we've recorded this podcast episode to answer some of them.  [Behaviour Resources] “Sitting down and reasoning is quite often very challenging for kids who have experienced trauma, and you need the foundational aspects of your relationships with educators and with others and capacity to regulate as well before you get to that higher order functioning skill of being able to reason.” - Dr Emily Berger. As you'll hear in the recording, research shows that students who have experienced trauma have diverse needs when it comes to emotional regulation.  Our behaviour management collection contains resources, blogs, and podcasts to support your trauma informed practice.  Catch up on the original Q&A webinar here. Professor Martin and Dr Berger's template for a school trauma-informed practice policy is available here.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From Child Refugee to Thriving Primary Teacher - Vivian's Story

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 23, 2021 18:09

During the pandemic, as a profession, teachers have been concerned about our students’ learning. We've been putting intervention strategies in place to prevent learning loss, whilst remediating knowledge gaps caused by periods of remote teaching and learning. Today I’m joined by Sydney teacher primary Vivian Roszkowski. As a teenager, Vivian was one of many students around the world who, even before the Covid19 pandemic, encountered enormous challenges to learning, and disruption to their education. Vivian, at age 14, became a refugee. The obstacles Vivian faced, and overcame, when trying to complete her own education, give her daily inspiration, empathy and connection to the children she’s taught though the pandemic. You’ll hear about how Vivian’s family fled war-torn Iraq in 2003, made it to Syria, also in conflict, and undocumented refugees like Vivian and her family were not allowed to work or attend school. She’ll take us through her family’s desperate attempts in applying to many countries seeking asylum, and her journey to Australia, where she had no English, was eighteen years old and had to catch up on her schooling in order to make it into her teaching course at uni. The 26th UN Climate Change Conference starts later today in Glasgow, where world leaders are meeting to discuss climate change and the future. What we can definitely expect though is large demonstrations around the world, particularly in Glasgow, and a lot of pressure on world leaders to do things like stepping up ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change education is also something that is discussed by this body, so we could see something about that on the side, but building back better after the pandemic, and taking up those opportunities to invest in clean energy and low emissions industries, is going to be on the agenda. So while we’re hearing about this a lot in the media, and maybe talking about it in our staff rooms and with families, we wanted to take a bit of time to hear from some teachers about how and where climate change comes into their classrooms. When we talk about digital literacies, often the first thing that comes to mind is educating kids about privacy, security, and cyberbullying. Today's children may be large-scale consumers of online media, but they are also creators, publishers, distributors, and critics. The digital landscape is an environment rich with possibilities. Still, it also creates an immediate, practical need: Students have to know how to interact with creative work in ethical and legal ways. Copyright is becoming an essential element of digital literacy – because everyone is a publisher now. David Sohn is an attorney who has developed Copyright and Creativity - a free, open-source curriculum to help teachers navigate education on this topic. He's joined on this episode by teacher Brittany Fleming, who uses this curriculum in her classes. Thanks for listening!
