In this episode we're sharing the highlights from our recent interview with Carol Steinberg, whose children's book, Come Grandpa Meow, Let's Fly, adds a much-needed resource for families navigating the challenges of Alzheimer's and dementia. A Personal Story Sparked by Loss Carol's journey began more than 25 years ago, during her own father's struggle with Alzheimer's. She originally wrote the book as part of her grieving process, but it wasn't until she'd spent years working at both local and national Alzheimer's organizations that the story truly found its shape. The finished book beautifully balances respect, understanding, and connection for readers young and old. Empowering Children & Families One thing that sets Carol's children's book apart is its focus on empathy, understanding, and practical intergenerational activities that help children stay connected with loved ones living with dementia. As Carol says, “We need to bust the stigmas. We need the world to know that people with dementia are still people. They're still your loved ones. They may act differently—and I hope I show that in the book.” For Adults, Too Although written for children (ages 5 to 9, but suitable for older readers too!), this book is just as impactful for adults. As Vicki Tapia, AlzAuthors acquisitions editor, noted, the story “helps explain and cope with the changes that are happening [to a loved one].” Plus, the activities at the end offer concrete, research-backed ways that families can nurture connection. Recommended by the Experts Don't just take our word for it—Come Grandpa Meow, Let's Fly comes with glowing endorsements from field leaders like Teepa Snow, Dr. Daniel Potts, and people living with dementia, who praise its realism, sensitivity, and stigma-busting power. Whether you're a caregiver, educator, parent, or grandparent, Carol's book is a gentle guide to fostering compassion, understanding, and lasting memories—no matter where you or your loved one are on the dementia journey. Our guest, Jennifer Wiles, M.A., LMHC, BC-DMT, FT - Director of the HEARTplay Program and a dance movement therapist with decades of experience - joins us to discuss how children with autism process grief and how parents and others in their lives can support them. Drawing on her background in both nonverbal forms of expression and grief support, Jennifer shares compassionate, practical insights rooted in her work with families. This conversation is both timely and essential, especially during Autism Acceptance Month, as it highlights the importance of expanding how we understand and support grief beyond more traditional approaches rooted in words.  We discuss:   The importance of using direct, concrete language when talking about death  Common misconceptions about how kids with autism express grief  Why behaviors often interpreted as indifference may be expressions of deep emotion  How sensory overload and disrupted routines can intensify grief reactions  The powerful role of nonverbal communication—movement, gesture, rhythm, and ritual—in grief expression  How social stories and structured activities can prepare kids for events like funerals  Grief rituals for significant days like anniversaries and birthdays  The impact of other losses, including changes in routine, missed milestones, and the death of service animals  Resources mentioned:  Toolkit from the National Alliance for Children's Grief (NACG): A resource for supporting children of all abilities who are grieving Books:  I Have a Question About... series by Meredith Polsky & Arlen Gaines  Understanding Death and Illness and What They Teach About Life by Catherine Faherty  A Kids Book About Grief by Brennan Wood  HEARTplay Program: Free downloadable social stories and grief support  Have feedback or a story to share? All child has a crystal-clear purpose and methodology. They identify children who need support, they develop a trusted relationship with the child and the family, and they align public services around the child. Louisa and her team have achieved amazing results. In the eight years of their existence, they have worked with nearly 6000 children and 2/3 of those children are no longer at risk in their social and emotional health and around 60% have improved their school grades. Louisa also talks about the benefit of outcomes contracts and how they make space for trusted relationships and support that's tailored to individuals. This type of commissioning gives providers power and permission to do whatever it takes to help, rather than ticking activity boxes. This episode majors on something we come back to time and time again on Radical Reformers – the transformative power of relationships and trust. It's also a rallying cry to anyone thinking of making the jump into public services, as Louisa started her career in finance, before moving to policy research writing – until she decided, in her words “enough writing, time for some action”

This week on the podcast, we are happy to have Dr. Chandni Singh on the show. Dr. Singh is a licensed clinical psychologist with more than a decade of experience in diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental conditions in children, adolescents, and young adults. She is committed to providing evidence-based assessments and tailored treatment recommendations, and she strongly focuses on serving culturally and ethnically diverse communities. At West LA Neuropsychology, PC, she specializes in early diagnostic evaluations for young children and comprehensive assessments for school-aged children with neurodevelopmental challenges and co-existing mood disorders. While assessments can feel overwhelming for parents and educators who suspect that a child might be autistic, Dr. Chandni Singh breaks down the assessment process, from recognizing early signs to understanding why some children are diagnosed later than others. She explains how social and emotional challenges often become more noticeable as kids get older and why autistic traits can be mistaken for anxiety, ADHD, or other conditions. Dr. Singh also sheds some light on the gold standard tools used in evaluations, including the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), which creates structured social scenarios to observe how a child interacts. We discuss the importance of gathering input from multiple sources such as parents, teachers, and the children themselves to get a full picture of their strengths and challenges. This episode of the podcast also explores the lived experiences of autistic children and teens, with Dr. Singh highlighting the role of masking, where kids adjust their behavior to fit in but often experience exhaustion and distress as a result. She also discusses the impact of cultural background on both receiving and understanding an autism diagnosis.   Show Notes: [3:04] - Dr. Singh explains how autism diagnoses are often delayed because early strengths can mask challenges. [5:03] - Social difficulties in children can stem from autism, ADHD, anxiety, or overlapping conditions. When life throws unexpected changes at children, their reactions can range from mild uncertainty to significant distress. As parents, how we respond to their reactions shapes both their immediate coping abilities and their long-term resilience. The key to helping children navigate change lies in combining compassion with clear communication. When something unexpected occurs – whether it's a cancelled play date, a sudden move, or a change in family routine – acknowledge your child's feelings first. Their emotional response, whatever it may be, is valid and deserves recognition. While it's natural to want to fix everything for our children, sometimes changes are beyond our control. In these moments, help your children understand that while we can't always prevent changes, we can choose how we respond to them. Have honest conversations about what's happening, using age-appropriate language to explain why the change is occurring and what to expect moving forward. Remember that children take cues from their parents about how to react to unexpected situations. By maintaining calm and showing understanding while being honest about the reality of the situation, you help your children develop valuable coping skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Do you find yourself exhausted from constantly juggling everything on your own as a single parent? I know I felt that way at first…  In this episode of the Wellness Revolution podcast, divorce attorney turned co-parenting expert Morgan Foster joins me to share her top advice for navigating co-parenting challenges. We discuss letting go of things that are no longer your responsibility and focusing on the big picture of raising healthy, happy kids together. We also dive into setting clear boundaries and expectations early on, handling common co-parenting disputes, prioritizing your own self-care as a single mom, and much more. Morgan Foster is an experienced family law attorney who spent 20 years practicing in the traditional legal system, with a focus on complex divorce and custody cases. Driven by her belief that the best outcomes for families are achieved through chosen resolutions designed by clients and their partners rather than litigation, Morgan started her own company to provide alternative solutions. As a divorced mother of two young boys who has followed the process she now offers to others, Morgan enjoys a positive and supportive co-parenting relationship with her ex-husband and has observed her own children thrive through and beyond divorce.   Thank you to our sponsors: Nail Your Niche: https://ambershaw.samcart.com/products/nail-your-niche    Find more from Morgan Foster: Website: https://pivotprocess.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pivotprocess/    Find more from Amber: Instagram: @msambershaw TikTok: @msambershaw Website: ambershaw.com  Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/ambershaw    What We Discuss: 03:05 The Shift from Traditional Law to Holistic Support 06:05 Prioritizing Self-Care for Women 09:06 Empowering Independence in Parenting 12:02 Mindset Shifts for Successful Co-Parenting 20:55 Navigating Life Changes Post-Divorce 30:01 Creating Space for Change 34:09 Navigating Co-Parenting Challenges 39:43 Building a Positive Co-Parenting Relationship 52:43 Supporting Children's Emotional Well-Being   Key Takeaways:   Prioritizing self-care and making structural changes can lead to a more manageable life post-divorce, allowing for better parenting and overall well-being. In 2012, just two days before her 16th birthday, Sunnie Carney lost her father to homicide. Through her personal journey of grief, mental health struggles, and ultimately healing, she discovered a critical gap in support services - one that affected countless children in similar situations. This revelation led her to found Children of Homicide Victims (COHV) in Kansas City, an organization dedicated to restoring hope, love, and faith to children who have lost parents to violence. COHV serves children from infancy through age 17, with a particular focus on ages 8-16 - a developmental period already complicated by natural growth and change. These children often face misdiagnosis in school settings, where their trauma responses are mistaken for behavioral disorders. Through COHV's comprehensive support system, they receive academic assistance, mental health resources, and perhaps most importantly, a community of others who truly understand their experience. What sets COHV apart is its team - 75% of staff members are themselves children of homicide victims. This shared experience creates an authentic connection with the children they serve, showing them living proof that their circumstances don't define their future. The organization's name, abbreviated as COVE, reflects its mission to be a protected harbor for these young souls navigating unimaginable loss. In this powerful conversation, Sunnie shares success stories of transformation, discusses the unique challenges faced by grandparents suddenly thrust into primary caregiver roles, and explains how COHV is working to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma. Her work reminds us that while we cannot prevent every tragedy, we can create communities of support that help children not just survive their loss, but emerge as future leaders and agents of positive change. About Sunnie Carney: Founder, Executive Director Sunnie was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. She graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2017, where she was awarded a bachelor's degree in Communications, and she is currently attending the University of Missouri-St. Louis to obtain her Masters degree in Education. Sunnie has a huge heart for children. She identifies as a child of a homicide victim. Aside from COHV, she is also a member at The Refuge KC, the Youth Director of Refuge Little League Youth Ministry. Sunnie's goal is to be the voice and the light that leads people to change and the help that transforms a wounded child's heart and mind.  Links from this episode: https://www.cohvkc.com/ https://www.instagram.com/cohvkc https://www.facebook.com/cohvkc https://www.linkedin.com/in/sunnie-carney-700779183/

Today I'm talking to Katie Shepherd and Lara Paciorek from Food Explorers based out of Connecticut and Massachusetts, USA.  Katie founded Food Explorers in January 2018, after leaving a job as a Retail Dietitian with no back up plan. While that job wasn't the right fit, Katie discovered the joys of children's cooking classes and how it combined her love of food and working with children. Food Explorers started as a little side dream, and has a grown in a full-time, ever-growing company with multiple instructors, over 100 summer camps, and an immeasurable number of community partners, schools and recreation departments that, make the Food Explorers mission possible. After welcoming her baby boy, Jack, in July of 2021 and then embarking on the journey of baby led weaning and introducing foods and flavours, Katie dove even deeper into how our relationship with food can impact us from childhood. Working together with Lara, now the Assistant Director in the company, but previously teaching the cooking skills, the mission of Food Neutrality was introduced to their classes. They hope to always inspire kids to explore new foods and flavours, teach them valuable cooking skills and more importantly to show children that food is meant to be enjoyed, not feared. Exploring food encourages children to learn through sensory experiences, hands-on activities and working together to create delicious results. Children will have the freedom to explore thanks to their unique "food neutral" approach to teaching about food.  In the episode today, Katie and Lara talk about Food Explorers, how it came about, how they work and their passion and mission behind educating young people. It's a very inspiring business that really puts thought and consideration at the centre of teaching about relationship with food and body, also being very supportive of parents in the process. Now, that has me thinking: If this is just one state and these are the numbers, can you imagine what those waitlist numbers are worldwide?  Here's what we talk about:What is Multidimensional Grief Therapy (MGT), and how does it help children and teens process their emotions after the death of a loved one?Addressing grief in children of different agesBehavioral changes parents should look for that signal their child needs additional emotional supportSome ways parents can model healthy grieving behaviors for their childrenAnd much more! Connect with Dr. Julie Kaplow!Trauma and Grief (TAG) Center Trainings: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/c5Z2Qlg/TAGtrainingsTrauma and Grief Virtual Learning Library: https://mmhpi.org/work/trauma-grief-center/virtual-learning-library/Trauma and Grief Center | Children's Hospital New Orleans: https://www.chnola.org/services/behavioral-health/trauma-and-grief-center/Children's Hospital New Orleans: https://www.chnola.org/You don't have to grieve alone, as a coach I can help support you. Today I'm talking to Heidi Schauster, MS, RD, LDN, CEDS-S, SEP who is a nutrition therapist and Somatic Experiencing (SE)™ Practitioner who has specialised in eating and body image concerns for nearly 30 years. She provides individual and group counselling and clinical supervision/consultation and is particularly interested in the intersection between food and body concerns with trauma. Heidi considers herself a whole-self-wellness practitioner and Embodiment Warrior. She is the author of the award-winning book Nourish: How to Heal Your Relationship with Food, Body, and Self and writes the Nourishing Words newsletter on Substack.  Her most recent book is Nurture - Nurture: How to Raise Kids Who Love Food, Their Bodies, and Themselves. Heidi lives in Arlington, Massachusetts, with her partner and twin daughters when they aren't in college. She recently choreographed a modern dance piece about the “empty nest,” performed by an ensemble of women age 40+. Heidi and her family enjoy most food that is lovingly prepared, especially if it's followed by a dishwashing dance party.  In the episode today, Heidi talks about how parents can support their young children and teens in navigating a healthy relationship with food and body. She talks about responding to your individual child, and the delicate balance of providing structure with eating versus over-control. Heidi explains why it's unhelpful to have good and bad foods and how to navigate food neutrality within your family. Heidi talks about educating children around body diversity and calling out fat shaming and weight stigma. She explains about how we will be imperfect as parents and get it wrong, when navigating all of this. Heidi helpfully normalises how many parents are dealing with their own food issues and how they can still helpfully support their children. She deeply advocates for food as pleasure and nourishment – for connection and joy, in addition to nutrition. So much packed into the episode. I hope that you enjoy it.   To find out more about Heidi: - Official site: www.anourishingword.com   Substack: https://heidischauster.substack.com/ LinkedIn: @nourishingwords Instagram: @nourishingwords Pinterest: @NourishingWordsHeidiSchauster Facebook: @NourishingWords     Harriet Frew's current offers: - Online 10 Steps to Intuitive Eating Course https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/online-courses.html Online Breaking Free from Bulimia  https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/online-courses.html Eating Disorders Training for Professionals https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/eating-disorders-training-with-harriet-frew.html Body Image Training for Professionals https://www.theeatingdisordertherapist.co.uk/body-image-training-with-harriet-frew.html

SummaryIn this episode of The Wellness Matters Podcast, I met up with Aypril Porter, a human design life coach and author of the book Parenting the Child You Have. We discussed the importance of living an authentic life and using human design as a tool to understand ourselves and our children. We explore the different energy types in human design (generator, manifesting generator, projector, manifestor, and reflector) and provide parenting tips for each type. Aypril emphasizes the need for parents to understand and honor their child's unique energy type and to create an environment that supports their individual needs. In this conversation, Aypril and I discuss the importance of understanding a child's human design chart and how it can help parents better support their children. By doing so, they can give their children the best gift of allowing them to be their authentic selves.TakeawaysLiving an authentic life is essential for avoiding burnout and dissatisfaction.Human design is a tool that can help us understand ourselves and our children on an energetic level. Each energy type (generator, manifesting generator, projector, manifestor, reflector) has unique characteristics and needs.Parents should honor and support their child's energy type, providing the necessary space, invitations, and information.Understanding and embracing our children's energy types can lead to better relationships and a more harmonious family dynamic. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Liam: Hello, I know you always stay up to date on the latest health tech so I am curious how far away you think we are from having a technology that would constantly monitor our bodies and give us the information that the Big 5 labs do but provide it every day. I understand this is speculative but you of all people would have a good guess as to how long it will take to get to that point. Thanks!   Kavita: Hello Dr. Cabral, I have a BIG question for you. A couple of years back I was asked to start taking blood pressure medication as my blood pressure was high. Please don't ask me if I have a record of my diastolic/systolic numbers because I don't. I did not want to get on any medication and went a different route as with a lot of things I do in my life :) That is why I am a dedicated listener/ follower of your podcast. I don't trust conventional medicine and love to hear it every time you say it on the podcast!! It just reaffirms my belief. So as far as dealing with my BP I started cutting down on processed food and also started adding less salt to my food. I use Himalayan Pink salt/ Redmond Salt/ Celtic sea salt in rotation. My husband and I also do intermittent fasting and don't eat aft   Leila: Hello, I had a CT done of my abdomen a couple months ago and everything was fine but they mentioned a hemangioma. I have known about this already and had a follow up MRI years ago and they said that was what it was. I read the report and it said 10cm and I'm pretty sure, without seeing my papers, that it was smaller back then. I am going to follow up with my primary, but do you have any suggestions on things I can do to support this? Thank you!   Kelsi: hi dr. cabral! is there any chance you could do a product review on ZeroAcre oil? a lot of high profile restaurants are switching to this ‘fry-safe' oil and moving away from seed oils. i'm curious to know as id like to be able to go to places like CAVA and get a salad without inflammatory oils. thanks!   Erin: Hello! So grateful for your help...I know you can't do medical diagnostics or anything like that but I know you have younger kids and was curious what you would do. Within the past 6 months my 7 year old got hand, foot and mouth then a month or so later drank water in the ocean on accident when it was very warm and later found out it had high bacterial levels and she ended up getting an awful stomach bug/virus. Then had flu had a week where she was well then caught strep throat. All this to ask...what can I do going forward. Her immune system is run down but I am just trying to figure an overall plan to get her back strong and a solid immune system.
