In 2019, Cyntoia Brown Long's story captured our collective interest. Fifteen years into a life sentence for killing a man when she was 16-years-old, advocates ranging from Kim Kardashian and Rihanna to lawmakers to the general population advocated for her release. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam granted Cyntoia clemency calling her situation a "tragic and complex case" involving sex trafficking and mandatory sentencing laws. Cyntoia joins Patrick in the Leadership Lab to discuss what she has learned about leading herself, investing in others, and working to make a difference in the world. Don't miss this powerful and informative conversation.
In former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam's new book, Faithful Presence: The Promise and the Peril of Faith in the Public Square (Nelson Books), he asks, “Do our political actions match our theology, or has our theology been taken captive to our political beliefs?”A political book that's driven by theology, Faithful Presence offers a stirring call to justice and mercy with humility. Gov. Haslam sees the “image of God” as the foundational truth that can bridge the gap in our polarized political culture. He says humility is the key to overcoming these differences—when you listen to others, and admit your faults, others will be more likely to listen to you. The only biblical way for us to walk into the public square is the way Jesus walked toward the cross. His was motivated by love for a broken and hurting people, not to be proven right, or to win the argument, or to gain power for himself.Gov. Haslam joined Collin Hansen on Gospelbound to discuss political theology, intolerance, his ideal congregation, and why Christians shouldn't give up on politics.

The question for all politicians-- and the politically engaged-- who also claim to be people of faith, is: Does your faith inform your politics, or does your politics inform your faith? It doesn't matter from which side of the aisle you ponder your political positions; it is difficult to mix your faith with your political convictions. Our greatest example could probably be President Abraham Lincoln, who lived out the gospel of grace and forgiveness to its truest application in a sin-filled world, and it cost him his life. Bill Haslam, former two-term governor of Tennessee, is a strong advocate for staying true to your faith, though it may cause you to make unpopular decisions, even within your own party. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Governor Haslam talks about his new book, "Faithful Presence: The Promise and the Peril of Faith in the Public Square." He also weighs in on the tumult around Hobby Lobby's Independence Day newspaper ad that some critics claimed was a call for a Christian government, as well as on the IRS denying tax-exempt status to the Texas based, Christians Engaged, because their biblical values were a repeat of the Republican agenda. These two examples are how politics and faith are clashing in the civic arena. And it's why people of faith need to be more involved, not less. Governor Haslam says for right now, he has no political ambitions, but he still wants to be a public servant, taking his faith boldly into the public square, and encouraging others to do the same.
Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report talks to former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam about how low taxes helped make Tennessee one of the best states for business in the USA, why red states are becoming the best states for jobs, and how faith and politics can lead to better governing. Bill shares the positive outcomes that resulted from Tennessee being one of only a few states with no income tax and how it helped it create so many new jobs. He also discusses the state of religion and politics and the effect that church attendance decline is having on our country. Bill gives his thoughts on why faith and religion don’t conflict, but help improve the quality of the public square. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
