Many people know the verse "to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). But what does living out that verse look like in dealing with a convicted murderer who has turned her life around? In this episode, Ray Notgrass discusses a real-life case when a state governor tried to apply that verse in one of the most difficult situations of his administration. In his last month in office, January 2019, Governor Bill Haslam of Tennessee announced that Cyntoia Brown would be freed from prison on August 9, 2019, 15 years to the day from when she took a man's life. Haslam had several reasons for his decision. Fifteen years was by then a typical sentence for a juvenile in such a case. In addition, the circumstances in Cyntoia's life, the context of the crime, had been horrible. Most importantly, Cyntoia had come to faith in Christ. Governor Haslam decided that Cyntoia would do more for society out of prison than she would spending decades more in prison.Watch a video interview with Cyntoia Brown Long and explore more resources at Homeschool History: https://app.homeschoolhistory.com/search?q=EHP028

Cyntoia Brown was a troubled teen who got a raw hand in life. In fact, she was at a disadvantage before she was even born, due to her mother drinking heavily throughout her pregnancy. Eventually, Cyntoia found herself in the youth criminal justice system where she escaped and began to get pimped out by a real P.O.S that went by the name of Kutthroat. One night her already miserable existence took a turn for the worst when she met 43-year-old Johny Michael Allen. Allen was a youth minister who allegedly liked to diddle kids. When he met Cyntoia in the parking of a Sonic, he allegedly propositioned her for sex. What happened next is up for debate. What we know for sure is that at some point Cyntoia popped Allen in the dome, ending his diddling days for good. Cyntoia would be arrested, tried as an adult, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison at only 16. It would be almost a decade later when her story went viral thanks to the help of celebrities like Rhianna and Kim K. She would eventually be set free and, by all accounts, she has been killing it since then! But was the killing in self-defense? Or was it just the poor choice of a very troubled teen? And how much did Cyntoia's race affect the outcome of her trial? What about the fact that Allen was a respected Christian in the Nashville community?Join the Boyz this week as we take a look at Cyntoia Brown's life and her controversial case!!

This week, Kristin starts us off with a case that’s as awful as it is important. Emmett Till was just fourteen years old in 1955, when he traveled from his home in Chicago to visit relatives in rural Mississippi. Before he left, his mother warned Emmett that Chicago and Mississippi were two different worlds. The culture was different -- the racism more intense. He’d have to be careful. But no warning could prepare Emmett for what lay ahead of him in Mississippi.   Then Brandi tells us the infuriating, but ultimately positive story of Cyntoia Brown. From the moment she was born, Cyntoia faced incredible obstacles. By the time she was a teenager, Cyntoia had been sex trafficked by an older man. When she was 16, a 43-year-old real estate broker named Johnny Michael Allen approached her in a Sonic, looking for sex. The two went back to his house, where Cyntoia felt increasingly afraid.    And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Emmett Till Murder Trial” by Douglas O. Linder for famous-trials.com “Emmett Till” entry on wikipedia “What happened to the key figures in the Emmett Till case?” by Devery S. Anderson for the Mississippi Clarion Ledger In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “A timeline of the Cyntoia Brown case, conviction and successful bid for clemency” by Jon Garcia, The Tennessean “Who was Cyntoia Brown convicted of killing? At the age of 16, she was arrested for killing a man who had picked her up for sex, after she had been forced into sexual slavery as a child. Today Cyntoia Brown-Long joins us to share her experience, what has happened in the 15 years she was incarcerated, and how she won her release. In an incredible development, after a years-long campaign to win her freedom, Cyntoia was granted clemency in January after former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam commuted her sentence.
