After spending the past two months in Esther, which proved to be timely encouragement for us as we live as sojourners and exiles, we will begin a new series this Sunday. March brings us to the completion of the two-year discipleship initiative, Dwell: An Enduring & Faithful Presence. The call to Dwell has had two main components: a call to 100% engagement for those who call RHC home, and a call to help us financially prepare for the future by saving toward a more permanent home for the church. We have seen God move powerfully over the past two years. The intentionality and generosity of our members has been massively encouraging. I believe that God has used this initiative to shape our hearts and to clarify the mission and vision for Redemption Hill. The shaping impact of the Dwell initiative is not just going to be discarded once we get to April 2025 and the two years are complete. Instead, the call to Dwell: An Enduring & Faithful Presence will become a Core Value of the church, that will continue to shape us as a people looking forward. I'm excited to preach over the next month on how that value will shape us as a church: Week 1 – Dwell: Theology of Place Week 2 – Enduring: Theology of Vocation Week 3 – Faithful: Theology of Revival Week 4 – Presence: Theology of ContextualizationIn the spirit of God's call to His people in exile to seek the welfare and good of their city in Jeremiah 29, we have been sent by God to DC and the DMV at this time. My faith has been encouraged to see the faith that so many of you are showing right now. We hope to finish our two year commitments strong. We also recognized that some of you are facing job loss and uncertainty right now. While some may not be able to give anything financially, there are other ways to be part of God's work that are just as valuable. For others who are able to give, or even consider giving more in a time of need, I hope you will prayerfully consider doing so. For all of us, my hope is that the next month will help us clarify what it means that God has put us here “for such a time as this.”
DateJanuary 5, 2025SynopsisIn this sermon, we explore how God's faithfulness mirrors the constancy of stars in the night sky. Drawing on the Epiphany story of the magi following the star to Jesus, Pastor Brent illuminates how God's steady presence guides us through life's uncertainties and dark moments - just as celestial bodies have faithfully oriented travelers for millennia. Like the persistent star that led the wise men to an unexpected encounter with divine love, God's light remains constant, leading us to hope and revelation in surprising places.ReferencesScripture: Matthew 2:1–12 About The Local ChurchFor more information about The Local Church, visit our website. With so much debate, noise, arguing, and social media trolls, it's easy to get caught up with being sidetracked by things that ultimately don't matter and actually cause harm. It is not an exclusively 21st century problem. The early church wrestled with getting distracted by petty issues that only served to cause division and damage the Gospel. How do we keep main things as main things and how do we know what the main things are? That's the message from Paul's Letter to Titus.
Rector Amy Winkle preaches from Matthew 6 on how we approach Kingdcom prayer in our daily lives.
The church awaits the return of Jesus to establish his kingdom upon the earth in a final, climactic way. But it is not idle in its waiting. Rather, it remains busy, putting to work what has been entrusted to it, in order to see hearts transformed and the kingdom established. Why is change so hard? Many of us wonder, if Jesus saved me, why don't I see real change? The gospel isn't just the ABCs of faith; it's the A to Z, meant to transform every part of us. Titus 3:3-7 shows that true transformation goes beyond behavior modification—it's about gospel change. Our justification and sanctification are by Jesus' grace alone, bringing real transformation through the work of the Spirit. These aren't just theological ideas; they're the living power of the gospel that creates lasting change. Join us as we explore how being a Faithful Presence means embracing this gospel change!
Associate Priest Ginny Seibel preaches from Romans 12 and answers the question, "What does it mean to be a faithful presence post-election?"
Associate Priest Ginny Seibel preaches from Matthew 18 on Christ's emphasis of being with children.
What motivates you to be a better person? It is an important question, especially if you already know you are forgiven by Jesus and are destined for Heaven. It is a question that has been asked since the earliest days of the Church and in the earliest writings of the New Testament. In the search for an answer, how do you avoid the danger of legalism that leads to pride and self-righteousness on the one hand and lawlessness that leads to chaos on the other? Grace in action is the answer we will explore this Sunday.
David Roth preaches from Matthew 25 on finding Christ's presence with the least of these.
Have you every been around someone who makes you feel good and inspires you just by there presence? On the other hand have you ever been around someone whose very presence puts you on edge or makes you cautious? In both cases you are experiencing the power of personal presence. In Jesus we have the very presence of God powerfully demonstrated for us. But how do we experience that presence today? Let's find out!
Rector Amy Winkle and Luke Brueggemeyer from the Jubilee Council talk about reconciliation in the church and in our community through the practice of the prayer of confession and the passing of the peace.
How would you feel if something you thought was priceless turned out to be a complete fake? That's the danger Paul warns against in Titus—people falling for a counterfeit gospel that promises much but is ultimately empty. The same threat is real today—whether it's self-righteous rule-keeping or the promise of freedom in rule-breaking, any of us can be drawn in. Join us as we explore how the truth of Jesus exposes these fakes and points us to the only One who offers true life and salvation.

Rector Amy Winkle preaches on Luke 24 about the extension of the Lord's table and his faithful presence at all the tables we sit around.
Through the month of August we will help the people of RHC see how they are called to ministry and mission as individuals who are part of a church, and call them all to fight against the draw toward passive spectating. God has placed each one of us where we are and for this time. How do we live as His people? What does it mean to be citizens in Christ's Kingdom, to be salt and light for the world? We will spend our time digging into a greater understanding of our calling in Jesus.

Pastor Ryne continues our teaching series, Ruth.
This Sunday is Commitment Sunday for the Dwell Midpoint Refresh. I hope you have been prayerfully considering what God asking you to commit to in the year ahead. We're all in this together and I'm excited to see what God has for us as we all commit to join Him in His good work as we Dwell: An Enduring & Faithful Presence. Over the past two months, we have asked you to prayerfully consider two kinds of commitment: Church Engagement – our goal is to have 100% of the church engaged in some way. We provided a self-assessment to ask you to use as a tool to evaluate what God might be asking you to step into with Redemption Hill in the coming year. Financial – When a church is our home, we commit to invest our time and talent in engagement as well as our treasure, investing into God's work in and through us. We would love for all who call RHC home to make a commitment this Sunday, whether you are adjusting your previous commitment, continuing at your current rate of giving and commit to finish strong, or God may be leading you to increase your commitment. This Sunday's sermon will be based in Ephesians 2:17-22 as we explore together what makes a church a church. We will look through the New Testament to learn what a church is, and what a church does. Even if you're brand new to Redemption Hill and not quite ready to make a commitment to this church, I think this Sunday will encourage you with a recasting of the beautiful vision for what God's people can are and can be in the church and what we look to as foundational to our understanding of church at RHC.
One year ago, we started a journey together to pursue God's call to us as a church to Dwell as An Enduring & Faithful Presence in DC. The Dwell initiative is really an extension of what we have always wanted to be about – joining God in His good work in our city and throughout the DMV. We are in the midst of a Midpoint Refresh of that journey. Here's what we covered on Sunday: - The chance to gather, sing, pray, hear God's Word, and share in the Lord's Supper. - A sermon rooted in 1 Peter 2:4-12. We will see the calling of all Christians as sojourners and exiles, worshiping together as God's people and living lives in community that make an impact wherever we are. - Clarity on the vision for our church in the days ahead. - A better understanding of the Dwell Initiative. What do we mean by 100% Engagement? Why did we set the financial goals we did?

Manifesting a Faithful Presence: A Study of Daniel
How should we understand the Christian's relationship to culture? Two answers to that question - those given by H. Richard Niebuhr (1951) and James Davison Hunter (2010) - have been widely regarded as the most compelling. However, in a recent article, Professor Brad East offers a gentle critique of Niebuhr and Hunter and puts forward a proposal of his own. East suggests four modes of engagement with culture: resistance, repentance, reception, and reform. These modes, says East, are typically all at work simultaneously, and they apply in every possible historical and political context. In this episode, we discuss East's essay, evaluating the limitations of faithful presence and identifying those moments when the church's witness needs to be marked by holiness and difference.Brad East's article: https://mereorthodoxy.com/once-more-church-and-culture/
