With Tomás Nido no longer in Flushing, the player on the Mets with the most plate appearances this season and no home runs is the player who has essentially replaced him, Omar Narváez, currently 6-for-31 with his new club.Narváez has 51 home runs in his career: 12 with the White Sox, 22 in his one year with the Mariners, and 17 with the Brewers. It was, as you might guess, an inside-the-park homer according to SABR's home run database.Spalding only gave up 15 homers in 2886.1 innings as he completed 279 of his 325 career starts. A four-time 40-game winner, Spalding is indeed that Spalding, the one from the ball. Not a bad legacy for Treacey to have been the first to circle the bases against him. This is a public episode. CAN YOU DIG IT?SHAFT by Isaac Hayes (Enterprise, 1971)As a 19 year old, I didn't realize that history was being made, but when I saw Isaac Hayes on the Oscars, bedecked in chain-mail, at the keyboard, being wheeled onstage in a cloud of dry ice to sing The Theme From Shaft, I knew something was up. The chicka-chicka of the wah-wah guitar riff had already surgically implanted in my head by AM radio, along with Haye's chilled delivery of “That Shaft is a baaaad Mutha…” Together, these elements excited the entire country in new and electric ways. Richard Roundtree said years later that he had an instinct that John Shaft would certainly be the best role of his career - (Hayes was considered, but Gordon Parks wisely persuaded The Black Moses to create the indelible ambience instead) - but, he couldn't have prepared for the seismic impact that this film would deliver. Director Parks wanted to make a “fun” picture with a Black Action Hero, but Shaft transcended all that. All the creatives and many of the crew were also black; it was filmed largely in Harlem, and tapped into the prevailing Black Power aesthetic zeitgeist, and the film changed the “Blaxploitation” genre forever. Before Shaft, MGM had been struggling, but the studio was rescued by the film, which made 13 million from a half a mil budget. The soundtrack, with it's laid back, jazz infused arrangements by Johnny Allen, and bolstered by Haye's compatriots at Stax, The Bar-Kays, went platinum. In 2014 it was entered into The Library of Congress list of essential recordings. I coveted a black leather coat like the one that Shaft wore - but the closest I could get was a brown bomber jacket. Nobody was as cool as Shaft or Isaac Hayes - nobody could be. “Damn Straight!”

On this episode of the HHU Podcast SamAnt & O'God sit down with Cyntoia Brown Long.In 2006, Brown was convicted of aggravated robbery and first-degree murder for killing 43-year-old real estate agent Johnny Allen, whom she went home with after he picked her up for sex at a Sonic Drive-In in Nashville. She told police that she pulled a pistol out of her purse and fatally shot Allen because she thought he was reaching for a gun.She then fled with Allen's guns and money. She drove away in his pickup truck.Prosecutors claimed that Brown shot Allen as part of a plan to rob him, but Brown told police she was acting to protect herself. She was convicted and sentenced to life in prison over the killing. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that mandatory life sentences without parole for juvenile offenders are not constitutional, but Tennessee prosecutors successfully argued that Brown would technically become eligible for parole after 51 years, in 2055.Brown, now 31, was among more than 180 inmates serving life sentences in the state for crimes they committed as teenagers. She never testified during her trial, but during her appeals process, Brown, who had been a teenage runaway, took the stand and described how at the time of the killing, she was ensnared in an abusive relationship with a drug dealer known as Cut Throat who forced her into prostitution. Her case gained new scrutiny with the rise of the #MeToo movement, as her supporters drew attention to the case using the hashtag #FreeCyntoiaBrown. Criminal justice reform advocates portrayed Brown's case as an example of the unreasonable incarceration of a teenager who was a victim of sex trafficking."Did we somehow change the definition of #JUSTICE along the way??" Rihanna asked in a 2017 Instagram post about Brown that received nearly 2 million likes. "The system has failed," Kardashian West tweeted. While incarcerated, Brown earned her GED, finished a bachelor's degree and mentored at-risk youth."Transformation should be accompanied by hope," Haslam said when commuting her sentence to parole in January. On Tuesday, the National Women's Law Center celebrated the long legal battle that led to Brown's release, but with a cautionary note.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/mep/dashboard)
Cyntoia Brown was 16 when she was tried as an adult for a crime she indeed did commit. The real question was why and if she would be granted clemency due to her traumatic past and neurologic state. In which our heroes quantify the biggest NASCAR driver upgrades of the last 20 years and search for patterns and logic that, in hindsight, made them obvious. Plus, stories about the spectacular Johnny Allen.
This week, Kristin starts us off with a case that’s as awful as it is important. Emmett Till was just fourteen years old in 1955, when he traveled from his home in Chicago to visit relatives in rural Mississippi. Before he left, his mother warned Emmett that Chicago and Mississippi were two different worlds. The culture was different -- the racism more intense. He’d have to be careful. But no warning could prepare Emmett for what lay ahead of him in Mississippi. Then Brandi tells us the infuriating, but ultimately positive story of Cyntoia Brown. From the moment she was born, Cyntoia faced incredible obstacles. By the time she was a teenager, Cyntoia had been sex trafficked by an older man. When she was 16, a 43-year-old real estate broker named Johnny Michael Allen approached her in a Sonic, looking for sex. The two went back to his house, where Cyntoia felt increasingly afraid. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Emmett Till Murder Trial” by Douglas O. During the 1930's the Indians continued to play home games at League Park. However, Cleveland Municipal Stadium was built during this time and the team played in both places after 1932. Short lived Negro League teams also competed in Cleveland during the decade. These included the Cubs (with Satchel Paige), Stars, Giants, Red Sox and Bears. Star players for the Indians in the 1930's included Willis Hudlin, Ed Morgan, Twitchy Dick Porter, Joe Vosmik, Oral Hildebrand, Moe Berg, Willie Kamm, Frankie Pytlak, Hal Trosky, Denny Galehouse, Boze Berger, Odell Hale, Johnny Allen, Bob Feller, Ralph Winegarner, Jeff Heath, Roy Weatherly, Ken Keltner, Rollie Hemsley, Ray Mack and Lou Boudreau. Jimmy Guidry is well-known throughout Acadiana for his iconic restaurant, Hub City Diner, which features affordable and delicious comfort foods such as hamburger steak, chicken tenders with Curly Q's, omelets and all sorts of classic American diner food that pleases any palate, young or old. In this episode of Discover Lafayette, Jimmy sat down with Jan Swift and discussed his journey in the hospitality business, which began when he was ten years old and his mother bought a Dairy Queen in Opelousas. As the youngest child, his job was to pick up the trash as he rode his bike to school each morning. By the time he was twelve, he was handling money; by fourteen, he was grinding beef and helping cook menu items from scratch. As a teen, he realized how much he enjoyed helping others and working with people. A graduate of USL (now UL - Lafayette) in Marketing, Jimmy bartended for a couple of years and got his start at Uncle Pete's where he befriended another well-known restauranteur, Charlie Goodson, who has remained one of his best friends. After waiting tables at Beef & Ale, Jimmy opened the Brass Rail in 1973. He quickly opened a second bar, Mother's Mantle, which provided live entertainment six nights a week, plus Friday afternoons. The second locations of Brass Rail and Mother's Mantle were opened in Baton Rouge, and Antler's Restaurant in downtown Lafayette was then purchased and updated. Incredibly, yet another establishment followed, Boo Boo's Nightclub on the Breaux Bridge Highway, which was an 800 seat honky-tonk open on Friday and Saturday nights and featured T. K. Hulin and Johnny Allen. Mother's Mantle was owned by Jimmy Guidry, along with The Brass Rail, Boo Boo's Nightclub, and Antler's Restaurant. Back in those early days of his career, there were no opening and closing ordinances governing times of operation. So Jimmy joking stated, "We were the first to open, around 9 a.m., and the last to close, whenever the last person walked out, which could be 4 a.m. He kept a regimented schedule, rising at 10 a.m. to get to work, taking a break at 2 p.m. to work out, napping, and then getting up at 8 p.m. to get back to work. By 1981, Jimmy realized he didn't need to be in the bar business anymore and sold his interest in all endeavors. He joined Cuco's Mexican Restaurant's management team and had a fifteen-year run, first as a general manager, and then regional manager. He loved his job and attributes his experience with Cuco's and his wonderful boss as providing an outstanding training ground for learning systemized procedures for purchasing of food and equipment, leasing, and management. He was eventually ready to take on ownership of his own restaurant. In 1998, Jimmy was dining with Charlie Goodson and asked if anything in the Lafayette area was available for sale. Charlie had been an early partner in Hub City Diner with chef Pat Mould and George Graham and knew that George may be willing to sell his interest as he had been the sole owner for several years. The sale was consummated and Jimmy Guidry has been the owner of Hub City Diner since 1998. Hub City Diner is a staple for so many demographics in the community. Regular customers fall into several categories and some show up every day: entrepreneurs show up around 7 a.m. with their Wall Street Journal and study the day's news; around 8 a.m., the casual guys come in and have meetings with friends and colleagues; at 9 a.m., another group comes in for breakfast. Around 10 a.m., a group of people show up who eat two meals a day and have their first meal at the diner. It all begins again at noon, and so on. "Over the years, we've had people eat all their meals with us, seven days a week, two times per day. When we were closed for a holiday, we'd have their meals delivered." Jimmy attributes his continued success to his team, the employees who make it all happen. "You're only as good as your people." He has low employee turnover,

Over the past two years the charity Combat Stress has been running workshops across the country to help partners of veterans suffering from PTSD. But evidence suggests only a minority of partners seek support for themselves as there are many barriers to participation in workshops in the community especially if the veteran is undergoing treatment and isn’t well enough to be left. A new online programme has just been launched to address this - it’s the first of its kind in the UK and is designed to help partners who find it harder to leave the home due to carer roles, childcare and work pressures. In this final interview we hear from Elaine who was in the first cohort of the online treatment programme which finished in the summer. She’s been married for 31 years and her husband was in the military for 12 years and explains to reporter, Tamsin Smith how his PTSD dramatically worsened in 2015, almost three decades after he left the military service. The 1932 Yankees: The Story of a Legendary Team, a Remarkable Season, and a Wild World Series At the outset of the Great Depression, as FDR campaigned to replace Herbert Hoover, a baseball season was played across America. In the National League, the Chicago Cubs narrowly won the pennant thanks to the likes of Gabby Hartnett, Charlie Grimm, Billy Herman, Riggs Stephenson, Kiki Cuyler, Johnny Moore, Lon Warneke, and Guy Bush. In the American League, former Cub manager Joe McCarthy's New York Yankees ran away with the pennant, leaving Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics in the dust. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bill Dickey, Earle Combs, Tony Lazzeri, Ben Chapman, Frankie Crosetti, Joe Sewell, Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing, George Pipgras, and Johnny Allen led the way to one of the winningest teams in the early American League, overshadowed only by the 1927 Yankees. Chicago and New York then clashed in one of the most lop-sided and talked-about World Series in baseball history. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ronald A. Marvin Gaye: American singer, songwriter and record producer. Gaye helped to shape the sound of Motown in the 1960s, first as an in-house session player and later as a solo artist with a string of hits, including "Ain't That Peculiar", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", and duet recordings with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Diana Rossand Tammi Terrell, later earning the titles "Prince of Motown" and "Prince of Soul". 57. During the 1970s, he recorded the albums What's Going On and Let's Get It On and became one of the first artists in Motown (joint with Stevie Wonder) to break away from the reins of a production company. His later recordings influenced several contemporary R&B subgenres, such as quiet storm and neo soul. Following a period in Europe as a tax exile in the early 1980s, he released the 1982 Grammy Award-winning hit "Sexual Healing" and its parent album Midnight Love. 58. Aretha Louise Franklin: American singer and songwriter. Franklin began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, where her father, C. L. Franklin, was minister. In 1960, at the age of 18, she embarked on a secular career. 59. In 1967, Franklin achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "Spanish Harlem" and "Think". 60. By the end of the 1960s decade she had gained the title "The Queen of Soul". 61. Franklin eventually became the most charted female artist in the history. 62. Franklin has won a total of 18 Grammy Awards and is one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide. Franklin has been honored throughout her career including a 1987 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in which she became the first female performer to be inducted. She was inducted to the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. In August 2012, Franklin was inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Franklin is listed in at least two all-time lists on Rolling Stone magazine, including the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time; and the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. African-American Cinema 63. Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song is a 1971 American independent action thriller film written, co-produced, scored, edited, directed by and starring Melvin Van Peebles. His son Mario Van Peebles also appears in a small role, playing the title character as a young boy. It tells the picaresque story of a poor black man on his flight from the white authority. 64. Van Peebles began to develop the film after being offered a three-picture contract for Columbia Pictures. No studio would finance the film, so Van Peebles funded the film himself, shooting it independently over a period of 19 days, performing all of his own stunts and appearing in several sex scenes, reportedly unsimulated. He received a $50,000 loan from Bill Cosby to complete the project. The film's fast-paced montages and jump-cuts were unique features in American cinema at the time. The picture was censored in some markets and received mixed critical reviews. However, it has left a lasting impression on African-American cinema. 65. The musical score of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song was performed by Earth, Wind & Fire. Van Peebles did not have any money for traditional advertising methods, so he released the soundtrack album prior to the film's release to generate publicity. Huey P. Newton celebrated and welcomed the film's revolutionary implications, and Sweetback became required viewing for members of the Black Panther Party. According to Variety, it demonstrated to Hollywood that films which portrayed "militant" blacks could be highly profitable, leading to the creation of the blaxploitation genre, although critic Roger Ebert did not consider this example of Van Peebles' work to be an exploitation film. 66. Release date: April 23, 1971 / Budget: $150k (~920k today) / Gross: $4.1m (~25m today) 67. Shaft is a 1971 American blaxploitation action-crime film directed by Gordon Parks and written by Ernest Tidyman and John D. F. Black. The film revolves around a private detective named John Shaft who is hired by a Harlem mobster to rescue his daughter from the Italian mobsters who kidnapped her. The film stars Richard Roundtree as John Shaft, Moses Gunn as Bumpy Jonas, Charles Cioffi as Vic Androzzi, and Christopher St. John as Ben Buford. The major themes present in Shaft are the Black Power movement, race, masculinity, and sexuality. It was filmed within the New York City borough of Manhattan, specifically in Harlem, Greenwich Village, and Times Square. 68. Shaft was one of the first blaxploitation films, and one of the most popular, which "marked a turning point for this type of film and spawned a number of sequels and knockoffs." The Shaft soundtrack album, recorded by Isaac Hayes, was also a success, winning a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture; and a second Grammy that he shared with Johnny Allen for Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; Grammy Award for Best Original Score; the "Theme from Shaft" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and has appeared on multiple Top 100 lists, including AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs. Widely considered a prime example of the blaxploitation genre. Shaft was selected in 2000 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." 69. Release date: July 2, 1971 / Budget: 500k (~3m today) / Gross: $13m (~80m today) 70. The film was one of only three profitable movies that year for MGM, 71. It not only spawned several years of "blaxploitation" action films, it earned enough money to save then-struggling MGM from bankruptcy Television: 72. Soul Train is an American music-dance television program which aired in syndication from October 2, 1971 to March 27, 2006. In its 35-year history, the show primarily featured performances by R&B, soul, dance/pop and hip-hop artists, although funk, jazz, disco and gospel artists also appeared. The series was created by Don Cornelius, who also served as its first host and executive producer. 73. Some commentators have called Soul Train a "black American Bandstand," 74. Cornelius acknowledged Bandstand as a model for his program, but he tended to bristle at the Bandstand comparisons. 75. Cornelius, with help from Jesse Jackson, openly accused Dick Clark of trying to undermine TV's only Black-owned show, when Clark launched "Soul Unlimited". 76. Cornelius was relatively conservative in his musical tastes and was admittedly not a fan of the emerging hip hop genre, believing that the genre did not reflect positively on African-American culture (one of his stated goals for the series). 77. Rosie Perez testified in the 2010 VH1 documentary Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America that Cornelius also disliked seeing the show's dancers perform sexually suggestive "East Coast" dance moves. 78. This disconnect (which was openly mocked in an In-Living Color sketch where Cornelius and the show were lampooned as extremely old and out of touch) eventually led to Cornelius's stepping down as host in the early 1990s and the show's losing its influence. His first live appearances playing to a crowd were in 2000 where he played at local parties in his home town before moving abroad to play at clubs in both Spain and Crete. In 2004, he was invited to play at a popular local techno night called 'Refresh' where he gained a regular slot playing harder edged techno. During this time he was also invited to play at various other nights including The Vault, Soundhaus Glasgow, The Club(Club 69) Paisley and the Honeycomb in Edinburgh where he played alongside the likes of GREEN VELVET, CHRIS LIBERATOR, DAVE THE DRUMMER and hardcore legend LENNY D. A turning point in Johnny's career came in 2005 when he visited the Sonar festival and after listening to the likes of Richie Hawtin and Ricardo Villalobos, he was blown away by a whole new style of techno music and sound effects. Greatly influenced by these techno pioneers, Johnny then slowly changed his djing style to a more groove driven tech house and minimal techno which was warmly received at his gigs. In 2009, Johnny got together with fellow DJs CLUTCH SLIP and started a club night, "Hectors Discotheque", at The Club (Club69). The "Hectors" booked and played alongside the likes of ALAN FITZPATRICK, HANS BOUFFMYHRE, KYLE GEIGER and local hero ALAN BELSHAW. Venues for Hectors Discotheque changed frequently from boats, to fields, to barns, to various other Glasgow club venues, a move which kept the night innovative and fresh which seemed to appeal to the clubbers. Teaming up with fellow DJ Mark Stuart as techno duo FREEEKNIT, Johnny has also been able to showcase his turntable trickery in a fresh innovative way by using a mixture of software and hardware effects and drum machines to give the crowd something a a little less conventional than the traditional two decks and a mixer style of djing. These days Johnny can be found in the studio producing music or working on future events. He has also secured gigs at a list of radio shows and clubs in Scotland with some of the biggest names on the DJ circuit.....last year alone he played after MINUS superstar HEARTTHROB, JOSEPH CAPRIATI and SCI-TEC/MINUS JOOP JUNIOR and this year warmed up for HOBO and MATADOR(IE) in Glasgow, also from Richie Hawtins Minus Label.
