SEASON 2 - EPISODE 142 - Michael Shannon - Actor Actor Michael Shannon (THE BIKERIDERS, GEORGE & TAMMY, MAN OF STEEL) joins us in this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. We worked with Michael on REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, and we had a wonderful time catching up with him. Michael shares how he first stumbled into acting, which early-career play of his took him from a tiny theatre in Chicago to the West End and Off-Broadway, and why the experience of actors coming up today is so unlike his own. We also discuss his longtime collaborative relationship with director Jeff Nichols (Season 1, Episode 28), and we reflect on his penchant for projects concerning the end of the world. We also discuss his work in TAKE SHELTER, and we learn how Michael coped with sleeping in an abandoned building during the shoot. Throughout the conversation, Michael shares his opinions on rehearsing, remaining in character after a long day, and repetitive takes, and after learning Michael just directed his first film, we ask if his perspective as an actor has changed at all. - Recommended Viewing: TAKE SHELTER - This episode is sponsored by Profoto & Aputure

Take Shelter! As I record this coffee chat, our office is under a tornado watch! How timely? If anyone in our community finds themselves dealing with a natural disaster or unexpected event, I have created a space for us to come together and give or get support! The community was able to help victims of Hurricane Helene and now I want for all of us to be able to help or get help in those circumstances. But not all hard seasons of life are because of a natural disaster. So I am calling this a relief group. I want you to be able to raise your hand and be vulnerable to say “I need some help!” It's the Organize 365® Relief Group. I also know the value of having medical information accessible on paper in the event you need to evacuate quickly or go take care of a loved one. In episode 651 - Productive Disaster Preparation and Relief, I went over an Emergency Go Bag and a packed overnight bag/suitcase plus additional ways to just be prepared for unexpected events. In that Emergency Bag, I want you to have your medical information so I am giving away the first half of the Medical Binder. This is a way I feel I can help. Go to www.organize365.com/relief and download your free copy.  You will also get access to our community where you can connect with others who have gone through what you are going through. It's not through social media so you aren't in the public fish bowl where someone may see a post you don't want them to see, there aren't ads, cookies, or bots spying on you either. And you can ask for items you may need. The way I see it, we all have enough stuff. If someone needs something you have in storage, you can simply ship it to them. You may not really want to throw that thing away, you'd rather donate it. And nothing feels better than giving to someone in need, knowing you helped in some way.  Upcoming Episodes that will give you additional ways to be prepare: 652 - Organizing Your Role as a Power of Health Care 654 - Organizing Your Role as a Power of Attorney 655 - Organizing Your Role as the Executor of an Estate EPISODE RESOURCES: Get Your Mini Medical Binder and Join the Organize 365® Relief Group Sign Up for the Organize 365® Newsletter Did you enjoy this episode? Take Shelter of Lord Nityānanda Through The Saṅkīrtana Movement | HG Vaiśeṣika Dāsa | 1 Jan 2024

Those who take shelter of Lord Nityānanda Prabhu, who is merciful to all, He is called adoṣa-darśī. He doesn't see the faults in anyone. Adoṣa-darśī means anyone who approaches Him with some eagerness in his or her heart to serve, He empowers them and gives them pure devotional service, which is impossible to get otherwise. So the process of devotional service comes through eka-cakra and comes through Nityānanda and Gaura. Without approaching Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda, it's impossible to enter into Vṛndāvana. Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura writes in his famous bhajan about how when one dives into the ocean of the pastimes of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda, which are the pastimes of saṅkīrtana, then one comes out on the shore of the ocean of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa pastimes. So, by performing vaidhī bhakti over many, many lifetimes, one may attain Vaikuṇṭha, says Kavirāja Gosvāmī. But if one approaches Lord Nityānanda and Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu in service in the saṅkīrtana movement, then one can easily come to the highest position in the spiritual world, Goloka Vṛndāvana, where spontaneous love is flowing. Compassion is one of the features of Advaita Ācārya, and also this idea of servitude towards the Lord, where he declares, "caitanyera dāsa muñi, caitanyera dāsa," (CC Adi 6.86) that "I am a servant of Lord Caitanya. I'm the servant of Lord Caitanya. I'm the servant of Lord Caitanya. I am the servant of the servants." And this is the foundation for perfection in spiritual life—that is, to come to this position of being a servitor. Fortunately, we have Chaitanya Mahāprabhu to worship in this mood of servitorship. And there's nobody better than Lord Caitanya. He's Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa combined. Kavirāja Gosvāmī said he's the Deity of the paramahaṁsas. So if we engage ourselves in His service and emulate the mood of Advaita Ācārya, which was showing compassion to the living entities in Kali Yuga, helping to spread the saṅkīrtana movement, then through that method given to us by Advaita Ācārya, we can attain the perfection of devotional service. “You're reading these interviews [in the book The Bikeriders by Danny Lyon] and they're all interesting, but Kathy's are just fascinating. You could just tell she was a character, meaning she was just this interesting, dynamic person, a person that was trying to figure out how she found herself in this world because she really talks about walking into this bar and meeting this charismatic young bike rider. And so, it was a really beneficial crutch for me to kind of get into this world. And then before you know it, by the middle of the script, I'm writing words for Kathy that never existed. It didn't hurt that, in my research, I reached out to Danny and he turned over hours and hours of recordings. I would drive around town just listening to Kathy talk. I mean, I had this woman in my head and I felt pretty confident midway through the script that I could write in her voice. It just gave this perspective to a very masculine, aggressive subculture. It gave this feminine point of view, but to me it was just a really interesting point of view,” says writer/director Jeff Nichols about writing the character Kathy, played by Jodie Comer, in his film The Bikeriders.  In this episode of the podcast, we speak to Jeff Nichols about his departure from Southern Gothic storytelling and going deep into the world of a 1960s motorcycle club for The Bikeriders, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. We also discuss some of his other films like Loving, Take Shelter and Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey – a film Nichols thought would never get released.  “I thought Mud was a failure. We had taken Mud to the Cannes Film Festival, and although we had a really nice reception there, you know, standing ovations and whatnot – no one bought the film. And we went an entire year with no one buying that film. In fact, no one ever did buy that film. The financier put up half the money to market and distribute that film and luckily, Roadside Attractions came in and put up the other half and then it became the film that everybody knows,” says Nichols.  To hear more about Nichols's writing process, and his advice for building stories around “emotional impact,” listen to the podcast.

Just when I was in Vṛndāvana, the last class I went to, Urmilā gave the class, and that was about anger. The last comment that was made in the class was by Śrutakīrti Prabhu, who was Prabhupāda's servant for a couple of years. He said once, when Prabhupāda was in Los Angeles and he got some bad news about how the project was going in Bombay, that he picked up his beads and was chanting very animatedly, loud and he was going like this with his beads. Then Prabhupāda said, "When you become angry, this is what you do: chant very loudly." And so, just taking shelter of The Holy Name in all circumstances, as one of the admonitions given, or taking shelter of Kṛṣṇa - same thing akāmaḥ sarva-kāmo vā mokṣa-kāma udāra-dhīḥ tīvreṇa bhakti-yogena yajeta puruṣaṁ param (SB 2.3.10) - whatever condition you're in, take shelter of The Holy Name.

This week, Flick is joined by film buffs Maudie Osborne and Anthony Carew to review the latest from Jeff Nichols, who is also known for Take Shelter (2011) and Mud (2012).The Bike Riders details the decade-long story of the Midwestern bike club, the Vandals. As an outsider, Kathy observes their transformation from a haven for misfits into a notorious crime gang. This evolving identity calls the club's ideals into question, and young member Benny must choose between the allure of the Vandals and being with Kathy. The Bike Riders (2024) The team also goes on to review Yorgos Lanthimos' new, witty triptych tale, Kinds of Kindness. Teaming up again with Emma Stone after the recent release Poor Things (2023), and Efthymis Filippou, the screenwriter for his 2009 film Dogtooth, Lanthimos returns with more of his signature flavour of weird.“This is a work of audacious originality, vicious humour and balls to the wall strangeness, giving the impression there are few places the director won't go.” - David Rooney. This period crime drama has often been described as "Goodfellas with Motorcyle's" as it chronicles the saga of a Midwestern motorcycle club or "gang" in 1967 adapted from a non-fiction photo-book of the same name.  The story focuses on Kathy (Jodie Comer) who is new to this world and has fallen in love with one of the drivers, Benny (Austin Butler) the charismatic, generally quiet biker whom she falls in love with, and Johnny (Tom Hardy) the intimidating leader of this recently formed gang - each of them are loosely based on real people as are several others in this stacked cast including Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, and Norman Reedus.   As directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Nichols (Mud, Take Shelter, Midnight Special), we follow their adventures on the road and off....Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The Bikeriders is another triumph for Little Rock-born filmmaker Jeff Nichols. Inspired by and named after a 1968 photographic study of Chicago bikers by Danny Lyon, the film charts the rise and fall of not just a motorcycle gang but also an era in American history. It stars Austin Butler as young rebel Benny, Jodie Comer as his long-suffering partner Kathy, Mike Faist as Lyon and Tom Hardy as gang founder Johnny – and that's just scratching the surface of a brilliant ensemble cast. At first glance, the drama seems like a departure for Jeff, known for movies like sci-fi adventure Midnight Special and apocalyptic drama Take Shelter. Peer a little closer at his screenplay, however and you soon start to see familiar Nichols-isms. For starters, there's a “rurality” to Jeff's work too, with so many of his stories unfolding down down dusty dirt trails, in parts of America that Hollywood doesn't often turn its cameras towards. Then there's the themes of masculinity, finality and devotion that simmer beneath the surface of all his movies, and rear their heads again here.In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, we get into those recurring threads across his work, the post-Vietnam context for the film's final act, the influence of Scorsese's Goodfellas on the first act's structure and the modern male malaise that this film comments on. Be sure to watch the film before tuning in.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek.
