On Monday's Good Morning Hospitality, A Skift Podcast, Brandreth Canaley, Michael Goldin, and Jamie Lane break down three platform moves that sound host-friendly on the surface but deserve a much closer look. The conversation opens with Airbnb's first fintech product — a cancel-for-any-reason feature that auto-enrolled hosts without requiring an opt-in. Hosts still get paid, but still have to scramble. From there, the team unpacks what one week of FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States data actually tells operators about pricing strategy for the knockout rounds, with RevPAR up across all host markets but occupancy down in six of nine. They close with American Express's $700 million acquisition of TheFork and why dining reservations might be the next front in the battle for the guest relationship. Episode 177 of the Award Travel 101 podcast featured Angie Sparks and Cameron Laufer discussing a variety of points-and-miles developments, along with a relatable highlight post from member Melissa about unexpectedly helping a 20-year-old replace a totaled car. While everyone was safe, the experience led to another large purchase charged to a Capital One card, adding to a family history that includes eight vehicle purchases since 2020. The hosts also covered several notable news items, including the end of the Chase Sapphire Reserve's 150,000-point welcome offer, a new 200,000-point bonus on the Sapphire Reserve Business card, elevated 100,000-point offers on the Ink Cash and Ink Unlimited cards, a 30% Chase-to-Virgin transfer bonus, and the announcement that Philippine Airlines will join Oneworld next year. They also discussed reports that American Express may soon restrict Resy dining credits to restaurants specifically marked as eligible within the Resy app.The main topic focused on the refreshed Chase Sapphire Preferred card. New benefits include 3x points on gas and EV charging, 3x points on vacation rentals through brands such as Airbnb and Vrbo, a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck/NEXUS credit every four years, a complimentary year of Apple TV+, an increased annual hotel credit, and enhanced travel protections, all while maintaining the $95 annual fee. However, the biggest change for award travelers is the reduced Hyatt transfer ratio for Sapphire Preferred cardholders, moving from 1:1 to 4:3. Angie and Cameron explored the implications, noting that while Hyatt loyalists may find the change disappointing, the card still offers strong value for beginners and those who primarily use Ultimate Rewards with other transfer partners. They also discussed alternatives such as upgrading to the Sapphire Reserve, utilizing Bilt points for Hyatt transfers, or making a speculative transfer of Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt before the new ratio takes effect. The episode wrapped up with personal updates and strategy discussions. Angie shared that ChatGPT helped her compare transportation options and ultimately choose a Swiss Rail Pass for an upcoming trip, while also finalizing plans for Morocco. Cameron reviewed several flight options for Greece, weighing the value of different award redemptions and routing choices. The hosts concluded with a practical travel tip: always place your wallet, keys, purse, shoes, and other essentials in the same spot each night while traveling. A recent hotel fire experienced by friends reinforced how valuable this simple habit can be when an emergency requires a quick evacuation.Episode Links:Chase Ink Business Cards New OfferChase Sapphire Reserve Biz New OfferChase Sapphire Preferred RefreshPhilippine Airlines Joins OneworldAmex Resy ChangesChase to Virgin Transfer BonusWhere to Find UsThe Award Travel 101 Facebook Community. To book time with our team, check out Award Travel 1-on-1.You can also email us at 101@award.travelBuy your Award Travel 101 Merch hereReserve tickets to our Late Summer 2026 Meetup in Milwaukee now. award.travel/mke2026Our partner CardPointers helps us get the most from our cards. Watch Us On YouTube! Announcing a new, ongoing benefit for annual subscribers of our Slack community. Annual subscribers receive a free Points Path Alerts subscription OR a 30% discount on Points Path Pro. Is the golden age of points and miles ending—or is it simply evolving? This week, Ed is joined by Summer Hull and Julian Kheel to break down Chase's controversial decision to reduce Hyatt transfer ratios for Sapphire Preferred cardholders while maintaining the existing ratio for Sapphire Reserve members. The discussion goes beyond the headline change and explores what it means for the future of transferable points, premium credit cards, and loyalty programs. Is this a one-off adjustment, or the start of a broader trend where transfer ratios vary depending on which card you carry? The team also revisits Bilt 2.0 several months after launch, discussing which features have worked better in practice than they initially expected and how members are adapting to the new ecosystem. Finally, they tackle a question that has been debated for more than a decade: Are we witnessing the end of the golden era of points and miles, or just another chapter in its evolution? The conversation opens with Mews founder Richard Valtr making the case at Skift's Data and AI Summit that fragmented hotel data is the reason AI keeps cutting costs instead of driving revenue. From there Sarah and Steve dig into what Apple's rebuilt Siri means for how guests will find and interact with travel, Alaska Airlines' bet that Starlink wifi is a better loyalty driver than points for basic economy travelers, and why Delta Air Lines is expanding American Express card benefits without raising fees while every competitor goes the other direction. On Monday's Good Morning Hospitality, A Skift Podcast, Brandreth Canaley, Michael Goldin, and Jamie Lane break down what AI is actually doing to travel economics and operations right now. The conversation opens with a story that stops you in your tracks: one traveler used Claude to run 881,076 searches on Etihad Airways to find one flight. The infrastructure cost of that search exceeded the commission. From there, the team digs into Brian Chesky's move to build an AI lab outside of Airbnb and what it signals about the platform's AI strategy, before closing with a look at what real AI adoption looks like at scale through Evolve's playbook of deflecting 60% of guest inquiries without human intervention. Devon Gimbel just booked over $250,000 in travel last year using credit card points—but she's the first to tell you award travel isn't "free." It's a strategy for 10x-ing your existing travel budget by strategically matching your routine spending to the right credit cards. Since ChooseFI's original Travel Rewards 101 in 2017, the landscape has matured: annual fees are higher, issuer rules are stricter, and new players like Bilt have revolutionized the game by letting you earn points on rent and mortgage payments. Yet the fundamentals remain: with deliberate card selection and an understanding of transferable points currencies, it's still entirely possible to unlock one to two meaningful trips per year—whether that's economy flights to national parks or first-class seats to Tokyo. Key Topics Discussed 00:00:00 - Introduction and State of Travel Rewards in 2026 Brad introduces Devon Gimbel and discusses how travel rewards have evolved since ChooseFI's first Travel Rewards 101 episode in 2017. They address whether earning significant travel value is still possible despite higher annual fees and stricter rules. 00:05:30 - The Evolution of Award Travel Community Devon reflects on how the travel rewards community has matured since 2013-2014, moving from a monotone focus on premium cabin travel to showcasing diverse travel styles including domestic trips, family travel, and national park adventures. 00:11:45 - Getting Started: First Steps for Beginners Devon outlines how beginners should approach travel rewards by analyzing their top spending categories and selecting one or two intentionally chosen credit cards with strong bonus categories rather than immediately pursuing dozens of sign-up bonuses. 00:16:20 - Sign-Up Bonuses vs. Everyday Spend Strategy Discussion of the balance between chasing new card welcome bonuses and building a sustainable credit card portfolio with strong category bonuses. Devon explains why a hybrid approach works better for most people than constantly opening new cards. 00:22:15 - Understanding Bonus Categories Deep dive into how credit card bonus categories work, why they matter, and how strategic matching of spending patterns to bonus categories can dramatically increase points earning without changing spending behavior. 00:30:00 - The Power of Flexibility Brad and Devon discuss various dimensions of flexibility in travel rewards including travel dates, destinations, airports, cabin class, and types of points currencies. They share contrasting examples from their recent Japan trips. 00:38:45 - Transferable vs. Fixed Points Currencies Devon explains the critical difference between transferable points programs (Chase, Amex, Capital One, Bilt, Citi) and fixed airline/hotel programs, comparing them to Visa gift cards versus single-merchant gift cards. 00:47:30 - The Rise of Bilt Rewards Discussion of how Bilt has emerged as a major transferable points currency, offering the ability to earn points on rent and mortgage payments while providing strong transfer partners that directly compete with Chase Ultimate Rewards. 00:55:00 - Credit Card Issuer Restrictions in 2026 Devon outlines how credit card eligibility rules have tightened, including Chase's evolving restrictions and once-per-lifetime language similar to American Express, emphasizing the importance of deliberate card selection. 01:02:15 - Calculating Travel Value and Points Redemption Devon shares her methodology for calculating the value of points redemptions using her family's Lufthansa first class trip as an example, discussing the difference between 'free travel' and maximizing travel budget value. 01:12:30 - How Devon Earns 6 Million Points Annually Transparent discussion of Devon's points earning including business expenses, mortgage payments through Bilt, quarterly taxes, shopping portals, and strategic use of bonus categories, with acknowledgment that her situation differs from average users. 01:22:00 - Partnership Strategy for Couples Devon expla…

The conversation opens with a sobering security story: scammers are using real guest reservation data to launch highly targeted phishing attacks, with at least 350 hotels and vacation rentals across 50 countries already caught up. From there, the team digs into Mews and SiteMinder's new native integration, which is designed to break down the data silos holding hotels back from AI adoption, and closes with Expedia Group's partnership with IShowSpeed and what it signals about where Gen Z travel discovery is actually happening. Bilt Bulletin May 2026 | Bilt Cash, Point Accelerators, Grubhub Changes, Priority Pass Confusion & New Rent Card Options Justin Vacula of the Hurdy Gurdy Travel Podcast is joined by returning guest Darren for a May 2026 Bilt Bulletin, covering the latest Bilt Rewards updates, Bilt Cash strategy, point accelerators, rent payment options, and recent changes affecting Bilt cardholders. Justin and Darren discuss how they are using the Bilt Palladium Card, Bilt Cash, and Bilt's point accelerator system. They review their recent earning and redemption stats, look at the new tracker showing total accelerator spend, and discuss how these tools may help users. They also cover the change to the monthly $10 Grubhub credit, which moved from a balance-add gift card style benefit to a per-order discount code. Justin and Darren explain why this change may still be useful, especially now that it can stack with the American Express Gold Card Grubhub credit. The episode also addresses a brief Priority Pass restaurant access glitch, the World Legend Mastercard Taste of Priceless lounges in Hong Kong and São Paulo, with Mexico City expected soon, and new ways to pay rent with non-Bilt credit cards. One new option discussed is earning 3X Flying Blue points on rent payments with a 3% fee. Annual subscribers receive a free Points Path Alerts subscription OR a 30% discount on Points Path Pro. Hyatt's new award pricing is officially here — and travelers are still trying to figure out exactly how bad it is. This week on Miles To Go, Ed is joined by Julian Kheel from Points Path to break down Hyatt's new multi-tier award pricing system, including what changed, which properties were hit hardest, and whether this truly changes the value proposition of Hyatt loyalty. They also discuss where Hyatt still trails competitors — especially around free night certificates and "4th or 5th night free" style benefits — and why the next 12 months could be important for Hyatt's long-term strategy. From there, the conversation shifts to a surprisingly valuable new Chase offer through the Paze wallet platform, where Sapphire cardholders can currently earn up to 10x Ultimate Rewards points with select merchants. Plus, British Airways raises carrier-imposed surcharges yet again, Delta may be expanding free checked bag benefits on its credit cards, and Ed shares another frustrating round of United Wi-Fi roulette while waiting for Starlink to expand across the fleet. On this week's Good Morning Hospitality, A Skift Podcast: Hotels Edition, Sarah Dandashy and Steve Turk break down a week where three big stories all pointed at the same shift: the distribution, loyalty, and infrastructure layers of hospitality are all getting reshuffled at once. The conversation opens with Airbnb naming Andrea D'Amico, an 18-year Booking.com veteran, as its new VP of Hotels, and what that hire says about how seriously Airbnb is coming for the boutique and independent hotel market. From there, Sarah and Steve dig into why boutique brands like Room Mate Hotels are running out of room on loyalty, and what the SpaceX IPO filing reveals about how deeply STARLINK has already embedded itself into travel's connectivity infrastructure. We share how we're reshaping our points and miles strategy after Hyatt devaluations, including new card moves and the reality of planning family travel when award space disappears. We also walk through our Italy and Switzerland pivot, plus a credit score rebound that lets us apply for new cards with confidence. • choosing the Bilt Palladium for the signup bonus and transfer partners • why we skip mortgage payments through Bilt for now • using Bilt cash to activate the 3x accelerator on planned spend • targeting Japan Airlines miles and watching hard expiration rules • adding Capital One Savor for uncapped 3x groceries • pending Wells Fargo Autograph Journey verification and what we're sending • navigating Chase 5/24 and our plan to earn more Chase points via a business card • booking Hyatt stays before devaluation while keeping options open • dropping Lake Como due to missing standard award space for two rooms • deciding between Florence costs and a Switzerland-heavy itinerary • planning Rome with hotel openings still uncertain and building a backup • timing credit card applications after utilization drops and scores rebound above 800 If you listened to last week's episode where I had our very first guest on, I would love feedback if you haven't already sent it. On this special holiday episode of Good Morning Hospitality, Brandy Canaley and Michael Goldin unpack one of the biggest shifts happening in travel right now: AI-powered booking. Joined by Jason Cincotta, founder of Kismet, the conversation breaks down Google's new push into agentic hotel booking, what it means to become “AI-bookable,” and why independent hotels and vacation rentals may need to rethink how they show up online. The episode also dives into Airbnb's massive Summer Release, including boutique hotels, AI-powered review tools, airport pickups, grocery delivery, rental cars, and the company's expanding push toward becoming a full trip platform. Michael and Brandy debate whether Airbnb's latest features are meaningful product evolution or just great PR, while also exploring how AI could reshape direct bookings, loyalty, and the future of travel planning. In Episode 173 of the Award Travel 101 podcast, Angie Sparks and Cameron Laufer covered a wide range of points and miles strategies, starting with two standout community posts. Angie highlighted an important discussion about insuring a complex trip booked across multiple credit cards to maximize welcome bonuses. The group recommended considering a standalone policy through companies like Allianz and using tools such as Squaremouth to compare coverage, while also putting the most expensive trip components on the card with the strongest travel protections. Cameron shared a clever positioning flight success story where a member booked Delta flights to JFK through Air France Flying Blue after transferring Chase points during a transfer bonus, saving a significant amount of points. The discussion also touched on the importance of understanding cancellation fees across different partner programs, with Virgin Atlantic noted as a favorite for inexpensive Delta award cancellations. The episode also covered several major pieces of points and miles news, including Chase's 30% transfer bonus to Southwest, IHG's 100% bonus on purchased points, Citi's 25% transfer bonus to Wyndham, and new Qatar Airways restrictions limiting how many people can be added to family and friends redemption lists. Angie shared a recent Wells Fargo business card approval with a $500 bonus that will help offset a large pool deposit expense, while Cameron discussed receiving his Rakuten-to-Bilt transfer and reminded listeners about the updated earning structure for different Bilt status tiers. The hosts also gave personal trip updates, including Angie's evolving Morocco itinerary and Cameron's plans to lock in Hyatt stays before upcoming program changes while continuing to prepare for Greece travel. The main topic focused on “workhorse cards” — the credit cards the hosts rely on consistently for everyday spending and maximizing rewards. Cameron highlighted favorites like the Chase Ink Cash for 5x office supply spending, the Amex Gold for dining and groceries, the Citi Strata Premier for its broad 3x categories and American Airlines transfers, and even the premium Bilt Palladium setup. Angie discussed cards she uses heavily in rotation, including the Citi Custom Cash for groceries, the Hilton Surpass for earning a free night certificate through annual spend, the Venture and Venture X for simple 2x earning, the Chase Freedom Flex for rotating categories, and the Venmo card for Costco purchases that code as grocery spend. They wrapped up with a practical tip for travelers booking independent hotels abroad: always compare prices across hotel websites, portals, Booking.com, Expedia, Costco Travel, and aggregators like Trivago because rates can vary dramatically.Episode Links:Chase to Southwest BonusIHG Buy points BonusQatar RestrictionsCiti to Wyndham BonusWhere to Find UsThe Award Travel 101 Facebook Community. MTM Travel - May 7, 2026 Chase has a massive new Sapphire Reserve offer, but the rest of the episode shows why the points world feels less predictable than it used to. Shawn and Mark break down Rakuten's strange but useful Bank of America and Bilt stack, Citi ending ThankYou point sharing, the refreshed AT&T Points Plus card and Chase's quietly weaker Points Boost values. Episode Guide 0:00 Welcome to MTM Travel 2:56 Rakuten, Bank of America and bonus Bilt points 7:51 Chase Sapphire Reserve hits 150K 12:34 Chase spending offers get easier to track 13:48 Citi ends ThankYou point sharing 16:43 AT&T Points Plus gets a real refresh 20:43 Chase Points Boost gets less predictable 25:37 Final thoughts on transferable points rankings Topics Covered Rakuten is offering up to $300 back, or 30,000 Bilt points, when applying for select Bank of America cards. The Bank of America Travel Rewards card can stack its own offer with the Rakuten payout, making it a strong no-annual-fee play. Chase Sapphire Reserve now has a 150,000 point offer after $6,000 in spend in the first three months. Chase appears to be matching some recent Sapphire Reserve applicants to the new offer, with reported cutoff dates. Chase targeted spending offers are becoming easier to track after activation. Citi is ending ThankYou point sharing, removing a useful option for two-player households. The AT&T Points Plus card adds stronger AT&T discounts and keeps its no-annual-fee setup. Have you ever wondered if the advice you're following about credit cards and points is still relevant—or if the landscape has shifted enough that the old "rules" no longer apply? In this listener Q&A episode, I'm answering your questions on everything from Rakuten rewards strategy and Chase credit card approvals to hotel booking during peak travel times and whether hotel status is worth the spend. But the biggest topic I tackle is one I've been thinking about a lot lately: how my fundamental advice about earning and using points has evolved over the past decade. Listen in as I walk through why I no longer recommend Chase as the automatic starting point for everyone, why co-branded credit cards are becoming more strategically important than they used to be, and why the barrier to entry in this hobby may be lower than ever—but the bar for getting real value is actually higher. Whether you're just starting out or you've been in this space for years, this episode offers both tactical answers and a bigger-picture look at how to think about points strategy in the current landscape. If you've been transferring points to the same airline programs over and over, you might be missing out on one of the most fascinating but overlooked loyalty programs in the points world - Japan Airlines Mileage Bank. Now that Japan Airlines is a direct transfer partner of Bilt, Capital One, and Rove, accessing this program is easier than ever. But given how new this is to many of us, you may not yet be familiar with its incredibly powerful sweet spots—both for flying on Japan Airlines operated flights and for booking flights on partner airlines. In this episode, I'm joined by Michael Gandara from Nurse Michael Travels to break down how the Japan Airlines program works, highlight some of the best sweet spots for redeeming Japan Airlines miles, and talk about how to actually find and book those awards on the Japan Airlines website. Michael and I discuss what makes this program different and powerful compared to other airline loyalty programs, walk through the practical realities of searching for award space, and cover the quirks you need to know before transferring miles. Whether you've been curious about Japan Airlines miles or you're ready to start using them strategically, this episode breaks down everything you need to know to start leveraging this program effectively.
