To kick off season 5 of the Dust + Dignity Podcast we thought we would provide some context for our special season entitled: Champions of the Culture: Modern Advocates Preserving Black Music.  Dr. Campbell has again been awarded a CASAA Scholar-Advocate Fellowship to continue his research and scholarship focusing on leadership, social justice and music.  He will be using a mix of archival research, storytelling, and qualitative analysis to explore the unique ways leaders uphold Black Music. These are stories and context that are important pieces of history that need to be shared and documented.   CASAA is the Center for Anti Racist Scholarship, Advocacy, and Action at Arcadia University.

We can't discuss Black music without mentioning the drum. I'm sure this season will continue to have drum references throughout but I think it's important to discuss the origin of the instrument.Drums hold a very special place in African history and culture. For the Western world, drums are mainly relegated to the realm of entertainment, adding another musical dimension to songs and other performances. To celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's birthday Dr. Campbell explores Dr. King's “Drum Major Instinct” sermon he delivered on February 4, 1968 at Ebenezer Baptist Church. This sermon is an important lesson to understanding Dr. King's theory of service. He wanted us all to work to create a more just, democratic society and how his thoughts continue to resonate in contemporary struggles. It should come as no surprise that Massachusetts, the state which nurtured the most notorious cases of mass hysteria in American history, the Salem Witch Trials, is also the same state currently perfecting the witch hunt against vaping. On Wednesday the Massachusetts Public Health Council made permanent its ban on the sale of flavored vaping products and mandated signs warning consumers of “severe lung disease” to be posted at retail locations where unflavored vaping products might still be sold. Massachusetts is not alone as public health bureaucrats in the state of New York voted this week to extend its ban on flavored e-cigarettes, even though the ban is currently held up in court. I had the honor of chatting with Alex Clark, the CEO of CASAA.

Alex Clark, Chief Executive Officer, comes from a background in customer service and logistics. Shortly after discovering the value of Tobacco Harm Reduction, he began volunteering his time for CASAA and was appointed to serve on CASAA’s Board of Directors in 2014, and later that same year was elected as CASAA’s Legislative Director. Mr. Clark stepped down from the Board of Directors in January 2016 in order to accept a position as CASAA’s Legislative Coordinator and was promoted by the Board to CEO in March 2017. Mr. Clark is responsible for overseeing all of CASAA’s advocacy efforts.

Don't buy into silver bullet solutions. And we advocate for direct participation by consumers to their lawmakers and this is the only sort of solution that seems viable in this situation.
