Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In this solo episode, Dee Kei walks through exactly what a mixing session looks like from the moment he sits down to the moment the file goes out — no guests, no theory, just the real process he uses on every project. He covers why the very first listen always happens before a single plugin is touched, how he organizes and gain stages a session before anything else, and the order in which he builds a mix and why. He also gets into his philosophy on plugin chains, how he actually uses reference tracks without chasing them, and how he knows when his ears have stopped telling him the truth. The episode wraps with his delivery routine — what the final check looks like, how he communicates with clients on send, and why the follow-up step most engineers skip is more important than they think. If you've ever wanted to look over Dee Kei's shoulder during a real session, this is the closest thing to it.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. You don't have to agree with someone to treat them with dignity and respect. Relationships open doors, but expertise keeps you in the room. Building connections matters, but developing real skills and knowledge is what creates lasting success. Great parenting requires balance. The best parents combine discipline, guidance, and genuine connection while recognizing that every child is different. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In this solo episode, Dee Kei gets honest about something nobody in the audio world really wants to say out loud — talent is the most common thing in this industry, and it's rarely what separates the engineers who are thriving from the ones who are struggling. After years of working alongside incredibly gifted mixers who can't keep the lights on, and watching others with average ears build sustainable careers, the pattern is clear: the gap isn't in the DAW.Dee breaks down the real reasons talented engineers stay stuck — from waiting until they feel "ready," to undercharging out of insecurity, to treating their craft like a hobby instead of a business. He talks about the trap of being busy without being strategic, what it actually takes to build a referral pipeline, and why isolation might be the most career-limiting thing a mixer can do.This one is a mindset episode, but it's also practical. Every point has a fix — and none of them require you to get better at mixing.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. On this episode of The Pitch, Andy and Drew dig into two ideas that both orbit the same macro challenge: how do sports venues generate more value on the days when the stands aren't full?Andy kicks things off with Surrey County Cricket Club's move to turn the Oval into a midweek co-working destination, installing Wi-Fi and laptop-friendly desks to pull remote workers into four-day county fixtures. Drew draws the comparison to the San Diego Padres' Remote Work Wednesday experiment and the pair debate the real ROI of infrastructure investment versus a lighter-touch marketing play. The conversation quickly expands beyond simple attendance tactics. Andy pitches the idea of segmenting co-working days by industry, turning the stadium into a genuine networking event, and ultimately folding the whole concept into corporate sponsorship packages that give brands a physical home inside the venue on non-match days. Then Drew takes the mic with a pitch around legends football, asking what would happen if the one-off celebrity and former player games that clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United already run were structured into a proper secondary league, complete with tracked stats, betting markets, and miniature club contracts. Andy traces the idea back to Sky Sports' Masters Football series from the early 2000s and the pair explore how the Kings League and Baller League have already proved the appetite exists, and why a Premier League-backed version could be close to unstoppable. Finally, the duo zoom out to look at why all of this matters now, connecting stadium monetisation directly to financial fair play regulations in European football, before grounding the conversation in practical examples from Southampton FC's in-stadium pub and arcade to the Bernabeu's surprisingly affordable Starbucks.Timestamps01:30 - The Surrey Oval Co-Working Idea04:00 - Baseball Comparison and the ROI Question07:00 - Networking, Industry Days, and Segmenting the Crowd10:00 - Sponsor Suites as Co-Working Infrastructure15:30 - The Legends League Pitch18:30 - Kings League, Club Partnerships, and Defensive Moats21:00 - Stadium Revenue and the Financial Fair Play Macro24:00 - Spurs, Southampton, the Bernabeu, and What's Actually ReplicableAbout The ShowThe Pitch is the conversational show from the Sports Pundit Podcast Network, hosted by Andy Marston and Drew Rauso. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In this episode, Dee Kei breaks down how he actually thinks about mixing vocals — and it's probably not what you'd expect. Before touching a plugin, an EQ, or a compressor, the most important step is understanding the intention behind the song. Is it a club banger or an intimate bedroom record? A polished pop vocal or something raw that's supposed to feel that way? Dee explains why blindly applying mixing techniques without reading context is the number one mistake engineers at every level make. From there, he dives into the fundamentals: how low-mids shape intimacy versus energy, why most beginners over-de-ess their vocals, when heavy compression works in your favor and when it fights the song, and how vocal placement in the mix is determined by the density and genre of the track. He also gets real about something not enough people talk about — the rise of intentionally "rough" sounding mixes that are racking up streams, and what that means for how you serve your clients.Whether you're a bedroom producer mixing your first song or a working engineer looking to sharpen your instincts, this episode will shift how you approach every vocal session.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. While on a brief visit to see two of our grandsons and a side trip to Arkansas, I had the chance to watch a few exceptional college softball and baseball games along with a very tense Game 7 NBA Western Conference final. It’s time to enjoy the next couple of weeks as the window is quickly closing on the seasons for these three sports. This year’s NBA Finals began Wednesday night. The surprising San Antonio Spurs and streaking New York Knicks began their best-of-seven title series. New York came into Game 1 with an 11-game playoff winning streak. The Knicks left the Spurs’ home arena Wednesday night with a 12-game playoff winning streak. The Women’s College World Series softball best-of three finale also got underway Wednesday night in Oklahoma City. Last weekend, Texas Tech’s never-say-die Red Raiders had to fight back from the brink of elimination twice to defeat #1 seed Alabama just to reach the finals. They will now get a chance to do that once again on Thursday night and, perhaps, on Friday night. That’s because Texas Tech lost to intrastate rival Texas 7-3 in the opening game of the best of three final series. Texas is the defending national champion. On the men’s side of college bats and balls, this week marks the Super Regional round for the NCAA college baseball season. Eight winners from this weekend’s best-of-three weekend series will advance into the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska next week. There were a number of surprising winners and losers during last week’s opening round. New York’s Amazin’ Knicks have now won 12 straight playoff games! San Antonio Spurs 7’4” center Victor Wembanyama is ending his third NBA season. Much like Hall-of-Famer Shaquille O’Neal (who, by the way, played his high school basketball in San Antonio), Wemby just led his team into the NBA Finals. He is now being hailed as the top big man in the NBA. The 5-time NBA champion Spurs are much more than just a one-man show. They utilize their bench as well as any NBA team and play solid defense for the entire 48-minute game. The New York Knicks are seeking their first NBA title since 1973. To say that New York sports fans are hungry for a title is a huge understatement. “The City that Never Sleeps” is in the midst of a rather lengthy championship drought. Eli Manning’s New York Giants football last won a Super Bowl title in 2011. Baseball’s New York Yankees haven’t won the World Series since 2009. The crosstown rival New York Mets haven’t claimed a baseball title since 1986. Broadway Joe Namath was the quarterback for football’s New York Jets in their only Super Bowl victory in 1969. NBA’s New York Knicks came into the playoffs as the #3 Eastern Conference seed behind Detroit and Boston. After losing two of its first three playoff games to Atlanta in Round 1, the Knicks won the final three games to advance. They would sweep #5 seed Philadelphia and #4 Cleveland in eight straight wins to claim the NBA Eastern Conference title. San Antonio is playing in the NBA Finals for the first time since June, 2014. The path to the championship round has been increasingly difficult for the Spurs. San Antonio (the #2 seed in the Western Conference) needed just five games to dispatch the Portland Trailblazers in five games. It then took six games for San Antonio to subdue the Minnesota Timberwolves. Last weekend, the Spurs required a full seven games to win a tense Game 7 battle against the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder. Wednesday night’s Game 1 in San Antonio was won by the New York Knicks 105-95 in a game which was much closer than the final score reflected. The veteran Knicks scored the last 11 points to end the game. New York stepped-up in the final quarter to score 29 points as the younger Spurs tallied only 19 over the last 12 minutes. New York’s Villanova connection featured guards Jalen Brunson (30 points) and Josh Hart (an incredible 15 rebounds) leading a fourth quarter rally to give the Knicks their 12th consecutive playoff victory. As a result, San Antonio lost its home court advantage after that Game 1 loss. ABC will televise Game #2 at 7:30PM Friday night from San Antonio. The series moves to New York’s Madison Square Garden for Games 3 and 4 on Monday and Wednesday next week. Make sure to stick around for the post-game coverage on ESPN. The award-winning “Inside the NBA” show features NBA legends Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal breaking down the action along with host Ernie Johnson. You never know what’s going to happen. Meanwhile, in Oklahoma City… The Women’s College World Series best-of-three finals began Wednesday night. Defending national champion Texas (52-12) defeated Texas Tech 7-3 in Game 1. The Red Raiders fell to 61-9 and are on the verge of elimination once again. They have become quite familiar with this position over the past several days in Oklahoma City. The #11 seeded Red Raiders rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday to vanquish #8 national seed UCLA 8-7. On Monday, Texas Tech had to defeat #1 seed Alabama twice to earn a spot in the championship finals. The Red Raiders won the opener 5-4 over Bama by scoring a run in the bottom of the 7th inning. They also grabbed the second game 2-0 on a two-hit pitching gem by two-time college player-of-the-year NiJari Canady to earn a spot in the finals. The second seeded Texas Longhorns didn’t have an easy road into the Women’s College World Series finals, either. They had to defeat #7 Tennessee Volunteers twice on Monday to advance. Texas won the opener 5-2 and then shut-out Tennessee 4-0 later in the afternoon to advance to the championship round. The Longhorns and Red Raiders competed for the Women’s College World Series championship last year as well. Texas Tech is trying to avenge last year’s loss to Texas in the best-of-three title series. Game 2 will be played Thursday at 7PM on ESPN. A deciding Game 3, if necessary, will be played Friday night at 7PM on ESPN. What happened to the top seeds in the men’s college baseball tournament? UCLA had been ranked #1 in college baseball all season long. The Bruins were 51-6 heading into the opening round of the NCAA college baseball playoffs. They faced #4 regional seed St. Mary’s (35-25) in their opening playoff game at home last Friday. The Gaels scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to shock UCLA 3-2. On Saturday, UCLA had to score three times in the bottom of the ninth to take a 6-5 win and stay alive against 30-26 Virginia Tech. St. Mary’s and UCLA were matched again on Sunday. This time, the Gaels scored a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to end UCLA’s season with a 6-5 win. Ironically, St. Mary’s was eliminated on Sunday 5-2 by the Cal-Poly Mustangs of San Luis Obispo. Go figure. It wasn’t any better for #2 national seed Georgia Tech The 50-10 Yellow Jackets were playing at home in Atlanta and trying to advance into the Super Regional round for the first time in 20 years. Georgia Tech would have hosted a Super Regional this weekend – if only they had won their own opening round regional. The Oklahoma Sooners rallied in consecutive games to dispatch the heavily favored hometown Yellow Jackets to advance into this weekend’s Super Regional to be played in…Kansas? Kansas has rarely been known for its baseball prowess. This year’s baseball Jayhawks are now 45-16 after winning its opening round of games. KU will host Oklahoma Saturday in the Lawrence, Kansas Super Regional. The Jayhawks have made it into only one College World Series (1993) in the school’s long history. Kansas plays baseball in relatively small Hoglund Ballpark. This stadium features just 2,500 permanent seats. The school recently took down the left field wall and installed a chain link fence. That allows about 1,000 additional fans to stand or sit in their own lawn chairs in “The Backyard” to watch Kansas baseball games. Expect ticket prices in Lawrence, Kansas to be sky high for this weekend’s Super Regional. Did you pick the Trojans to make it into the Super Regionals? Last weekend, there were the Trojans from the University of Southern California, the Troy Trojans of the Sun Belt Conference, and the Little Rock Trojans from the Ohio Valley Conference. Incredibly, all three of these Trojans baseball teams will be part of the 16 squads competing in the second round “Super Regional” college playoff games this weekend. At least one Trojans team is guaranteed a spot in Omaha at the College World Series next week. The 36-30 Troy Trojans will host the Little Rock Trojans (39-26) at 4PM Friday on ESPNU. Troy shocked #5 national seed Florida 10-2 in the final game of the Gainesville Regional last week. Little Rock won the Hattiesburg Regional after #9 seed Southern Miss was sent packing after two consecutive losses. The USC Trojans (47-16) will travel across the country to play at the University of North Carolina (48-11-1) on Friday at 2PM CDT on ESPN2. Here are all eight Super Regional match-ups (first game starting times are CDT) Friday’s Opening Games: Morgantown – Cal Poly (39-22) at #16 seed West Virginia (43-15) at 11AM on ESPN2 Chapel Hill – USC (47-16) at #5 North Carolina (48-11-1) at 2PM on ESPN2 Troy – Little Rock (39-26) at Troy (36-30) at 4PM on ESPNU Auburn – Ole Miss (39-21) at #4 Auburn (42-20) at 7PM on ESPN2 Saturday’s Opening Games: Athens – #14 seed Mississippi State (43-17) at #3 Georgia (49-12) at 10AM on ESPN Lawrence – Oklahoma (36-22) at #15 Kansas (45-16) at 1PM on ESPN Austin – #11 Oregon (43-16) at #6 Texas (43-13) at 7PM on ESPN Tuscaloosa – St. John’s (36-24) at #7 Alabama (40-19) at 8PM on ESPN2 The post Enjoy A Week filled with Terrific Games! appeared first on SwampSwamiSports.com.

They discuss what actually works for getting mixing and production clients, what sounds good in theory but rarely converts, and why repeat clients and word of mouth still dominate almost everything else. The conversation covers networking events, Instagram outreach, YouTube, educational content, spec mixes, referrals, local music scenes, label relationships, free work, websites, paid ads, and cold DMs. Along the way, Dee Kei and James share personal stories from their own careers, including what helped them grow, what failed completely, and how different strategies change depending on your city, pricing, and stage of career. The bigger takeaway is that most successful audio careers are built less on “hacks” and more on trust, consistency, relationships, and staying active long enough for momentum to compound. This is a practical episode for mixers, producers, and engineers trying to figure out where to actually spend their time and energy. In this episode of Politically Uncorrect, Michael starts off by recapping his IG story from earlier in the week, touching on everything from a shooting at Cajun Eats to the surprising early playoff success of Jared McCain and the potential sweep of the Lakers. He also shares a lighter moment about somehow getting a free lunch just for existing. From there, the episode shifts into the main focus — a new system Michael created to evaluate and grade players based on their road to the NBA Finals. With nearly 80 Finals runs considered, the goal is simple: determine which paths were actually difficult and which ones were more favorable, challenging the idea that all Finals appearances should be valued equally.Michael begins unveiling the system by breaking down a few notable examples, including Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal's 2000 championship run, Nikola Jokić in 2023, and the 2020 Lakers, using each case to illustrate how context, competition, and overall difficulty can drastically change how a run should be viewed. The result is a deeper conversation about how greatness is evaluated — and why not all paths to the Finals are created equal.

In Episode 372 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu talk about how mix engineers build real confidence. They break down the difference between results-based confidence, where your confidence depends on client approval, clean revisions, or a perfect session, and a deeper confidence built through preparation, experience, systems, and consistency. The conversation covers revision notes, rejected mixes, stressful sessions, client communication, professional workflows, branding, practice, and why confidence cannot come only from good outcomes. Dee Kei and Lu also discuss faith, fear, imposter syndrome, clear conscience, and how staying calm under pressure helps clients trust you more. This episode is for engineers, producers, and creatives who want to build lasting confidence without relying on validation, luck, or every mix going perfectly. In Episode 371 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu have a more relaxed, reflective conversation about life, creativity, and staying inspired in audio. Dee Kei talks about moving through different phases as an engineer, from early excitement, to getting lost in technical details, to eventually trying to reconnect the emotional side of music with a deeper technical curiosity. They discuss gear research, learning from other engineers, Atmos and surround mixing, studio upgrades, creative plateaus, and the desire to fall back in love with mixing after feeling stuck. The conversation also opens up into fatherhood, having a third child, balancing family with a creative career, contentment versus complacency, and why responsibility can sometimes create more purpose instead of limiting ambition. This episode is part audio reflection, part life update, and part creative reset for anyone trying to stay curious, authentic, and motivated in a long-term music career.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. International Women's Month Series. ..still!Deb Curtis has built an extraordinary career leading global marketing at Amazon, shaping brands like Prime and Alexa, with chapters at American Express, L'Oréal, and beyond. But what defines her journey isn't just scale—it's a single pivot early on that changed everything. As a college freshman, a simple but profound question—what do you want your whole life to look like?—shifted her path from sports broadcasting to marketing. That moment became the foundation for a career built not on linear steps, but on bold, curious leaps.Raised by generations of strong, trailblazing women, Deb didn't just hear about possibility—she witnessed it. And today, she carries that forward with a mindset that reframes fear as fuel. Instead of asking “what if I fail,” she leans into “what if it works?”—a philosophy that has guided her biggest reinventions, from leadership roles to personal choices, including motherhood and major life moves. Her message is simple and powerful: Don't box yourself in. Let curiosity lead. Treat fear as a signal to grow, not stop. And trust yourself to move on when something no longer fits.Make "Life Choices" and other things will fall into place! This conversation is a reminder that Reinvention isn't a moment—it's a mindset.Connect with Deb:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deborah-curtis-a74841/ The Shaquille O'Neal Foundation: https://www.shaqfoundation.org Newhouse School, Syracuse University: https://newhouse.syracuse.eduTHE RE:INVENTION EXCHANGE - for more Inspired Content, Blogs, Podcasts, RE:INVENTION Virtual Chats, or to buy a copy of my book RE:INVENT YOUR LIFE! The NBA’s 82-game regular season just wasn’t enough. Thirty teams started the season way back in October. There were 14 teams sent home on vacation in early April. That left 16 still playing with a hope of claiming this year’s NBA title. About those 14 losers… “Inside the NBA” TV analysts Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Shaquille O’Neal, and host Ernie Johnson, Jr. have uttered their famous “One, Two, Three…Cancun!” vacation salute to the departing teams. In case you might be wondering, the woeful Washington Wizards lost their final ten games of the season to post a 17-65 record. They deserve the title of “Worst team in the NBA” for the 2025-2026 season. The Putrid Pacers of Indiana sputtered into second at 19-63 to finish two games behind Washington. A bronze medal goes to the Brooklyn “Nots” for this year’s lousy 20-62 final record. A draft lottery will be held May 10 to determine the actual draft order for all 30 NBA teams. The 14 non-playoff teams are the only ones with a chance to receive the #1 overall draft selection. A trio of top losers (Washington, Indiana, and Brooklyn) receive a 14% chance of emerging from a rather complicated set of ping-pong ball drawings with the #1 overall selection in the NBA Draft on June 23. The other teams in this year’s NBA draft lottery will be: Utah Jazz – 22-60 – 11.5% chance of obtaining the #1 pick Sacramento Kings – 22-60 – 11.5% chance Memphis Grizzlies – 25-57 – 9% New Orleans Pelicans – 26-56 – 6.8% (pick goes to Atlanta) Dallas Mavericks – 26-56 – 6.8% Chicago Bulls – 31-51 – 4.5% Milwaukee Bucks – 32-50 – 3% Golden State Warriors – 37-45 – 2% Los Angeles Clippers – 42-40 – 1.5% (pick goes to Oklahoma City) Miami Heat – 43-39 – 1% Charlotte Hornets – 44-38 – .5% The New Orleans Pelicans (who have perfected the art of losing) traded away their first round pick for 2026 one year ago in order to acquire the rights to 6’9” Maryland center Derik Queen in 2025. Queen started about half of the Pelicans’ games this season and averaged a pedestrian 12 points and seven rebounds per game. Decisions like that are another reason why New Orleans has failed to reach the Conference finals in every year since the team’s inception in 2002. There are 16 teams participating this week in a best-of-seven first round series The NBA Western Conference produced the two teams with the best overall records in the entire league during the regular season. Defending champion Oklahoma City won 78% of its games to finish 64-18. The Thunder are facing #8 West seed Phoenix in Round 1. The San Antonio Spurs finished second overall this year with a 62-20 record. They are playing the 7th seed Portland Trailblazers in their opening round series. Other Western Conference match-ups include #3 seed Denver Nuggets (54-28) against #6 seed Minnesota and the #4 Los Angeles Lakers (53-29) taking on the fifth-seeded Houston Rockets. In the NBA’s Eastern Conference, the top regular season team was (are you ready?) the Detroit Pistons. Motown’s favorite team posted a 60-22 record and is matched against East #8 seed Orlando in the opening round. The Boston Celtics played most of the season without star forward Jayson Tatum. He’s now back in the line-up for the playoffs. The C’s finished second in the NBA East (56-26) and are playing #7 seed Philadelphia in Round 1. New York’s Knicks finished third (53-29) in the NBA East. They are matched against #6 East seed Atlanta in the first round. The Cleveland Cavaliers came in fourth (52-30) and are playing #5 seed Toronto in another Round 1 match-up. Is LeBron James still playing basketball? Yes, indeed! The 41-year old ageless freight train still plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. He also still bowls-over defenders on his way to the basket – just like he always has. It’s hard to believe that LeBron James (even at age 41) has never averaged less than 20 points per game over any season of his 23 in the league. The rumor mill claims that LeBron isn’t sure whether this year’s NBA playoffs will be the last of his long career. You can be sure that NBC (which is now televising NBA playoff games this year) and ESPN/ABC will be rooting for LeBron’s Lakers to make a very deep run in this year’s playoffs. Teams which live by the 3-point shot… Did you know that the average NBA team attempted 40 three point field goals per game this season? I found it a bit surprising that the majority of the top ten NBA teams taking the most 3-point shots did not qualify for the playoffs. The Boston Celtics (4th in the league in 3-point shots) attempted an incredible 50 3-point shots during a 111-97 home playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers Tuesday night. Unfortunately for Celtics fans, the home team connected on just 13 of those attempts (26%). Boston took a total of 89 shots in the game. When a team attempts more than 50% of its shots from long distance, a cold shooting night generally spells doom. Here’s your three-point shooting math lesson for today. Anything above a 33.3% success rate from long-range creates more points for a team than those which convert 50% of traditional two-point baskets. However, attempting too many three point shots in a game may be an indicator that a team is lacking an effective inside presence (aka – a good center). For the record, the Eastern Conference #1 seed Detroit Pistons finished 29th out of 30 teams in 3-point attempts this season with “only” 30 per game. Boston checked-in at #4 (42 per game). Defending champion Oklahoma City was 13th with 36 long-distance tries per game. The NBA average for all shots attempted per game was 90. That means that 44% (40 of 90) shots per game have been three pointers this season. Yes, NBA teams have become quite addicted to three point shooting. Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s Victor Wembanyama! He is 7’4” tall and hard to miss – even on NBA basketball courts. San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama just received every first place vote for the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged three blocked shots and 12 rebounds per game this season. He’s no slouch on offense, either. The Spurs’ third-year big man averaged 25 points per game. San Antonio is the #2 Western Conference seed and a legitimate threat to stop Oklahoma City from repeating as NBA champions. San Antonio’s cast of characters surrounding Victor Wembanyama have been improving, too. Guards De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle score 35 points per game between them this year. The San Antonio Spurs have the ingredients to surprise many during these two months of NBA playoff action. Does any team in the NBA East have a legitimate chance to win the title? There’s no question that the Western Conference trio of OKC, San Antonio, and the Denver Nuggets are the odd-on favorites to win the NBA championship this year. Are there any legitimate threats coming out of the NBA’s Eastern Conference? The #1 Eastern Conference seed Detroit Pistons won only 14 games two years ago. This season, the Pistons won 60 to claim the top position in the East. The Pistons play exceptional team defense and possess a deep bench if the team needs a burst of scoring or a fresh defender on the court. Whether Detroit has the ability to withstand playoff pressure and adversity will be determined over the weeks to come. Boston won the NBA title just two years ago. This team still features its “Big Three” of high scoring guard Jaylen Brown, clutch shooting guard Derrick White, and All-Star forward Jason Tatum. The remainder of the Celtics line-up can look like a group of interchangeable parts. Boston’s playoff experience could lead them to the NBA Finals this year. Neither Detroit nor Boston is going to be favored in a match-up vs. the eventual NBA Western Conference winner. The Pistons or Celtics (or whichever team emerges from the NBA East) must play their best basketball of the season in the NBA Finals’ best-of-seven series just to keep it interesting. And the winner is… I feel fairly certain that the NBA Western Conference winner will emerge as the eventual league champion this season. Last year’s Oklahoma City Thunder played better than everyone for the entire season. They were not a surprise champion. If OKC can withstand Denver and San Antonio to win the Western Conference, they will likely bring a second straight NBA championship trophy home to Oklahoma. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In Episode 370 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu continue their true-or-false format and dig into even more of the beliefs, myths, and gray areas that shape music production and audio careers. This round covers everything from whether you should mix and master your own music, to whether analog gear is really better, whether Pro Tools still matters, and whether networking outweighs skill. They also get into social media, working for free early in your career, standing out in a crowded industry, perfectionism, arrangement vs mix importance, and what actually makes a great mixer. One of the strongest themes in the episode is that audio is never just technical. Great mixing is also about psychology, emotion, decision-making, and understanding how to help artists feel confident in what they are making. This is a sharp, practical episode for engineers, producers, and artists who want more nuance than the usual black-and-white advice. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In Episode 369 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu take a true-or-false format and use it to unpack some of the biggest myths and half-truths in music, mixing, and the audio industry. What starts with a Discord question about whether clients should ever receive a mix you are not proud of turns into a bigger conversation about taste, service, flexibility, and what great engineers actually do.They dig into whether natural talent is required to become great at music, whether a mix that sounds good in mono sounds good everywhere, whether subs should always be mono, whether success is measured by streams, whether artists can really make a living from Spotify, and whether you have to move to LA to make it in music. They also touch on reference tracks, client expectations, and how personal ego can distort the way people think about careers and craft. This is a fun but honest episode that mixes hot takes with real nuance, especially for engineers, producers, and artists trying to think more clearly about success, taste, and what actually matters in music. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In Episode 367 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Lu holds it down solo while Dee Kei takes time with his growing family, and uses the episode to demystify some of the most common myths in audio. He moves through recording, mixing, mastering, and broader industry misconceptions, tackling topics like expensive gear, recording levels, fixing things in the mix, room acoustics, clipping, plugin counts, reference tracks, headphones, loudness, presets, Auto-Tune, and more.Rather than overcomplicating things, Lu keeps the episode practical and direct. The message throughout is that context matters, good judgment matters, and a lot of the “rules” people repeat in audio are either outdated, oversimplified, or flat-out wrong. This is a fast, useful episode for engineers, producers, and artists who want clearer thinking and fewer myths in their workflow. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In Episode 364 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu revisit one of the most common pieces of advice in mixing: “mix fast.” While trusting your instincts and avoiding overthinking can be powerful, the guys explore the nuance behind when slowing down actually leads to better results. They discuss the value of the “next day listen,” how fresh ears can reveal problems you missed the night before, and why building extra time into your schedule can improve both your mixes and your revision process. From there, the conversation dives into practical ways to slow down intentionally, including detailed automation, vocal rides, automating effects and parallel compression, and taking the time to properly dial in EQ and compressor settings. The episode also highlights the importance of referencing and making intentional decisions rather than letting plugins or presets determine the direction of a mix. The core message is simple: instinct and speed are valuable, but great mixes often come from knowing when to pause, listen carefully, and refine the details.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. In Episode 363 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu take a deep dive into how mixing and recording have evolved from the 1950s to today. Starting with mono recordings, ribbon mics, and engineers in lab coats, they trace the journey through multitrack tape, Neve and SSL consoles, gated reverb in the 80s, the rise of Pro Tools in the 90s, the loudness wars of the 2000s, and the bedroom production boom of the 2010s.They break down how technological shifts shaped the sound of each era, from Frank Sinatra's room-driven performances to Led Zeppelin's tape saturation, Michael Jackson's SSL precision, and the hyper-loud masters of Metallica and early 2000s pop and hip hop. The conversation also explores how Napster disrupted the industry, how streaming rebuilt it, and why today's music economy is more democratized than ever. The episode closes with a forward-looking discussion on AI, Atmos, spatial audio, and whether music is truly declining or simply evolving again. Along the way, Dee Kei challenges common analog myths, including the hidden digital processing inside many classic vinyl records. If you care about how technology shapes creativity, why records sound the way they do, and where mixing is headed next, this is a must-listen episode.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In Episode 362 of the Mixing Music Podcast, hosts Dee Kei and Lu start with a wild weekend recap that includes long work hours, live sound chaos, and a massive rally in downtown Los Angeles. Dee Kei shares how he went from one gig to another while traffic was locked up, and even ended up unintentionally marching with a protest on the way to the next event. He describes the scale of the rally setup, including flying dozens of line arrays to cover an enormous crowd, and then later connects that experience to one of the core themes of the episode: fundamentals matter more than fancy gear. The main conversation is sparked by a viral-style audio story: a blind listening test where people could not reliably tell the difference between audio passed through standard copper wire, a banana, or wet mud. Dee Kei and Lu use the article as a jumping-off point to talk about how easy it is for audio culture to become obsessed with mysticism, status, and expensive objects rather than results. They point out that even when engineers care deeply about details, most listeners respond to vibe, emotion, and impact, not the mythology around cables, converters, or obscure technical flexes. From there, the episode expands into a bigger discussion about anti-intellectualism in the Zen sense, not anti-intelligence. The idea is that practical experience, experimentation, and real listening should take priority over rigid theories, cheat sheets, and secondhand rules. They talk about how knowing everything about a compressor on paper is not the same as using it well in context, and how taste and emotional translation are often more important than technical trivia. They connect this to why AI may automate some low-stakes, background-music needs, but will not fully replace the human judgment behind great mixing and music made for music's sake. The guys also get into the social side of the industry, including how insecurity can show up as a need to prove people wrong, and how being “the smartest person in the room” does not matter if you make everyone miserable. They share stories about people who are technically knowledgeable but communicate with a defensive, correcting energy that makes others want to exit the conversation. Dee Kei frames it as a lack of contentment and an obsession with being right instead of being useful.Later, they bring the conversation back to growth and practice: why daily reps matter, how to get better by accelerating mistake-making, and why it helps to mix for real people with opinions rather than only practicing in a vacuum. They talk about practical ways to practice recording and mixing when you do not have a studio, like using rehearsal spaces, booking an affordable studio day, or working with local bands in exchange for experience. Dee Kei also emphasizes a simple principle he has said before: if you want to get good, start mixing faster and start making decisive choices with intention. To close, they reflect on humility, responsibility, and long-term improvement, including an example of how top performers stay grounded under pressure, plus a nuanced comparison of how gratitude can be framed differently in American versus Japanese culture. The episode ends with a reminder to focus on the craft over the distractions, keep it fun, and keep learning.SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON FOR EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!SUBSCRIBE TO YOUTUBEJoin the ‘Mixing Music Podcast' Discord!HIRE DEE KEIHIRE LUHIRE JAMESFind Dee Kei and Lu on Social Media:Instagram: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLu @JamesParrishMixesTwitter: @DeeKeiMixes @MasteredbyLuThe Mixing Music Podcast is sponsored by Izotope, Antares (Auto Tune), Sweetwater, Plugin Boutique, Lauten Audio, Filepass, & CanvaThe Mixing Music Podcast is a video and audio series on the art of music production and post-production.
