[15:42] Usually when are drinking excessive alcohol, you are trying to numb some childhood trauma. [17:40] Tom had to leave his dysfunctional family and try to make it on his own. [20:56] Because of Tom's dyslexia, he had difficulty reading.  He bought a book to read, determined to master that skill. At the same time, he committed to exercise, all this to avoid alcohol. [30:32] Addiction to exercise can be toxic. [43:58] If your grip strength is weak, it is directly correlated with your predicted lifespan.  The greatest currency one can have is time. But given her film Nomadland has just won a sackful of BAFTAs and is nominated for six Oscars too, we thought we'd cut Chloe Zhao a little slack. To be honest, Edith just wanted to share the interview with you, so much does she love the film - which stars Frances McDormand as a woman who becomes 'houseless' and travels America following the death of her husband. We're also joined by Kevin Macdonald to discuss his new movie, The Mauritanian. Starring Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahman and Benedict Cumberbatch, The Mauritanian is based on the 2015 memoir Guantánamo Diary by Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who was held for fourteen years without charge in Guantanamo. It's scored by relative newcomer, Tom Hodge, and you'll hear examples of his music throughout the conversation.

Last month London-based Frenchman Franz Kirmann returned to his analog hardware roots for his Madrapour LP on our Ransom Note cassette sub-label BYTES. A departure from the digital sound collages of his last album Elysian Park for Denovali Records back in 2016, Franz continues his sonic exploration of the haunting and the cinematic, something he also practises in his electronic/post-classical project Piano Interrupted with composter Tom Hodge. In his own words "like a Monday this mix is a bit all over the place"; a mishmash of experimental and downtempo musings to kick off your week...

Tom Hodge and Franz Kirmann have had a long standing collaborative relationship. As Piano Interrupted, they have released three albums, Landscapes of the Unfinished, Two by Four and The Unified Field on experimental German label, Denovali Records. More recently, together Tom and Franz composed the score for brand new eight-part BBC / AMC drama McMafia starring James Norton, the first episode of which aired on BBC One on New Year's Day 2018 in the UK, and 26th February on AMC in the US. In this episode, the duo discusses how they came to write a more classic piece for the McMafia main titles after having written a number of demos that were more in line with their established pulsing, electronic sound.
