There's a reason why the British theatre maker Tim Crouch doesn't want his actors to hear this podcast — it's because they're not supposed to know anything about their role until an hour before the show. This year, Tim's award-winning play “An Oak Tree” turns 20. It's one of the strangest and most influential theatre experiments in history, and it's currently being staged at the Luminato Festival in Toronto. Each performance is completely unique, shaped by the presence of a different guest actor, including past celebrity guests like Frances McDormand, Mike Myers and Alan Cumming. Tim sits down with guest host Gill Deacon to talk about the risk in live performance, the power of not-knowing, and why this show still resonates 20 years on.

In this week's episode of On Broadway, I speak with James Magruder, author of the new book, The Play's the Thing : Fifty Years of Yale Repertory Theatre (1966-2016). The book's four chapters are dedicated to one of the Yale Rep's artistic directors to date: Robert Brustein, Lloyd Richards,Stan Wojewodski Jr., and James Bundy. Numerous sidebars—dedicated to the spaces used by the theater, the playwrights produced most often, casting, the prop shop, the costume shop, artist housing, and other topics—enliven the lavishly illustrated four-color text. The work is enlivened by interviews with some of America's most respected actors about their experiences at the Rep, including Paul Giamatti, James Earl Jones, Frances McDormand, Meryl Streep, Courtney B. Vance, Dianne Wiest, and Henry Winkler.

The blood-soaked Blood Simple represents the debuts of not only auteurs Joel & Ethan Coen, but also their star (and Joel's future wife) Frances McDormand. They don't seem to agree though with the widely-shared view that their first film was an expertly-plotted noir. It's one of their best movies, in fact. When the Coen Brothers go down to Texas to shoot a nihilistic movie about death and contract killings, classics like this and No Country For Old Men result. And considering it was an independent production without any stars, it was quite a hit. The brilliant highlight sequence is John Getz covering up what he thinks is the murder of Dan Hedaya, the man he's cuckolded. So enjoy episode #2 in Revenge Month and our 657th episode overall as we, yes ARE having a good time in our yellow suit and hat while we review Blood Simple. Well, Actually: the Sundance film festival (the "Utah/US Film Festival" as it was known at first) got its start in 1978, while the Toronto International Film Festival got its start in 1976. Also, Dessau is a neighbourhood in Austin, Texas, so the "Dessau" in the sign outside the club must refer to that. Also also, the reason Ray stops the car and runs away in shock is because he hears noise coming from the "dead" body in the back seat. Acquire outstanding beans from Sparkplug Coffee. When unpainted furniture kingpin Nathan Arizona's wife gives birth to quintuplets, HI and Ed kidnap one of the babies, leading to a chaotic and life-changing, one might say life-affirming, series of events. Are these the greatest comedies of all time?Find out!

Twenty-five years ago, director Curtis Hanson (8 Mile, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) followed up his widely acclaimed crime drama classic LA Confidential with this quirky adaptation of the Michael Chabon novel of the same name.  This tells the simple story of Professor Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) who wrote ONE great novel several years and is having.....some difficulties....writing the follow-up.  Beyond that, he has one headmaster's wife (Frances McDormand) who he's been having an affair with, a highly impressionable much younger student (Katie Holmes) who is enamored with him, a nebbishy editor/publisher (Robert Downey Jr.) who keeps hounding him for that next book, and.....a wayward student James Leer (Tobey Maguire) whom he gets mixed up with in some incident involving a dog that gets shot.  James Leer also looks up to Grady and also just might be The Next Great American Writer.  And there's more plot and several more characters to boot....plot is almost incidental as this Pittsburgh-set character comedy has more to it than plot.  How about interesting characters, comical situations, and loads of fun dialogue to boot!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay just got back from pullin' off a job at Brainerd so they can talk about the Coen Bros' crime-comedy masterpiece 'Fargo.' Andy kicks off the episode by remembering when he dragged a group of friends (and their parents) to see this R-rated chiller in theater. Then the boys indulge in a fountain of conversation...a geyser, as they talk about what is perhaps the Coens' funniest movie. Stuffed with inept criminals and all-around low lifes, the film features a never-funnier Steve Buscemi and his sociopathic partner who embark on a crime/killing spree to kidnap the wife of William H. Macy's bumbling Jerry. Fortunately, Frances McDormand's saintly Marge is on the case to pick up nightcrawlers, endless orders of fast food, and apprehend the criminals who robbed and murdered people all while ruining a perfectly beautiful day. The lying and scheming degens may be popping out of every crevice — including hotel bars at the Radisson — but Marge's resolute goodness prevails. Oh geez, just check out the episode.

Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 77 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to discuss the latest film in their Nancy Meyers series, Something's Gotta Give (2003). With her third feature film, Nancy Meyers reunited with Diane Keaton and recruited Jack Nicholson to star in a romantic comedy about famous, neurotic playwright and elder playboy, philanthropist falling in love with each other, despite being complete opposites. Considered to be the best film in her filmography, Meyers' signature attention to detail and charm is matched by two incredible performances by Keaton and Nicholson, all wrapped within a hilarious, steamy screenplay that makes this film extremely rewatchable and quotable. Ryan, Jay, and Sophia extensively dive into why they love this movie, wearing turtleneck sweaters in the summers, the birth of the Nancy Meyers' kitchen obsession, the food in the film, how time works in this story, Nicholson's star power, how Keaton's character reflects Meyers' personality, the performances of Keanu Reeves and Frances McDormand, if Keaton picks the right man at the end of the film, and a new movie franchise “pitch” for the ages. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h34m. The guys will be back next week to begin continue their series on the films of Nancy Meyers with a review of her film, The Holiday. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Every major filmmaker has to start somewhere....and this Neo-Noir thriller was the feature filmmaking debut for Joel and Ethan Coen forty years ago.  Yes the same brothers who have delivered many memorable films since then including Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou, Inside Llewelyn Davis, and No Country For Old Men for which they won Best Picture at the Oscars.  This is the simple story of four people in the heart of Texas: a bar owner (Dan Hedaya), his wife (Frances McDormand), her secret lover (John Getz), and the mysterious stranger (M. Emmet Walsh) hired by the bar owner to spy on them....and possibly more? :o Of course, things get increasingly dicey and violent from there....it's time to revisit one of the more influential thrillers of the 1980's. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
