Mahmoud Abdul Rauf was Colin before Colin, Kobe before Kobe and Steph Curry before Steph Curry. That's real. He was destined for the Hall-of-Fame until HBO and the NBA railroaded him and his career. And now Showtime is doing the same. They all owe him a public apology in my opinion as does the Big 3. Shout out to Craig Hodges, Bruce Maxwell, Colin Kaepernick and Mahmoud Abdul Rauf in particular for the STAND that they all took (and there's many others like Tommy Smith, John Carlos, Serena and Venus, Jim Brown, and Ali) against police brutality and systemic racism. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-deli/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-deli/support

How's it growing folks? Welcome back to Here Weed Go!'s first two-part episode ever! As I alluded to just now, this episode is the second part of a very special interview I did at Arte Bella of 4th Avenue with former 4-time NBA Champion and 3-point marksman Craig Hodges. If you haven't listened to the first part of our conversation, go do that, but if you'd like to listen to this episode first, here's a recap of last week: our conversation covered his first experiences with cannabis, how the NCAA and NBA treated marijuana use in the 80s, and his time with the Chicago Bulls, which resulted in his winning two titles – but also may have inadvertently led to Hodges being black-balled from the league after a visit to the White House with the team in 1992. This second half of our talk picks up with Hodges delving into why he was using cannabis at the end of his career in contrast to his days as a young high school player and eventually touches on his coaching time with the Lakers as an assistant for Phil Jackson, his involvement with marijuana advocacy now and his answer to the eternal debate: Jordan or Kobe. A big Jen Christiansen, owner/operator of Arte Bella on 4th Ave., for letting us record the episode on site, and to Downtown and D2 Dispensaries, for providing some of the iLava products mentioned in the episode. Last, thanks to Here Weed Go! Apprentice Vic Verbalaitis for editing the episode together and dealing with the myriad of technical difficulties that arose during production. How's it growing folks!? Welcome to a special, basketball-centric episode of Here Weed Go!, the podcast dedicated to all things cannabis!  In today's episode, we're joined by a special guest: 4-time NBA champion and cannabis advocate Craig Hodges. Hodges, the subject of an upcoming documentary about his life, advocacy, and social justice work, was one of the NBAs first true 3-point assassins, winning the leagues 3-point contest three years in a row, a feat matched only by Larry Bird. He still boats the single best round ever recorded in the contest, hitting 25 of a possible 30 shots. For the first part of our discussion, I ask Hodges about his time growing up in the Chicago-land area and first being exposed to cannabis and basketball. Eventually, we touch on his time at Long Beach State under legendary coach Tex Winters, the approach to cannabis in the late 70s and early 80s by the NCAA and NBA, and his now infamous trip with the Chicago Bulls to the White House after their second championship in 1991. Welcome to the latest edition of the the Unmade podcast. Today's edition features another free extract from the audio edition of my book, Media Unmade, which is published by Hardie Grant and available online and in book stores. This chapter focuses on the bubbles and the booms of Australian media in the last decade. I explore the rise and fall of group buying; the inflating content marketing bubble; and how the outdoor advertising industry reinvented itself with the help of the MOVE measurement system and digital billboards,The chapter opens just over ten years ago, on stage at Mumbrella360 in June 2011, where we gathered the bosses of the big group buying sites - Colin Fabig, Hezi Leibovich, Dean McEvoy and Billy Tucker. On stage, Tucker insisted that group buying was no bubble. Within a few months, most of the group buying brands were going out of business. There was also a boom going on in content marketing, with Craig Hodges's King Content selling to the John Croll-led Isentia at the top of the market, and the boss of CPA Alex Malley deciding that he should be the face of the accountancy profession. And then there was the decade-long rise of the outdoor advertising industry, fuelled by digital, data and private equity. If there was a single moment that set up the outdoor industry up for success, it was a gathering of the clans at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Brendon Cook, Richard Herring, Steve McCarthy, Gerry Thorley and Brian Tyquin - the godfathers of today's outdoor adveretising industry signed off on the MOVE project, led by Ian Muir and John Grono.Today's chapter is free to all subscribers. Some future chapters will only be available to paying subscribers to Unmade. For the next two weeks, I'm offering a major discount on a year's subscription, which is available via the button below. But the Chicago native wasn't invited to the Windy City's All-Star Weekend this past season. He was a key member of the early Chicago Bulls dynasty, but was not featured in The Last Dance, nor contacted about participating. Hodges has every reason to believe he has been blackballed by the NBA for his activism, which included giving a letter to then-president George H.W. Bush during this championship White House visit in the early 1990s. He tells Vik his story, and it is a story that's become more relevant than ever.

As the conversation about racial justice continues in our country, we dig in to talk about race and religious liberty. BJC Director of Education Charles Watson Jr. joins Amanda and Holly for a personal conversation about his experiences and how his work at BJC intersects with the work for racial justice. He tells his story and explains how a seminal speech at a BJC Luncheon on Juneteenth impacted the trajectory of his work at BJC. Amanda, Holly and Charles discuss how different ethnic communities view the phrase “separation of church and state” and why the work for religious freedom matters. Plus, in the third segment, they discuss how they are seeing religion respected in books and articles this week. The NBA legend and political activist shares his experience of growing up in the civil rights movement and protesting the tragic death of his friend due to police brutality during their time at Long Beach State. He looks back on the progressive ideas he suggested during his two championship seasons with the Chicago Bulls alongside Michael Jordan, that were labeled as “militant,” and the White House visit that reportedly led to being blackballed from the NBA. The Last Dance Extended Version. Buon ascolto!
