Each newborn human wires itself from its own early experience. Happy chemicals are like paving on your neural pathways, wiring you to repeat behaviors that made you feel good before. This is why our urgent motivations don't make sense to our verbal brain. Ep. 83 Show Notes Hi, Reachers, In a fascinating and thought-provoking interview with Mark Schafer, whom I see as the leading marketing experts today, he said: “The question I’m wrestling with now is that everywhere I go, marketing seems to be stuck. There are a few symptoms: People are overwhelmed by technology in marketing They are overusing technology in marketing They’re stuck in ineffective patterns Many of the companies today, either big or small, have social media departments that were established in 2010 to 2014, and I can assure you that almost none of the output these teams are producing have been updated. So much has been changed with social media during the last years. Marketing is too tech-centric instead of human-centric. We don’t want to talk with our customers anymore; we just want to monitor them on Twitter. We automate everything and we are losing our hearts, our souls, and our way. Marketing is sick right now!” Longtime readers and listeners know that I, and this podcast, is all about being customer focused. However, neither Mark Schaefer nor I think that the new marketing technology tools are bad. The opposite is true, I believe that the new technological tools and methods allow marketing communication, engagement, and is personal in a way we've never dreamt of. The point is which tools regarding customers, marketing, and sales are the best to use to maximize your entrepreneurial business. In this podcast, I ask my interviewees for their recommendation of the best marketing tool. However, I specifically tell them that I’m not asking about the latest, shiniest tool in the endless list. Entrepreneurial marketing and sales are incredibly challenging. How do you find the biggest market opportunity and need for an unfamiliar product in a market that probably doesn’t exist yet? Successful entrepreneurs and opinion leaders Joe Pulizzi, David Beebe, Vladimer Botsvadze, and Tomas Laurinavicius tell us about their experiences and beliefs about reaching the business breakthrough. Since we’re talking about the marketing and sales of an entrepreneurial business, now is a perfect time to debunk one of the greatest myths in the startup world. In a recent conversation with the marketing manager of a startup that develops and sells enterprise software, I was informed of one of the most common, yet false, axioms regarding marketing: “You need to spend big on marketing if you want to bring in the big bucks.” Wrong! The truth is marketing is all about looking at the problem your product or service solves from the point of view of your potential customers and helping them solve that problem or struggle. The tremendous change in marketing and sales channels on one hand and customers’ behavior on the other, from offline to online and social media, and from one to many to one-on-one interaction and engagement- is a blessing in disguise for entrepreneurs. Joe Pulizzi Joe Pulizzi is one of the biggest marketing influencers that helped build the new approach focusing on content as the major factor in the business and communication arena. He is founder of Content Marketing Institute, which includes the largest in-person content marketing event in the world, Content Marketing World. The company had a successful exit in June 2016. Your marketing breakthrough I’m sort of the evangelist for content marketing. I‘ve been doing this for 20 years, talking to small and big companies about how they can build audiences through valuable content creation in order to see profitable behavior changes. I started the content business in 2000, started my own company in 2007, and we just had an exit in 2016. We sold it to UBM, the largest events media company in the world, and it’s has been a pleasure working with them ! Biggest success due to the right customer approach It wasn’t just one thing. The success that we built is in bringing this community of marketers and content creators together. I remember the first day we hit 10000 subscribers, 10000 people that opted-in to receive our marketing, and when the opinion leaders like Guy Kawasaki, Seth Godin, and the like started to use the term Content Marketing, which was a phrase we started to spread around… However, everything was about creating content specifically around a customer’s problem. Recommendation of a tool for customer focus, marketing, or sales? A big change is happening for a long time now. If you go back before 1990, there were only a handful of ways your customer could get information; TV ads, magazines, newspapers, radio, billboards, fax machines, those types of things. The conversation with the customer was owned by big media companies and by brands with huge advertising budgets. And it was like that for 50 years, from 1940 to 1990. The technological advance happened, along with Google and Smart Phones, and customers gained control of their own buying journey. Because your customer can ignore us, they can ignore your advertising, they can ignore your terrible content, and they don’t care about what you want to sell. All they care about are their own needs. That’s why the number one marketing tool is still email. I would absolutely focus on email subscribers....

Tomas Laurinavicius Show Notes Tomas Laurinavicius is a lifestyle entrepreneur and blogger from Lithuania. He writes about habits, lifestyle design, and entrepreneurship. Right now, he’s traveling the world with a mission to empower 1 million people to change their lifestyle for good. Most passionate about Right now, I’m really passionate about Life Style Design and I’m trying to empower one million people to change their life style for good by providing them tools and knowledge. My definition of Life Style Design is to consciously design every single part of your life, so you don’t have to suffer at work or in your personal life. You have a choice for every single thing in your life, and the idea of life style design is really crafting the journey that you want to have. I’m finishing my book in a few of months, and next year would be dedicated to promoting the book and empowering people through the Life Style Design tools and knowledge. At the same time, I’m also trying to activate Lithuania and other countries of Eastern Europe. In Lithuania, my country, entrepreneurship is not very common and people are more reserved and they need a push. Tomas’ Career It was quite a journey. I started ten years ago, when I was bored of computer games, and I started teaching myself design and Photoshop and I got my first online clients. I was really excited about online marketing and blogging, so I started blogging while getting some freelance design clients. I moved to Denmark and then to London to get formal education and corporate job, but I felt nothing that fit my life style plans, so I switched to focus on life style design during the last two years and I started reading and studying self-improvement, learning more about entrepreneurship, and how to use all that info to serve more people. Tomas’s customers I have two audiences and they don’t really mix… I have B2B customers and I have B2C customers. My B2B customers are companies that are suffering from having the wrong message or wrong language, basically misleading communication in their business. I’m helping them with their market fit by doing key-word research, customer journey development, and by trying to create better funnels for them. That includes email marketing, social media etc. When it comes to my B2C customers, the consumers, I’m trying to empower other creators and inspire entrepreneurs to find the right customers and the right idea. To find the business that they can focus on for the next decade or two; not chase another shining startup idea and try to raise a lot of funds and then burn everything and start all over again. I’m trying to provide tools and knowledge to help them to start a life style business that they believe in and can spend a lot of time on. They don’t necessarily make millions on millions of dollars, but they need to be aligned with where they are going, what they believe in, and at the same time, serve the people that they care about. Tomas’ best advice about approaching the customers This is tricky because for every business, there is a different strategy. But at the same time, you can use the same approach, which is not to go to classical marketing and spend your advertising money on Facebook or Google. First, go where people are actually hanging out, so there are already tribes online; they are on Reddit, on Slack, they are on Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, even asking questions on Quora. These are your potential customers; the people that are asking questions that you can answer and that you can provide solutions to. I believe you first have to do a lot of underground scouting and try to connect with the people that have problems that you can solve. Once you’ll get in touch with them, you can actually understand what they really need, and make sure the product and service you provide answers that needs. And after you make sure (you know) what your customer needs
