"The Bitcoin community possesses a unique advantage that will ultimately allow us to prevail: not only do we have skin in the game, we have soul in the game. Our tribe of a few thousand cypherpunk Bitcoin maximalist fanatics stand against an empire of fiat clones, millions of faceless cogs in a soulless machine. I like our odds." — Francis, Bull Bitcoin In this episode I dive into Francis Pouliot's thought-provoking article, "The Hard Path", exploring the philosophy and challenges of building sustainable Bitcoin solutions. From the critical importance of self-custody to the ethics of taking the hard path in a fiat-dominated world, I reflect on the resilience and optimism required to shape Bitcoin's future. Make Socials Social Again! "Our philosophy with building Pubky was, all right, we're not going to say never on a server. We're going to say, use a server if you want. Don't use a server if you don't want.Either way, it's fine because no matter what happens to you, you can redefine it later. So it's just basically adding the censorship resistance, this credible exit to using servers. And that's a big part of what pub key enables that other alternatives don't really enable in quite the same way or at all."- John CarvalhoWhat does it mean to build an "atomic economy"? In this episode, I sit down with John Carvalho to explore his journey from early Bitcoin adoption to spearheading revolutionary concepts at Synonym. We delve into the challenges of decentralizing the web, redefining self-sovereignty, and creating tools that resist censorship. What could a world look like where your public key is your universal address? How do we rethink trust, tagging, and the very nature of data ownership? From the mechanics of PubKey to philosophical reflections on the future of digital society, John's contrarian perspective will challenge your mental models and leave you questioning everything from Google to governance. "Imagine waking up in a world where every piece of information you encounter is carefully filtered by faceless algorithms. Your online interactions are curated not by your preferences, but by the agendas of corporations and governments. You can only speak within the walls of platforms that commodify your every word, every click. This isn't a dystopian novel — it's the current reality of the internet."— John CarvalhoThere is something very wrong with the internet today. There are increasingly more attempts at fundamentally fixing the broken foundation, so that we can build back with user autonomy and control at its center. But what is the best path? How do we compare the strengths and weaknesses of each? And could Pubky, a new player in the game bringing the power of BitTorrent and the simplicity of a user connected web, bridge the gap between the technical foundation and how the everyday user experiences the web? We dive in today in a great article exploring how we are building the future of the web. Continuamos a subir nestes rankings.
Today, I'm talking with Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI. Mustafa is a fascinating character in the world of AI — he's been in and out of some pivotal companies like DeepMind, which he cofounded, and Google. He landed at Microsoft through a unique not-quite-acquisition deal of his latest startup, Inflection AI. As CEO of Microsoft AI, Mustafa now oversees all of its consumer AI products, including the Copilot app, Bing, and even the Edge browser and MSN — two core components of the web experience that feel like they're radically changing in a world of AI. The company has also a unique relationship with OpenAI, one that's grown more complicated of late. That's a lot of Decoder bait, and we really get into it. The Business of Meetings – Episode 199 - Tech and Israel Advocacy: A Conversation with Hillel Fuld We are honored today to engage in a discussion with the extraordinary Hillel Fuld! Hillel is a tech journalist, technology expert, and startup marketer who has been instrumental in transforming Israel from a startup to a scale-up nation. Forbes has named him Israel's top marketer. Since October 7th, Hillel has become a prominent voice, channeling his energy, time, and network toward advocating for Israel. With a social media presence reaching over 250 million people, his tweets are a powerful vehicle for his activism. Stay tuned to hear Hillel's views on tech, AI, and the current situation in Israel. Hillel's Journey Originally from New York, Hillel moved to Israel as a child. He developed a passion for technology long before it gained widespread popularity. He decided to start writing after he became bored with his first job, even though it was not a business-generating venture. Inspired by his insights, entrepreneurs began seeking his help, ultimately shaping the path leading him to where he is today. Israel's Tech Leadership Israel has risen exceptionally in the tech world. Despite all its challenges, it continues to dominate various sectors, demonstrating remarkable resilience and innovation. Navigating Anti-Israel Sentiments Anti-Israeli sentiments continue to prevail worldwide. Hillel finds it paradoxical that countries are calling for boycotts while benefiting from Israeli technology. Addressing Misconceptions and Lies Hillel passionately challenges the misconceptions and lies surrounding Israel, particularly those propagated by BDS movements. He provides counterarguments to accusations of occupation, genocide, and apartheid, shedding light on the historical context and offering a different perspective. Personal Tragedy and Advocacy A Palestinian terrorist murdered Hillel's brother, Ari. That tragic loss has fueled his commitment to advocating for Israel. Since October 7th, he has been using his platform to educate people and counter misinformation. Global Impact and Positivity Hillel's advocacy efforts have reached millions, and he has received messages from people acknowledging a shift in their understanding of Zionism. Despite the ongoing challenges, he remains dedicated to providing accurate information and spreading positivity. Historical Patterns and Clash of Civilizations Throughout history, Jewish communities have faced challenges as empires grew stronger. Eric and Hillel view the current Israeli situation as a clash between the Western world and radical Islam. Tech and AI in Warfare Modern warfare has evolved. Hillel points out that technology has played a more significant role in the current war than in any previous war. Israel has been using technologies for facial recognition in tunnels and to detect crypto fraud when people transfer money. Hypocrisy and Contradictions Hypocrisy and contradictions exist within the anti-Israel narrative. Examples include the simultaneous claims that Palestinians deserve a state while supporting violence against Jews. Resilience and Love for Life Despite all the challenges, Israelis still maintain their love for life and continue innovating and contributing positively to the world. The LGBTQ Palestine Contradiction Hillel finds it ironic that many LGBTQ individuals support Palestine, considering the dangers faced by LGBTQ individuals in Palestinian territories. Maintaining Identity and Connection to Israel Hillel advises Jewish people across the world to maintain a connection with Israel. He believes that despite the challenges, Jewish people must continue speaking up and preparing for their return to Israel. Call to Action and Support Hillel remains fully committed to the cause and would welcome the assistance of anyone else willing to contribute in a meaningful way. Play with MECLABS AI at MECLABS.com/AI (MECLABS is the parent organization of MarketingSherpa). It is hard to make this episode of How I Made It In Marketing and share it with you.Because you are professional marketers and entrepreneurs, many of you know marketing, business, and content creation better than I ever will. So I could work on this forever just to make it better, bulletproof to criticism, dare I say… perfect.Of course, then we wouldn't be able to publish regularly. Instead of the other 70 episodes we've produced so far, there would only be this one.Which brings up a great lesson I read from in a podcast guest application – “Done is better than perfect.”A truism I know I've had to live with. It applies very well to my job, as someone who wants to create awesome content, yes, but also lives in the constant reality of deadlines. In this episode, Cordula Pfluegl, Marketing Director, TNW (https://thenextweb.com/), shared the story behind that lesson, along with many more lesson-filled stories.TNW, which stands for The Next Web, is mostly known for its annual tech conference hosted in Amsterdam but is also a media company writing about technology with 1 million monthly readers. TNW is a Financial Times company. I'm sure you've heard of the 130-year-old newspaper, and it probably stuck out to you if you ever saw it, as the pink newspaper. FT is owned by Nikkei, Inc., which reported 175.2 billion yen in sales last year. For the lead-up-time to the conference, Pfluegl oversaw a team of 10 people, including the event-focused marketing coordinators and the company's brand team of designers and content creators. When marketing the annual TNW Conference, they created over 2.8 million organic impressions with user-generated content on LinkedIn alone, in the two weeks around the event.Stories (with lessons) about what she made in marketingSome lessons from Pfluegl that emerged in our discussion:Working in various industries and for different brands/products (D2C/B2B) makes you a better and more versatile marketer overall.Having built a big community doesn't mean you will be able to monetize itPractice 'in-company' and 'across-team' learning togetherHaving a clear purpose will always guide the wayMarket localization is importantDone is better than perfectRelated content discussed in this episode6 Good (and 2 Bad) B2B and B2C Value Proposition Examples (https://marketingexperiments.com/value-proposition/6-good-2-bad-b2b-b2c-value-proposition-examples)Launch and Learn: How marketers can keep up in a real-time world (https://marketingexperiments.com/social-marketing/real-time-marketing)Pfluegl's Substack (https://thisisjusthestart.substack.com/)About this podcastThis podcast is not about marketing – it is about the marketer. Donna Griffit, the Corporate Storyteller, joins Karen Rands on the Compassionate Capitalist Show to discuss the art and science of pitching investors. They delve into the essential elements of a pitch deck, including the vision statement, passion, product description, and founder story as the hook. The conversation also explores the importance of creating FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) among investors, the differences between online and in-person pitching, and the nuances of pitching to male investors as a woman. Donna Griffit's expertise as a storyteller has aided numerous Fortune 500 companies, startups, and investors in raising over a billion dollars. Her insights on raising capital for female founders have gained recognition in Forbes, and she is listed among the top 100 tech and business women speakers by The Next Web. Four takeaways: Pitching investors involves a combination of art and science, requiring excellent presentation skills, knowledge of numbers, and the ability to create FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). A compelling pitch deck should include a vision statement, passion, a clear product description, and a demonstration within a user story. Online and in-person pitching may have different dynamics and considerations that should be taken into account. The startup scene still faces a gender disparity, with a small percentage of investor funding going to female-led companies, highlighting the need to address this imbalance. Donna Griffit, Corporate Storyteller, has worked globally for over 16 years with Fortune 500 companies, Start-Ups, and investors in a wide variety of industries. Through her guidance, clients have raised over a billion dollars. She was recently featured on Forbes, where she explained how she has helped female founders raise millions from investors. Before the major social platforms launch a new product, they'll often run small experiments within a subset of their users to test it out. More often than not, the first person to spot these new products is a guy named Matt Navarra, and his mini scoops have been cited in thousands of news articles over the years. Matt got his career start running the digital communications for the UK government and then later became the director of social media for The Next Web. In 2018, he struck off his own and launched his own marketing consultancy. It was that same year that he began writing Geekout, a weekly newsletter that curates emerging news and information around the marketing industry. Within a few months it amassed thousands of subscribers, and today it drives six figures in revenue, mostly through sponsorships. In my interview with Matt, we talked about where he gets his product scoops, his audience growth strategies, and how he built a six figure newsletter business as basically a side hustle.

Show Notes: First human patients receive transfusions of lab-grown blood cells | New Atlas (01:01) For the first time ever, human patients have received transfusions of blood cells that were grown from stem cells in a lab Revolutionize blood transfusions Blood donations are life saving, but the demand outweighs the supply But only 13.6 million units of whole blood and red blood cells are collected in the U.S. in a year. According to the Red Cross, only about 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly. Nearly 16 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S. Approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U. S. An attractive alternative would be large-scale production of red blood cells in labs, which can be tuned to have whichever blood type is needed. The new clinical trial, named RESTORE, is designed to test the safety of transfusions of these manufactured blood cells, as well as how long they last in the body. Lab-grown blood is all made “fresh,” so it should all reliably last up to 120 days. For people with conditions that require regular blood transfusions, such as sickle cell, the longer lifespan of the cells should help give them longer gaps between transfusions. The RESTORE trial will involve at least 10 participants receiving “mini” transfusions of blood, containing just 5 to 10 ml (one to two teaspoons) of red blood cells. So far, two participants have received transfusions of lab-grown blood cells as part of the trial, with the scientists reporting that they have shown no untoward side effects. While this is a major milestone towards that goal, there's still much more work to do before blood transfusions are regularly lab-grown This clear window coating could cool buildings without using energy | Electrek (06:41) Scientists have used advanced computing tech and AI to design a clear window coating that could lower the temperature inside buildings. Saving a whole lot of cooling energy. Cooling accounts for about 15% of global energy consumption, and it's only going to get hotter, especially in more tropical climates. The sun's ultraviolet and near-infrared light are the parts of the solar spectrum that pass through window glass to heat an enclosed room. Why a car gets hot sitting in the sun. If you block that light energy the amount of cooling needed would be reduced According to their new paper, researchers from University of Notre Dame in Indiana and Kyung Hee University in Seoul, successfully designed a clear window coating, or “transparent radiative cooler” (TRC). According to the report, “[The team] optimized the type, order, and combination of layers using an iterative approach guided by machine learning and quantum computing, which stores data using subatomic particles” Using this quantum method allowed the team to carry out the optimization process faster. Which eventually, “produced a coating design that, when fabricated, beat the performance of conventionally designed TRCs in addition to one of the best commercial heat-reduction glasses on the market.” Through heat simulations of the TRC as a potential window material for a standard office with two windows they were able to figure out roughly the heat savings. 31.1% of the cooling energy consumption when conventional windows are used. The average annual energy saving over the surveyed U.S. cities is 50 MJ/m2 In cities with hot, dry weather the TRC can potentially save around 86.3 MJ/m2 per year. There's no indication of commercial scaling in the study, but the researchers write that the film “can be potentially scaled up for practical applications because their fabrication can be achieved using state-of-the-art deposition techniques.” Experimental breast cancer vaccine passes first human trials | New Atlas (12:19) I don't like using the term vaccine for these types of treatments. It is more of cell/protein therapy so I'll put that out there before I get into this. Up to 30% of breast cancers involve the overproduction of a protein called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). HER2-positive cancers are often more aggressive than other types of breast cancer These treatments deliver DNA blueprints for the production of certain proteins into the nucleus of a cell. The protein is then produced by the cell, triggering an immune response. This treatment in question prompts cells to produce a specific fragment of the HER2 protein. Note another reason I don't call it a vaccine: These are known as “therapeutic vaccines”, given to patients after they are diagnosed with a cancer in the hopes they help the immune system better seek and destroy certain tumors. The trial was not geared to evaluate how effective the experimental treatment is at treating breast cancer. But still in the trial there were promising signs of efficacy, with 80% of the treated trial participants surviving the full 10-year follow-up Only around 50% of patients with advanced HER2 breast cancer would generally be expected to survive more than five year Looking into the survival rate: 95.8% of females survive breast cancer for at least one year, this falls to 85.0% surviving for five years or more, and continues to fall to roughly 75% for 10 years, as shown by age-standardized net survival for patients diagnosed with breast cancer during 2013-2017 in England. A Phase 2 trial is currently underway, testing the treatment's efficacy in a larger cohort of HER2-positive patients. Scientists are working on an official 'alien contact protocol' for when ET phones Earth | Live Science (19:01) For the first time in 35 years, a team of policy experts and scientists have united to establish a set of alien-contact protocols for the entire world to follow in the event of a sudden encounter with E.T. What better use of “policy experts” … unless they know something Currently, the only alien contact protocol that humans have was established by the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute (SETI) community in 1989. vague when it comes to the international response to extraterrestrial communication mainly focuses on the importance of sharing discoveries with the public and broader scientific community. The new SETI Detection Hub will scan signals for potential messages sent from alien lifeforms and will develop a framework for attaching meaning to those signals. End it with John Elliot, a computer scientist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and coordinator of the SETI Detection Hub, talking on the preparedness effort: “Will we ever get a message from E.T.? We don't know. We also don't know when this is going to happen … But we do know that we cannot afford to be ill-prepared — scientifically, socially, and politically rudderless — for an event that could turn into reality as early as tomorrow." Open-source fish robot starts collecting microplastics from UK lakes | The Next Web (24:20) Microplastics in the water is a problem: A new study from Stanford University found that blue whales, the biggest creatures on Earth, ingest about 10 million pieces of microplastics per day. What could be the solution? Maybe a plastic eating robot fish? A robot fish that collects microplastics from waterways has been turned from an idea into a working prototype. The design was brought to life after it won the University of Surrey's public competition, the Natural Robotics Contest. Competition was to submit an idea for a bio-inspired robot that could help the world. The robotics panelists and researchers, led by Dr. Robert Siddall, turned the design into a 3D-printed prototype about the size of a salmon. consists of a flooded head unit and a watertight tail unit. Set of gills on its sides and a fine mesh in between them that can sieve about two-millimeter particles Filters the water and keeps the microplastics inside its container as it swims. The robot fist has already been tested in the lab and local lakes Going Forward, according to Siddall, the team is envisioning a range of improvements for the robot: Making It faster and smarter Operate autonomously, rather than being remote controlled.
